What did you want to become growing up?

As opposed to what your current occupation is, we all answered that common questionas a child...What do you want to be when you grow up?"

What was your reply?

My responses: A lawyer, A stockbroker (why?) lol

Riley 05-30-2002 09:48 PM

I wanted to do a lot

I stated off being a lawyer, then a nurse then finally a doctor. In between there I wanted to be a dancer or singer ( can't really do either) thus the stage name Riley was born.:D

ClassyLady 05-30-2002 09:48 PM

First, me and my friend were going to go into business together. I was going to be an architect and design the buildings and she was going to be the contractor to build them.

Then, I wanted to work on the road crew holding up the "Slow / Stop" sign. Somebody told me that they make $20 an hour.

Next, me and my friend were going to open up our own beauty shop and "do hurh." Does every little black girl want to do hair at some point?

Now, I don't know what I want to do. But, I'm going to grad school to buy myself a few more years to figure it out.

DeTeRm1NaT1on 05-31-2002 12:07 AM

I wanted to be...

...a teacher. I still want to, but I would like to wait until I do some other things first.

stillwater15 05-31-2002 12:45 AM

initially, i wanted to be a nun. that was my goal for years, but eventually, i changed my mind to wanting to become a minister. still a possibility...

kiml122 05-31-2002 07:55 AM

In the beginning I wanted to be a lawyer, as time went on I and found out that I didn't want to go through all that schooling, I just changed my mind.

What I wish I had become was a Medical examiner or coroner. I really like those Medical detective shows...but again all that going to school. Can you tell that I wasn't into staying in school any longer that I had to.

When I grow up........

When I was about five or six I wanted to be a toll-booth collector, because I thought they got to keep all the money. I was a rude awakening when I found out that it went to the government:(

Then I wanted to be a OB/GYN, until I realized how long medical school took :o ....

Then in high school I wanted to be the female version of puff daddy (Puff Mommy is what I called myself ), just a bit more low key.

Now I am still trying to figure it out, but in the mean time I work in the finance department at a hospital. Who knew!!

thesweetestone 05-31-2002 09:18 AM

I wanted to be a OB/GYN too! I also wanted to be a nurse. The thing is I hate to see blood and am terrified of dead people. I don't even go to funerals.

I don't have a clue of what I want to do/be. So, I'll probably start grad school in the spring!

lovelyivy84 05-31-2002 09:31 AM

I don't remember ever wanting to be anything when I was little. It seemed sort of accepted fact that as long as I made a lot of money it would be ok.

I am VERY happy that I FINALLY figured what I want to do. I found a direction at laaaaast, lol. Granted, it's not a very profitable direction, but I love it, and that is what matters.

SeriousAKA 05-31-2002 10:56 AM

I wanted to be......

an Actress like Tootie
Co-Host of the Today Show like Jane Pauley
an Ultrasologist
a Corporate Art Buyer like Whitley
a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader
a Fashion Designer
an Interior Decorator

and I'm still searching!!!

AKA2D '91 05-31-2002 11:14 AM

I asked my 10-year old niece what she wanted to do. She innocently replied...a Beauticious. We laughed our butts off.

She was serious, even though we corrected her (beautician). My sister told her, yeah, with 4 years of college and 2 additional years of school, she could become a Beautic(ious)ean. LMAO

FeeFee 05-31-2002 11:21 AM

When I was in junior high school, I wanted to become a teacher. Then when it was time for me to choose colleges, I chose those that offered accounting degrees. I wound up with a degree in International Marketing instead. I now work in the legal field. I also returned to school because now I want to work within the social sciences area (perhaps a MSW).

So, in short, I still don't know what the hell I want to be when I grow up!!! I'm hoping that graduate school will buy me some extra time as well! :o

Steeltrap 05-31-2002 11:28 AM

Very early on, I wanted to be a housewife. I was watching too much TV back in the day. :p
As I got older, I wanted to be a sportswriter. In fact, reading about controversial Reggie Jackson led me into journalism.
I didn't expect to be a business journalist, but glad that I am one today.
:D

nikki25 05-31-2002 11:30 AM

Between the ages of 4 and 17......

