*wants to start a chapter*

Okay, help me out here, will ya? :) At the University I'm attending the Greek Life is slowly dying, and the Greeks that are around aren't really that 'active'. I would REALLY love to help start a new sorority because well, we only have 4, and well, they are the kind of soro's that you never hear anything about. Sheesh, a few groups I never knew they had started rushing! I have talked to some girls who would like to start anew, but, we are all kinda are stuck in not knowing how to go about it. Well, hope you have some ideas for me!

TrojanGirl 07-09-2002 03:29 PM

Check out this threadRush at UCSC

It is how one girl started a sorority!

Is your chapter all local groups now? I just ask because otherwise they'd probably all have at least one rush at the same time, and it's hard to miss formal rush when it happens.

If it is all locals, it's pretty easy to start a chapter ... I bet you have to jump through fewer hoops.

I'm quite familiar with the university you're at because I'm up there quite often, but I don't know too much about the Greek life there as I've only been to a couple of parties. However, I think y'all need a national sorority--you've got national fraternities, right? Well, why not a national sorority? I've never started one before (thank God--I don't think my nerves could handle it! :p ), but as someone suggested, try the "Rush at UCSC" thread...it's about a girl who started a local with the intent to affiliate with a national. I think that would be the way to go. Good luck! :)

TKE209Sweethrt Check your PM. :)

I can say from experience.. When you get that charter to hang on your wall there's no better feeling! Good luck!

Rio_Kohitsuji 08-29-2002 09:45 AM

OKay, on this thread, I figured I should update you all for a second :) I'm rushing a local right now this semester *whees* but, if I believe that they aren't for me when it comes to pre-bid the idea of a new sorority is up for grabs :)

Do not raelly Know what your schools situation is but look at all alternatives!

I started a local Fraternity without recognition from anyone including the School!

I did not want to stay a local but affiliate with a National!

Beleive it our no, It was a tuff process but very short!

I started the Lacal In the Fall of 1965 and we Colonized in Sring of 1966 and Chartered in 1969!

This was a time of expansion but if not a lot of help from Fraternitys such as some Brothers from SX and TKE I dont know if I could have pulled it off!

If you do not feel right about the local Orgs., go to the Greek Life Advisor of your school and talk to them. If nothing there, contact the International Soroitys!

Get an Advisor from the Campus, People of like beleifs, and a structure to work by! Have a coat of arms, a badge, a pledge pin and NO HAZING IN YOUR CLAUSE!

Again, it depends on the situation of your school! Greeks may be be dwindeling because of the attitude of Greeks on Campus. Do charity events, PR, work ETC!

It is a big Job and well worth it if you can make it!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D  :)

AEPhiSierra 09-03-2002 12:36 AM

Of course I would say you should definitely go AEPhi, but I am a little impartial. ;)

Seriously though your best bet is get a group of people together and contact the specific national you would like to affiliate with and if you're not sure just contact NPC's expansion person. All the sororities love expanding so whoever you contact will probably be very eager to help you out.

Good luck and let everyone know if you make any progress.

Great advice AEPhiSierra.

It sounds like NPC is needed on your campus. You sound motivated enough about having a quality Greek experience that this might be exactly what you need to do. I would look on the site www.npcwomen.org read up on the NPC and then contact your Greek Life Advisor and discuss the possibility with them.
good luck,

I agree here! At my first university, there were inter/national fraternities and no inter/national sororities. A bunch of friends & I got together and formed an "interest group". The campus held presentations from inter/national sororities and now our campus is on their way to having natinal sororities! One local sorority has already colonized with Theta Phi Alpha and the interest group I was part of will be colonizing with Delta Phi Epsilon very soon!

I'm so proud of them!

Best of luck to you!

edited to include: It *is* a lot of work to colonize with an inter/national sorority, but I am sure all the work will be well worth the efforts when the chapter becomes successful

TPASteph 09-13-2002 11:25 AM

texas*princess, I'm so thrilled to hear that a chapter on your old campus affliated with Theta Phi Alpha. :D We're working to do the same thing right now except here it's a matter of Panhellenic expansion, we have support from Theta Phi Alpha already. If you don't mind me asking, what University did you go to? Thanks!

wants t start a chapter

TPA Steph and of course texas-princess:

The campus is Texas A&M Kingsville, about 45 miles from Corpus Christi. I am traveling in there tomorrow to begin the recruitment process with the interest group. Formal recruitment is Sunday through Friday. Theta Phi and DPhiE presented to three groups back in April and through mutual selection, two of the three groups will now be inter/national sororities. This campus once was called Texas Arts & Industries and later (in the late 1980's) became part of the A&M system. There were 3 or 4 nationals there in the 1960-1970's including Chi Omega and several others. Theta Phi and DPhiE are building a new greek system at Kingsville!

TPAStef, Denise_DphiE is correct - it is the Texas A&M University Kingsville campus! The campus is very excited to have NPC sororites to help the Greek system flourish!

I hear the Theta Phi Alpha colony is doing great! Best of luck to you with your expansion process!

Denise_DPhiE.. all I have to say is Wow! I have heard so many great things about you from Crystal! Best wishes to you & have a safe trip to Kingsville! My thoughts and prayers are with the young women of TAMUK always! They are going to do an excellent job, and I am just so proud of them! :)

TKE209Sweethrt,
do you have an update? :)

Rio_Kohitsuji 09-18-2002 05:35 PM

UPDATE!!!

