Ready...Set....Turn on MTV

Is everyone ready for the Sorority Life episode tonight?? Since it's started I've only managed to catch the reruns, so I'm feelin' pretty excited that I can watch it tonight (woohoo, yeah shows how much of a life i have tonight!)

So I'm taking a survey...if you scraped all the makeup off Jordan and Amanda...how many pounds would it equivalate?

*slaps hand* Bad Rebecca!;)

"It's a PHI SIG thing"

"I'd rather laugh with the sinners then cry with the saints...the sinners have much more fun"

Kamikazee 07-15-2002 08:26 PM

It's interesting enough...
Although I doubt I would watch it if I wasn't greek....
I hate the way the other pledges are ganging up against Jessica. Just because she arrived a week later doesn't mean shes a spy.. can we say parnoid

ThielGirlie 07-15-2002 08:58 PM

... the aproximate weight of 3 average housecats.

Oh wait, that'd be their hair and HAIRSPRAY! :p

Speaking of makeup, did you see the 2nd episode when Candace was going to bed and didn't have any makeup on? Her face was ALL broken out. Hey, I know, it happens to us all... but now we know why all the makeup!

Yea, I'm pretty excited tonight just because I hope Candace and Jordan get busted! The drama between the pledges and actives is getting pretty heated... the actives have got to start whooping those girls into shape, or ship them out!

At least the actives and Jessica are giving a positive view of Greek life.

(Boy, I sound so shallow in this post! I guess the show does that to me... :( )

I do my hair like Jordan does, which I have been doing for years. I too go through a can of hairspray in a week. There is no other way to do our type of hair without it being all nap-di-fied by noon! :p

ThielGirlie 07-15-2002 10:21 PM

Yea, I can't say much, cause so did I! :p Not to mention my hair is so incredibly thick, and I had a perm on top of it... I went through a bottle of frizz ease and hairspray a week! When i had it all cut off my friend thought the pile of hair was the size of two house cats... lol. I guess I made that comment cause I know what it's like. :)

Anyways, 9 min to go, gotta turn on the show!

OXAT1281 07-15-2002 10:26 PM

interesting rumor i saw on www.collegehumor.com anyone else hear about this:

"COLLEGEHUMOR NEWS FLASH! BIG SORORITY LIFE THINGS A'BREWIN!

Friends. I don't know about you guys, but MTV's Sorority Life show keeps getting better and better. Whoever says American Idol is the runaway hit of the summer either works for FOX or is retarded or both. As a very interesting side note, CollegeHumor has heard a very interesting rumor concerning the Sorority Life show. This rumor, which we believe to be pretty accurate, is that one of the pledges slept with the executive producer of the show. We won't say exactly which pledge it was, but if you're really interested, maybe you could ask the greatest basketball player to ever live if he knows (hint hint). Once again, let's be clear that this is a rumor, but we've got some pretty damn good sources. Developing..."

Kamikazee 07-15-2002 10:58 PM

Hey I have a question...
How many GLOs have pledges living in their house or in a pledge house?

ThielGirlie 07-15-2002 11:02 PM

My Sorority Life rant of the week

Ok, Jordan said the "girls don't want to get to know her, so why should she be a part of the organization?" Well, maybe if she and the pledge house girls would spend some time with the sisters instead of going out and getting drunk maybe they would respect her a little more!

Ok, I'm done for the evening...

LeslieAGD 07-15-2002 11:03 PM

At least in this episode they addressed issues with the girls, but they're still skirting around the problems. And that scene with the girls in the hot tub was pointless...woo hoo, girls in bikinis.

MUPhiMuKHap 07-15-2002 11:09 PM

Ok, I am sorry, but this show gets worse every episode. Could MTV find ANYTHING to focus on besides the drinking? I know they do it excessively, but come on.....I'm sure the entire country now thinks ALL sorority girls get so piss drunk that they walk into sliding glass doors or fall in to the side of the house. I thought the stupid producer of this show was greek and wanted to show us in a "positive" light. HAHAHAHAHA, ok sorry.....I don't know how much more of this show I can take, it really sucks.... And just to add that I think Jordan is the fakest (that's not a word, is it?) person ever. She just needs to shut up and go wash off her nasty makeup....uggh, who ever told her that red eyeshadow looked good? Ok, I'm done venting for now, sorry! :p ;) :D :D

Kamikazee 07-15-2002 11:12 PM

I am looking at the show and its like... my pledge was nothing like that and it was pretty cool. I haven't seen the pledges do a single non-alcholic thing since the series begun... and the to pledges stubbling in drunk.. priceless...

I feel the same way!

Blaire 07-15-2002 11:22 PM

To be honest, I kinda feel sorry for some of them. I mean, I feel like we're only getting to know the "party side" of some. And, I have to wonder, was that party scene with Mara getting sick REALLY during the Parent's BBQ? Or is it another "MTV" ploy? However, I TOTALLY agree about the whole hot tub thing...pluleasse!

