SoCalGirl 06-24-2002 08:17 PM

I've given up on all the other threads on this topic. Waaaay too long.

Has anyone seen the new commercial?

Life's a Bitch! And we have a house full of them! :o  :o

Yeah ladies, Mtv is definitely gonna portray you in a positive light.

TaraHopeful 06-24-2002 08:24 PM

I thought the same thing at first when everybody on here was talking about it, but when i went to the website and read the pledges comments and stuff, it seemed like it would be a interesting show...i dunno. I'm gonna watch it and if it's totally horrid, then i won't watch it again....ok maybe i will, but just to entertain myself. I have to ask you guys that ARE Greek, b/c i'm not, to fill me in on whether the show is a good portrayal of what really goes on.

Tara, last night's show was somewhat like what goes on in normal sorority life. I'll list the differences in the show versus reality, however, I can only speak from a national GLO's perspective. Please keep in mind that some local groups conduct rush and pledge periods differently than national groups do, and I'm not trying to speak for anyone else other than NPC groups.

1) No guys would be at a rush function -- ever.

2) Sisters wouldn't be talking about rushees during the parties -- usually voting occurs after each party has ended. In the chapter that I advise, the girls do silent voting so that they can voice any concerns they have without worrying that their words may influence someone else's vote. However, each chapter conducts voting differently, in the manner that works best for them.

3) We don't give bids to everyone who comes back to all of our rush parties. (sidenote: I think that SAEPi did a nice thing when they decided to give every rushee a chance to pledge. I know that they don't want to be known as a selective, exclusive group, which is the reason for offering so many bids. However, it is my opinion that being selective is sometimes a good thing because it "weeds out" potential problem sisters before they have a chance to really impact the sorority.)

4) We don't have "pledge houses" -- that's strictly an MTV thing.

5) We don't have girls wear pledge bracelets. (It would fall under our anti-hazing policies.)

Now, for the similarities:

1) We do have house rules that include no alcohol or drugs in the sorority house, no men in rooms other than common areas on the first floor, and no men in the house at all after a certain curfew. These rules apply to everyone living in the house, no matter if they are 21+ or not -- just like the SAEPi's rules do.

2) We do have weekly pledge meetings (we call them new member meetings) that help the girls to learn about chapter and sorority history during their pledge period.

3) We do have rush parties similar to the ones shown on MTV. However, those types of parties are more consistent with our informal parties that are held during the school year by chapters that have extra spots to fill. It's called Continuous Open Bidding. The luau theme is one that my chapter has used several times -- however, no guys are ever allowed and the rushees are never made to put on a skit while the sisters watch. If there is any type of skit going on, it's being done by the sisters for the rushees' entertainment.

Hope this helps to clarify a little. If you have specific questions, please post them or PM me about them. I'll be glad to answer if I can. :)

Very true and informative post, DZrose!

HA HA HA!!! At least we all know its only partially true!

TaraHopeful 06-26-2002 12:21 AM

All i have to say is that Pauli seems way too harsh! I mean, sure you don't want to invite everyone to pledge your sorority, but she was so mean about it. Her language and attitude kinda scared me. When i go through rush this fall, i don't want members saying "If she want's to leave, f**k her!" I mean honestly...if this is how the members are going to be when i rush...i'll fire back at them...ugh. Please Please tell me this isn't how a lot of the girls are....
Quite Intimidated~Tara

greeklawgirl 06-26-2002 12:35 AM

Oh Tara, you do NOT have to worry about someone being rude like that to you! I can only speak for myself and my chapter sisters, but I know that we would have sooner thrown ourselves in front of a truck than be openly rude to a PNM-guest.

And I'm also willing to bet my last dollar that no NPC woman would disagree with me.

TaraHopeful 06-26-2002 12:38 AM

"Phew"

::sigh of relief::

XOBear 07-01-2002 09:32 PM

I know we all bag on this show but is everyone watching tonight??

I think that Jordan chick gets the boot from the pledge house.

Sisterplum 07-01-2002 10:17 PM

I'm watching the show tonight....15 min to go!:D

I think Jordan's gonna get the boot too....can't wait to see!:)

I'm getting hooked on the show though...I think it's hilarious! I know none of my sisters is like that!:D

mmcat 07-01-2002 10:55 PM

the hair...the hair

i'm amazed at the amount of frou frou in ye olde pledge house.
they must have a product placement for hair spray.
poor jordan...no one gets the obvious...and neither does she...
:D mmcat

XOBear 07-02-2002 02:37 AM

yeah, I dont think Jordan got much from their little chat. Must be all the hair spray. (j/k... can you tell i am not fond of her?)

And those girls were soooo mean to the new girl... i think her name is Jessica.

:(

TaraHopeful 07-04-2002 12:17 PM

Ya i felt really bad for Jessica. She seems so sweet and nice and the girls just snub her off. She had to know that the girls would already have bonded though. I mean she was kind of the sixth wheel, but they were bitches to be so rude.

p.s. i was watchin this with my aunt and she said that she though jordan looked like a drag queen. i think she's good looking.....ah well. She does kind of over-do the makeup

PM_Mama00 07-22-2002 11:13 PM

Ok... I can't find the thread, so I'll use this one.

