A good song done bad...
Has anyone else heard the Dolly Parton version of "Stairway to Heaven"? Can someone please explain how this happened? I almost drove into the back of a Smart bus to make the pain go away. IT's HORRID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
I haven't heard it yet but I'm sure it will definitely suck. I am not a big Dolly Parton fan...
|
that could be as bad as American Pie done by Madonna......love the girl, but you don't try and do American Pie, seriously.

I haven't heard Stairway, though I have heard Shine. Scary on principle!!! The worst was Sheryl Crowe's Sweet Child O Mine. Though SigmaChiCard has a point with the Madonna mishap.

Unless they are old standards, remakes in general usually suck.
Beatles remakes are particularly heinous, although I did like Earth Wind & Fire's version of "Got To Get You Into My Life." |

Hey! I liked Sheryl's cover of Sweet Child of Mine. It's a pretty song and I'll take her voice over Axl Rose's any day.
The cover I'm hating right now is the new "But you Say I'm Just a Friend" or something like that. I guess Biz Markie actually participated in this new version too! In my opinion they took all the goofiness and fun out of the original with this new version. While we're on the subject of cover's sometimes they're good when they manage to completely re-invent the song. Annie Lennox did a cover of Bob Marley's "Wait in Vain" for the Serendipity soundtrack. They end up being COMPLETELY different songs but I love both of them. Anyway, Karen.. That Dolly cover just sounds frightening. I hope I never have to hear it. |
ACK! Save me! I hope I never hear it...her voice grates.
On the other hand--what is the best cover ever? I will have to say The Gourds remake of "Gin & Juice." Funny as hell to hear that song done Bluegrass. Of course, I guess only the Texans will know what the heck I'm talking about. ...with my mind on my money & my money on my mind...:D |

Only Texans???
It's by the Gourds, but you'll find it falsely listed under virtually every band from Phish to Leftover Salmon. You can't go to many non-rap-playing parties and not hear it.... |
Okay on that note... Has anyone ever heard of Hayseed Dixie. They do twangy country covers of AC/DC songs. It's too funny!

My younger brother who is more "up" on the music scene than I am introduced me to this group (he went to UT & everyone in Austin thinks they know more about the music scene than anyone else in the world!). I'm just glad to have some other folks to laugh about it with...wonder what Snoop Dogg thinks about it. I will have to look for the Hayseed Dixie stuff... |
I heard Dolly's version of Stairway to Heaven a couple of weeks ago. The morning crew on the local rock radio station was playing it --- I thought it was a joke they had concocted until I heard that she was promoting it on The View. I love Dolly, but she should have just said no to that one! :D

No way could I agree w you Cory! lol Being in Vegas in 01 with the wind HOWLING thru the stadium the way it only does in the desert and Dave screaming "And the wind began to HOWWWWWWL" Being in my car after 9-11 w Listener Supported in my CD player and Watchtower coming on--- the louder I played it, the better I felt--was the first time since 9-11 I felt any sort of relief and release. Being in Irvine in 02 w Warren Haynes guesting on Watchtower on Boyd's birthday... wow. Three UNFORGETTABLE Watchtower moments. So no, despite my Davehead status--I could NEVER agree DMBs version was the worst one. :D Amy |

True....it's wonderful....but it doesn't come close to stacking up to the original by Bob, nor does it come close to Jimi.....It just may beat the Grateful Dead doing it cause they didn't as frequently do it......
|
my vote for worst cover EVER would definately have to go to..
the brady bunch's version of american pie yes kids, thats right..tv's favorite television children released several albums and did a cover of this song..apparently some things just aren't sacred..its the most wretched thing i've ever heard..don't get me wrong, i love the brady bunch..i even enjoy a lot of their songs like 'keep on' and 'sunshine day' but again..nevershould have tried to be down w/the times and whatnot |
A Good or Mediocre song done better
Anything by ME First & the Gimmie Gimmies!!!!!!
|
as a davehead, i'm with amycat.
hayseed dixie is the bomb, band. they came through bowling green, about a month and a half ago. the gourds...are...fingerpickin' good. shine was good...i don't wanna hear stairway, though. a really good cover is bob dylan's "make you feel my love" done by Garth Brooks. |
