How Old Are the Nationals AT YOUR SCHOOL?

With Kappa Sig being kicked out, I realized that they're the 2nd oldest National fraternity at SDSU, so I was thinking:

What I mean is, what year did the first National GLOs come to your school?

I forget the dates, but the first three National Fraternities at San Diego State are Theta Chi, then Kappa Sigma, then in 1948, Delta Sigma Phi

TrojanGirl 06-20-2002 01:09 PM

The first GLO was started in 1962 here...
It was either Kappa Sigma or Sigma Nu (I can't remember) The first Sorority was Pi Beta Phi is 1963!

These are the years the current nationals came on campus at Thiel College:

Fraternities
Sigma Phi Epsilon- 1948
Alpha Chi Rho- 1958
Kappa Sigma- 1996
Delta Sigma Phi- got their charter back this past spring :)

Sororities
Chi Omega- 1950
Sigma Kappa- 1954
Alpha Xi Delta- 1959
Zeta Tau Alpha- 1964

I don't know about the previous nationals that lost their charters... I only have info on the ones currently on campus!

AggieDZ 06-20-2002 01:33 PM

1st fraternity: Sigma Phi Epsilon- begun as local Phi Delta Sigma in 1965, installed as Sig Ep in 1973

1st sorority: Delta Zeta- installed March 1975

All greek organizations began as off-campus org's. Women were not admitted to the University until 1963. Fraternities, as members of IFC were recognized by the University as student social orgs. in 1985. Sororities became recognized in 1990.

The first sororities were ADPi and KD in 1958

West Georgia

Aloha Gamma Delta was chartered April 1971. DDD, Phi Mu, XO, and KD probably were about the same time. AXiD was about 10 years ago.

The Fraternities probaby were chartered around the same time as the sororities, but some of them have been recharted at least once.

AGD was a local sorority first, not sure about the others.:)

ZTAngel 06-20-2002 05:51 PM

I think the oldest fraternity at UCF is either Kappa Sig or SAE. I think their founding dates are 1968. Not 100%.

As for sororities, ZTA was first in 1971. I think Tri-Delta, ADPi, KD, DG, and Pi Phi followed a few years after. AZD was founded in the 80's or early 90's. ChiO colonized in 1998. Theta just recently colonized in the fall of 2000. KKG will be here this fall.

pirate00 06-20-2002 07:30 PM

First fraternity founded at ECU was Phi Sigma Pi in 1929. Mine, Alpha Phi Omega, was second on campus in 1953, then came Kappa Sigma in 1956.

The first sorority was Sigma Sigma Sigma. Not too sure on tne year, though.

33girl 06-20-2002 09:26 PM

The oldest sorority at Clarion is DZ, except when they started they were Theta Sigma Epsilon (I believe) which merged with DZ. Tri-Sigma is 3 years younger and they have been Tri-Sigma the whole time. :)

The oldest fraternity is Sigma Tau Gamma and the oldest continuous fraternity is Theta Chi.

I'm not going to do a lot of homework, but Beta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta was chartered at Ohio University in 1862 and has been continuously active ever since.

I don't believe we were the first at the university, however.

Phi Sig was stated as Beta Xi Omega in 1968 and Phi Sigma Sigma in 1971...

The oldest sororities at my school were Delta Delta Delta and Sigma Sigma Sigma. But Tri-Delt was closed in 1998 or 99. I am not sure which Fraternity was first, but it was probably Sigma Chi or Lambda Chi.

Exrvi 06-25-2002 04:54 PM

For Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA:

W&J was actuallys two seperate colleges (the earliest of which was founded in 1781) that merged in 1865 and went coed in 1972

Fraternities:

Beta Theta Pi 1842 (oldest fraternity chapter in North America in continuous existance)
Phi Gamma Delta 1848 (founding chapter)
Phi Kappa Psi 1852 (founding chapter)
Phi Kappa Sigma 1854
Delta Tau Delta 1861 (oldest Delt chapter in continuous existance - I think)
Phi Delta Theta 1875
Alpha Tau Omega 1882
Zeta Beta Tau 1962

Several of these are hanging on by their fingernails due to lack of members or behavior.

Gone, but not forgotten:

Sigma Chi 1858-1869
Delta Kappa Epsilon 1858-1865
Delta Upsilon 1858-1870
Theta Delta Chi 1858-1872
Sigma Phi Epsilon 1902-1906
Alpha Sigma Phi 1925-1935
Pi Lambda Phi 1948-1985
Lambda Chi Alpha 1919-2000
Kappa Sigma 1898-2001

Sororities:

There was a state wide ban on national organization on the SUNY systems until the late 70s. I do know that many org. was in Buff State in the early 1900s. We have two chapters that are the Sigma chapter (Alpha Sigma Tau) and the Rho chapter (Sigma Tau Gamma). I do believe they were disolved due to the SUNY ruling on national fraternities. The two are active in BUff State again.

As for the oldest contitious fraternity, it's Sigma Phi Epsilon (1979)
Sorority, I believe it's AST, also around the same year. They came after the ban was lifted.

Dianne 06-27-2002 11:16 AM

The first national fraternity to come to my school was SAE in 1881. They are still here, but I don't think it's been a continuous presence.

The first national sorority to come on campus was Chi O, which got here in - I want to say - 1928. They were followed by Tri Delt and Phi Mu in the 1930s. After that, we didn't get any new national sororities until the 1970s, and 2 new chapters in the 1990s.

amycat412 06-27-2002 01:11 PM
