What do you think is wrong with BP?
 

Hello, How is everyone?

My company is currently developing a web community named UrbanSpotlight.net. which will go beyond regular web communities such as BlackPlanet with actual community events, a section on the site to promote community helpfulness and many other positives along with the standard web community features but with different presentations of each.
Since this idea grew for me, in part, as an outgrowth of my frustration with BP and its services along with other web communities, I would like to know what you all think makes BP and anything Web community good and bad and what you would like to see as a user of those communities?

The freaky-ness is the worst.
Anytime you give the smallest opportunity for people to get "sexy" or "sensual" they go overboard. That's why I no longer chat on BP.

The Heritage & Culture Forum used to be good one time because there was interesting discussion.

A Chance for intellectual discussion and community networking is always appreciated.

I joined bp in march 2000. At this time, I really felt that it was a sight in which I could meet and newtork with black people within the diaspora. I've stopped using bp lately because, they have changed to be a "hook up" site. I' also know of some negative experiences, wherein ppl have been exploited, and harassed by other bp members. Pictures of sisters from the Atlanta University Center were posted on to a fake members page aand captions were included underneath each pic, with descriptions of sexual acts that the sisters had, or are willing to perform. The page has been removed, and some of the ppl pressed charges once the real bp member was found out.
Recently, I recieved a note from someone who I had never met, or chatted with, that was extremely insulting and uncalled for. When I reported this note and member to the bp authorities, they replied by telling me how to block ppl from send me messages....I'd prefer to stop using bp all together.

in addition to this:

we have notes from BP Special Promos & BP Gifts & BP Dating that you can't opt-out of...I received mail in my personal e-mail about signing up for that ding dang BP Dating, again with no way to opt-out. Basically, I'm ticked with all this extra stuff that they're shoving in our faces, trying to get people to pay for it because BP grew so quickly (almost 6 million members in 5 years) so fast and they're trying to pay for it all.

1. The Chat Feature -- WITH can read that mess that fast?

2. BP's insistence that all Black folks on BP hook up. :rolleyes:

3. When I log in, there is always a "commercial" to say no thanks to. One day it took me dang near 20 commercials just to get to BP.

4. The BP Opinion Polls -- either they were dumb azz questions or they stayed up for more than one day.

5. The BP trivia game -- there were 2 times that all the choices were WRONG. WTF?!?!!?:confused: :mad:

6. The BP Member of the Week -- Why should I be penalized for voting for someone to be member of the week by losing points?:confused: :rolleyes: That is why Black folks don't vote now?

*BP's jobs -- don't work for them they might start off by paying you and THEN one day decide to pay you with those "prizes" for points items. :mad: :p :rolleyes:

I joined BP last year and I have truely met some weirdos!!! I agree the name should be changed to the "hook up". The pager is slow and the new notes light comes on telling you have notes when there isn't any.:rolleyes: Some of the pages look like they came off a porn site Hot Mess. There's always some guy trying to holla at ya like you in the club.:rolleyes: I hardly ever visit BP anymore. The site is a total disappointment to me. I thought it was a place to network and maybe find a good connection to move around in the job market.

darn near everything is wrong w/bp. my biggest gripe is that i have to fight off advertisements before i can actually check out the site. there's one particular ad, that doesn't have the no thanks button. so, i have to revisit bp like 5 times, before i can work my way around that ad.

the forums suck. for the most part, there are ignorant questions, followed by ignorant answers.

it lets me block receiving notes from other people, but not from bp. i'm not interested in bp-dating, bp-promotions or bp-anything else. you're blocked for a reason. stop sending me notes.

I don't like how BP claims pornographic material is not allowed, but I've seen a few pages where very "private" body parts were showing and there were pictures of sexual acts. I've had one guy who sent me a pic, which had him holding his "pee pee" in his hand. I was outraged.

I think there needs to be a way they check the pages frequently, to make sure they are not offensive. Everyone is not on BP to hook up, and find sex partners.

ALSO, all those stupid promos are irritating. If you log in, you have to go through the promos, which takes a while to get out of. And, have anyone noticed that the "No Thanks" icon is so small, and hidden, it takes you another 15 minutes to find it.

I haven't been on BP in a very long time because of these problems.

