Lil Sis gifts

Do any of you angels have any good ideas for Little Sister gifts? We give them baskets full of gifts, decorated bulletin boards, their first set of letters, lavaliers, everything that has letters on it, decorated photo albums, tons of candy, their little sister arrows. Oh, you know what would be cute? Giving her the lavalier by tying it around the neck of an angel doll...hmm. Thanks for the help, girls!

erniegurl00 05-24-2002 12:16 AM

I tried to be as creative as I could be when I made my Lil Sis gifts. My favorite thing was wine and silver blue M&Ms I found at a local candy shop. You could them in just about anything. I also made a pillow and a flower vase. I went to Hobby Lobby and found some rub on angel decals and applied them to the vase. Another idea is to start a family lavalier. I think my family is the only one that has this, and I know I felt really special when I was the only new initiate with one! If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

PPL,
Erin

ROWDYsister 05-24-2002 12:40 AM

Great ideas, thanks a bunch! But I don't know if I could pass on my lavalier. It's such a cute idea but I don't know if I could part with it...it's all I wanted when I was pledging! On the other hand, it would be so so special for it to be passed on through the generations...food for thought.

ROWDYsister 05-24-2002 12:49 AM

wow!

What lucky little sisters you have! I can't wait to be a big!

ps: you made the afghan? that is absolutely amazing! i'm very impressed!

jharb 05-24-2002 01:01 AM

I can't wait to have a little sis! The favorite thing that my big gave me was a plastic Tyrannasaurus Rex! It's funny but she and I met in a biology class on Dinosaurs and Kristen was also my first exposure to Pi Phi! We've decided to make the dino one of our traditions because it brought us together. Are there any family traditions? In my family (the turtle family) we get a rubber turtle similar to a rubber ducky. It's neat that my g-ma and big sis in the house both have these! Another good idea is lots of cute baby stuff decorated with letters and "Little Sis". My favorite was a baby bottle filled with wine and blue M&Ms! I hope these helped!

PPL,
Jess

Star Turtle 05-24-2002 01:02 AM

martha stewart here

yea, i made the afghan, i am making one for my big sis (it's not pink and green ~ i hear the gasps of shock!) that matches her room, and i have the yarn bought for my new lil sis's afghan. Hopefully they will both be done by the start of fall semester. I can't tell you how many times Jessica (first lil sis) has been threatened that if she brings her blanket to a rush party, she won't have it to take home! everyone wants one - i'll be busy forever.

so i crochet, i scrapbook, i sew, i do bead work, i've tried my hand at working with wood, i kill plants (no green thumb) and i have an ENORMOUS amout of useless knowledge at my disposal.

somewhere in there i found time to be in a sorority, be on exec. board, join the debate team, be a part of student government, hold down a job, and sleep - i'm crazy!

Star Turtle 05-24-2002 01:05 AM

oooooppppppsssssss

i just realized i intruded into your forum!

please accept my apologies, but when it comes to being a big sis - i just have to share - i did leave out my fav gift (to both girls)

it was something I called "A DZ's Book of Time" it was full of tickets like - a night at the movies, one lunch off of campus, one crazy night out, one day just for you,

basically an excuse to hang out with each of them for special time

once again - sorry i intruded - and enjoy being a big sis!

jharb 05-24-2002 01:09 AM

To a fellow Jessica don't worry about it! It's neat to get ideas from other people no matter what GLO about Little Sis Gifts! I really like the idea of the book of time! Do you mind if I "steal" your idea when I get a little? :p

I love being crafty...I couldn't live without markers, paint, glue, etc. My little is going to have so much stuff that is decorated with Pi Phi and little sis! :D

PPL,
Jess

Star Turtle 05-24-2002 01:13 AM

please do!

Please - i have to say it's the one present (other than the afghans) that everyone loved! besides it's great to show you were thinking about her before you knew how cool she'd be

FYI: My big is a Jessica
I am a Jessica
My first lil is a Jessica

Quite cool to line our paddles up and look!

I think lil Jessica is out scouring our campus for a jessica to join in order to keep the tradition - lol - my other lil is Patricia (cool as heck!)

