Proud Moments
Hi All!
When are you most proud of or awe struck by your sorority/fraternity? What moments or events made you say "WOW!" :D Edited 5/23: Now, I'm finding it VERY hard to believe that Deltas are the ONLY ones who have proud moments. Come on with the come on. If this thread was drama filled, y'all wouldn't have any problem putting in your $2. |
having crossed exactly a month ago, i haven't had a whole lot of experiences as a member but i will tell you something that happened that was so beautiful...
the day following our coming out show, me and two of my line sisters went to eat breakfast at denny's (at 6 p.m. mind you--we had only been awake for 3 hours because we k-i-c-k-e-d it! ). one of my line sisters was wearing the straw hat with our beloved letters on the hat scarf when she passed a table with an elderly woman and her daughter when she went to the restroom. i heard the daughter tell her mother, "there is one of your sorors." *as an interjection: i love the word SOROR* we hadn't been told the proper way to greet a soror yet, but when my line sister returned, me, her and my roommate, who is also my line sister, just went up to the table and blurted out "we're DELTAS TOO!" we told her that we had just crossed and we hugged her. she told us that she pledged in, if my memory serves me correctly, sometime in the 40's. then she said "welcome to the sisterhood." i got teary-eyed and almost cried right there in the middle of denny's! what was funny is that she then pointed at her daughter and said "she went the other way. she's an a.k.a., but i still lover her." as we were leaving, her daughter whispered to us that she was so glad that we came over to the table to speak to her mother. that is one of those experiences that may seem simple to some but i will never forget it |

Make ya say WOW!
MeezDiscreet.. that story was the bomb, and sorors, I know Meez so I can imagine her teared up. I crossed exactly one month ago tomorrow! We go to the same school, different campus.. if you get that...
Anyway, the way I met Meez is one thing I can say WOW about! I had just met her and she and her LS's came to my probate showing so much love & support! I have to say WOW when people you don't even know act like they are long lost relatives. All the congrats, welcomes, hugs, etc. from sorors and bruhs. You just have to look back and say.. I "made"it. It was all worth it! Also, my second WOW, was when I heard about the last count of how many sorors were pre-registered for the convention... a little over 8,000. Now that's WOW  My 1st Convention... How bout that ! Yours in Delta. |
My WOWs (partial list)
~ The Opening Plenary/Welcome Event is 2 months from today
~ Meeting more Sorors that I've come to know & love via the internet ~ My chapter Sorors ~ Speaking with my chapter Sorors who have been members for a while about my ideas & thoughts & concerns and seeing "WOW! :D" in their eyes ... that's more than a WOW for me, that gives me goosebumps! ~ Saturday @ Chapter meeting, they gave an updated number of Sorors that had pre-registered: 10,000 ~ Neophytes |
My WOWS!
After 33 years I am still wowed by:
Our Founders Convention Opening Past National Presidents Dorothy I. Height Excited Neophytes Being a part of 3 generations of Dynamic Deltas Being able to go ANYWHERE and find a Sister. |
1. April 5, 1997 when I became a Delta. It was an emotional journey that semester overall with the death of my father, working on my senior thesis and having to work with my line sisters (ASAT;)) but when the journey or that phase of the Delta journey was complete, I exhaled. :D
2. Attending my first National Convention and meeting so many sorors and just seeing all of that WHITE in Nawlins and the waves and waves of Crimson and Cream. 3. @ National Convention, meeting so many Delta Dears and talking with them about Delta and just them as Black women. 4. Meeting Past National President Soror Marcia Fudge (y'all I love her). Let me explain, Soror lives in the suburb I grew up in and she became the FIRST BLACK MAYOR, FIRST WOMAN MAYOR and FIRST BLACK WOMAN MAYOR all in one election. She also signed my membership certificate. 5. When GC SFs cross the threshold into DELTALAND. I cried when SOROR MeezDiscreet became a SOROR. 6. Meeting notable sorors, i.e. Ruby Dee. It was before I became a Delta but that's all right. 7. Embracing my former teachers who are sorors. 8. Reading about the accomplishments of sorors everywhere. Reading books by sorors, writing them and them writing me back. 9. Finally my friendship with Kelli. I never tell her just how much she means to me but y'all I really value our bond. We met on a listserve in 99 and had many convos on AOL IM and e-mail and then phone. We were roomies in Chi in 2000 and we clowned. Then in November of 2000 when my house was broken into and the theiving mickyfrickies stole my stuff including my SORORITY PINS INCLUDING the big two, Kelli replaced the SORORITY PIN for me and I remember thinking dang no one else even offered but she just did it. She has done numerous other things outside of that, like buying me some books, artwork, a Curious George book;), etc. but she has also taught me more about Delta and helped my love for Delta grow. |
