Greek Symbols in Entertainment?

I was just curious if any of your famous alumna/e in music/ film/ books/ etc. have put open symbols/ mottos of your fraternity or sorority into something that they have created...

For example (please correct me if I am wrong on these):

- a ZTA alumna was an illustrator for "The Little Mermaid" and put symbols of the sorority into the movie

- the Hallmark crown is a reference to ZTA because the CEO's wife in an alumna

- Walt Disney wrote the song "Let's go fly a kite" for his daughters who were Kappa Alpha Thetas

I AM NOT ASKING FOR WHAT THE SYMBOL MEANS!!! PLEASE DO NOT PUT WHAT THE SYMBOL MEANS!!!

I'm just interested so that when I see these things I can go, "Oh, that's a reference to XYZ!" :D

Actually, Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman wrote "Let's Go Fly a Kite" (as well as all of the other songs in "Mary Poppins"). Disney requested the song because of his daughter's Theta connections -- he first discovered P.L. Travers' Mary Poppins when she was reading it.

BTW, Theta connections are also why Marlo Thomas flew a kite in the opening of "That Girl."

the quatrafoil (phi mu symbol) is on all the tables at Chilli's restaurants. I think the owner's daughter is a phi mu.

I am a zeta and I heard those rumors too so they must be true! Definitely in the Little Mermaid deal!

It's kind of neat how people are touched by their greek experience and use it later in life.

There's a cross and crescent on the back of it. Sean Irvin is a lambda chi from Florida Tech.

Where is ZTA found in the Little Mermaid? I would love to know! Thanks! :)

You would only know if you were a Zeta!
There's a lot of stuff in there but I'll never tell.......................:D

Rumor has it from my Theta Chi friends that Steven Spielberg has a reference to the fraternity in every one of his movies. I only know of a few that were pointed out to me, such as the crossed swords on the wall in Gremlins and the badge being in the eye of the skull in Goonies, but it's fun to keep an eye out for them.

wvapogirl 07-12-2002 05:16 PM

thanks everyone

Thanks everyone, and please keep 'em coming!

ZTAMiami- Are there any open symbols (the crown, your crest, flower, etc.) that you can tell us about that we can keep a watch for when we watch the movie?

There are some. Arielle's hair is strawberry colored. Ursala has one torquoise eye and the other is gray.
Those are the only ones that I can tell you about. ;)

Colleenie 07-12-2002 06:05 PM

The movie "Mystic Pizza" with Julia Roberts has lots of Sigma Kappa symbols in it. One I can share: the wedding colors (at the end of the movie) are maroon and lavender.

allgreek2me 07-12-2002 06:12 PM

Liz Claiborne was an ADPi and that's why she has the lion as her symbol.

Speaking of Julia Roberts movies, apparently "Steel Magnolias" is about the life of a Phi Mu and in Shelby's room (Julia Roberts' character), there is Phi Mu stuff on the walls!

So if Liz Claiborne was an ADPi, why would she have the Delta shape on her labels? Coincidence?

maggieaxid 07-12-2002 07:15 PM

Jim Henson's wife is an AZD Alumna and "Fozzie Bear" was named for the AZD's (aka Fuzzies)

No, ladies, it's ANNE KLEIN who uses the lion for her symbol. Therefore, Anne Klein is likely the ADPi and Liz Claiborne, the Tri Delta.

But the real proof that the company intends to 'revive' the name and image of Anne Klein, is the resurrection of the lion's head- which had been the designer's trademark logo, and was in a '4 year hiatus'

Anne Klein designed her collections so you could keep buying from her year after year and your new stuff would go with your old stuff. She also chose the lion for her logo because she was a little bit of a spiritualist and Leo was her sun sign.

Does anyone know of any references to Phi Sigma Sigma? we don't really have famous alumna at least not like in movies and music, mostly doctors, artists, photographers, screen writers and play writers. If anyone knows though, I would love to know!

phimualumnc 07-12-2002 10:00 PM

Steel Magnolias was written by Robert Harling in honor of his sister Susan Harling who was a Phi Mu. They were originally from Natchitoches, LA. There was a composite shown briefly in her bedroom - pink was her signature color.

Alpha Xi Delta

The creater of Espirit clothing line created the signiture E in honor of the Xi in our letters. She is an alum of AXiD

queequek 07-13-2002 12:07 AM

I suppose Robert Frost wrote a poem about our beloved fraternity ... about the diversed road, etc. Let me check the title of the poem ... maybe SigmaChiCard can help?

ShaedyKD 07-13-2002 12:25 AM

Suzy Spofford, creator of Suzy's Zoo (art work, stationary, baby gifts, etc.) is a KD, and she has many teddy bear characters, which are our mascot, and are very cute. I know on some chapter's websites, there is a drawing of hers, with a little duck in a green and white dress and it says "KD Friendship Never Fades" or something like that. It's really cute, if I can figure out how, I will post it. I don't really know about any of our other famous alum...I know that when I watched Ali Landry on MTV's Cribs, I looked for KD stuff in her home, but didn't see any.