I wanted to be like Claire Huxtable and become a lawyer

I wanted to be one of the Miss Americas like Debbye Turner

I wanted to be a police officer...because I thought that they were all nice people who didn't get hurt :(

I wanted to be a college professor because my dad and I thought that I didn't have the temperment of a secondary school teacher

I wanted to be a medical doctor because I wanted to help people

And I wanted to own my own hair salon on the side of the lawyer gig so that I could make a lil' extra CHANGE (think: Cedric the Entertainer in Orig. Kings) on the side.

Little32 05-31-2002 11:48 AM

Let's begin at the beginning...

First I wanted to be a palentologist (sp). Then I started to think that by the time I finished school, all of the dinosaur bones would be dug (is that a word) up, so I let that go.

Then, astronaut but then there was that whole thing with the challenger. :(

Then, lawyer--that would be the familial influence.

Publishing--always loved to read, so I figured this would be the perfect occupation.

Finally, teaching--decided I wanted to try an do something meaningful with my life.

Right now--I don't know. I am going to get a degree and then we will see what happens.

gamma_girl52 05-31-2002 01:48 PM

Always...

I always wanted to be a teacher. My mother tells me that when I was smaller, all I wanted to play was "school". When my sister came around I'd just force her to take these made up tests for her and everything :D It was sick!

I still want to teach, but it's High School now...I'm an English major so I'll probably become the same English teacher you hated when you were in school...:D

I was just reminding my sister yesterday that when she was little, how she wanted to be in the educational field as well...as a bus driver though :p She never wants to be reminded of that!!

Someone helping homeless people, abused children, and battered women, (I've helped so many)

at the age of 10 I wanted to be Someone to make all the women wake up and understand that women were not meant to cater to men hand and foot. (and my aunt always said, keep dreaming that ain't gonna happen:mad:) and look at us now, women have EVOLVED TO CAREER MINDED PEOPLE, who no longer chase men, or feel we need to (I have empowered many to choose their own paths)
Man, had i listened to my aunt, i'd probably be just how she was.

But none the less, psychology was my major, so I think i am on the right path.

prayerfull 05-31-2002 02:28 PM

Y'all are killing me with your "Fly Girl" aspirations. LMAO.

I wanted to be a pediatrician...until I hit DC and Howard U...and then I wanted to be a lobbyist..like Wade Henderson and work for the Washington Bureau of the NAACP. In all seriousness, that's still my true career goal...but here in little Monterey, CA that's not much of a career option. Hopefully, I'll be able to work my way into the political arena at some point in my life.

LOL I wanted to be a computer programmer too. I was crazy to say the least. You have to be a certain kind of person to enjoy computer programming and I am not that person! :D BTW RAM=Random Access Memory

When I was younger I wanted to be:

-A beautician (I still want to learn how to do hair and nails but not do it professionally. Just hook up my family and friends.)

-A doctor

-A lawyer

I am still thinking about the lawyer thing so I can combine my computer skills and knowledge with that and become a tech lawyer for companies like Napster and Morpheus.

candygirl 05-31-2002 11:01 PM

Early on I wanted to be a nurse.

Then I wanted to be a pediatrician. As someone else stated, I realized that I would be in school forever so I let that one go.

Before entering college I wanted to be a psychiatrist or psychologist. Infact my major was psychology upon entering undergrad.

Well now my major is Family and Child Studies and I have no idea what I'll do with the degree so I'm going to grad school as well to buy myself some time and maybe get a clearer vision.

skeeliteful 06-01-2002 09:39 AM

When I was little, I wanted to be an OB/GYN...that's how much i loved the Cosby Show

Then, as I got into high school the thought of physical therapy came to mind.

College...nursing was my thing until Organic Chemistry whipped my butt

Somehow, I switched majors from nursing to, speech pathology, to english, and FINALLY Communications and STILL graduated in 4 years...