Blaire

So proud to be a DELTA ZEE!

No matter the letter, greeks do it better!

Hootie 07-15-2002 11:25 PM

So tonight was the first time I got to watch this "Sorority Life" show. I laughed my ass off...especially when Jordon goes slamming into the glass door and then all you see is a huge wet imprint. Priceless.
I dunno, this show does make sense from what I saw tonight...there's always an issue with the pledge class and wether or not a few will make it based on grades or behavior. I was never on executive board, but my closest friends were and I heard all about their problems and conflicts and the stress the pledge master goes through...etc.
Now I've gathered that all they show is the girl's getting drunk...common it's MTv...it's bound to happen. But from what I saw tonight it was pretty interesting...from an active (now alumn) point of view.

Hootie

ChiOJenn78 07-15-2002 11:25 PM

Ok, this show stopped being about sorority life about 2 episodes ago. Now it's just a train wreck.

What is up with Jordan whining that no one likes her/wants to know her/are so mean to her-shut up!! It's not about you, stupid girl-it's about representing your organization in a positive way-not in a "back that ass up" sort of way. No one seems to get that concept. She and Candace need to move along-and get the hell off camera.

By the way-I have walked into glass doors twice-sober both times-it really hurts!! :D

mmcat 07-15-2002 11:40 PM

one can hope ...

that the sisters get a bit more serious on these pledge house girls...
jessica and deedee (who i think still lives there) seem fine, but the others need a reality check if this is indeed what they want to do. they scanned briefly to the point board. it sounds like an intervention is in order. please, some new drama. that has some reality.
:D

EagleChick19 07-15-2002 11:43 PM

I wondered when the sisters were going to crack down on the pledges. Their pledging has been a cake walk, compared to GCers. Jordan and Candace had to tone down the stuff they're doing....

I too have walked into a glass window..It was dark and the window was a full glass one so I thought it was a doorway..I was walking pretty fast towards it and SLAM!! <---I looked just like that....Right in the face.Try lookin good after that in front of your sisters and fraternity boys.I played it off pretty well though, lol.Even though my sisters were dying on the floor laughing. Just one of those moments going into the Chi Omega Journal.

Anyway, I agree that Jordan is putting no effort into getting to know the sisters and the rest of her pledges sisters and HUH..Was I the only who noticed that Candace wasn't even 21 YET...I thought Jessica was the only one under the age..Ohh that looks good.

stargirl725 07-15-2002 11:53 PM

Does anyone else think that the sisters handled the meeting really poorly? IMO, to go right out and tell Jessica that they're calling because her five housemates are in big trouble was not classy at all. They could have used more discretion. They could have just as easily disciplined them all without advertising it to the world. And that board thing -- what in the world? If I DID get in trouble, I'd hate to have it posted up for the world to see. I mean, doing that is just going to alienate these girls even more than they already are. I am glad to see that the whole pledge class is doing something together next week, but it still creeps me out that the new girls are never at the main house, and whenever we see the sisters and new girls together, it usually involves the older girls pointing and whispering. Is that really the full extent of their interaction?

PS: Becca needs to change her shirt. She's worn that red and grey thing every episode :)

EagleChick19 07-15-2002 11:53 PM

I think that Dede (the blonde one) is also underage!

PSUSigKap 07-16-2002 12:01 AM

alright so this is what the fourth episode? and oh wait has anything that depicts real sorority life happened? no. . .yes we drink, but that's all they've been showing. yes they've been showing the pledge (ahem new member meetings) meetings, but they have no substance? what about why the sorority was founded? what about their ideals? why don't we get to find out about other sisters and new members? yes they follow around the same people because it's easy, but can't they show someone else occasionally? these people don't talk to anyone else? plus, nothing really happens in each episode. i keep watching in the hopes something will happen. mtv has like 15 mins of commercials and 10 mins of show. there can't be any kind of developments in 10 mins. i'm glad that they talked to the girls about their actions, but they shouldn't have told jessica it was for the other five, and jessica shouldn't have been snickering when she told the others that they had a meeting. last episode i felt sorry for her, but this episode i think she deserves some of what the others dish out. based on what the brilliant editors (yeah right) at mtv have chosen to show us, it seems she really hasn't made an effort to get to know the house girls. ok that's enough ranting for now. yes i will continue to watch it, and unfortunately i'm kinda addicted  we'll see what next week brings. . .

