Another Feud: Chris Vs. Chris- You be the judge...

CHRIS VS. CHRIS: Comedians fighting over where the black prez idea began.

Chris Tucker
(May. 21, 2002) *People in the industry swear they're the best friends in the world, but when it comes to success, all is fair. Take, for example, comedians Chris Tucker and Chris Rock.
The duo is reportedly bickering about the origin of a movie about a black president. Tucker has been talking about the project, “Mr. President,” since 1999. But, as we reported in yesterday's EUR, Rock is about to begin shooting his own black prez film, titled “Head of State.”

Reportedly relations between Rock & Tucker have been strained since this year's Oscars. Reports say the two funny guys have supposedly passed on events where the other would be.

However, Leslie Sloan, Rock's publicist, says the two aren't beefing and goes on to say the idea of a black prez is not exactly an exclusive idea.

"The studios have been trying for years to get guys like Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy to play a black president. Chris Tucker's idea is not original."

QUESTION

Why does a movie about a black president have to be a comedy??

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! on America!

kitten03 05-24-2002 09:22 AM

Why cant they be a black president and vice president? Egos & Testosterone dont mix

nikki25 05-24-2002 10:36 AM

I'm in favor of a Christ Tucker movie about a Black president. I enjoy his humor greatly...and when he talks about President Clinton...the hilarity of it will make you fall out of your chair!

I like Chris Rock's comedy as well...but I love Chris Tucker's comedy. Chris Tucker is cute and he's FUNNY...and I know that it will come off good (and not some Pooty Tang mess  ).

And you know this MAN!

strobelitehoney 05-29-2002 01:08 PM

I'm sorry but chris rock is just drier than a bottle of gin.

and his movie would not be ALL THAT FUNNY. I have to give it to chris tucker on this one.

Chris Rock just seems to try to play by HOLLYWOODS rules to me.
He reminds me of a BLACK JEFFERY GODFREE (sp) He just isn't all that funny to me, except for some things.

Now Chris tucker..., he WOULD make the white house black.

Just Passing Through...

I agree with the person who previously asked why a movie about a black president had to be a comedy. There are plenty of black actors who would make wonderful presidents Samuel L Jackson, Denzel, Mario Van Peebles, Morgan Freeman, etc.

Of the two Chris' I certainly would not pick Chris Rock. My personal opinion is not favorable under any circumstances to Rock. However, Chris Tucker is more sensitive to the media and has leadership capabilities for the role of a black president. It would be interesting to see him play a serious role.

Sugar_N_Spice 05-30-2002 07:01 PM

Thumbs Up For Chris Tucker!

I think Chris Rock is funny at times, but sometimes he tries too hard to be funny and uses the same jokes (Liek what i was told about "Pooty Tang"). Chris Tucker is my boy! He's naturally funny, no matter what he's doing. But I agree with prior comments, that they shouldn't be fueding over who thought up the idea for such and such movie, esp. if it isn't copywritten (not to mention I could have thought of that idea)...

Actually, Morgan Freeman played the president of the US in Deep Impact with Tea Leoni. Granted, it was more of a supporting role, but he did a hell of a job and I was glad to see that they cast him as the president in a mainstream movie.

Anyway, back to Chris & Chris, I think Tucker is definitely more funny than Rock. It seems to me that Chris Rock was funnier before he gained crossover success while Chris Tucker has remained just as funny as he always was.

Jody 06-02-2002 03:35 PM

This is sorta reminiscence of the Janet Jackson/Whitney Houston, both want to make movies about Dorthy Dandridge and low and behold, Halle Berry comes out of nowhere and makes a movie.

Chris, Chris, pay attention...Bill Belamy would make a fine prez!

thesweetestone 06-02-2002 05:08 PM

Chris Rock's movies are usually wack! His comedy is funny but he just can't act.

Swamp Thang 06-02-2002 06:56 PM

In case y'all forgot

Morgan Freeman played the President of the United States in a serious role in DEEP IMPACT (I might have the movie title wrong.. but it's the movie where an Asteroid crashes into the Atlantic and causes a Mega Tsunami that takes out most of the East Coast)..

nikki25 06-06-2002 09:49 AM

Did anyone catch Chris Rock this morning on Good Morning America? He was talking about his new movie, Bad Company, but also mentioned that he will be making a movie about an African-American running for president. (Let me digress for a moment: Why did I feel that it was too early in the morning to see or listen to Chris Rock?

Also, in the latest issue of Savoy Magazine, Chris Tucker mentioned that he is making a movie about a Black president...but his is already in office. Chris Tucker has been chatting with Bill Clinton as well as several noted actors (Denzel, etc.) to prepare for this role.

