Dress Checks This Weekend!!

Hey guys,

I know that I hardly ever post, and that this probably belongs in that other thread about how much people are excited about recruitment, but I just couldn't help myself......we have dress checks this weekend! This is the first time we'll all be together since school let out in the spring. I'm so excited because I miss everyone so much. I was talking to my friend who is a DG here and she was so jealous that we all were going to get together before work week (we call it spirit week) in August. Woohoo.....recruitment is almost here!!!! I just bought a new dress for prefs, and it is just gorgeous! I love it!

Anyone else having dress checks before work week?
Do you have all your clothes?

Alright......thats it for now.....UF recruitment 2002!!!:D

ROWDYsister 07-09-2002 08:14 PM

Wow, I can't believe you guys get to meet up before Spirit Week. Are you all meeting back at school? Lucky you! I have to wait til August 10th to move in and start Spirit Week...

But I've had my clothes ready since like May. I was a woman on a mission when it came to finding the perfect outfits. And I love my prefs gown, too!

Are you getting your hair and nails done, too? I've heard all the salons in town are totally booked every year for recruitment week.

Anyway, cool to see another sister from UF is as excited as I am!

Panhellenically,
Dyan

UFgirl 07-09-2002 08:34 PM

Yeah, we're all spending the weekend (well, friday and saturday) at the house, and new house residents get to paint their rooms.

AngelPhiSig 07-09-2002 08:36 PM

Pardon me for being a northerner from a small school....

What are dress checks?

ROWDYsister 07-09-2002 08:42 PM

When Recruitment Chair and some other girls (I'm assuming Prez and others) evaluate each member's outfits for each round of Recruitment Week. It's done to make sure we all have different outfits (at UF you can get fined if the house looks too "uniform" b/c it looks cultish and scary...this means not everyone can wear black pants or pink dresses, for example...with exception of prefs gowns) and to make sure the members look good. Certain criteria.

ps: UFgirl, I'm officially envious! Have fun this weekend! :D

MoxieGrrl 07-09-2002 08:54 PM

I don't know if you tell this......

But what are you wearing??!!

I absolutely *love* hearing this stuff b/c recruitment is very different where I come from. We didn't have dress checks. :(

Oh, and I just like clothes :)

twigs344 07-10-2002 12:24 AM

This weekend, the DG's from UNF will be staying at the DG house at UF. We have an annual Recruitment Retreat every summer to learn songs, rehearse, etc. I'm our VP Membership this yr, so I have been in charge of planning it. We're really looking forward to it. Their house is so nice :)

AngelPhiSig 07-10-2002 12:39 AM

OMG, you all should get in touch with my Recruitment chair, we soooo need to do a workshop. The most we do is sit in the livingroom and she goes over the rules, and tells us themes... !

AOII*Azra-elle 07-10-2002 01:31 AM

We don't have dress checks at my campus. But, we have something similar during work week--which isn't until August 19 *booo* too far away!!

I can't wait for recruitment--it's my first. We are the newest on campus so we just got our house this last May and are still fixing it up. It's going to be a blast! :)

kddani 07-10-2002 09:10 AM

We started having dress checks in the past year just to make sure everyone was on target with the theme. There were several more "difficult" sisters who tried to rebel and would purposely not wear something within the theme that was designated. It's also good to make sure clothes fit correctly and are comfortable. Also, it's a showcase for things you may want to borrow from someone else :D
It's basically just a check to make sure everything's okay, and it's not a big event. Basicall done before or after another event, and its not parading in front of everyone, just mainly checking with the rush chair and her assistants.
It's worked well for us.

aephi alum 07-10-2002 09:21 AM

We always did our dress checks during work week. We didn't actually model the clothes - we just brought them and showed each item to the rush chair. It wasn't ideal, though, since if you were missing a clothing item or something was unsuitable, you had to run to the mall pretty much immediately to buy it. (I am convinced that some of my sisters deliberately forgot their Keds or brought torn jeans, just so they could go to the mall and miss an hour or two of painting decorations ;) ) So, UFgirl, your chapter has the right idea. :)

ZTAngel 07-10-2002 10:15 AM

We have a recruitment workshop this weekend and we are going to be doing dress checks. It's a good idea because it gives all the sisters time before recruitment starts to buy any items that they are missing. Dress checks are to make sure that everyone is dressed appropriately and within the guidelines.

