My #1 all-time favorite is Break Your Heart by Barenaked Ladies. The best part is "My heart will be fine/Just stop wasting my time!/I know I'm over you, and I'll be ok/Because I've got what I want/And that's rid of you, goodbye". I just love the way that Steven Page sings that! He really gets into it and gets all emotional. *sigh* Ok, I'll stop gushing now.
"You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morrisette is my other favorite...I watched her Behind the Music last night and was reminded again what a freakin' awesome album Jagged Little Pill is. |
Different View
I guess my breakup songs are not about letting go, but remembering the beauty of the relationship, the passion, the lust. So, I use both "traditional" and "non-traditional" songs to heal. Just commenting, not listing, cuz they are too personal...
|

Actually there are 2 kinds of breakup songs: 1. The person is a jerk and you want to tell them to go screw themselves. 2. You still love the person and you want to wallow. Best screw-you: "Someday" by Mariah Carey Best wallow: "Anything For You" by Miami Sound Machine |
One more...
Godsmack - Alive "It's safe to say You were never alive A big part of you has died And by the way I hope you're satisfied!" TG |

note:
the above is a joke...but it's a funny song |
Dashboard Confessional - "Ender will save us all" or "Hands Down" (note - just don't listen to these guys if you've just broken up)
Sublime - "Chica Mi Tipo" or "Slow Ride" Long Beach Dub Allstars - "Sunny Hours" or "Free Love" Better than Ezra - "Rosalina" the Get-Up Kids - "Michele (with one 'L')" the Pharcyde - "Passing Me By" |
Blessed Union of Souls - Light In Your Eyes Brian McKnight - One Last Cry Boyz II Men - Doin Just Fine 4pm - Suki Yaki Mariah Carey - Love Takes Time Linkin Park - In The End Brandy - Have You Ever Dream - When I Get There Janet Jackson - Again Natalie Cole - Miss You Like Crazy Go West - King of Wishful Thinking Plumb - Lie Low Sheryl Crowe - My Favorite Mistake |
I choose Brian McKnight's Anytime. When that song first came out, I was a junior in high school and I had just broken up with my boyfriend who was in college. I listened to that song a lot because it was exactly the way I was feeling.
Then Brian McKnight had to go ruin the song for me in this interview he did. They asked him if he had written the song to someone and he said something along the lines that he has never felt that way...he's never had a girl break his heart...he just wrote the song for the sake of writing a song. Kinda takes the emotion out of the song when you find out that the artist never really had those feelings. |
sukiyaki and again are two great songs, depressing, but great

i totally forgot about this song..but i've gotta say my favorite part comes right before this quote : "What'd you think that I was gonna do, Curl up and die just because of you? I'm not that weak you know.." ps - how freakin awesome is this song live? *sigh* |
"Don't Think Twice" Bob Dylan
- you just kinda wasted my precious time... but don't think twice... it's alright Also have to vote for almost all of "Dilate" by Ani DiFranco Especially one song that goes... "How could you take almost everything... Then come back for the rest" Singing along is very cathartic because she's practically screaming. |
Angry breakup:
