Phi Sig's Steppin
Alrighty, I had asked this question in the Songs/Chants thread, but I decided it should have it's own personal thread.
Here's what I posted earlier: Ok, here's a question... Is it wrong for a Phi Sig Chapter to "step"? I've heard from my chapter sisters both answers, yes and no. So I wanted to see what everyone else thought. (oh, the reason why I'm asking is because I really wanna step! It's so fun!!!) So.... Here's another question... If another chapter decided to step, would you feel offended? Lemme know what you think! Thanks! LITP~Beth |
Do you mean step as in the rhythmic dance thing that mostly africian american sorors and frats do ???
|
I don't see a problem with it unless other sororities on your campus find it invades their territory too much(ie traditionally Afican American).
I know one phi sig song we learned from the Delta Theta chapter was like a very short, amateurish step routine, so if we've done it already why not? Besides, There may be many girls who join Phi Sig that used to step in HS, why should they have to give it up? |
I know on our campus one of the ethnic based sororities di a step routine at the Greek Week Talent Show. If we were to do it, it would kinda be inapprpriate I think. But I guess it just depends on your school.

I talked with our Song chair, who just so happens to be my "lil"... and we were discussing the whole issue of stepping. The pros and cons.
I think the major con right now would be that not all the sisters would wanna do it. Of course we wouldn't force any of them into it, but we also don't wanna leave anyone out. If you have any suggestions on what we should do, lemme know! I'm always down for some input! MUCH LITP~Beth |
I had already seen the other post pertainin to this question so here's what I had to say...

I SAY STEP!!!!
I am terrible, but I LOVE it! Tau Beta Sigma chapters step, since we are INCREDIBLY diverse, having chapters at hbcu's and schools like mine, single sex and co ed.... and we have stepshows and such... I LOVE it! So I say DO IT! If you need help with stepping, talk to some of the hbglo's on your campus, they should be happy to help you! PS- if you saw the Road Rules stepping episode, when the dot coms were in the band room- there was our brother org- Kappa Kappa Psi's crest and some TBS letters! Yea! |
I think steppin looks like a lot of fun but we could never do it. Over at Rutgers where our chapter is located there are many traditionally african american and latino fraternities and sororities that have step shows throughout the year. Its like their thing. I know if we did it, I would expect a lot of backlash. Being latina though, I personally would have no problem with Phi Sigs or anyone else stepping even if I wasn't a sister. Still, when tradition runs so deep, especially at our school, its going to be hard to get other people to think like that as well.

Well after talking with some chapter sisters, it looks like we might actually be able to go through with it!!! A lot of us wanna do it. I'm so excited! Do you all have any suggestions about what kinda show we can put on? Oh, but I'm sooooo excited!!! I'll keep you posted on what's going on with our "step team"...

Ok, so I thought I should tell ya'll what we're doing with this...
Well, today was the Yard Show, for Welcome Week... So last night at 10:30pm, the MRC-Sulma, Vice Archon-Yesenia and myself made up a routine. (yeah, a lil late notice... but hey...) We mixed the Clapping Song with P-H-I-S-G-M-A... And of course we had some other stuff in there. Like we yelled out PHIIIII SIIIIIG! and then ONE, NINE, ONE, THA-REEE! Plus more... It was too cute. Anyways, to get to my point... Yesenia and I got up there, in front of the other greeks, and did the routine!!! It was soooo fun!!! Yeah, so I just had to tell ya'll. FUN FUN FUN... LITP~Beth |

I was just reading this thread about Phi Sig's steppin'. I'm Cynthia from Iota Gamma and I'm the new person in charge of the step team.
We have already started and I must say we are pretty good at it. We showed out chapter what we had and they liked it. It's not done but I think it's comming along great. We do a chant and the one, nine, one, tha-reee! thing. We also add a chant that goes, Whats our name, Phi Sig...What are we gonna do, Dominate...etc. We also decided to put dance and music to it. We want to have a mixed take with hip pop, pop music, and belly dancing. Different types of music which shows that Phi Sigma Sigma is a diverse sorority. I'm so excited about out step show I just had to respond to this thread. LLCF, Cynthia |
In my opinion. . .
Well, since I'm black and grew up with stepping since high school. . .I don't see anything wrong with it.
HOWEVER, you'd better be able to hold your own against the BGLOs. It's different if you work your butt off to make it different and new but don't go out there half-hearted with it. That's where a lot of other non black GLOs mess up. If you're going to step, step. Another way to make the transition eaiser. . .ask one of the girls or boys from the black GLOs to come and teach you a step or two. It doesn't matter if you've been stepping for years. . .it makes it easier for them to accept that you're going to step. At Valdosta State, the NPC sororities had a step show during Greek Week. . .and they had the panel of black GLOs judge it. It gave the whites(all of the NPC sororities there were all white) a chance to interact with blacks on their level. They had black fraternity members teaching them steps. This is just my opinion because it can start some mess. . .and ALL GREEKS should strive for harmony. Plus, it would be a big favor for the prospective black girls who aren't sure if all NPC sororities will accept them. |
