More MTV Stereotypes, argh!

Okay, so I got my new issue of US Weekly today, and just read the article "Which Stars Were in Sororities?" It said that MTV's documentary got them wondering about celebrities and their Greek ties. It says that they asked Jenny Oakson, "Greek-life editor of the college news service U-Wire" for the scoop. Here are the stereotypes the "Greek-life" editor perpetuated:

Delta Gamma (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Patricia Heaton, Joan Lunden, Betsey Johnson): "In all the Big 12 schools, DGs are referred to as 'dirty girls.' They're known as slutty"

Delta Delta Delta (Katie Couric, Leeza Gibbons, Farrah Fawcett): "The sorority hasn't done much to reshape its reputation for being dumb and is sort of the sorority punching bag."

Delta Zeta (Courteney Cox Arquette, Neve Campbell, Sharon Stone): " They're good girls without much of a national reputation, which is a good thing, because you usually only hear about the people who raise hell."

Kappa Kappa Gamma (Ashley Judd, Jane Pauley, Kate Jackson): "AKA Kappa Kappa Glama. Kappas often set the trends on campus. They're fashionable and wear lots of lip gloss."

FuzzieAlum 06-20-2002 07:46 PM

Oh, yeah, I think Katie Couric and I think "dumb." Not.

So who else thinks it's time for an all-Greek women's magazine?

theta sig agd 06-20-2002 07:50 PM

I DOOO!!!!!!!!

I wonder what it takes to start a magazine?

chithetalove 06-20-2002 08:53 PM

wait a minute. this woman doesn't even have her facts straight! wasn't betsey johnson in azd? cause i go to syracuse university which is where betsey johnson graduated from, and during rush i remember her being on one of azd's composites on the walls of their house.

33girl 06-20-2002 09:10 PM

actually, this has nothing to do with MTV.

I know that U-Wire always jumps on negative Greek stories, but I didn't think that they would say something so journalistically questionable.

Plus, I agree with chithetalove, this woman is talking out of her sphincter. This is the first I ever heard of Sharon Stone being in a sorority and believe me, I have heard every fact possible about Sharon Stone (she is from Meadville PA) when she was in her "it" phase. Also I thought Courtney Cox was AXO or XO.

kdonline 06-20-2002 09:55 PM

neve?!

Delta Zeta (Courteney Cox Arquette, Neve Campbell, Sharon Stone):

Neve Campbell went to college?!

I believe she's Canadian (not that it matters) and I know she was married at like 19...

dzrose93 06-20-2002 10:20 PM

Don't know where that so-called Greek Life editor got her DZ facts from, but they're completely wrong. Delta Zeta Headquarters doesn't have any of those celebrities on our list of famous DZ women. As much as I'd love to claim some of them, it's just not right to go around making up affiliations like that with no evidence.

CutiePie2000 06-20-2002 10:28 PM

Some thoughts...

1. I hope they get in hot water for defamation....I don't appreciate my GLO's membership being called "slutty".

2. I don't know Betsey Johnson's affiliation, but I wish she was one of ours because I LOVE HER STUFF! If she is an AXiD, then lucky AXiD! :D

3. The Tri Delta thing is harsh and brutal. And along with Katie Couric, they missed Deborah Norville, who is not only an anchorwoman (okay...so it is Inside Edition), but also she is a former America's Junior Miss, and you must have musical talent and brains to win that! Furthermore, Farrah Fawcett was a Tri Delta Pledge only.

4. Neve Campbell is indeed Canadian. If she even *is* a DZ, she likely didn't pledge DZ in Canada (DZ at Brock University is closed and DZ at University of Windsor is pretty new). To be honest, I don't think she went to college, as she was appearing on such fine TV programming as "Catwalk" (this was pre-"Party of 5").
I have never heard of Sharon Stone having GLO affiliation. And the Courtney Cox thing, I have heard she is a XO.

Whoever wrote that article probably watched SCREAM (a movie which has both Neve Campbell & Courtney Cox in it), saw the sorority house in it and thought it was real.

RubberSoul 06-20-2002 11:36 PM

I don't believe I have ever heard of Courteney Cox being a XO. But I did recently find out that Lucy Liu was......that could bring all kinds of mega bitch-queen fallout!!!!!!!!!!!!

chithetalove 06-21-2002 12:28 AM

bitch fallout? cause of lucy liu? but i like lucy liu :(

Colleenie 06-21-2002 12:51 AM

I hate when this type of article comes out - it always happens, the author gets his/her info wrong. I wonder what the celebrities think when they see they have been identified in the wrong sorority or in a sorority at all. And the nicknames listed were completely uncalled for. It just makes the author of the article and his/her source look immature and unintelligent.
As for the all greek womens magazine...I LOVE the idea - sign me up for a subscription! :D

LeslieAGD 06-21-2002 10:28 AM

If Courtney Cox IS Greek, then members of practically every sorority have tried to claim her. I was once told she was an AGD too, which she isn't.

shadokat 06-21-2002 10:46 AM

Comments on some of the inaccuracies:

Neve Campbell, from her Official site: "Neve dropped out of school at age 15! "All of a sudden I'm 15, and the member of a fantastic [dance] company. So it didn't make a lot of sense to say, 'Oh, I'm not going to take Phantom of the Opera because I need to learn more about history."

