Girlfriends ~ Cancelled?

I was just sitting here thinking about the season finale of GIRLFRIENDS which I did not used to watch but am now hooked.

I got to thinking about which character am I most similar to.

So I ask you my GC sistas, are you Joan, Toni, Lynn, or Maya?

MeezDiscreet 05-20-2002 10:22 PM

well, in the last few years, i've come to the realization that i have multiple personalities (have ya'll ever had one of those lipstick tests where they look at the shape of your used lipsticks to determine your personality? i had a tube in my purse that matched every single one! but, another story another thread...), i believe i am a little of all four...

i'm pretty level-headed and a lot of people seek my advice and approval, like joan

i'll admit it, i'm a little street-ish but can check it, like maya

toni and lynn...hmm...er, um uh...well, i take that back. i'm a little like two of them ;)

SweetestDiva 05-21-2002 01:09 AM

Both my sister and my boyfriend have said they think I kinda look like Toni. I haven't seen this show in a grip since my cable provider decided to ax UPN, so I really can't remember what she looks like. I'm guessing she's dark with long hair. ;)

I think I act most like Maya. Sometimes my ghetto side manages to surface despite my most EARNEST attempts.

nikki25 05-21-2002 10:24 AM

Yesterday's show was highly complex...which was great! Did you all catch their conversation about Maya's cheating. What did you think about those statements? Toni didn't want her to tell that she cheated on Darnell because she had gotten away with it. Joan was saying that she only wanted to tell to ease her own guilt. I thought that was interesting given some of the convos surfacing around the good Greekchat!

I believe that she should have told Darnell long ago. That way, if he stuck around, he wouldn't have stuck around in a lie, like he eventually did. The reason why she was so disshelved at the end of the show was because she had been found out! She was so silly during that whole Stan nonsense. Like my granddad used to say..the things that you do in your "youth" will come back to "hant" you.

I'm probably like the "new" Toni...concerned about other people's feelings, with a healthy sense of self. And, like Joan in my focus on my career and being a "mother"-like figure in her friends life.

I love that show because of the "real-ness" of the dialogue. I may not agree with Joan's decision to be with "Junior" on last night's episode, but her emotions and the way that she expressed them to her old boy and Toni were real. What was also real was the way that Maya's hubby found out about the affair....those dang cell phones!

Ms. Jay 05-21-2002 10:42 AM

I'm Joan when I'm nice and Maya when folks piss me off!

lenoir1922 05-21-2002 11:30 PM

I think I am a lot like Joan. But my favorite Girlfriend character is Toni.

#1 Leading Lady 05-22-2002 11:52 AM

Well since I am a Gemini and have Gemini traits I will say I am Maya and Lynn because we have the same drive ;)

Ideal08 05-22-2002 04:12 PM

This is a hard one...

I'm really not sure. Geez.. I haven't watched the show in a minute. I guess I'd kinda be like Lynn. She's kinda flighty and fly by the seat of her pants. I'm like that sometimes. CT4, what you think? Who would you be?? :p

I am more like Joan because I see her as the leader of the group, the one who generally has her head on her shoulders, who the others turn to advice. She is one who is focused career wise, but at the same time does not have a man right now. She is the one who tells her friends how she feels and when they "reject" her words/advice/insight, she is hurt but still loves them. Joan is the motherly type of friend. Oh but I can be a combo of Maya and Toni given the right situations. :p

Ideal is kind of like that but I can see the Lynn in her too. :D

Steeltrap 05-22-2002 04:28 PM

Even though I do not look anything like Tracee Ellis Ross, I think I'm most like Joan, based on superficial traits. She dresses well, has a cool, classic, minimalist style. :D
Like Joan, I'm focused on my career, but don't have a man.

Shelacious 05-22-2002 07:39 PM

I really enjoyed this past episode of Girlfriends. I'm not a watcher of the show per se, but this entire episode (outside of that weird Lynn lesbian thingie) rang true for me--I was really feeling Joan this episode--really.

I don't know who I'm most like--probably a cross between Joan and Mya. I don't know Toni's character well enough, and I know I'm very little like Lynn.