So I suppose both of them will be making a movie.

Thank you, I had forgotten and I am actually quite glad you remineded me. I was all in a huff and shaking my head at the negative images we give to black children...and look! there is a movie where they can see one of their own SERIOUSLY in an esteemed position.

thanks!

Bamboozled 06-06-2002 03:07 PM

I also wanted to point out that both Chris Tucker and Chris Rock are comedians, so should we expect them to put out movies that are anything but comedies? Now, if the powers that be were trying to cast Denzel or Laurence or Morgan (or some other "serious" black actor) in some buffoonish role, I'd have a problem. But in all acutality, I don't want to see either Chris attempt to perform a serious, dramatic role. They're comedians ... that's what they do.

I agree, I believe Swamp Thang made the post informing me of Deep Impact because I raised the question earlier as to why a movie with a black president had to be a comedy. I was not asking why Chris or Chris was doing anything, or who of them was better. I was asking WHY ONLY COMEDIANS WERE CONSIDERED. WHY ARE COMEDIES ON THIS SUBJECT SO MUCH MORE PREVELENT THAN DRAMAS WITH SERIOUS, REAL AND BELIEVEABLE STORY LINES? Why wasn't Denzel, Laurence, Morgan (or some other "serious" black actor) offered such a roll...and Swamp Thang politely remined me Morgan, at least, was.

But as an afterthought let me add, I agree with you in general. But, IMHO, the fact that they are comedians does not cause me to excuse their often-times perpetuation of stereotypes as "what they do". I will not be seing Undercover Brotha even though it is a comedy and "what Eddie Griffin does". I don't watch Martin. Yes, they are comedies, but there is a MAJOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOMEONE LAUGHING AT YOU, AS OPPOSED TO WITH YOU. I truly believe mainstream America is not laughing WITH us when they watch Undercover Brotha, Martin, etc...

just my .08 cents

CrimsonTide4 02-23-2003 10:08 AM

Looks like CHRIS ROCK will be first . . .

from EURWEB.com

A New President: March 28, 2003 is the date when President Chris Rock takes over the oval office in his film, “Head Of State.” Rock stars, and makes his directorial debut, in the comedy, which also features comedian Bernie Mac, Lynn Whitfield (“A Thin Line Between Love and Hate”), Robin Givens (“Forgive & Forget”), Tamala Jones (“The Brothers”), and Dylan Baker (Road To Perdition”), among others.

In the film, Rock’s character is about to be redlined from his job, but the untimely death of the party frontrunner causes him to get plucked from obscurity and thrust into the limelight as his party’s nominee for President of the United States. "This film is about the little man running for President. He's the lowest guy you could imagine getting a shot at the biggest title in the world. He's a "Rocky" of politics. When the nominee for President dies, the party is behind and they know they are going to lose the election. None of the good candidates will runs, so they choose me, an alderman from D.C. I'm the scapegoat, the patsy. Gilliam has a unique campaign style-- he tells the truth--which is unique in politics today. He's not constricted the way other politicians are, so he tells it like it is," explained Rock.

cinamin1 02-23-2003 10:55 AM

Totally biased

I would prefer Tucker over Rock, based on comedic effort. When it comes to being serious (and sexy) Chris Tucker wins by default!:)

I miss seeing Chris Tucker on the big screen, so I want to see him in as many movies as possible!:D

ClassyLady 02-23-2003 08:20 PM

I would rather see Chris Tucker's movie made first. Chris Rock's stand-up and his TV show are funny, but just doesn't work in a movie. It's not the right outlet for him.

...And doesn't Dennis Haysbert play the President in "24"?!

2Tuff2Quit 02-24-2003 03:58 PM

how bout...NO

I went to the movies this past weekend to see the movie "Old School" (which was hilarious by the way:D ), and they showed a preview for this movie in there. Everyone around me was laughing (mind you I was surrounded by the "neighbors" I was one of few chocolate chips). I didn't think that the movie was that funny at all. Chris Rock looks stupid throughout the whole preview. The only funny person in the movie is Bernie Mac who is running for vice president. He plays Chris Rocks brother in the movie. Other than that it looks like it should be a box office flop, and I emphasize "should" because we all know who is going to end up going to support this movie. It is the same people that keep supporting Murder, Inc. and Ashanti. The "neighbors". I hope that Chris Tucker decides to do his movie, and comes back to wipe Chris Rocks off the map.

I don't think it's just the neighbors, however. I think it's also some of "us" who get off on lowlife entertainment. Remember, most movies are made for the lowest common denominator -- teens and those who are just out of adolescence.

