Thong-checking administrator demoted

SAN DIEGO, California (AP) -- A female assistant principal was demoted for lifting girls' skirts to make sure they weren't wearing thongs to a high school dance. Rita Wilson's thong check April 26 in front of male students and adults had enraged parents, one of whom threatened to sue. The Rancho Bernardo High School administrator, who has tenure, will be reassigned to a teaching position, the school board decided Monday. "I'm very disappointed and deeply saddened," Wilson, 47, said as she wiped away tears and hugged supporters. An investigation by the school district concluded Wilson "went far beyond the grounds of propriety" with the underwear inspection. Students said Wilson lifted girls' skirts before they entered the dance, and told those wearing thongs to go home and change. Wilson said she was concerned the combination of revealing clothing and suggestive dancing could lead to sexual assaults.   http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/06/18/tho....ap/index.html |
This is totally crazy!! Where was this woman's mind?!?!
|
Yeah...because we all know that wearing underwear that doesn't show a pantyline under clothes mean people are going to be unable to control sexual urges.
I can see why she was doing a CYA move like that. But its just too far. Thongs CAN be considered sexy, but they also have a function. And no HS administrator has a right to do panty checks. I wonder how many girls she discovered not wearing any panties at all? |
Isn't it amazing how far some people in our education system are willing to go in order to enforce policy issues?
Where the hell does a school get off saying what kind of underwear students can wear?!?! |
Ugh! That is so disgusting! I would never have let one of my high school administrators look under my skirt!! She was concerned about sexual assaults?? It seems to me she was the one doing the assaulting! Who cares what kind of panties the students were wearing! I'd much rather wear a thong under a slinky dress than bunchy granny panties flashing the VPL (visible panty line) That's none of her business. Shouldn't she be more concerned with the proper education of her students more so than their choice of undergarments??? I think she has a freakish panty fetish.
|
EVEN IF there was some stupid policy against girls wearing thongs, which I see no reason why there would be a policy against this, that gives this woman NO RIGHT to lift girls' skirts to check if they were wearing a thong! Wouldn't it be pretty hard to enforce this policy without doing what this woman did?! Absolutely lucicrous!!

What's next? Are they going to lift the girls shirts to make sure they are wearing appropriate bras?
|
I think demotion is too good for her. Quite frankly, if I was a parent at the school, then I wouldn't want her anywhere near my children -- much less teaching them. She should have been fired.
|
She wasn't fired!??!!

If anyone had tried that with me in high school, they would have pulled back a bloody stump where their hand used to be. What kind of pervert does that???
Regarding AOX's comment about bras...I can't cite the exact instance, but I remember a few years ago reading about a high school girls track relay squad that was stripped of a title because one of the girls wore a hot pink jogbra under her uniform tanktop and the straps were showing. The reason given was that it wasn't a sanctioned uniform. |

Thats nothing.
A teacher at a school in my area pulled a gun on a couple of students a couple of weeks ago. The gun turned out to be a starter pistol but the students didn't know that at the time. The school wasn't even going to do anything but the parents and the press made such a big stink that the school finally suspended the guy with pay. I think he should be fired. |

According to the news reports a couple of girls were teasing the teacher after class. He asked them to leave and they didn't so he pulled the gun. |

What is wrong with some people?? I can understand if this teacher was licenesed to carry a gun and ond of his students pulled a gun out on him, but just because two students were teasing him after class and would not leave?! The teacher sounds like he has personal issues, probably about beind ridiculed while a kid or something. Doesn't stuff like this skare you? You never know what idiots are teaching kids now-a-days. |
Considering the way they pay teachers (and the red tape BS they have to put up with) it's amazing ANYONE wants to teach these days.
It's getting to the point where the statement "Those can't do teach" becomes more and more true. |