SATX*APhi 07-16-2002 12:32 AM

Okay, yes Jordan does things that aren't very "Sigma like" as they put it, but at least she is a genuine individual. Yes, she says, "If they don't want to get to know me, I don't want to get to know them," but at least you can tell that if they weren't being snobbish with her, she would be that way in return. She cares, she just doesn't want to admit it. Yes, she could be a bigger person and try and get to know all of the girls and open up to them, but at least she isn't bashing all of the actives in the freakin confessional like Candace!! Candace has this awful "I do'nt give a f*ck" attitude. When I saw her with her parents and saw that they went to the club with her and the girls to celebrate her 21st, I knew there was no way she would tone down her behavior. Did your parents go and party like a rock star with you the evening of your 21st??? Didn't think so.

As for the other girls, Mara is really sweet and I haven't seen anything to warrant her not being initiated. Jessica is a little feisty, actually really feisty. She just rarely appears to be that way because she is the one we need to feel sorry for, remember? And DeeDee, where the hell is she?!?!?! She is totally MIA. Amanda is coming across as having the "I don't want to get to know the girls" attitude just because Candace and Jordan feel that way. I could be wrong, but that's what I gather.

Until next week....

33girl 07-16-2002 12:46 AM

This show has zero to do with sorority life. MTV thought that would be a good buzzphrase to generate interest. It's the Candace and Jordan show. And it's quite obvious that neither of them give a crap about Sigma or have a clue what sorority life means.

And may I just say...no matter how cool they are....taking your parents along on your 21st...yuck.

PM_Mama00 07-16-2002 12:54 AM

I was thinking exactly that about Amanda. She's a total follower, and her lips bother me. I think Jordan has real potential. She's being herself. Candace on the other hand is just a straight up bia bia. I wish I could be a fly on the wall to see the actives faces right now with them hearing everything she says. I hope to god that our Phis weren't like that last fall when we had the same problems with them. The actives need to discipline these girls a lil more. And where are the other pledges? I'm so glad that the actives decided that all the pledges need to have sleepovers every week. The house was totally separating this pledge class, and we all know that pledge classes are supposed to be tight.

josh8o 07-16-2002 03:15 AM

i have to admit that i'm a guy who watches the show....
anyway, it was so funny when jordan ran into the window...i laughed so hard.
i have done it too...one time at a party at sae i wanted to go outside and i walked into a huge window that is floor to ceiling. so many people saw. good thing i was drunk.

Zuma 07-16-2002 03:19 AM

Silent, but not gone yet

So I'm sick of not commenting, so heres a couple things I noticed from the show:

If you didnt believe that MTV slices and cuts footage into some sort of collage, you can believe it now. The scene in the "bar" where the "sisters" were supposedly looking at Candace and Jordan freaking each other didnt happen like that.THEY WERE IN FACT TWO DIFFERENT BARS. The sisters (Leslie, Leah, Rachel) all appear to be at the Grad which you can tell by the diference in the wood panneling, while Jordan and Candace are at the Cantina, which doesnt have wood paneling, just wooden tables and brightly colored chairs. So we really have no idea what they were looking at, and the cut and paste is to create tension, which we all pretty much know. (I dont mean to toot my own horn, but I have a knack for identifying background in split-second shots. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, so tons of places I've been end up as the back drop for scenes in various things, so its something I've gotten really good at, in case you are wondering. Oh, and I annoy my friends CONSTANTLY with it! ha ha)

Oh, and when the girls are talking about Mitzvah Day in the hot tub, that was an ample opportunity to show the community service we do, since doing a mitzvah means doing a good deed, and that's what they do on those day. You can see pictures from it on the sigma website. Obviously MTV is not intrested in showing what the sorority actually does, but like I said, we knew that already!

As far as Mara getting sick during the parents BBQ, from what I could tell, it looked like she got sick in her own apt. I know for sure she wasnt at the BBQ. But I also know that for Picnic Day, where some people start drinking at 10am (I dont know who can stomach beer that early in the morning!), its not that unusual to be passed out by 7-8, though it definitly does suck. Picnic Day is/was awesome, and I had a great time this year!

Anyone got any questions, or things they are wondering about?

In one word, yes. I know this is a young sorority (only four years, right?) and they probably don't deal with these kind of behavioral problems every quarter, but come on! Get a backbone and tell them exactly what is up. For example: "Our concerns are that the drinking has been in excess, people don't feel you're making the effort to get to know others outside the pledge house, you're breaking house rules, you're talking bad about the chapter to other people, etc." Not: "Well, there are some concerns about your motives."

And yes, it does worry me that we don't see scenes of the pledges and sisters together, except for new member meetings and bar splices. I know that just because we don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen but, similar to what ChiOJenn78 said, this show stopped being about the sorority as soon as those girls moved into the pledge house. MTV could show a little sisterhood and community service/philanthropy without loosing it's drama...trust me, we're getting a double helping of that crap as it is.

I'm officially labeling this show as the train wreck that it is!