AKA2D '91 03-17-2003 11:00 PM

to the top.

AKA2D '91 03-27-2003 11:11 AM

anyone going to see it?

gamma_girl52 03-27-2003 11:29 AM

I saw a screening of it yesterday. :D

I thought it was pretty good...strictly for entertainment (so I don't give away anything) as far as the plot is concerned. And I normally don't care for Chris Rock but he did pretty good-and Bernie Mac was a straight FOOL :D

Dionysus 03-29-2003 01:05 AM

I just came back from seeing it. It was a lot better than I expected. The substance was great, there was a lot of truth to the movie, however I wasn't crazy about the style, it reinforced way too many negative stereotypes like any other comedy. But hell it's the media, I can't expect too much from it.

CrimsonTide4 03-29-2003 01:08 AM

I was going to the matinee today @ 2:50 but was engrossed in chapter 11. I will catch it on Monday while folks are @ work/school.

Dedicated1 03-30-2003 08:57 PM

I saw it today and liked it because of Bernie Mac. Bernie is a funny guy and I think that he saved the movie from being a total flop. All of his scenes were funny.:D

Gina1201 03-31-2003 11:49 AM

I saw it Saturday. It was alright. The dancing still has me laughing. I did not like Robin Givens in the film at all. Same goes for Nate Dogg.

Gyrl7 03-31-2003 02:46 PM

:D :p I saw it on Saturday. I think both Chris's are funny in their own way, and I like them both. However, Chris Tucker definitely should have been the Mays Gilliam(sp) of that movie, plus he looks better in a tux.

Chris Rock needs to just stick with his stand up and some comical movies here and there.

Bamboozled 03-31-2003 03:23 PM

I agree that I would have much rather seen Chris Tucker in this movie (even though I haven't seen it yet, LOL). Actually, I had planned on seeing it opening weekend, but Chris Rock messed all that up for me. I had the misfortune of seeing him on 3 different shows promoting the movie and he bugged the isht out of me. He was more loud and obnoxious than he usually is. Now, I think that his stand up is funny, but outside of that, I'm not feeling him. I'm always expecting him to break out in a jig at any moment. So, he messed up my desire to see the movie. I may just see it next weekend, since I heard Bernie Mac is funny in it.

Yeah Bernie kind of cleaned up the spilled milk of the movie that Chris left and I think they should have put him in sooner and not wait till almost the middle of the movie.

I definitely agree with you. I thought he would be there from after they left Chi town.

I just came from seeing it. Good, but I can see that Chris Tucker's will be so much better.

I was too through with Robin Givens. At the beginning she went OFF.

I dayum near flatlined when Lynn Whitfield (looked like yet another Sideshow Bob with that straw set) called Chris Rock an IAN --- ignant azz n****. I mean yeah he had his IGNANT moments, but umm well.

For those who saw Down To Earth, wasn't it ALMOST the same plot AT TIMES except he lived.

3.5/5 Stars from this viewer.

gamma_girl52 03-31-2003 07:46 PM

Now that you've seen it...

I agree. Bernie was there to pick up the slack at some points. Especially the part when they were fighting

What kinda bothered me was this: Why did they have to show that being ghetto in his campaign (i.e. the tour bus, all blinged out) was the only way he could get elected. While I'm all for "keeping it real" that still rubbed me the wrong way.

The movie was aiiight. I give it three mics :D

A Queen's reign was ended by a presidential candidate over the weekend, as Chris Rock's "Head of State" knocked Queen Latifah's "Bringing Down the House" from the top spot at the North American box office.

Rock's latest comedy debuted with $14 million, according to studio estimates, while "Bringing Down the House" was #2 with $12.5 million. Latifah's fish-out-of-water comedy, which co-stars Steve Martin, has made $100 million since its release four weeks ago.

The sci-fi adventure "The Core" debuted at #3 with $12.4 million, and the military drama "Basic," with John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, bowed at #4 with $12.1 million. The Academy Award-winning musical "Chicago" came in at #5, adding another $7.4 million to bring its total to $144.8 million.

The rest of the weekend's top 10 includes: the Stephen King horror flick "Dreamcatcher" at #6 with $6.3 million, for a two-week $25.3 million total; "Agent Cody Banks" at #7 with $6.1 million ($34.8 million, three weeks); "Piglet's Big Movie" at #8 with $4.6 million ($12.4 million, two weeks); the flight attendant comedy "View From the Top" at #9 with $3.8 million ($12.5 million, two weeks); and "The Hunted" at #10 with $3.6 million ($29.2 million, three weeks).
