Greek Womens Mag
Its been mentioned, is anyone serious about this? I was wanting to make one for my campus at one time. Does anyone want to help get it off the ground?
Ideas? Maybe have articles from our own mags (ie, the Phi Sig Sphinx...) |
Awesome Idea
Well I haven't even rushed yet, but I can't believe that there isn't a magazine like this already. I've done alot of broadcasting and journalism so if and when I join the greek community, I would love to help out. It'd be great to be there when things first get rolling. I also think (especially as someone still on the outside) that it would be a great way to get some good publicity out to people who may want to join but hear only controversial things.
So, are you thinking you would focus more on the national level or on specific chapters? What kind of articles would you include? Like philanthropist of the month all the way to cutest theme parties? (hey wait, that would be very similar to this very message board...lol) Maybe you could do an internet magazine...I hear those are a good way to start. Anyway, I hope you go for it, and good luck! I think this is a great idea! I could contribute some articles from the local/Up and Coming National point of view. :)

I'd Be Interested
I am one of the editors of my sorority magazine, and I think this is a great idea...

YOU ALL ROCK!
Wow, granted its not a HUGE response- but WOW! Im so happy people like this idea!
Heres my scribblings while reading all your input! All Women Greek Magazine: Do we want to start it on a website? Name for it? Real Sorority Life? Greek Women Today? GW? What? Publishing: I can talk to the people who publish our NED Notes for TBS, about costs, processes... it dosent have to be fancy in the beginning! Costs: Subscription price? Donation? Maybe send a draft to NPC to see if they can aid? JoyfulMuse: I think an outsider's POV would be awesome! And if you rush etc- we could follow you through the process, or something.... Philantrhopist of the month- Greek 101 does this with chapers in its catalog, or maybe it someone else, but they do- and I love it! (and not only cos a Phi Sig chapter was in the top 3) POVs from social, honorary, etc Party ideas, themes GC topics as articles, such as the MTV thing, written well of course Fraternity POV Local and U&C POV ideas, tips, etc Tips for Rush, New Members, Chapter Ops etc Help for New Chapters Articles from National Mags Tradtion spotlight- like if you have a really cool traditon in the chapter or org Chapter spotlight/bio Org Spotlight/bio *breathe* Okay what do you think? If you want to, we can move discussion to my message board on my site: http://www.geocities.com/starletali or keep it here. I am absolutely serious about starting this, and I would love help/input/someone who knows more than me/people who know less than me - basically other serious people, cos I think this could totally rock! Luvnstuff Alison If youre on, IM me! StarletAngel521 |
I have way too much time on my hands. Id love to help. I just graduated and went alumni, so I would like to keep involved with greek life, not only my sorority. Keep me informed.
|
Sounds like a fun idea! I like the fact that I get to learn about different sororities on Greekchat, why not have it in a magazine?! It would be fun! I would be willing to write something for it. Not sure what, btu I would love to. Maybe something about Theta chapters around my state or seomthing. Well we will see what happens I guess!
:) :) :) |
That Idea Is HOT!!!
Yeah AngelPhiSig, count me in! I'd love to help. I can write and take pictures. Lemme Know wassup.:D |
Brain is foggy, but. . .
There is (or was?) a magazine entitled "Fraternity and Sorority Magazine" that I have received through my GLO because I am on national staff. They sent it to us one year I guess as a "see what you think" kind of thing. It contained articles selected from the different GLO magazines currently published. I THINK it was published by the National Fraternity Editor's Association? ( I don't even know if that is the right name!) I'm going to convention in 2 days:D :D so I'll ask around there.
If I remember correctly, this magazine was not widely circulated to collegiate greeks (maybe one to each chapter, if the GLO decided to purchase it?). Anyway, I will see if I can find out something, and bring back some ideas/things to consider. BTW, my husband used to be the circulation director for a state magazine that was free, but going to a paid publication. He can give you LOTS of things to consider when you get to that point!! GOOD LUCK!!! Keep me posted on how things are going!! |
That's a great idea! I would love to be involved if possible.
|
I think this is such an awesome idea.
There is a publication in Columbia, MO that is published by a Univ. of Missouri Greek Alum. They try to cover all things greek at Mizzou. It might be helpful for some ideas. It's called the Greek Chronicle. www.greekchronicle.com |
If you need help, I would love to help out on it :D
|
T would love to see ya as the first center fold:D
Hows NY UP STATE NY!? Luv ya sweety!!!!! See Ya in the Movies! |
Well, I'd be for it!
I think it should target Greek members, not Greek affairs personnel (not that they couldn't read it, but they probably already have a publication). We all read our own sorority's magazines, but so rarely do I ever hear about other GLOs. Who's expanding, what trends are happening in rush, what campuses are expanding (or forbidding) GLOs, how alums are staying involved, what NPC is doing ... I would advise starting with a website. Print costs, even with a controlled circulation model, are expensive. The web is a much more cost-effective method of publication, at least until a reader base is established. |
Cheers to my sister FuzzieAlum for focusing a great idea!
|
I have already started planning one out, esp. since I posted on the other thread!
I have been wanting to get this out but didnt think there was a demand. Who ever is serious Pm me and I will tell what I have so far. |
I guess I should let you all know where i am so far. I have never started a magazine before, nor have i a degree in journalism, but i think this is a great idea and am at the info gathering stage. I am sure I am gonna need start up money for printing and am thinking of the costs associated, and the possiblity of a business loan but honestly I dont know if this is feasible.
I do want a name and think that "Greek Woman" just about sums it up. If anyone feels this is no good please post or PM your suggestions. I agree with FuzzieAlum that the mag should focus on the members but I also want to include info on the groups and greek affairs too. It would be an all incompassing magazine. One that would be a reference to all greek women and potential future members for clarification and information. All ideas would be helpful!!!! My email is hilerwendy@cs.com and is the preferred way to get in touch with me at this point. Wish me luck!! |
Those ideas sound great. I think we should showcase the women in their groups that are making a difference in their GLO's as well as on campus and in classes. A part that showcases philanthropies and the positive influence they have on the groups would be cool.
But just the mag in general sounds like fun. |
If anyone could email me some pics. Either pics of your chapter, when you go out, pics of your crests, or I would really like groups that are in letters with women of other groups in there letters hanging together!
I am trying to develope the first cover! Thanks! |
Is this magazine/website focusing on collegiate GLOs only? And what about co-ed orgs (such as Alpha Phi Omega)? I never joined a sorority in college, but I still consider myself a greek woman because of APO . Also, will you include such orgs as Beta Sigma Phi Sorority?
I think this idea sounds great! I love learning about other organizations ideals, service, etc... |
My only question about calling it "Greek Women", I would be afraid that people would think that it was for those who are ethnically greek.
|
I agree with MaggieAXD. In fact, the Assoc. of Fraternity Advisors has urged us to discontinue the use of "greek" and replace it with sorority and fraternity.
How about "Sorority Woman Today" |
Quote:
LOL...being a Greek-American myself, that's exactly what I thought when I first saw the name! :D |
How about a cover (for any issue) that have a picture of a woman in her letters for all the orgs. that want to be featured or help with the magazine. It would be kind of neat if you could get them all together for like a group pic.