Finally, someone labeled this entire show for what it is!!!! The pledges don't get along with each other. From the previews for next week, the actives and pledges will have to spend 3 nights in the pledge houses w/the 6 that already live there! What do you think of that?!?!

now returning to the candace and jordan show.....

i am honestly so sick of candace. i really don't think she gets what being in a sorority means. And i don't think that's the actives fault. i mean, her whole whiney speech about "this is just so hard...school, pledging, living here, getting to know actives, getting to know pledge sisters, it's all really hard..." well, maybe it wouldn't be easier if you didn't drink quite as much!

part of me feels sorry for jordan, however, her behavior does suck. And honestly, if this were happening in my organization both of them would have been asked to turn in their new member pins.

maggieaxid 07-16-2002 09:12 AM

JUST A RUMOR!!!!!!

i could be totally wrong, but i heard a rumor that "sigma" was being sued by a NPC sorority. Details anyone?

I think that in most organizations, with the crap that Jordan and Candace have been pulling, would have been shown the door. I'm trying to like Jordan, since she's a poli sci major, like myself. But, with all the drinking, they are making all sorority sisters look like a bunch of alcoholics! That's not an image that I want for PNMs to look at.

That is my .02

I haven't heard that rumor but it could possibly be true. Someone on another sorority life thread had mentioned that she thought she saw her letters in the opening credits. since I had to tape the show last night, when I watched it I ran the credits slowly. Sure enough, at the last opening credits the letters for Delta Gamma, Tri-Delts, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Phi are shown on screen. I would think that the NPCs would be suing since all were so against any member participating in this. From what i understand at UC Davis, the NPC groups were told by their HQ that they shouldn't even have letters on if filming was occuring any where near them.

EagleChick19 07-16-2002 10:49 AM

There would be a great reason to sue MTV/the producers of the show. Because I'm sure that that those organizations didn't give them permission to use their letters in the opening of the show. I would like to see what happens with this!

Dove Gal 07-16-2002 11:04 AM

Has anyone beeen to SAEPi's website? It has on the website that they are associate members of NPC there at UC Davis. I was just curious what is associate memeber?

Associate members of the UC Davis Panhellenic Association but not of the National Panhellenic Conference, since they are considered only a local and not a national sorority. Generally, new fraternities and sororities are accepted in the local Greek council first as associate members and later as full members.

Why would Sigma get sued...wouldn't it be MTV?

Anyway...

I would first of all like to say that I have been a victim to a screen door when I was SOBER so I can totally see how that happened...yes, it was funny but damn that had to hurt :D

Mara got sick at her OWN apartment with her friends outside the sorority. She did not get sick at the BBQ.

I don't really care how Candace and Jordan acted when they went to the bar because a lot of my friends act like that and we know that they are just joking around...and so does everyone else. Plus, didn't it show Candace walking into the bar with her parents? (I know about creative editing, so maybe she went to a different bar afterwards) I think if her parents thought that she was doing something bad they would have said something to her.

The active sisters think that the pledges go out every night and get wasted. Of course MTV only shows us the party side but I say as long as you have your shit together and are getting everything done it is none of their business. My husband and I went to the bar for 84 nights in a row...so does that make me out of control? No, we went there had a drink, chit chatted, and then left. These girls could very well be doing the same thing.

Everyone has to remember that they only show bits and pieces of pledge meetings, house meetings, etc. so we really have no idea what entire meetings are like and what is discussed. You also have to keep in mind the creative editing of MTV. Not all scenes fit together and if you watch closely you will see that very easily.

I think the MTV pledge house is the worst thing that this sorority has ever had. Not only did it divide the sisters from the pledges but it also divided up the pledge class.

FuzzieAlum 07-16-2002 11:41 AM

I can't believe I'm actually about to defend some aspect of that show ... people might be getting sick of seeing the same few pledges and members over and over again, but that's because those girls who didn't want to participate didn't have to. That means you're not seeing those other girls because they didn't want to be shown on national TV - and you can bet they probably didn't join because of MTV! Be glad MTV is sticking to its promises in this case - you wouldn't want to be one of the girls who said "no" but then found your face all over MTV.

I too think the pledge house is a bad idea. It makes it easy for MTV to film, but it increases the unity of a small portion of the pledge class - at the expense of pledge class unity and chapter unity.

shadokat 07-16-2002 12:59 PM

OK, so easy on Jordan's hair. Mine is EXACTLY like that, and we naturally curly haired girls gotta stick together! When Jordan hit the door, I about peed my pants laughing! I've done stupid things when I was drunk, so I guess I could appreciate it. These ladies that are 21 can go out and drink as much as they want. If the actives don't put any rules in place during the pledge program to prohibit that, then why bitch when it happens? You had the option to try and control this! Sorry, but this sorority is and should be the laughing stock of Davis's campus!
