Wal-Mart has heard the complaints!

Just today I stopped by a Neighborhood Walmart (that's a WalMart grocery store -- no clothes and such there) and I saw something that would be GREAT if every store would adopt it.

SELF CHECKOUT LANES!

This was awesome.. no waiting in line.. no dealing with some teenage cashier who couldn't give a crap..... Just scan it, pay, bag my stuff and leave.

Was a good experience!

damasa 06-23-2002 08:42 PM

How do you have to pay for it? A debit card or credit card, something like that?

Kevin 06-23-2002 08:44 PM

It looks like it'd take cash and charge... And I believe the machines would scan the checks and debit your checking account. I didn't write a check but I have written checks for stuff at Wal Mart and I always got to keep the check after they put it through a machine.

Strange stuff.

You can pay many ways, cash, credit cards, debit, etc. They are quite nice:D

CrimsonTide4 06-23-2002 08:45 PM

SELF CHECK OUT IS THE BOMB

They have it here at the Giant Eagle, Kroger, and Meijer and it is a BLESSING fa sho. Now only person you can b*tch and moan at for being slow is yourself.

You can pay (at the ones I have been to) any way you want, Cash, check, CC, Debit, etc.

I have not been to a Wal Mart since Heck was a pup but I will look when I get to Charlotte this weekend.

damasa 06-23-2002 08:48 PM

Ok, so I have another question....how will store security know if you don't scan all the things you buy? Like, scan one thing put it in the bag, don't scan something else, put it in the bag....that kind of thing.

Kevin 06-23-2002 08:49 PM

Well I'm not for sure... but I put it on this conveyer that slid it through this contraption that was shielded by acrylic. So I'm assuming it removes some kind of anti-theft system decoding there.

Well @ Giant Eagle, they have 4 of those self check out expresses and they are grouped together with a cashier standing there to process checks, check I.D., help the clueless, and help if any problems arise.

Seems like the rest of retail is just catching up. That stuff has been around for a while, at least in Ohio, in 1999 when I was up there foing an internship. I loved grocery shopping.
Having worked in security, I do know it is supposed to monitored by an employee at the top of the conveyor, who has his/her own station. This same person would accept cash payments. Thus, it is a "trust but verify" relationship.

TLAW 06-23-2002 09:33 PM

I tried it for the first time a couple of months ago. It worked, and I will go back. I just sometimes get irked at lines, especially those low-budget clowns who try to put 12 items in a 10-item express lane. So retrograde.
 :p

:o I do that all of the time. For example, 10 packs of Kool Aid count as one item for me. :o :D  LOL, sorry but I know how to swipe my items QUICKLY.

Kmart has had self-checkout lanes for a few years.

I recently saw one at a supermarket. Scan your own items, then pay by cash or credit card (I don't think it took checks). The odd thing was that, although there were no cashiers, there were baggers...

Kevin 06-24-2002 01:36 PM

KMarts in Oklahoma never had it... and then they all closed. So I guess it's just Wallie World for now here..

(Wallie world of course raised prices once KMart left:mad: )

I LOVE self checkout at King Soopers. In fact I'd rather make a couple of small trips for groceries per week than one big one just so I can use those things.
The only problem is you're not really exempt from stupidity over there. Seems like there's always someone who doesn't know you may still have to stand in line... not just butt in and take the first one available. Worse yet... there's often someone standing in front of one of the machines acting deeply confused and seeking the help of the guy in the middle who is there for produce, cigarettes, stamps, etc. Fortunately there are three other machines so it doesn't hold you up too much.

Eirene_DGP 06-24-2002 01:47 PM

As far as the U-Scan (it's official name), it has a scale to make sure you scan every item, but it is not fool proof. The grocery store that I have worked at since high school does not have it because it is in a high risk neighborhood. But I will have to agree with the rest of the comments, it is a lot faster and you don't have to deal with stupid BS at the check out.

I hope it makes its way out to California! They had this at Kroger's in Indiana when I lived there (1998-99ish), and I *loved* it! So easy for those quick trips... just as APhi said, I'd make a few small trips just to use this option! :)

Where are you in California? They have U-Scans at Ralphs, which is a dominant grocery player in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

Steeltrap - I have a Ralphs right down the street from me... I'm in OC. But I haven't noticed the UScan thing. I'll have to ask. Thanks for the tip!!! :)

The one on 17th Street and Tustin Avenue in Costa Mesa has one, for sure. I've used the UScan there.

Actually...

We talked about these in my cnsumer behavior class last year, and studies show that it takes longer to complete a transaction on average. However, because the customer is in control, it FEELS shorter. I love usig them, There are some Winn-Dixies hat allow you to feed your cash to a mschine and it spits out your change - coins and bills. Pretty spiffy!

navane 06-24-2002 07:55 PM

Eh? I live in Long Beach, CA and I have never seen one of those new-fangled devices. :) I also go to San Diego frequently and I've never seen one there either. Someone remind me to shop at the Costa Mesa Ralphs! :)

......Kelly :)