Hi sorors,
I have had so many moments that just make me sit back and think about how wonderful it is to be a member of our illustrious sorority. One thing that I can say is when my linesister's and I first returned to school in Fall 2001, we had a calender full of at least two events a week. We were the only Deltas left on campus, all of my big sisters graduated. We hadn't seen an example of how our chapter should be run. The only thing we had to go by was what was told to us (but we could call on our big sisters anytime we needed them). At our second sorority meeting, our advisor stood up and told us how proud she was of us. She said we had her worried because sometimes we waited until the last minute to get thing straight, but everytime she thought we weren't going to pull an event off, we proved her wrong. She said she was so proud of us. When she said that, we all looked at each other and started getting teary-eyed because we realized that in the end Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was worth it and it is and will continue to be a "lifetime commitment." When we were doing our Adopt-A-Street clean-up, a gentleman from the neighborhood was driving past and he stopped and thanked us so much for cleaning up the street. He have us a $100 donation. That made us feel good and let us know that even the little things make a difference. Being with my linesisters and now my neo's also have a deep impact on me. "They all try hard, but the Deltas run the yard" |
Now that is a BIG WOW!

and some of ya'll don't know! SOROR CT4 did so much for me. there would be times when i would be stressed and at my wit's end and would check my email. when i would see "you have an e-hollah" in the subject line, it would truly brighten my day. and i have never even met this DIVA and she just showed me so much love and encouraged me so much. when i crossed this was my train of thought: hug my line sisters--hug my big sisters--call my momma--email CT4!!!! |
the WOWs
Oh my GOD.... MeezDiscreet...
We have soooo much to look forward too !!!:D I dont know any of you but I love you all !!:) I just hope one day I will be able to form a bond with some of you even if I never see you face to face. Yours In Delta... Proudly:o |
Tears come/came to my eyes when:
1) I finally crossed the burning sands...oh my... 2) I think of the rich history of our beloved sisterhood 3) I see Delta D.E.A.R.S. - they are so sweet and such an inspiration. My ship's grandmother is a Delta D.E.A.R. and she is still active :) 4) I receive one of those hugs only a Sawrah can give. 5) I discovered that the love I have in my heart for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. shined through so as to inspire, among other things, my Spec (pledge daughter) to seek membership into Delta. When she told me that, I got all choked up. I am so poud and so happy that I can now call her Soror. There is none Greather than Delta Sigma Theta! OOOOOOOO-OOP! MY SORORS! :o |
Of course a big "wow" was my first convention opening in New Orleans...it was SOOOO awesome, as in, I was in AWE because it was SOMEthing else!! I turned 30 during that convention, and my linesisters who were there all gave me gifts...it was the bomb (I came up :D )!
Another big "wow" is seeing notable sorors who you've read about like Dorothy Height, Marcia Fudge, Gwendolyn Boyd, Yvonne Kennedy...you're actually SEEING BLACK HISTORY, ya know? Meeting sorors in person who you've chatted with on the internet for ages is always a big WOW, especially when you "click". I've met sorors in person who I knew online and it was cool, but on a couple of occasions, it's been like WOW, and we have really become FRIENDS, not just sorors. But here were my three biggest "wows". My sister (who is a soror) was the maid of honor in her friend's wedding - they've been friends since elementary school. She really wanted to plan some type of bachelorette function, but because she didn't live where the wedding was taking place, she had no idea what to do. I'd met a soror online who lived in that city, and sent her an e-mail asking for advice. The soror found a (SUPER DUPER FINE) stripper for us and set everything up. I met the soror in person for the first time on the night before the wedding when we had the stripper perform, and like I said, we just CLICKED. Although she had never met me, she really hooked us up. I just couldn't believe how she really went out for me. And of course I got plenty of cool points from my sister. My second biggest "wow" was when I got the opportunity to write my first letter of recommendation - for my sister's friend who is mentioned above. I've known her since she was 5 years old, and I just knew that she would be a great addition to our sisterhood. When I was at her initiation, all I could think was WOW, I have a "branch" off of my "Delta tree". I am very proud of her, and excited about the great things that she is going to do for Delta. All because of my letter :D My final "wow" was when I still lived in California. I was active with my chapter's Delta Academy, and we had a session right before I moved. After finishing the activities with the girls, they told me to sit down and then surprised me by putting on a talent show in my honor as a going away present. One girl played the flute, another tap danced, it was SO CUTE. At the end, my mentee came up to me crying, and said, "I DON'T WANT ANOTHER MENTOR!!!" You know I FELL OUT. I told her that I would always be her mentor, no matter where I move (she's such a little sweetheart). Sometimes when we have to deal with "Drama" Sigma Theta, it's nice to reflect on the beautiful parts. :D |