I've become addicted to Sorority Life. Those girls... ok just Amanda, Candace and Jordan, are making a mockary of real life Sorority Life. If u can't be around all those girls, then leave. If you don't want rules, then don't be part of an organization. EVERY organization has rules, unless they want it to be anarchy. I really think Jordan is trying, and that she's just trying to impress the other girls. I DONT LIKE AMANDA!

One more thing: WHO bia bia slaps Jessica at the bar in the next episode? I think it's Amanda!

EagleChick19 07-22-2002 11:17 PM

Pm_Mama00, Jessica says that Sylvia is the one that slaps her!

PM_Mama00 07-22-2002 11:39 PM

who's Sylvia?

Sylvia is Jessica's friend. I don't think she is another pledge. It looked like there's going to be a fight in the house with Jordan and think Amanda.

Actually, there is a pledge named Sylvia.

DWAlphaGam 07-23-2002 09:55 AM

This year, I am very happy that we have sophomore recruitment, because (hopefully) we won't get many, if any, questions related to this show. Anyone who was halfway observant as a freshman should realize that much of this stuff doesn't really happen. At least, we won't be getting the "do you have a pledge house?" question.

Random question (I'm not sure if this was answered in another thread or not and I'm too lazy to look for it): I noticed that DZRose had brought up the fact that pledge bracelets were hazing. I don't understand how making them wear a bracelet is different from making them wear a new member pin, like national GLOs do. Can anyone answer this? Thanks!

I think the thing that makes the bracelets smack of hazing, is the fact that they are required to wear it at all times (except, of course, when they are engaging in "un-sigma-like behavior"), and to my knowledge, no GLO requires their pledges/new members to wear their pledge pin at all times. The pledge pin is simply the insignia that they are privileged to wear until they are initiated and eligible to wear the active badge.

At least when I was a pledge, we were only required to wear our pins to pledge meetings, and were encouraged to wear them when we chose to wear pin attire to classes (we couldn't wear it with jeans or shorts--had to be dressed appropriately). It's the "requirement" of wearing the bracelet at all times that is suspect, I think. I think they stopped requiring pledges to wear pledge ribbons at all times before I pledged--for the same reason...sounds harmless, I know, but the powers that be have determined it is a mild form of hazing to require such things as wearing bracelets all the time, carrying pledge notebooks, addressing actives in a certain way, etc. It's a product of our PC society, and not wanting such activities to lead to harmful/dangerous hazing.

I could be wrong though...maybe some chapters do require the pledge pin to be worn 24/7?

Optimist Prime 07-23-2002 11:31 AM

Jordan and Candace are mad at each other. You think they will mud wrestle?

APhi 07-23-2002 11:51 AM

I agree that the pledge bracelet seemed like hazing. It seems like under the current NPC rules you can't "require" the pledges to do anything the actives don't have to do as well.
I was amused last night though because there was finally something on that show I could relate to. Their silly games like "Find someone born in the same month as you" was actually something we used to do as icebreaker games. My boyfriend just smiled, shook his head and went into his obvious restraint mode. You know, the anything I say will only get me in trouble so I'll just smile and keep my mouth shut look.
I really hate Candace and Jordan at the moment. If you can't stand a house full of girls and all kinds of girly togetherness then maybe sorority life isn't for you. I'm willing to bet they'll drop out after the show is over.

TaraHopeful 07-23-2002 02:10 PM

On the Sigma-AEP website (link is in one of the other threads or you can get to it thru yahoo search), Candace and Jordan are in a lot of the pictures in the "photo" section of the website. I'm guessing that if they dropped out, their pictures would be taken off....but i could be wrong. So, i don't think they'll drop out. I think they just need a reality check of what they have committed to and what that should mean to them. I think jordan will do fine, candace seems a bit "rebellious" but she seems like a good person anyways. Well enough of my ranting....just my opinion.....

Sisterplum 07-23-2002 02:29 PM

I would have to disagree with y'all on the wearing bracelets is hazing thing. We have our pledges make and wear necklaces that they are asked to wear at all times (unless at a bar or drinking, then they are to remove it.....and of course while sleeping and showering)

In no way is this considered hazing....well, in our opinions anyway. Y'all may feel differently about it, but we don't feel this is hazing in any sense of the word.

I also know that Zeta Psi requires that all their pledges wear their pledge pin at all times (except of course under the same situations as us....when drinking, sleeping or showering). I know this cause both my brother and husband pledged the Zetes.

prophet 07-23-2002 07:47 PM

Won't even lie....