That's so funny! Jessicas rule the greek world! :D

ROWDYsister 05-24-2002 01:42 AM

Yeah, Star Turtle Jessica, thanks so much for your great ideas, really. Lil Sis gifts are basically the same (except for symbols and stuff) from one house to the other. So don't feel bad about "intruding." The point of Greek chat is talk to other Greeks and help each other out...

btw, the Jessica paddles sound hilarious! That's awesome!

Star Turtle 05-24-2002 03:13 AM

paddles pic

okay - once i start scanning, i can't quit.

http://jetnica.tripod.com/test.html

the first two are scrapbook pictures - ignore

the second two are of the paddles

the one i gave to my big sis has all the paddle tramps stuff on it
the dz, the hearts, and the spring 2001 are all sparkly - we both love stars and sparly gllittery stuff

the next pic is both of my paddles, from jessica and patricia - i'm the only girl in my chapter to have two little sis's and niether one of my paddles have any type of raised letters!

anyway - enjoy!

erniegurl00 05-24-2002 11:15 AM

First off, you're always welcome here Star Turtle! It's nice to meet new people! :)

Secondly, you all have really cute ideas! ROWDY, when I said get a family lavalier I meant you would buy an extra one so you could keep one. :) Everyone in my house has the standard lettered one, but my family one is a larger, circular one with the letters engraved on it. Just an idea. :)

Thirdly, Jess we have some family traditions. I think almost every family in our house has traditions! We're really into that. :) I know our first one is that the new family member has to have her picture taken with a pacifier in her mouth (and it has to be a Pooh one since that's the main branch of the family.) I know we'll have a lot more traditions to start up next fall because our small family has merged with another. Sooo...(and get this) I am now in the Pooh/Bunny/Barbie family. It cracks me up! :D BTW, I am currently working on a latch-hook Pooh rug (with Pi Phi letters on his shirt) to pass down in the family.

PPL,
Erin

Dionysus 05-24-2002 11:22 AM

Egad, sorry to intrude, but since you all are on the topic.....

I have a question, do you all buy your lil sis' gifts from your own pocket?

erniegurl00 05-24-2002 12:36 PM

You're not intruding Dionysus. But yes, at our chapter we do pay for everything out of our own pocket. It can get quite expensive, especially since Big's have to buy letters for their Lil's. That's why I tried to make as many things as possible! :)

Wow! I feel sorry for the bigs that have more than one little......

Star Turtle 05-24-2002 02:18 PM

same here!

my chapter pays for EVERYTHING out of our pocket - everyrush shirt, every dinner, everything - we don't have a house or anything, but neither does any other org. on campus

that's why the list is so drastically short on my second lil's stuff - i always knew i'd have 2 lil's - i just thought i'd get a year between them (like take a girl from 2 fall classes) but then when this semester's girls came, i just knew patricia was going to be my lil - she knows what's up - and she knows she has stuff coming to her.

the funny thing is now that it's my last year, i'm getting ready for senior farewells and everything, i'm noticing that anything i have 2 of - is getting put into my "twins" list - these two girls are spoiled!

but all in all - i wouldn't change anything~!

Ginger 05-24-2002 03:09 PM

All the things you girls gave your littles!

My chapter was never huge on gift-giving, so now that I'm an alum, I think I'm going to spoil myself and give myself some of those things as presents!

I was always jealous of you DZs when I'd look for stuff in our greek store... I love turtles! I wondered on occasion how bad it would be just to replace that Z with an O.... just kidding :)

Star Turtle 05-24-2002 03:46 PM

no presents!

you're chapter is not big on presents!

oh dear!

in my chapter - a typical pledging semester is as follows
big sis week - small gift everyday with a clue about the big
big sis night - poem/candle
initation week - small gift everyday from rosebuddy with clue
initation night - presents from rosebuddy, basket of stuff from big sis, and the lil's always get thier big a basket of new stuff too!

i love presents!

