Numbers Up or Down?
After MTV gets done with their series on Sorority Life do you think Greek Life numbers will go up or down?
|
I don't know what exactly it's going to do. I do think it MAY actually do something to eliminate a few stereotypes though. I'll have to admit that I'm a little surprised after watching it... Wasn't what I expected at all.
|
Up. Simply because so many of the sisters are not the stereotypical sorority girl in looks or personality. It might make people who have said "oh, I'm not the sorority type" think again and realize there IS no "sorority type" - THAT is the real media myth.

unaffected
i think it'll be about the same, nationally.

i'm not sure if this show will even take off like MTV thinks it will. I think there were possibly more people who are already Greek watching it last night than non-Greek. (The Greeks wanting to see what kind of debacle MTV would make of it).
The first episode didn't impress me, i found the camera shots annoying as hell. I'm don't agree with a lot of their rush process, etc. but that's not my place to say. I don't think the show will stay very popular, just judging from the first episode. I think it will blow over. I myself am not even sure if i'll watch it again. It's fairly predictable whats' going to happen- the two Curly Haired Wild Childs are going to stir up a sh!tload of trouble and pick on that poor sweet girl (jennifer???? not sure of the name- the Native American one) and the rest of the people who aren't as pretty and partiers as they are. Anyway, i've breathed a sigh of relief. Although who knows what else MTV has up their sleeve for this. But i don't think it's going to be one of MTV's bigger shows. |
I think that they will go up a little because of the show. But I also think that the numbers are going to go way up this year because of September 11. We had almost twice as many guys join this Spring from Fall and one of our National HQ guys said that is the buzz in the GLO world. GLO membership and interest tends to go in 10-20 year waves ( we are in the middle of a low one) and it looks like we are about to turn around and go up on a new wave of interest.

I would like to say that I think all of this MTV stuff is actually helping Greek life...especially my sorority. It's the middle of July and we have had 17 girls contact us about joining already. I hope overall Fall recruitment numbers will go up because of all the publicity :)
|
Although I do not think that SAEPi is a good example of what girls should exepct, I do feel that this has brought attention to the greek community and has at least raised awareness of the greek system's existance enough that I think that girls will seek out info on recruitment when they otherwise might not have known that it was an option. However, I hope that they don't think that rush works the way that they showed on MTV, or they will be really surprised!
|
I think they way they showed Rush and how they chose the girls is going to cause a lot of grief during Fall Recruitment. Also, with the actives takling about the PNM's, I think the girls who go thru are going to feel weird because they'll be wondering if we talk about them too. However, I think it's awesome that the stereotype will hopefully not be looked at as much. I'm definately not the stereotype of a sorority girl, and I'm one of the most active sisters in the chapter.

If they are chicks looking for booze and a$$, definately.
If they are turned off by that kind of stuff, probably not. |
Depending on the type of girl, it could go either way.
|
I think the viewpoint on here is pretty negative towards the show and started negatively from before the show was aired.
So if Rush numbers go down the show might be blamed, if Rush number stay the same or go up, we will all say that despite the negative impact of the show people came out anyway lol. |
For sorority rush, even though the show is not painting the best picture, I think that the mere publicity that MTV is giving greek life could help numbers. Another way of putting it is there might be some girls that would not have considered rushing before, but the show might have "planted" a seed to convince them to go through rush.
|
I'm just affraid that it's gonna drive away girls that are "non-MTV" looking (about 90% of people in the world). I know poor Jennifer is going to get picked on by Jordan and Candace, and I'm affraid girls will think that's what goes on in all sororities when in fact most of the girls on my campus look like the off-camera actives and pledges on that show. I fear as a rushee that people will think I'm rushing just because of the show (girls in the house I'm rushing and non-greeks). Guess we can only wait and see. Maybe good things will come of it all. :)
|
This is exactly what I thought. The mere publicity of sororities will help boost numbers. I'm not saying it'll be the sort of folks that might be good sisters, but numbers will probably go up!

Our numbers were already on the upswing for both fraternity and sorority well before MTV.
The show- Like they say, even bad PR is still PR and if it doesn't get any worse than what I've seen, it may help. I don't like how the "fun" girls automatically stereotyped the new roommate. I do have a question. We can see the violations. Is this real time? Are the actives watching this as it unfolds or what? Sorry if these have been answered on another thread. |
In the South, it's unlikely to affect numbers at all, especially at the big schools. Rush is just what you "do".
Also, there was a baby boom in 1984. When I gave birth to/adopted the twins, everybody and their mom had a baby too. I've read a zillion articles about how nationally, that age group is the "bulge in the snake" or whatever that term is...it's sure true around here because school classes and activities have always been packed for that age group. At Valdosta, rush numbers are up and so are school numbers. We've already been sent a letter offering to release the girls from the required freshman dorm contract because of overcrowding. |
Carnation! Your entire post is so accurate! 1984--------EVERYONE was pregnant!
In the South, it's unlikely to affect numbers at all, especially at the big schools. Rush is just what you "do". LOL! Boy have you got THAT right! We need to have our son's dorm application in around the first of Sept. to assure him a DECENT room on campus! It's exploding! |
We have SO many freshmen coming in next year! My incoming class was 400, last year was 500, and i think it's around 600-700 this year! of course the school is letting more people in, but it's hard to believe my little school (of just over 1000) has more than 700 people interested in going to school there! Must be a lot of 18 year olds running around. :)
|
Well the numbers are looking better and better. If the numbers are going up it will definitely give us a better selection to choose from. A few weeks ago we had 17 girls interested in my sorority and now the number is up to 28! This is very good for our school because we are lucky if we have 28 people go through Formal Recruitment. My school sucks!!