Hello all!!!
Okay, well I received 2 invite's and more than likely -if- I had gone through w/everything I would have easily received 2 bids to choose from. BUT, just 5 minutes ago (yes..believe it or not) something struck me. A good friend of mine didn't receive an invite from one that I did and now she's thinking of pledging a soro that she's not really tight with..and I hate that. Ya know? So.....since this semester I'm too booked to pledge (yeah..I'm a commuter..) and 2 of my friends were going to go Greek but then found out they couldn't this semester due to too little time. So....I'm thinking..set up a local soro..and then -maybe- have a national come in later on down the road.

If you are all wondering why I changed my idea it is because w/every soro I rushed I just didn't feel that -connection- w/the girls. Also, just the little things got to me I guess, nothing bad, but, if I was going to pledge I want it to be a full-hearted effort and want, just not do it to get some letters. I'm going to get ahold of some girls that couldn't pledge this semester and start things up, hopefully since this is a small campus and I have very good repoire w/the other GLO's there shouldn't be a problem w/the emergence of another GLO. *prays everything goes well* Well, this is my update and I'm rambling..so I'll end here for now :) teehee :)

Pro-Greek love,
Kayla

texas*princess 09-18-2002 06:24 PM

Best of luck to you !!!

Rio_Kohitsuji 09-24-2002 05:30 PM

I'm so angry!!

GRR!!!
I'm kinda upset right now..nothing to do with me mind you. I just found out from a friend that "E" (who has rushed for 2 years every sorority) hasn't gotten a bid from the sorority that she was really hoping for. "E" is one of the sweetest girls I have ever met and she's one of the few chicks that I would trust a drunken boyfriend with!! See, when I first started partying and all I was the non-greek who didn't know anyone but my boyfriend's brothers, and she was the first person to show me the ropes and just be a friend to hang out with when Dusty went off w/his brothers for a bit. Yet, when girls who are simply -trash- get bids w/no questions asked from the sororities and rule out the quality girls at times. *sighs* I mean, I've gotten invites and bids when I was only half-interested in the GLO, but when she's completely pro-greek and willing to be apart of a sisterhood and truely deserves it she's put down. Why, oh why??

If I get this new local like I want set up..she's first on my list, no matter what.

CutiePie2000 09-24-2002 05:38 PM

It is all here, too!

How Do I Start a New Chapter?

In approaching a National to come to your campus, you would write to the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) at www.npcwomen.org to their Extention Committee.
Basically, no group can come to your campus, unless the campus is declared open for extension by the NPC.

I copied this from a website, which should help you:
________________

What can I do if I have a special interest in having ______ on a campus?

NPC guidelines provide for orderly extension procedures. _____ may express interest in colonization by filing a letter of interest with a college or university. However, no contact with students may be initiated by the Fraternity unless the campus is officially open for extension.

_______ alumnae interest and opinions are very important to us when we consider extension opportunities. Alumnae may advise the Fraternity of your interest and your recommendation will be carefully considered. We want to hear from you!

How is NPC (National Panhellenic Conference) involved with the extension process?

The Extension Committee of the National Panhellenic Conference serves as a clearinghouse for colleges, Panhellenics, and individual fraternities in the field of extension. All NPC groups have agreed upon fair and orderly extension procedures, which are directed by the NPC extension committee. _________ carefully follows these guidelines and cooperates fully with both the local college administration and NPC.

The Extension Committee of NPC will assist any campus wishing to add an NPC sorority chapter or establish a Panhellenic system. The Extension Committee will also assist any local sorority wishing to affiliate with _________ or any other National Panhellenic Conference member group. Any individual, college Panhellenic, or local sorority needing informationshould contact:

Extension Committee of NPC
NPC Central Office
3905 Vincennes Rd.
Indianapolis, IN 46268
(317) 872-3185 - phone
(317) 872-3192 - fax
npccentral@npcwomen.com
www.npcwomen.org

How does a local sorority or interest group become a ________chapter?

__________does accept local sororities/interest groups as colonies. However, the process differs depending on the local situation. Again, we follow NPC guidelines.

How are new members chosen for a colony?

Colony members may be members of a local sorority seeking international affiliation, or new members may be selected by a Fraternity team of officers participating in a recruitment effort on a campus. Sometimes _____ is the only group colonizing on a campus; sometimes __________ participates in a multiple colonization in concert with other NPC groups.

Do we ever have the chance to reestablish a closed chapter?

Yes, and often we have done so. However, this is entirely dependent upon the campus situation. According to NPC guidelines, the invitation for recolonization must come from the campus Panhellenic.

What is my first step if I have an interest group on a campus and want to pursue affiliation with ____________?

It is unethical for an NPC fraternity to establish a chapter on a campus without the approval of the proper authority on that campus. The "proper authority" in most cases is the college Panhellenic on that campus. In the case of a campus without an organized college Panhellenic, the administration would constitute "proper authority".

The local interest group must receive the approval from the proper authority on their campus before pursuing affiliation with _______________. Please contact the National Panhellenic Conference Extension Committee with any questions about this process.