for my birthday (like a week before lil jess was initiated, she gave me something early - a pet turtle!) he's cool too

erniegurl00 05-24-2002 05:10 PM

Every chapter approaches Lil gifts differently. I know IN Gamma spoils their Lil's. New members not only receive these gifts but GA (Guardian Angel for the non Pi Phi chatters...they get a gift a week) gifts as well. As VP Social (aka Pledge Educator) I spent a lot of time talking with our graduate consultant, and she told me how other Pi Phi chapters do it. She told me to consider cutting back the gifts our new members receive. Other chapters have mandatory things the girls will receive and that's it! I thought about it for our chapter and quickly dismissed it. (So yes Jess, you don't have to worry about that! You can spoil your Lil all you want. :)) I know our chapter is way too into traditions and gift giving. :)

PPL,
Erin

PS. Wish me luck girls! I'm leaving tomorrow for IL, which is a 4+ hour drive for me! I'm kinda nervous but excited for the independence. Have a great Memorial Day weekend everyone!

ROWDYsister 05-24-2002 05:39 PM

Yeah, money flies out of my hands when it comes to buying lil sis gifts...like today for example! I came home from the mall with lots of bags and no cash and realized that everything I bought was for my sisters...my future little, sisters' b-days, and my big's b-day. I love the excessive gift-giving. We have a table in the front hall where everyone leaves their gifts for people for every occasion. For Easter, everyone commented on the giant pink inflatable bunny I left for my big!!

ROWDYsister 05-24-2002 05:40 PM

And good luck, Erin!!

Good Luck Erin and have an INCREDIBLE trip! :D

PPL,

Jess

P.S. I can't wait to spoil my little like Kristen has spoiled me!

EagleChick19 07-08-2002 09:02 AM

Sorry that I'm intruding on your board, but I am going to be a big sis in the fall...I was reading all of the stuff that you guys have been doing with your littles...Some of the ideas that you guys came up with was really cool...I might have to steal them!!! Thanks again for letting me crash your board..

ROWDYsister 07-15-2002 11:08 PM

Do any of you make family trees to give your littles? And should I hold off and make one for my little or grandlittle?

EagleChick19 07-16-2002 12:09 AM

I don't...

All the girls in my house get family trees from their big sis at some point. It's really neat getting to see who is in your family! :) I would hold off because what if you get two littles or something like that?

PPL,
Jess

Star Turtle 07-16-2002 10:15 AM

wow!

you girls give family trees?

how cool is that! how far back do they go? -- i've wanted to do something like this for my tree since i found out how complicated it really is, but i don't know how to go about that one.

that's awesome that your littles get such an amazing piece of history like that!

(the dz who has too much to say about lil's!)

EagleChick19 07-16-2002 10:45 AM

In my chapter of AST, NMs get family trees early on....

jharb 07-16-2002 12:07 PM

Mine went back to my great-great grand sis. I think that might have been when they started doing families in my chapter. I'm not quite sure though! Maybe erniegurl00 could give a better answer! :)

PPL,
Jess

CarolinaDG 07-16-2002 11:49 PM

Hey... A Delta Gamma here... sorry to bust in, but one of your Pi Beta Phi's came to our board and said y'all had a big/lil board going...I'll tell you what all we do, and what I need help with...

Every day we do tons of candy, picture frames, cups, and one small thing other than the basic thing that we do the same... here are the basic things for every day:
Day 1: Clipboard
Day 2: Bulliten Board
Day 3: Trash Can filled with anything we can find (my big filled mine with candy... I think my mom and I had to throw most of it away... that's a LOT of candy!)
Day 4:Tailgate theme-A tailgating chair and cooler (I don't know what tailgating's like at y'alls school's, but here it's HUGE... from football games to Carolina Cup to just a day at the rocks... we always are in need of a cooler and tailgating chair)

My problem is, however, I've run out of cute sayings to put on things... I mean, I don't want to be tooo cheesy, and I want to be original... I figured y'all could help since not only are you from a different school (we don't have Pi Beta Phi's) but also an entirely different sorority! PLEASE help!

Star Turtle 07-17-2002 09:52 AM

hey carolinadg

i'm a dz who's busted in on this board a few times - one of the best things i've seen is people's signatures on greek chat - that's where i've seen some of the best greek-related sayings. and in t-shirt order books/webpages, you'll find some good sayings too!

erniegurl00 07-17-2002 11:28 PM

Jess,

Families have been going on for quite some time I do believe. It's pretty much an unspoken tradition that the Big Sis gives some sort of family tree either during revealing or soon afterwards.