But back to the article, first off, If I'm the assist. principle and someone asked me to do that...........HECK NO!!!!!!!!!! There is no way I'm checking folks (kids, adults, the elderly, etc.) for the type of underwear that have on!!!! |
As many bad teachers that I had going through the public school system and as many times that I have said, "Those can't do, teach", I still give mad props to those dedicated teachers out there. I have had a handful of teachers who went above and beyond to help me understand what they were teaching or help me prepare for college. These are teachers that I will remember for the rest of my life.
With a salary like a teacher's salary, the people who go into the profession must dedicated. Out of all my friends who are majoring in education, I have never heard one say, "I'm doing it for the money." They'd probably get laughed at. :) They all say that they're doing it because they want to be that person who shapes a kid's life. It's just too bad that horrible teachers such as these overshadow some of those wonderful and dedicated teachers that we have had while growing up. |

Most likely a teacher within a family would contribute to a much higher MHI than many other professions. On top of that, the work hours are much less than many other jobs. Tag that along with a lot of union benefits and a ton of vacation time, and it becomes difficult to justify it as a money matter. The solution isn't higher pay. A lot of this country's problems with education revolve around one of the most, if not the most, powerful unions in America - The UFT. Also marketing for the profession is horrible, with many students automatically assuming teaching should be a fall-back career. And I really think that many people just don't have the patience to deal with people, let alone kids. The thong thing is just bizarre...how would that rule arise? Perhaps they were wearing low pants where the thongs would pop up or something? I have no idea. -Rudey |
I'm not sure if you're at all closely related to anyone in the teaching profession, but my father was one of the best high school math professors in my county and I've met countless people throughout the years who have told me how he had completely changed their lives and their perceptions on life by being a real-world teacher as well as one in the class room. He's retired now and when I considered the possibility of becoming a Calculus professor he told me he would never allow me. Now I'm not certain where you get you're figure, and to be honest I'm not certain what my father made, but believe me life was never an easy ride and as an instructor, a counselor, and a slave to the Kentucky education system $40G a year comes nowhere near to what he deserved in salary.

teacher pay
There is beaucoup teacher - school board/community tension raging at my old high school. The main gripes are the pay scale and the fact that teachers want to pay nothing for their medical benefits. The average teacher salary is around $50,000 and average salary for most people in the district is probably not more than $30,000. Also there are a fair amount of low-income and elderly people in the district.
So if you're looking for sympathy for the "poor teachers" I am probably not the right one to ask. Oh, and I forgot to mention that 2 of the nearby districts are among the poorest/lowest salary ones in Pennsylvania. Nice professional unity, NOT. |

The woman in this article was completely out of line and, like aephi alum said, she should take a position where she has no contact with the students. |
I can't believe what this woman did! I know we hold teachers to a higher standard than the average joe, but for good reason....they are teaching our children, and in some cases are more involved than parents in their lives!

But I know that there are many others that should've left with me...many who were doing this until they could afford grad school. |

(That would be around 250 hours a week of work, at 3 bucks an hour, 50 weeks a year) Teachers get a bad rap, but there are a lot of people making far less with college degrees, with jobs that are equally thankless. Social work pops into mind, even before looking up median salaries . . . It's a tough job, but one that is greatly rewarding to some, and unequivocally important. |
Frankly, how much a teacher makes depends on where they live. Where I'm from, you could start anywhere from $21,000 to $28,000 but the highest you could ever make would be $35,000, and it takes a lot of years teaching before you reach that. Of course, the cost of living here is a little less BUT real estate has been rising while paychecks haven't.
Someone up there said that they had education majoring friends who never said they did it for the money, and it's the same idea for all the ed. majors I know, including myself. Someone else up there also said that they had no sympathy for teachers. Most of us are not looking for sympathy, just understanding. People don't realize what teachers put up with to teach their kids. I mean, their jobs have become quite dangerous in the past few years. |
I agree with some of the statements about how teachers are paid plenty, but disagree with some others. My sister just graduated and is going to be a kindergarten teacher. She's starting out in the mid 20's around $26k i think. that's not bad money. you can't consider only the hours put in at the school, which would be what, about 40 hours a week i guess, because there is work they have to do at home (my girlfriend's mom is also a teacher, and i've seen her working on stuff late plenty) now granted, there are teachers that probably don't do anything outside of school, but most, ESPECIALLY elementary teachers have to do that stuff. Summer teaching is extra pay, so that doesn't count in their "extra hours". i think there are seminars that they have to go to and classes that they don't get paid for though, included in their salary. you can't argue with that much vacation though! they get what 2.5 months in the summer, 2 weeks at christmas, and various days throughout the year. i say this balances out the extra work they have to put in after hours. i think they earn their salary, and a top scale teacher will bring in 40-50k depending on the area. i tell you what though, if you paid me $100k a year, i wouldn't be a teacher. i couldn't handle it!