CrimsonTide4 02-24-2003 10:28 PM

TONI CHILDS makes me HURL!!!

No really. She is whiny, annoying, and a BRAT!!!

It took 4 diamond rings to shut her azzzzzzz up. She is starting to make me hate watching the show.

**flips a coin to decide if I wanna watch part 2 or watch My Big Fat Greek Life**

NOWorNEVER 02-24-2003 11:45 PM

Joan. She's focused, stable, smart, and corny sometimes.

RedefinedDiva 02-25-2003 12:08 AM

I think that I am a little bit like all of them.

I am like Joan because she is focused on her career, likes to have control, wants to be the mother and model best friend.

I am like Mya because I can get a little bucked on people sometimes. You know how Mya can get straight "ethnic!" :D

I am like Lynn because I am on my way to my second degree and I still plan on going to law school. However, I just want to be an eduacted "free-spirit." As far as the "freak" thing that she has happening, I don't think that I am there yet. :p

I am like Toni because I think that I am fabulous. I am trying to create a life that is simply spectacular. I think that Toni is taking her less than stellar childhood and trying to make a future that provides all the finer things. What's wrong with that? :p :o She is a little stuck-up and materialistic at times, though.

That makes two of us...:D

Joan - People like to ask my opinion and advice on things and I try to be the model friend.

Mya - There are times where I have to remember that I grew up in the projects when I need to get in someone's azz after they pissed me off ('cause that's how we roll in BK). :p

Toni - I like the finer things in life (although I'm living on a beer budget). Unlike her, I'm not a brat, nor am I shallow.

Lynn - I might wind up being a "professional student" just like her. :p

There is nothing wrong with tat. I am sure most folks want to live life comfortably and have things that maybe they went without while growing up. . .

but she is SO MATERIALISTIC, SHALLOW, PRETENTIOUS, adn WHINY lately that I want to hurl. I am starting to doubt that her and Todd will make it to the altar.

On another note, I felt bad for Joan last night. I knew that was why she was tripping on Ellis.

AKA2D '91 02-25-2003 11:51 AM

I guess I am MORE like Joan and Lynn. I've been called a professional student in my day...WTFE. YOU AIN'T paying my bill, so shut the (bleep) up! (That's the part of Mya I can relate with).
I am the loyal friend, always trying to help. Usually, I'm always giving, but never receiving. Always "with", but more times "without." I can definitely relate to Joan.

Toni and I are alike in SOME ways, but I'm NOT shallow like that. I can admit that I am spoiled, but I am not a brat bout it. If I don't get it...I don't get it. Move on...

She acts a plain fool! What was up with ALL the parites? A gift for each party....HELL NAW! (That's the Mya in me again). :D

I don't think that she (Toni) and Dr. Man are going to make it down the aisle either.

Did anyone hear that Joan and William will get together? Also, Lynn would leave the show? Maybe this came to me in a dream.

Oh and yall know I have some Mya up in me, don't most of us? :D

Yeah I remember the Lyn leaving thing in a Celeb Dish thread back in the fall. She got saved. Maybe that is why she is on a celibate plot line now.

Oh and I was too throught that William got with Prissy Bytchy azz boss, he must thrive on EVIL, SHALLOW, OVERBEARING women: Yvonne, the other heffa, and now Ms. Partner @ the law firm. I just knew ol boss lady was going to set him up for sexual harassment or something.

I am just waiting on Mya and Darnell to get back together.

DivineSistar 02-25-2003 12:13 PM

I love this show!!!

:) I love the show Girlfriends! I think Joan is too needy. She seems like she has to have a man. I think lynn and mia are so funny. But it's all about TONI CHILDS!!! That's my girl! She's the DIVA you Love to Hate! Plus we have the same name. Gotta love those Toni's!:D

CrimsonTide4 03-17-2003 10:35 PM

Tonight's Girlfriends was REALLY GOOD.

HC however Kimberly Elise's character never has any GOOD LUCK?
HC she has played a desperate mother, mother of a sick kid, a former slave haunted by her sister, and now a woman living with AIDS?
HC I hope they bring her back though as a recurring guest?

