Need Publicity Ideas

Greek Life at our school has always been rather small. Rush/recruitment tables do not work, tables at orientation and the student organization fair do not work, and banners and flyers do not work. Nobody reads the school newspaper so that would be a waste of time. Last semester we did freshmen mailings and it seems like they did not work either!!

I'm trying to think of some new ideas so Greek Life can be more visual...any suggestions?

I thought it would be kind of neat if we held a sisterhood event before rush started and everyone decorated the back windows of their cars with GO GREEK...or something along that line.

I know sidewalk chalk has been used in the past but I don't know if it was useful or not.

HELP!

The best idea for publicity that I have ever seen is passing out candies (like lolie pops or hard candy) with little tags on them with the organization's name (or in this case, Go Greek or something), info, etc. This is relatively inexpensive, especially if you make the tags yourselves, and students are always looking for something free to eat!!!!

Maybe hanging banners along the student center, or a popular entrance to the school, if you were allowed?

And perhaps this is the old lady in me talking but I HATE SIDEWALK CHALK. To me it's just grafitti - and it only looks bright for a short time - not to mention the thought of people walking all over your letters.

Sorry I forgot to add banners to my list. At the beginning of the year we do a "welcome back" banner and then right before rush starts we put up three Rush banners.

Can I pull my hair out now?

Encourage all Greeks to wear letters as much as possible (at appropriate times and places, of course). Maybe designate one day of the week as Greek day. Whenever you walk around campus it seems like EVERYONE is Greek (and we know it's only a small percentage of the student body) just because you notice all these people with letters on.

Hey....we do that too...every wednesday is greek letter day and all greeks wear letters. Even though only 10 percent of students are greek....it looks like everyone is. Also, banners are good and bar nights! Everyone will come and you can put flyers under doors...and you make money off of them!:)

We have tried Greek Letter days but it just doesn't work at our campus. Hell, I can't even get my own girls to wear letters on the same day.

We use to sponsor bar nights but it got so big that they decided they were going to keep all the money for themselves.

We're a commuter campus, no dorms, so we don't have any doors to put flyers under :(

Duh, I can't believe I forgot this. Adopt a Highway.

We already do that :)

AOX81, you're killing us! ;)

How about investigating a high profile philanthropy like Dance Marathon? If it's too big an endeavor for your school maybe you could team up with another school, too.

Raises oodles of money for sick children and spurs healthy competition and house pride. It's such a good cause and an adventure and usually is a heavily Greek event.

We are handing out ice cream in the Quad with the other GLO's.

Sorry :( What can I say, my school sucks!

Getting people to do stuff is like trying to pull teeth. I am in no way trying to slam nationals but the two nationals at my school sit around with their thumbs up their ass. My local sorority pretty much does everything for Rush. We are almost to the point where we are going to drop out of Formal Recruitment all together. Why should we do ALL of the work? And I'm seriously not exaggerating when I say ALL.

We do our big Philanthropy event for the Leukemia Foundation in February. We usually raise a ton of money. That is about the only time of year that we can get people motivated to pull off an event that big.

Just shoot me now!

So what did you guys think about the car decorating idea? It's a commuter campus so everyone HAS to drive to school. I figure we could use white shoe polish or window paint and decorate everyones back window. Does this sound like a good idea?

TrojanGirl 07-11-2002 02:45 PM

Use Glass Chalk... more colorful and less damage!

It sounds like a cool idea. I say go for it!

We shoe-polished our cars every year from the start of school until rush which was like the 3rd week of school.

Also, we painted our dorm room windows...at my school sororities didn't have houses, but had a whole floor in the dorms. My chapter started it my junior year and we painted the windows labor day weekend after everyone was gone and they came back and there were purple sigmas everywhere! Now, every chapter on campus does it!

I understand that being at a commuter school with little greek participation is difficult, but to sit and say the nationals at your school don't do anything isn't very nice, especially when they are organizations in which some of us belong (D Phi E and Phi Sig).

From the sounds of it, Greek Unity isn't very prevalent, and the Greek Community isn't offering students what they are looking for in terms of sorority life. My suggestion is re-evaluate what you're doing as a sisterhood. Instead of working against each other, talk to members of the other sororities on campus and work on a real Go Greek plan instead of a go D Phi E or AOX.

I know at my school, there was an interest group of 30 women who wanted to start their own sorority b/c what the others had to offer wasn't what they were looking for. Fortunately, Panhel and campus said no, and these girls found out that what they were looking for was out there in D Phi E.

Sorry if I sounded bitchy in paragraph #1, but I never appreciate one of my chapters being put down.

How long does the shoe polish last? Does it come off in the rain?

Thanks!

shadokat: you have every right to bitch :) I'm sorry if I offended you in any way.

I really wasn't trying to put anyone down. Delta Phi Epsilon and Phi Sigma Sigma have wonderful members and are both wonderful organizations. I am very good friends with members from both organizations. We have tried several times to promote the Greek system as a whole but everytime it has fallen through because someone wasn't responsible. My sorority works our butts off promoting the Greek system. We just want people to come to rush events, yeah we'd love for a lot of the girls to join our sorority, but if they fit better with somebody else that's fine. We are just tired of everyone bitching about numbers :(

Our entire Greek population is probably less than 100 students! This is why I'm looking for better ways to publicize rush and Greek Life in general.