One of my Proudest would be when I first crossed i attended my first , leadership conference and just meeting and hearing allt he wonderful stories and experiences of Sorors that crossed in the 50's, 60's etc, that had so much to share with us. You were able to just see, learn and feel all of the history in the room. I also loved the way that Older Sorors are just so blunt
Amother would be bringing in my first neo line. The see the expression of joy on their face made me remember when I crossed and we all creid together. |
I am still a neo myself but one of my many favorite moments was watching my line sisters step in a show. I was sooo sooo sooo proud. And of course it felt oh so good to hear Soror for the first time. But my proudest moment was the night that I crossed and my line sisters (where are you Pop-Up) and prophytes went out as Sorors instead of pyramids and big sisters . And we were in a diner and a Bruh just happened to be there. And our prophytes introduced us as Sorors. Ohhhhh it still feels good. I just love being a neo. See you in ATL.

Ok...Darnit if I was in the middle of replying to this and AOL logged me off? GRRRR!!! Here goes again..
My proudest Moments in Delta: Becoming a member of the greatest!! March 31, 2001. I am proud of our Illustrious Founders, our Dynamic Herstory, and our Sorors! It feels so good to find a Soror in any corner of the earth. I am also honored to be a member of my chapter - Epsilon. I am honored to be in such company as Past President Marcia Fudge, who is currently the Mayor of Warrensville, Ohio, as well as all my Chapter Sorors who have been showing OSU the epitome of a black, proud, intelligent, caring woman since 1919. No proud moment is not complete w/o mentioning my sands, 23LOD. We've been doing big things, and I'm proud of all of us. We're leaders in every facet of the OSU community, from student government, community service, academic affairs, to student organizations. We WILL continue to be the epitome of excellence here at OSU and in the community.. :) While I'm at it, let me give a shout out to the Epsilon Chapter Step Team for Continuing to hold it down for winning the NPHC Heritage Festival for the FOURTH (count 'em, fourth) time in a row. I am also glad that I have gotten to know so many Sorors. As of today, I have 23 Sorors on my AIM buddylist, and that number will continue to grow. I also love that I can pick a Soror out in a crowd...we have this something, an aura about us that I can detect almost instantly. Yes, sounds somewhat crazy but I've been able to tell someone was my Soror (and 10 times out of 11, she wasn't wearing nalia). and Lastly, I love how excited neos are. Although I'm still a neo, :), some of the newness has worn off...ok I'm lying :D But...the neos from PK come to mind...they are SOOOO EXCITED ABOUT EVERYTHING!! :) I want to stay excited about Delta, even 30-40-50-60 plus years from now, when some of the 'newness' wears off. :) Ok that was my 19.13 worth. YID, |
I have been so touched by all of the responses that I just had to add my 1913 cents.
Although I am Neo I do have a few touching moments. The first would be when I crossed the buring sands on April 6, 2002. Another would be the first time they refereed to me as a SOROR. And the most important was the love and support that I received from my friends. They don't know it but they gave me the strength to keep going when times were rough. One of my friends that helped support me isn't a Delta, but she still kept my spirits up (actually she is a SGRho). My other friend, 1Babygirl2000 was always there cheering in my corner, she wrote my recomendation, and was there with all smiles when I crossed (even though she was saying BOUT TIME). I also love all the love I get when meeting other Sorors and Bruhs as well as other Greeks. |
I'll say the night I got the call. But the day my Dean called me Soror is the single most proud moment in my journey to DeltaLand. That's when it finally sunk in :)
If you are reading this, I need you to know that I love you so much. You gave me the greatest treasure that can ever be bestowed upon a women; membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. You have given me something permanent, 240,000+ preminent women that I can call my Soror. I'll love my DST to the day that I die, EA forever baby. |
One proud moment for me was the night I crossed which is April 29, 2002. It took me 5 years to get to that night. I cried like a baby. I think I cried for over an hour. To hear professors that taught me in classes on campus call me soror. To hear women that I have only before Delta seen on TV and read about in the newspapers in Saginaw introduce me as their soror, I still tear up.