Sharon Stone: "Sharon Stone went to Edinboro University at age 15 and graduated with a degree in creative arts." No mention of greeks.

Courtney Cox: "Upon graduation, she left Alabama to study architecture and interior design at Mount Vernon College. After one year she dropped out to a pursue a modelling career" Mount Vernon doesn't appear to even have GLOs.

These folks need to get the facts straight.

These women ARE NOT NOT NOT NOT Delta Zeta Sisters! When will this ever end? LOL.

What kind of journalist is this person?

GreekGuide 06-21-2002 10:55 AM

This DZ site says that Neve, Sharon and Courtney were all DZ's.
It's listed at the very bottom.
???

http://www.angelfire.com/ia/deltazeta/

I wonder where they got that info?

Great idea on the mag by the way!!!

GreekGuide 06-21-2002 11:00 AM

Now check this DZ site out. It possibly sets the records straight.

http://www.geocities.com/singwithste...famousdzs.html

imadeltaz 06-21-2002 11:01 AM

They got that info because many of the Delta Zeta webmasters have been mis-informed from years of rumors and speculation. As Delta Zeta's Alumnae Web Tech Consultant, I can assure you that we are doing everything possible to squelch these rumors and get the correct information out there. When I have more time, I will post a list of Delta Zeta TV personalities, politicians, writers and VIPs.

That website also hasn't been updated since the year 2000, and is therefor running against DZ policy for websites (we require up to date maintenance). It's a shame as I guarantee that chapter's webmaster is long gone, taking the password to the FTP with her. Until people stop visiting that site, Anglefire will probably keep hosting it and these rumors will persist in perpetuity.

Hi everyone.
Anyone whom has been ticked off by this article, please email them at letters@usmagazine.com
i just got done writing them.
Even though i'm not a member of either of the groups blasted, I was offended by the harsh stereotype and the lack of fact checking.
Please write to them to let them know that us Greeks are sick of this B.S.!

RockChalk 06-21-2002 01:37 PM

Is there more to the article than what was posted here? I want to be sure I've read the whole thing before writing in.

And maybe I'm just hanging out with the wrong people, but I go to a Big 12 school and I have never heard DGs referred to as "dirty girls." (Not that they deserve to be called that anyway, of course!) Whoever wrote this article obviously did zero research.

kddani 06-21-2002 01:40 PM

I went out and bought the magazine at lunch (yeah, i know, shouldn't have given them the money but i wanted to see if anyone else got bashed).
What has already been posted is the ENTIRE article. No one else gets ripped on, this is all the information in the magazine.
I really hope DG and Tri Delt nationals get involved.

kddani 06-21-2002 01:58 PM

Additional note: you can also email the source quoted in the article, Jenny Oakson at jenny@uwire.com
Yes, i am at work bored with nothing to do, so i can track down these people :O)
www.uwire.com is the U-wire website

FuzzieAlum 06-21-2002 02:38 PM

Yes, Betsey Johnson is an AXD, and my personal fave famous alum!

kddani 06-22-2002 09:15 AM

i emailed both US Weekly magazine and the individual who it was quoted to at lunchtime yesterday and didn't receive a response. I don't expect to get much of a response from the magazine, but i'm hoping that i'll hear from the individual. As soon as i hear anything, i'll post it on here.

Yea, I know... I'm from Saegertown, where Sharon was actually from (she claims to be from Meadville... the "BIG" city... heh). She grew up in the house down the road from me. She was also Ms. Crawford County, and she's never aknowleged it or visited any of the pageants since.

I never knew she was in a sorority... anyone know what college/university she went to?

I'll be most interested to hear!

author of article

If you go to uwire.com, its interesting to note that the author of the article is also the managing editor

ruhbekuhaopi 06-25-2002 12:06 PM

First of all, Katie Couric went to the University of VA, which is a great school. Secondly, I have never gotten the impression that Tri-delts were dumb or whatever. I go to a fairly prestigious liberal arts school and those girls aren't dumb.

DenverDeeZee 06-25-2002 12:44 PM

I also just sent an email to both of the addresses that were provided. We shall see if they responde.

I thought that NONE of these women were members of DZ. That article was very confusing. It shows how credible the writer is.