Not a dumb question at all. :) Work week (at least for us) was the week before rush starts. During that week, we made all our rush decorations, rehearsed skits and songs, practiced conversation skills, reviewed rush rules, did our dress checks, etc.

Glitter650 07-10-2002 01:07 PM

Interesting that you all can't' wear the same things as a house during the runds of rush... we dol... not exactly the same thing .. but same general outfit.. khakis and a same color top... or letters with black pants or whatever... and all the houses on my campus wear black dresses for pref. We have a retreat like 4 days before classes start, one overnight for just my chapter and one all day retreat for all panhelenic. Cant' wait... but it's pretty far away.. (not unitl august 22 ) then rush doesn't start until the second week of school.... hearing all this makes me jealous I SOO want to go to a school with a HUGE greek system. OH WELL, there are advantages to being smallish, the big thing is we all have a GREAT TIME

UF56 07-10-2002 02:08 PM

I wish I had someone in a sorority to critique my outfits for recruitment. :D I know I would feel a lot more confident about what I am planning on wearing. But I guess I will have to wait until I get in one to have that pleasure!! :D :D :D :D

Well here's an idea...if you have a scanner, take pics of the outfits and post them on here. There are lots of sorority women on here ;).

JMUduke 07-10-2002 03:02 PM

UF56 07-10-2002 03:32 PM

I personally think it is a great idea!!;)

It's interesting to see how rush is different at each school. At my school, all the girls in the houses must dress the same. We even have matching shoes. Some houses do it so they are all similar, but we buy exactly the same thing. An alumni who graduated last year works in the Nordstrom exec office (or something, she's not just a sales clerk though). Anyway, she picked most everything out with the help of our rush chair. She brought everything to our house and we tried everything on. She recorded our sizes and billed us. I like it this way because I don't trust some of the girls to pick out nice outfits. There's also less for us to worry about.

dzsaigirl 07-11-2002 06:17 PM

We always did dress checks in July so that people would have time to fix problems. Dress checks are helpful and keep people looking polished.

nauadpi 07-11-2002 06:25 PM

We do dress checks during spirit week (work week). Our outfits though are usually the same shirt, with the same type of bottom (be it all black skirts, black pants, etc.). Then we have the same type of shoes usually also. This is all except pref night where we all wear black dresses.

The big thing we do is during spring semester people do a fashion show of what we will be wearing, and show things we shouldnt do. Things like lengths of skirts and what not.

We dont meet during the summer, because we dont have a house. We are part of an all greek dorm, so during the summer we dont really have a place for everyone to meet.

This is pretty much how it works for us too...I can't imagine what we'd all look like if we picked out our own clothing...we'd probably have over 80 different outfits, eek!

RxyChrldr 07-11-2002 07:14 PM

Oh funny, Carrie..I didn't even realize that you go to UW also! Which GLO are you in? Go Dawgs! :)

SoExited@FSU 07-11-2002 08:37 PM

Florida State

Here at FSU, we have wardrobe committee that selects 3 outfit choices for each day of recruitment. Then each sister (seniority counts here) picks which of the 3 she'd like to wear, and the numbers just happen to come out pretty evenly. For Pref, the sorotiy distributes fabric and a pattern #, and we have our dresses made. This year, they're scarlet iradescent- 1 shoulder, tube, or spaggetti strapped.:p

SigKapSweetie 07-15-2002 03:13 PM

We had dress check right after finals (before you left, you got checked), and we have another check for girls who needed to go and buy different outfits the first day of work week. Basically, our exec told us what the guidelines for the week were and trusted us to be able to dress ourselves since we've done it every day since about the third grade.

ivysis 07-15-2002 03:37 PM

We had checks during polish week. This year they also did an early check before school got out. We were all told to wear the same thing (i.e. black capris, black flip flops) and they give us the tshirt we wear. We all look alike, but I know you can get an infraction (at least at CU when I was there) if you all had identical (as in same brand, etc) clothing. One house got fined my junior year for all having gap capris and the same brand white sneakers.

I MISS RECRUITMENT!