But when it's all said and done...I really want to be a greeter at Super Walmart:D

lil_sunshine 06-01-2002 02:27 PM

As a child, I've wanted to be.....

1. Doctor
2. Nurse
3. Pediatric nurse
4. Registered nurse working in the nursery
5. Recreational therapist (sports medicine)
6. Occupational therapist
7. Corporate lawyer
8. Entertainment lawyer
9. Entertainment lawyer w/ some knowledge of corporate law (my current decision b/c I heard that with the entertainment law field, there's more hype than jobs and I need something to fall back on :D ;) )

tammy- 06-01-2002 07:41 PM

Skater_de_WMU 06-02-2002 01:23 AM

In my elementary years I went through the regular jobs:
Teacher
Singer/Dancer
Police Officer
Dispatcher for the stork that drops the babies off at the houses :) -I wanted to tell him which house to drop the babies off at (I actually was one of the few naive children who believed that story for a min)

Somehow in 6th grade I went far and beyond the dispatcher job to something even more rare - A professional figure skater.
I chased that dream for 8 years and now am pursuing becoming one of the first/youngest African American figure skating Gold Judges. I still skated with the team up at my school Western Michigan Univ. but becoming professional is far-fetched.

As far as real jobs are concerned, I want to work for the music industry with helping to develop and recruit up and coming talent as well as producing albums. At 18yrs of age, i still have at least 3 years of college to change this.

AKAtude 06-02-2002 10:54 AM

I always wanted to be a veterinarian (my first choice), but I just couldn't get with science no matter how hard I tried.:( When I got to college, I majored in my second choice while taking some science classes that I needed anyway. That's when I found out I did a good thing by not being a pre-veterinary major.:o

My second choice was to become a journalist. That's what I have my degree in, but I don't use it. I ended up in healthcare.

My third choice was teaching. My senior year in high school, I enrolled in the Teacher Cadet program to get a feel for the profession.

When I was little, I told my Dad I wanted to grow up and be a wife and mother.... and a cpa (he was happy when I said cpa!)

Hi GC Peeps!!!!

***back at work from maternity leave****

When I was little I wanted to be:

1. An airline stewardess - Until I find out that planes crash and burn.

2. An Artist - I can draw really well, but my mother told me artists make NO money and I would turn out homeless. (she's harsh)

3. A model - I went to modeling school and did a few local shows but no "super model" stuff.

4. A veterinarian - like everyone else I realized I would be in school for eva and said forget it!

5. Go into finanacial services like my Mom which is were I am today.

Rain Man 06-04-2002 09:33 AM

Let's see....

1. Game Show Host (of course)--as a kid I redesigned the basement to make it look like the set of Password Plus...

http://www.geocities.com/jay_anton/pplogo.JPG
http://www.geocities.com/jay_anton/ppcontestants.JPG

and I would pretend to be Allen Ludden *RIP*(Betty White's then husband)...

http://www.geocities.com/jay_anton/ppludden.JPG

and would have stuffed animals be the contestants & celebrities.
http://www.geocities.com/jay_anton/pppuzzle.JPG

http://www.geocities.com/jay_anton/ppanswer.JPG
In addition, at school I would host games like Blockbusters and Card Sharks with my classmates.

2. Lawyer--Dan Fielding from Night Court made it look so easy

3. Airplane pilot--that's what I originally went to college for.

4. Architect (though I didn't know it by name), because as a kid I spent my spare time drawing houses in my neighborhood in precise detail block by block within a 1 square mile area. Also because I would design houses made from popsicle sticks at the neighborhood rec center.

5. Teacher--my 5th grade teacher made the job look so easy and also b/c we kids were never bad, just mischievious :D Needless to say, as I got older, that ambition didn't last long.

6. Grocery store checker--well, with the advent of self check-out, that job is soon to be obsolete.

7. Actor - I have a very natural knack for acting and drama--five years performing in various plays can't be wrong