Cell phone add

Although I don't think they're "real" letters of any GLO, I noticed that in one of the cell phone commericals (I think its Alltel or Verizon) there are letters in the background. Its the commercial where the daughter and son call home. Anyway the part where the letters are in, is where the son calls from the so called "study group" when he's actually at a party. Look in the background.

Yes, I have way too much time on my hands when I find these details. hehe:D

TKEmz894 07-13-2002 02:35 AM

Not True

I used to live in Monroe Louisiana, The original home of Delta Airlines. It originally was a crop dusting company that took off literally into a major Airline. The people who founded it lived down the street from my fathers house and the Company was not named for Tri Dealt it was named for The Region.....Sorry to burst your bubble, but I could see why you micght think that it being named Delta and all...........Blaise

The movie IS based on a true life story. "Shelby" in the movie, was actually a Phi Mu.

Her color's in the wedding are "blush" and "bashful," and as Shelby says in the movie "You know, Pink is my FAVORITE color"

In the movie, when Shelby's mom is pinning her corsage on her pink suit, upstairs in Shelby's room, you can see her (REAL--as in Susan's REAL badge--from what I understand) beautiful badge on her suit (on her left side--closest to the camera) right before her mom pins the corsage over it.

In the same scene, you can see Shelby's (again, supposedly Susan's REAL) composite on the cork board behind them, along with all sorts of Phi Mu memorabilia.

Just to clarify (some of us Phi Mu's are REAL proud of it! hehe)

;)

Thanks CutiePie!

I could see the lion logo in my head and knew it was a designer. I should have known it was Anne Klein - maybe this is a sign I need to go shopping!?

AGDLynn 07-13-2002 09:17 AM

Well, I could say that Alpha Gam is in lots of movies...there are bunches of squirrely nuts! ;) :D

(I had hoped that Scrat (Squirrel Rat) in Ice Age had a bigger part, but it was effective, lol!)

Okay, I'm sure most of you out there has seen Legally Blonde? Well, in the movie Reese Witherspoon is a Delta Nu...their colors are pink and green. Well, at first I just thought it was cute that they had the same colors as us...then a Chapter Consultant visited us last semester and told me that the house in the movie that is the "Delta Nu" house is an old Delta Zeta house! In the beginning, when the girl on her bike arrives at the Delta Nu house, it shows her going up the stairs...the camera pans from the floor up and you can see DN...for a split second it looks like DZ...and if you'll notice, the Z in DZ looks like an N sideways! I watched the movie again and sure enough, you can see it briefly in the beginning!

Blaire

So proud to be a DELTA ZEE!

No matter the letter, greeks do it better!

I hate to burst your bubble, but according to the director's commentary on the DVD (yes, I love Legally Blonde so much that I sat through the commentary...really interesting, actually) the Delta Nu house was an old private girls' school in Pasadena, or thereabouts. :( Also, it was a Delta Gamma chapter that they based Delta Nu off of, not Delta Zeta. I do agree, however, that the similarities between DN and DZ are striking!

When I saw that movie, I was thinking Delta Zeta too!

In Van Wilder, there are a few Phi Mu things, but not sure if it is related. There is a lot of pink and white, and one of the guys falls out of a window into a fountain. The fountain is shaped in a quatrafoil!

Blaire 07-13-2002 01:14 PM

Well darn! I'm going to make sure that if I ever become famous, I'll incorporate DZ into something I do! Meanwhile, I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for DZ realted stuff elsewhere....;)

There is supposed to be Theta Chi stuff in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, like our badge in the tank scene but I can't find it. Maybe should watch it again and not at four in the morning and reading the newspaper.

Anyway, Indiana Jones is always with snakes, our symbol. It was our symbol first and then Sigma Nu stole it. j/k.

XO_Hooter 07-13-2002 02:01 PM

:) Julia Roberts was in a movie called "Something to Talk About" a few years ago. Her character in the movie was a Chi O.

Well, the colors of Delta Nu are the same as Delta Zeta's but if you look at the Delta Nu crest and compare it to the Delta Gamma crest, they are virtually identical.

Just change the rose at the top to a chihuahua head and you have the crest of Delta Nu!
http://www.uab.edu/deltagamma/symbols_files/crest3.gif

Apparently in the book "Legally Blonde" by Amanda Brown, (the movie was based on the book) Elle is a Delta Gamma and the girl who commits the crime (can't remember her name) is a Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Blaire 07-13-2002 09:03 PM

Wait...Legally Blonde is a BOOK!? Man, I am soooo out of the loop on this one! :D I feel so silly...oh well; maybe Florence Henderson will make a movie and cram it full of DZ references! :D

In the move Drumline - which if I can remeber correctly - comes out soon... there are many TBS and KKY references!!! There crests and letters from what the article in the Podium says...

And then...

In the new Road Rules - the mission where they step, the dot com team is in the band room, and they show a Kappa Kappa Psi crest and then if you look close theres a big wooden gold Sigma leaning up aganst the wall, probobly with a Tau and Beta beneith it!!! :):):)

famous stuff

TKE was in Playboys SEC issue, it is the TKE house at University of Georgia. Also the guy who plays the Gay guy in "As good as it gets" is supposed to be a TKE...I think his name is Greg Kaneer or something, and Ronald Reagan was a TKE, I wonder if he put any TKE things in his movies?
