Nicknames

Do you have a pledge nickname? I know that every chapter doesn't do it but if you have one, what is it and why?

My name is Astute because when I was a pledge I knew a little too much. I was really excited and I downloaded a copy of the pledge manual BEFORE I started pledging and I knew so much. My pledgetrainer was really surprised with all I knew and thus my name, ASTUTE.

Senusret I 05-22-2002 12:28 PM

BUFFALO SOLDIER!

My nickname is "Buffalo Soldier" and one of the reasons is because as the only black pledge in my chapter that year, I was sent to the frontier of uncharted territory. My Big, who named me, said I had a soldier's qualities, such as strength, patience, enthusiasm, etc.

I have a few other aliases, but those shall remain unstated. :)

gamma_girl52 05-22-2002 04:20 PM

Can I Answer!?

My line name is "C.E.O." for a lot of reasons I won't get into here
 :p :D
But since I was on the very first line, I actually got to choose my own name. The pledge lines after me...weren't so lucky! The big sisters choose names for them.

I had a question though. Do ya'll do lines @ your school, hence the line numbers? Do you guys sport that on your pari?

Nicknames

My nickname is "Silent Night" I was the quietest pledge but as a brother I plan to outlive my nickname.

Virtuous Woman 05-22-2002 04:25 PM

Yeah we sport our numbers..

Yep we wear our numbers and names on our para.

Yeah I was a little extra as a pledge:p :D

Senusret I 05-22-2002 04:29 PM

same here

Mu Alpha definitely has pledge lines, but not all of us wear para. We don't ALL go out and get crossing jackets as a line, but part of that is because we're not at an especially Greek campus. :(

Senusret I 05-22-2002 04:33 PM

Also

As I'm sure you know, gamma_girl, a lot of APO chapters nickname (without pledgelines) and a handful of non-HBCU chapters do line up.

What's REALLY interesting to me is when I went to my first national conventions, I saw MAAAADDDDD heads wearing letters with nicknames. . .but instead of line numbers, they wear their chapter numbers! Meaning, instead of a 2 or 9 like me and Astute, they would have like 67, 152, or 348!

It's just another example of our organizations' regional differences, like i was mentioning in another thread. Personally, I wouldn't want my chapter number on my 'nalia. . .because too many fools would ask me if I was number 778 on my line. :)

gamma_girl52 05-22-2002 04:53 PM

Cool

Oh alright ya'll. I was just wondering how that all went. Gamma Sig chapters are the same way, where they may have a nickname but not actually a "line number".

I went to a Conference once in one of our districts, and I as well as another soror had our line jackets on...now at my chapter, we go all out with ours, so when we went we got a lot of "oohs" and "ahhs". Sorors were trying to lean out of their chairs trying to catch a peek...I was more like, "settle down". You, too, can have one!

The average jacket @ my chapter cost close to $200, but we wear the h*ll out of them! :p

BTW, I'm a #7 on my line of 12...but I'm only 5'5. That meant I had like 6 midgets in front of me :D

DramaQueen42401 05-23-2002 08:32 PM

I am nicknamed Ghetto Fabulous. My big bros. Megan named me that b/c, like her, I had ghetto tendencies ( I'm also the only chocolate member in my chapter) and was truly a fabulous pledge. I led in service hours and was rumored to be a desirebale among the brothers. They loved me, lol.

notorious4it 05-24-2002 12:41 PM

Notorious

I have two line names given to me. 1. Notorious. The definition of thw ord is "well-known but unliked by many" (Nuff Said). 2. No Limit I got that name because we had some garbage with our line that I personally took upon myself to sweep up and throw out. I have a third nickname given to me by the colony that I helped to start...MAMA. :D
Notorious/No Limit #4
Usually though when people ask me why i have two names I tell them it is because there is "No Limit" to what I am Notorious $.

bro_strawter 05-27-2002 09:21 AM

My line name is Black and Mild. They named me that because that's what I smoke. Most people think I'm a dark skinned brother because of my line name well I'm not! I'm as light as they come:p

Where is at? :D

Virtuous Woman 05-27-2002 01:04 PM

Yes

Yes, there's only PUBLIC information in it. It's readily available at apo.org under publications

Senusret I 05-27-2002 01:15 PM

yup

No doubt. . .it is really convenient to have our public information available to download, especially if you all of a sudden have a large pledge line or class and need extra materials.

Yes, the Alpha Phi Omega pledge manual is online. There is nothing in the Pledge Manual which is not public. As an example of how public the pledge manual is, a pledge manual is sent as part of the package to a person who has requested information on how to start an Alpha Phi Omega chapter at the school *long* before they would make a commitment to be a member of the fraternity. (First commitment as a member would be at the Petitioning Ceremony)

The *only* things that Alpha Phi Omega publishes that are inappropriate to have on the web site are the Pledge and Brotherhood ceremonies. It would be just fine tohave the other ceremonies in the ritual book (opening, closing, officer installation, & memorial) online...

DETERMINATOR 05-31-2002 11:59 AM

Perstare et Praestare

I was given the name Determinator because of my optimism and ability to undauntingly go after a goal with a singlemindedness of purpose, reminiscent of the Terminator.

gamma_girl52 05-31-2002 12:55 PM

I Like!

That's a nice line name, Determinator. BTW, how many of you were on that line. I never asked Virtuous Woman that.