My family tree stems back waaayyy back. The oldest sister in my tree is 9 generations back!!

Eek, not big on gift giving? My SAI chapter goes crazy with it! LOL It's soooo much fun to spoil your lil rotten.

breathesgelatin 01-02-2004 03:53 PM

I had two little sisters the same year, so I had to really watch my budget. In our chapter, the first 5 weeks of pledgeship each new member receives a "Beta Buddy" that takes them out to eat and gives them a gift that is purchased by the sorority. Everyone gets the same gift each week. Then Big Sister week comes along. In my chapter each Big Sis gets the same gift one day of the week (one day is flowers, one is candy/food, one is decorations, etc.) For Big Sister Week, I:
  • decorated their rooms with balloons, confetti and streamers--this is a very low budget thing, b/c all items can be purchased at the dollar store
  • got a nice flower arrangement with wine carnations
  • made breakfast in bed--I got cheap plastic plates, cups and bowls in wine and blue and got paint pens and decorated them with angels, arrows, letters, etc. Then I got little boxes of cereal, milk, and juice and put them with the plates outside their doors in the morning. I did the same thing for a huge bucket of candy
  • one day we give collages with hints with who we might be! That same day I gave a bunch of cute knick-knacks I had picked up from a Greek store--cups, pins, stickers etc.
  • the last day we traditionally give pajamas to wear to revelation... I forget if I gave anything else that day!

For Initiation, I:
  • wrote meaningful letters to both of them
  • gave them lavalieres
  • took them to a nice dinner with the rest of the family
  • my "aunt" (it's complicated :)) gave them a turtle--our family mascot

One thing I have been wanting to do is make a family album or tree. One family in our chapter has an album that goes all the way back to colonization with pictures and whatnot. I have traced our family back to 1994 or so (we were colonized in '92) but I can't seem to get any farther. But I think I might make a decorative tree for my little-littles in a few months. :)

aimers1525 01-08-2004 08:11 PM

Hi ALL-
I am new to the board--a member of WI Delta-Marquette University, MIlwaukee, WI! I just wanted to offer some advice about little sisters because I absolutely adore my big and lil so I went crazy for my lil's initiation! Some of the most important things that my big sis passed down to and suggested to me to give were:
-our family has a tradition to give diagonal lavalieres
-tote bags (which are really helpful!)
-a hatbox that I painted and put "Pi Phi Memories" on top so she could put in her cards from initiation and other piphi stuff she collects over the years)
-a build-a-bear (they have little angel wings you can get--so cute)
-family letters that have been passed down for ever!
-a picture of our family (pictures of the two of you are good because she might not necessarily have pictures from pleding and i-week!)

Those are just some suggestions:)
Good Luck to all the chapters who have formal recruitment this Spring...including my own:) but I will be abroad for the semester :(
-Amy

piphiarrow234 01-09-2004 02:55 AM

i got my first Lil!!! this semester.. and a really cute gift in my family its a family tradition for us, we give Goldfish during big sis week its really cheep and its a friend for life (well as long as he lives :) i loved my fishy :) and my lil loved hers!@!
another relaly cute gift we do is scrapbooks, we get regular Binders and get padding and really pretty fabric, and cover the binder and get those wooden letters you put on a Paddle/arrow, and put letters on it, nad u have a scrap book. and its way fun to scrap book :)

Bumping this thread.

Anyway, one of the earlier posts mentioning passing down a lavalier. I love my lavalier. That was the first thing I bought. I also couldn't imagine passing it down to my little sister (even though I love her to death).
What about buying another lavalier and giving that to your little with the intention of her passing it down to her little?

Txsurfinwaves 02-05-2004 04:38 PM

My lavalier was passed down from my big, who got it from her big...and is actually from my great-great-gran big. It has been passed down in my family for a long time..however, i had a james avery angel necklace that i never take off( I put it on after my friend mike died)...and i attached my letters to that, so I think im going to have to buy a new one for my lil cause i can't seem to get my letters off( it kept falling off so i had to weld it pretty well to the chain.... )