Don't forget how slow bp is overall!!! Takes forever, and if someone has a lot going on on their page, forget it...

BP is AD CENTRAL!!! All them damn ads just to log on. Pop up screens and whatnot. It got too commercialized.

Its slow to log on to.

BP-Dating is a rip off! If anyone ever uses that your a fool.

Everything on Bp just got ridiculous.

I don't like the fact that I have to say "No Thanks" each time that I sign in...but AOL does that as well...

I don't like that I can never pick up the pages that I receive. They keep telling me that they are fixing it...well..its been 2 years...and nada!

I think its a nice concept...but they have toooo much happening...and often there is more info on people than I care to know of or see...have some discretion please!

Okay, that's it for the complaints...

I do like that one can communicate and access old friends and make some new connections...I have made acquaintances as well...of course they wind up knowing someone that I know...there are truly 6 degrees of separation!

I hate when you lok in the BP Dating thing comes up and makes you go through all them pictures saying no thanks but wont let you log in until you say you are interested in someone.

I hate receiving notes from people who are promoting there underground records

I hate when people send me nasty pictures, like I want to see that

I hated when the pager didn't work

I hate the fact that the trivia challenge isn't pdate when it should be

Too many advertisements

Chat forums are to slow to log into and then the words go by to fast.

Broke Planet is a mess! IT IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY! Meaning, whoever tries to hook up on BP or whatever...get lives LOSERS!

I think there are too many pop-up thingies and the server is often too busy. BP has a lot of good features, including editorials and open forums.
However, the majority of people only want to hook up with women with usernames like: thikwetnjuicy and send you notes: "sup ma, you lookin sexy, i'm trynna see wassup witchu...holla!"

Ugghhhhh...LOSER-FREE ZONE!!!

Anyway, I don't like how the forum message boards are set up. I can't explain it well, but it's nearly impossible to read previous messages on longer threads without clicking the back button ### of times. I'd be better if the forums were set up like Greekchat's--where you can just click to a page number to read previous posts.

True, the view range of the message threads is so narrow. They should have an option where the view can be expanded to a half page or something. But, I do enjoy some of the discussions.

LOL!A male friend of mine constantly uses BP as a dating resource. He has the nerve to be frustrated when his dating conquests don't turn out positive. I keep trying to tell him that he is on BUSDOWN PLANET!

why has bp frozen my guestbook?? they say that "due to the high demand for guestbook" (aint it a dayum feature?!!) that all posts over 100 will be unviewable and uneditable ( i don't know if those are real words) until i register for mysurvey.com. at that time, my gb will be available for 1 week. then after taking one of the surveys, it will be fully accessible and i get 250 bonus points! this don't make no sense at all!!! (them fools got me using my bad grammar!) i'm so pissed...

and since i'm complaining...why can't i get a blinking light for email like i do for notes. and, the profanity filter is TOO high. i was trying to type my favorite authors, one of which is eric jerome dickey. why does it show on my page as "eric jerom *bleep*ey" what kind of mess is that??!!

CTFU yesterday I went to your GB and when it told me that mess I thought BOOOOOOOOOOO. Yes the filter is too high for sure for profanity but yet it lets people use stuff like CL*T. :rolleyes: :confused:

I'm so glad I never did sign up on the website. I just don't like that kind of stuff and listening to some of the prior posts I'm glad I didn't:rolleyes:

I think BP has a way of degrading the representation of our people. As far as I've noticed all the sign on informercials are dealing with debt consolidation, credit cards, minority magazines, and jobs. What is this saying are the key things on our minds?

1-Too many trash pictures
2-The BP dating crap, what the heck is all that about-it the site a place to hook up now.
3-No way to get in contact when you see a friend on unless you go into a chatroom
4-Chatrooms, not a big fan of them. And the private/personal ones on BP cut off like every 10 minutes even if the two of you are still in it.
5-The over all sight it's so dark and gloomy, can we get some color something a little brighter. Not all black people like to hide out in the dark corners.

5 better things of BP
1-Meet new people, some who are actually interesting
2-Free spot to represent yourself on the net with a chance to be seen
3-Ability to network worldwide
4-The interviews of celebrities, questions that people get to ask and have responded too.
5-That you can see how long your friend has been logged on (sad I couldn't find anything better than that huh).