Too bad you're a #1 though :D :p
Just playing!

Well I have several nickname since I was the Ace I was nicknamed "Audacious"--I was always down for whatever whether service, fundraisers, pledge class pranks you name it I was there and when stuff got heated I would always get in the cut to attempt to calm the tension between some of my LB's and LS's.
Then because of an incident that I'll leave to the imagination I was named "Table Topper" and then finally my big named me "Lil' Bully" --which is my official nickname, due to the fact that I'm the shortest person but I'm always in the middle of whatever and because at a Fellowship once which happened to be a Bar B-Que, someone like pushed me and and then was like oh I didn't see you, so I pushed them back, and was like "now what", but the entire chapter still calls me "Table Topper".

I'm really glad this thread got brought back up, thanks Corporate Lady!

I got into a debate with somebody who was trying to tell me that only BGLO's have meaningful "line names."

Of course I was like, what are you talking about? It's sad that some people don't even bother to research so they can see the shared traditions that all the organizations have, no matter if they are black, white, Latino, Asian, Native. . .etc.

Reading the Divine Nine isn't enough! Ya got to hit the library, too!

**Steps off of his soapbox**

wvapogirl 07-23-2002 12:19 PM

My chapter doesn't do pledge lines... we just have pledge classes...

Anyhoo... My nicknames (oh boy)! My chapter loves to give out the nicknames! Traditionally, your big gives you your first nickname, and then anyone in your pledge class or above can give you a nickname. Let's see if I can remember all of mine:

Chipper- (because I'm very bubbly and my laugh reminded my Big of a chipmunk)

Mountain Goat- (excessive alcohol at Deja Vu, a campus in the middle of mountains... 'nuff said)

Lemming- (follow the leader!)

I know I'm probably missing a few... time to get on the phone with brother Christie and refresh my memory!

deepestbluest 08-02-2002 12:59 PM

Ok, here it goes... my nickname is A Schoolgirl Named Desire (yes, a very long nickname, which happens quite often in my chapter).

My Big named me this because we have a movie theme on my branch of my tree (the movie being a Streetcar Named Desire). The Schoolgirl part came from an outfit that I wore to an event when I was pledging (a plad uniform). I won't go int the rest of it's meaning!

Virtuous Woman 08-02-2002 05:58 PM

LOL

Your secret's safe with me, sands!!!;) ;) ;) :D :D

deepestbluest 08-03-2002 02:36 PM

Whew!

Thanks sands! Just promise you'll still keep that promise if I ever hold a political office!;)

I Have to tell you about our sands that I just met yesterday. Her nickname is Primatine.

Attractive#7 02-19-2004 01:37 AM

I'm just so pretty

********whoooooooooooooooooooooooooa******
Blow the dust off of this baby...
My name Attractive came from a question I was asked. Using the letters A P and O how would you describe yourself?

Using the letters A P and O, I'm Attractive...

And from that point on, ohhhhhhhhh I'm just so pretty became my claim to fame. Although certain haters wanna put a ?? mark behind it :p there is no doubt about it!!!

SprintPCS 1925 02-19-2004 05:37 PM

My name is:

Well, My line name is Sprint PCS and it has a double meaning. I use to always talk to the members about problems I was having with people in my Pledge Class. But what people dont know is that it always wasnt me telling our business but it feel on me because alot people assumed it because I did it before. The 2nd meaning is because I never stop talking on my phone. If you see me anywhere I will have my phone on me because I cannot live without me phone. I almost died when my phone was broke for like 3 days.

Our Pledge Class name is 15 W.A.Y.S. to RUNTELDAT. We were very imformative to the Big Brothers when we were pledging. Im number #9 of 15.

Attractive??? is #7 of the 15 W.A.Y.S.

I don't know if I'd call it a 'regional' difference. Most chapter have pledge classes, only those influenced by BGLOs use lines. Thus for most APOers, they are going to use nicknames & their chapter numbers on the back of their shirts.

Now, mind you, that's not a hard & fast 'rule'. When I was at the Easton Event back in 2000, I was confused by the shirts worn by several members of a chapter in NY. They all had very strange numbers, some 2 digit, other high 3 digit, some negative (a wide range of numbers made no sense as they were all actives and should have have number close to each other). When I asked about it, I learned they didn't use chapter numbers but each person picked their own unique number. ??? whatever.

naraht 02-19-2004 11:13 PM

Chapter Number

I haven't got a clue what number I'd put on a shirt. Probably 192810, my national number. I was #8 of 21 in my pledge class, but that was determined Alphabetically and my chapter didn't do anything with order in pledge class. My chapter number is 890A (Yes an "A") at the end. The 21 members of our pledge class were given the numbers
893, 894, 895, 896, 897,898,899,890,891,892,893,894..., 903

By the time nationals realized it, another pledge class had gotten their numbers. So we just left it. Nationals now puts "A" next to the brotherhood numbers for the duplicates starting with yours truly.

No.

Mu Alpha Chapter at Georgetown University was chartered in 1956 and borrowed the "line" concept from the Alpha Chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Service Fraternity, which was established in 1920. DPE used the "line" concept since it's inception.

Georgetown did not integrate until the 1950's.

The first Black Greek lettered organizations came to Georgetown in the 70's.