I won't even lie, I like the show and I'm a guy:D it's great! I watched it last night with my girl friend and her sorority sister, both Alpha Phis. People the show is all a funny soap-opera. If any college person thinks that a sor./frat. is going to have two houses, hahahaha, what are they doing in college. Plus, how can a local org. afford that? If people believe every thing they see on T.V, shame on them. Sure M.T.V is wrong to put shit like that on the air, but what can we do. Let's complain, but see what we are complainning about. I dislike the fact they have not told auidances that this is a local sorority, because I know if it was a national, there would be one less chapter around (they Sigma, as they call themselves HAZE). Ok so "Sorority Life" is alittle much out of true sorority reality, but it is a show, and a very intresting one. We get to see alittle hazing on the side of the actives, alittle advertizment by the actives(the pledge mom had a SAE-Pi shirt with GREEK 101 down the sleve, and the house MTV gave them for a pledge house), prejudice by actives(remember the treatment some of the rushes got when they said they were not Jewish in the first episodes), and some clear pledge mis-behavior(to many to say). Kinda of, remember people "kinda of" what we all do in our own org. I can say, I have been prejudice(I dis-like guys who talk about dis-respecting women and etc.) I can say as a pledge I did not always do what my Big Bro's said(of course I did not get caught) so in fact it is alittle shady at times; but okay so is real life. It is fun to watch. For everyone who is reading this....I think Jessica is wack and is the real girl who is joinning SAE-Pi for the wrong reasons. I have a gut feeling about that. I see her getting crazy at the bar but at home is all about what ever the Big Sisters say. See, I think she is in it for the guys and not the sisterhood, but I can be wrong. I think SAE-Pi has kept Amanda, Candance, and Jordan because they are a good look and from the looks of the SAE-Pi house they need em'. I also think that those three will be a good attraction to other girls who want to join a sorority for parties, please remember people, we all join frats/sors. for different reasons. The reason you and I choose to go greek may and probably is different from one another. Nobodys reason is better or worse than another. In time I feel that Amanda, Candance, and Jordan will look at the meaning that I joined FKT, "true brotherhood" in their case "true sisterhood."

lol

I tried to find the original thread and I gave up.

I was ROLLIN when I heard Jessica say tearfully "Sylvia slapped me" and I think the pledge master at the club goes "She WHAT?".
I know it's wrong but it just sounds too funny when they show it.

The whole show makes greek life look bad. Jordan is acting like a idiot, but I do think because she is pretty she gets a lot of flack for it. You know the saying "don't hate be because I'm beautiful" thing.

The vice president(with the glasses, Leah?) is so pretty to me. I also like the pledge master's hair. It's cute!

I just love the pledge educator too and the president (Leah) would of been our president too. I love the show- I see the original group - a lot like mine- especially the two I just mentioned- and we personally did get a Jordan in the mix once in awhile and you just have to help her see that dirty dancing and getting so drunk that you ram into windows is just not the right way to go! You help mentor these kind of girls and I think the pledge educator and Leah are trying to do this. Come on girls- we've all had a Jordan in the mix!

Sisterplum,

To be quite honest, I wouldn't care one way or the other if my chapter required girls to wear a bracelet, necklace, etc, that identified them as a pledge/new member of the sorority 24/7. To me, it's harmless and it serves to show sisters who may not be around a whole lot who is a pledge/NMand who isn't. It is in no way hurtful or embarrassing, and I think most pledges/new members would have no problem wearing something like that.

However, NPC rules state that anything that is required for a pledge/NM and not a sister is considered to be hazing, which is why we don't allow things like that anymore. The anti-hazing statutes are pretty strict, and we have to abide by them if we want to remain in good standing on campus. The end result is that a lot of fun, harmless activities have been done away with. To me, it's sad and is kind of like throwing the baby out with the bath water. On the other hand, I also understand that NPC is only trying to do what's best for its girls. I may not agree with every hazing definition or rule that is set forth, but out of respect to my organization, I'll go along with them.

Hope this clears things up a little! :)

DWAlphaGam 07-24-2002 11:55 AM

The reason I asked about the bracelets was because in my chapter, and in all of the NPC and IFC chapters at my school, we were required to wear our pins at all times during our new member period. I think it's kind of stupid to consider that hazing, since it's a good way to get pr and show off your new members. I personally liked wearing my pin for that reason. No one made a big deal if you forgot to wear your pin (at least, not in my chapter...what happened in other chapters is a different story), so it's not like any mental, physical, or emotional harm came from doing it.

Sisterplum 07-24-2002 10:36 PM

dzrose,
I see your point! I don't know much about NPC rules or anything (being that I am in a local and all!). It does seem kinda out there to consider wearing necklaces/pins/etc. as hazing, but if I were in your case I would abide by the rules as you have done!:)

Thanks for clearing it up for me!:)

chideltjen 07-25-2002 02:31 AM

sisterplum,
i too am a local girl and we require our girls to wear there pins all the time. yes, there was a time where if you weren't wearing your pin, you and your class was punished in some form... but those hazin days are done and we tell the girls to wear the pins out of pride and to let everyone know you are a proud member of our sorority.

as for the show... i am addicted since the show is so close to home. (They are in Davis, I am at Sac State.) It's funny to see the places you recognize. But I find it amusing that MTV "omitted" any organized activity with the sorority. We don't see Sigmas going to mixer/exchanges/whatever and dressing up in crazy outfits, we don't see them going to class, we don't see entire chapter meetings, philanthropies with other organizations... the list goes on. To me, MTV is making Greek life on the davis campus look... well... boring!