AKA2D '91 03-17-2003 10:48 PM

I was like "whoah"

You think others are all happily murried, etc when you are not married, but you find that their life is in more turmoil than yours.

I bet Joan is full of happy, happy, joy, joy that she didn't marry Brian. It's unfortunate for their friend, but...

If THAT is not a good time to say GLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORY and do a holy dance, I don't know what is.

RedefinedDiva 03-18-2003 01:02 AM

The episode was good. And Toni's gown was GORGEOUS!

CrimsonTide4 03-18-2003 01:48 PM

For those who saw last night's ep, what would you have done with the knife?

Me myself, I would have washed it off like I do any other dish and been done with it. :)

stardusttwin 03-18-2003 06:17 PM

I remember when my friends mother was first diagnosed (15 years ago) I was scared to go to the house because after all these years of practically living there if I didn't accept anything to eat or drink they would know why. And I would never want her mom to feel uncomfortable. I was scared - although my head had read up on everything and knew better I still was scared to use any utensils in the house.

Today - I would wash the knife and go on about my business.

And I've done that gloooooory dance - soon as it became public about someone I used to date being diagnosed I got calls begging me to go get tested - folks didn't believe me when I said we NEVER slept together - it just didn't feel right and I couldn't put my finger on it at the time. Well years later I now know it was the same situation as on last nights show (he was living in the closet, not admitting he was actually gay) - THANK THE GOOD LORD I didn't let him push it nor let my horny college hormones take me down a feel good road I would regret for the rest of my life.

Nothing says loving like mr. duracell ;) .

Like you CT4, I started off not liking the show but it grew on me and now I am hooked. Last night's episode was outstanding!

To answer your question, I would have put the knife in the dishwasher with the rest of my dirty dishes. But then I have been volunteering with AIDS organizations for 12 years, so I know there was no danger.

By the way, Kimberly Elise's mother is a Delta and we watched her grow up. :D

DELTAQTE 03-19-2003 08:54 AM

it brought up a lot of questions about the "homothug". A thread I started a LONGGGG time ago. It is very real y'all!

And what is worse is that it's true, these men don't think they are gay, it's normal to them:eek:

I read the book "B-Boy Blues" a few years ago. The issue of the "homothug" was discussed in the book. One of the characters denies that he was gay although he's in a relationship with another man. He feels that as long as he's the "giver" and not the "receiver", everything is cool.

A real eye-opening book.

carolyne 03-20-2003 12:47 AM

Monday's episode reminded me of one of my favorite quotes:

"Sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck."

I was hoping I had misread it, but since you all saw it I guess not. :(

I am currently on book #4 of the B-Boy Blues series. Between this guy's series and E. Lynn Harris, it really makes you wonder what's going on with your man! But then again, you should wonder and protect yourself! The days are long gone that you can be totally free with anyone you choose! Protection is readily available. Use it! And if whomever you're with doesn't want to use it, time to move on!

Last night's episode of Girlfriends was wonderful! It was a fresh and much-needed departure from the crazy comedy that already makes up the show.

I hope that once the producers of these sitcoms realize that they have hooked the audience's attention, that they will do more meaningful and life-changing shows.

My home girl played the heck out of that part. I really felt like someone I knew had died when I saw the ending. I was really hoping they would make her a recurring character. I think they could have had a greater, long-term impact with the AIDS story line if they had. :(

I agree. It would have been nice to see someone on TV in the Black, heterosexual community living with AIDS.

AKA2D '91 05-13-2003 01:20 PM

That would have been nice. They could have gotten really down with it by having one of the friends take care of her while she was sick. :o Which girlfriend? Joan. How about that?

story:
Reesie steals the boyfriend, marries him, and becomes infected, then Joan takes care of her. :o That would have been a GREAT storyline. Oh yeah, bring the ex-boyfriend that infected her on an episode or so and have him come to terms with his 'ways'.

Is that too far fetched or what?

Didn't they say he had already died? Or am I getting it mixed up with something else?