good lord
i had heard about that and found it hard to believe it was true.
at my school, we've talked about appropriate dress, but thongs are not illegal. we try to encourage them to at least wear underwear. mmcat |
Teacher pay varies from state to state. A lot of ya'll live in states where they are well paid. Here in Oklahoma I believe we're number 48 in the country. I believe starting pay is in the low 20's. And no cost of living is not that much lower here.
|
Yeah, yeah...3 months off in the summer, extra days during the week. Really, though, some teachers (the good ones) go to seminars and workshops during their time off, or they work during the summer. Some teachers, like those that teach band, work all through the summer coming up with what they are going to do during the school year. They also don't always get paid during the summer months when they're on "vacation." You can either be paid for 12 months or 9 months. They have different payment plans. All in all, as I said before, salaries depend on where you live, and there isn't a lot of upward movement in teaching, unless you want to be an administrator. That's where the money is. ;) $26,000 can be a lot of money, but after taxes, all the dental plans and whatnot that they take out of your paycheck it's really not a lot.
AND teachers do start earlier...some show up at 7 or 7:30 in the morning and work til around 4 with about 30 minutes for lunch. Just because they're not teaching during all that time doesn't mean they're sitting around on their asses doing nothing. I also just realized that this thread has taken a big turn...Fire the thong-checking administrator! Haha |
are they doing 40 hours of work during their "time off" that they're doing other stuff? i'll agree, the GOOD teachers put in a lot more work than the minimum, but so does a GOOD fill in the blank i know engineers that work 90 hour weeks. with a work week like that, they're making minimum wage! granted they don't do this all the time, but it's not uncommon to have 60 hour weeks regularly. also, 7-4 is only an 8.5 hour day with the lunch taken out. granted that's more, it's not a huge deal.
like i said before though, i'm not saying teachers don't get what they deserver. there are a lot of teachers though that do little, and want more money/benefits for it. |
Kind of reminds me of when I was in High School and mini-skirts were just coming on the scene. The vice principal used to make the girls get down on their knees, and if the skirt didn't reach the floor, they were sent home to change.
This administrator in question made a very dumb mistake. As for salaries -- my wife taught high school for a number of years, and you couldn't pay me enough to put up with the crap that teachers get in some schools. Not only from the kids, but from the administration. |
Sounds familiar.. at my old HS teachers would hold a dollar bill above the girl's knees and if the skirt was too short they had these atrocious, nasty things they had to wear for the rest of the day (to embarass them and make the behavior undesirable)
|
That woman sounds like a sicko. Either that, or she is over-worked and simply overreacted.
I've always really hated the "those who can't do, teach" comment people use as an insult. Most of the people who say snarky things like that don't have what it takes to be a teacher. My high school teachers ranged from stellar to stupid, but I have to think about what they sacrificed for us that those in other careers don't. While we were preparing for our IB/AP exams, my teachers would devote nights and weekends tutoring us, giving us extra tests, and paying for books and supplies OUT OF THEIR OWN MONEY. During the summer, a lot of the teachers are club/class advisers, teach summer classes, and spend the same 8 hours in the classroom as they do when class is in session. Also, when one factors "median teacher salary", you're usually averaging ALL teachers, whether they're starting fresh out of college or have a Ph.D (as is what some of my math teachers did to make extra money). Is 50K really that good for someone with a doctorate in education? Where I live (which is hardly a poor/innercity area), bachelors' level teachers start out at about 35 a year, which is nothing when you consider the cost of a house. |
