Communication Majors?

Any communications majors out there?

I'm Corporate Communication...

(edit: fixed that Communications thing, thanks for pointing it out)

Dionysus 07-15-2002 01:17 AM

Yup, I major in communications and minor in marketing. Hopefully that will get me a job in advertising.

What Up COMM Majors!!!

I'm a communication major at SDSU. I want to go into public relations. SDSU is a great school for communication...the only problem is that there are soooooooo many people trying to get into the program that it takes forever to get classes. I'm on the 5 year plan now, and if I don't get my classes like I should, then I will be on the 5+ year plan...lol.

I was a corporate/broadcast comm major in college, I now work for a magazine company in the production dept.

SilverTurtle 07-15-2002 09:47 AM

I was a speech & communicaton major (w/ a minor in music). I took a variety of courses (from theory to radio & tv production) 'cause I didn't know what I wanted to do. (Still don't, exactly!)

There are a lot of options w/ the major!!

kddani 07-15-2002 10:32 AM

Communications was one of my majors (other two were poli sci and history). I'm starting law school in the fall.
Communications has given me a good background in working with others and getting my messages across clearly. No matter what job field you enter, it can help you greatly.

Print journalism major (as well as a history major) - not quite sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but I've done a lot of newspaper writing in the past.

I'm a Communications Public Relations major. I want a job in advertising, but I'd have to minor in Marketing. And why, oh why, do you have to go up to calculus for marketing? I'm horrible at math and barely understand advanced algebra and geometry. Grrrrrrrr. It is because of math that I cannot do what I actually want to do.

Ha ha! We have so much in common. I'm in a very similar situation. Because, I can't even pass "math 101", I can't major in marketing. I have to minor in marketing instead, which requires less math. I'll settle for advertising.

I was a Radio and Television Production Major (BECA for all the SFSU Gators out there ;)). I *loved* my major! It gave me a completely different perspective on things when I went to law school, than the usual pre-law, poli-sci majors you see as a 1L.

Question

Are there any professional GLOs for comm majors?

SilverTurtle 07-15-2002 11:47 AM

Phi Beta is a professional GLO that incorporates all creative & performing arts, and comm is included in that! (Anything from the study of communicative disorders to film making). Our Alpha Epsilon chapter at the University of Houston is almost entirely comm majors! We were originally founded as a fraternity uniting music & speech.

I checked out the PFA website & found Pi Sigma Epsilon, which is a sales & marketing GLO. That was the closest thing I found aside from Phi Beta.

Just a pet peeve, being a comm major myself

confusedgrl83 07-15-2002 02:26 PM

I'm a public communication major (PR) with a minor in political science.. we actually have to have a minor for our PR program. Hopefully I'll be doing the 5 year BA/MA program in PR here as well.

AGD4me 07-15-2002 03:09 PM

I was a communication studies major in college, with a public relations emphasis. I now work as a corporate communications director and love it! My greek experiences definitely helped me get a few jobs because of the skills I learned, too! :)

I Wish I Had!

I really wish I had majored in Communication. I am going to take this in grad school and am willing to take any remedial classes necessary. I love every aspect of communication: interpersonal, brodcasting, etc. Anyone have any ideas as to what grad schools have the best Comm programs?

Star Turtle 07-15-2002 11:15 PM

I'm a speech communications major, with minors in history and education. I will graduate with my bachelors in may, and after that I planning on grad school. Right now my major choices are NYU, Miami of Ohio, and Florida State. UNC and Marshall are slim possiblities, but I'm still looking into them. I'll get a masters in Speech Comm. and eventually I'll work on my Doctorate degree.

On a side note, I have earned my "Ducktorate" degree from Disney University. ~~ I'm really proud of that one!

Dionysus 07-16-2002 12:03 AM

I'm very glad to hear about you all's successes w/ a communication major. Do you all have to put up w/ BONEHEADS who think comm majors are only for dumbasses and will not get you a good job?

Sup Comm Majors!

My major is Communications with concentration in Public Relations, and my minor is Broadcast Journalism. My dream job is working in pr for the corporate offices of Coca Cola (which is down the street from my university)
How many of you PR majors are members of P.R.S.S.A (Public Relations Student Society of America)?

bcdphie 07-19-2002 01:34 AM

I start my grad degree in marketing communication this september.

I'm the Senator to the Student Senate for the PRSSA Chapter at my school.

DRau 07-19-2002 03:16 PM

I got an BA in Comm. and now I am a graduate student persuing an MA in Higher Education/University Administration. My Greek affiliation led me to Student Affairs, and I also currently work a Coordinator for Greek Affairs on another University campus.

However, I still want to go to law school some day, probably with an emphasis in Educational Law.