Another very pround moment was graduation day on May 11, 2002. It took me 9 years to get to that day. I had on my DST kinte on over my gown (even though it wasn't allowed by the university, I dared anybody from administration to tell me to take it off) and when the president of the university called my name to recieve my degree, I heard the loudest OOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOOOOP in that gym!!! I looked up and I saw sorors from all over in the audience cheering and clapping. I was the only one from my line to graduate this year and at the graduation there were also 2 alumnae sorors receiving their master's degrees. During the recessional, in the midst of all the clapping and cheering by families and friends, I could still hear the calls all over the gym and it made me so proud that my sisters (some I didn't know) came out to see me and my sorors graduate. I am so honored, so blessed to be a part of this sisterhood. |

OMG! That's exactly how I was with DivaLawGirl! I met her about two years ago in a different forum. We began to email each other and just clicked. Next thing I know, we're on the phone for HOURS at a time as if we had been knowing each other for years. She was truly my rock during the entire process. I couldn't even make it home after I crossed to call her. I borrowed one of my line sister's cell phone (I need to get with the program and get one myself :D ) and called her from the restaraunt. I couldn't wait to talk to her. I'm so glad that I know her. Now, we just have to meet each other. |
Although I'm not even a month old in Delta yet, I've had plenty of memorable and proud moments. My line sisters and big sisters will tell you i'm the sentimental one of the line. I cried many times when we would go over the words in the songs. I felt so much passion and love in the words. I kept trying to put myself in the author's shoes when they wrote those songs. If you really listen to the words, you'll FEEL what Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is all about.
I can't possibly list all of the proud moments that I've had. Just studying the herstory alone makes me proud. I am just amazed by Sorors Madree Penn White, Dorothy Irene Height, and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander. My line affectionately called them the "Bad Mamma Jammas" because they've done so much in their lives and for our beloved sorority. To piggy-back off of what many of you said, I almost choked when I heard the president of my chapter introduce us as their new sorors. That word means so much. The day we crossed was so emotional. I cried so much. I cried before we even started. Our Regional Chaplain said a prayer for us and I cried. My line sisters all laughed at me, but they expected. But I think the biggest tears came after we crossed and they showed us where all of our presents were. In the middle of all of our gifts was the most beautiful thing, our membership certificates! I couldn't believe that they were real. When they told me that I was holding my official membership certificate in my head, I started to almost sob. I had waited on Delta so long and I couldn't believe that I had finally achieved my goal. I'm so ready to work with and for Delta! DISCLAIMER: I apologize for the length, but I get very emotional when I talk about Delta. It is so important to me. I'm quite sure my sands feel me. ;) |
Quote:
Another proud moment was when I went to the Regional Conference in Baltimore last year and I saw alot of women that went to my old church who I never knew were Delta's. I remember how I used to look up to them and admire them when I was younger and to see them and they acknowledge me as their soror was the best feeling in the world. My last proud thing is that when I crossed and went home my mother who has no greek afiliations and doesn't know too much about greek life had my room filled with red and white things, elephants, violets and even had this guy make a glass statue of fortitude for me. This made me proud because she looked up things online (which she hates to do) and asked sorors at her job questions on what to get just to be supportive of me in my endeavors. |

Isn't a mother's love something? :D |
I don't know where to even begin...
The first time I was called Soror or called one of you Soror. The sound of that word addressing me still gives me goose bumps. My first regional conference and my first convention. Every line I have assisted through the process. I have helped reactivate 2 collegiate chapters and got to bring in babies of m own last spring! (I see you Robbi, (JJSP01)!) When I had a car accident right in fornt of chapter meeting and although I was knocked out and was disoriented when I woke up I was in the safest place imaginable because Sorors outside took care of me and Sorors inside were praying for me. (And the first things out of my mouth were to take the invitations to my line's anniversary into the church because I had them and they had to get delivered!) Earlier this month I was in BWI airport traveling alone waiting for my plane on a trip for work. I spotted a Soror (she had a DST bag). When there was a break in her conversation, I walked over, said Good morning Soror and was greeted by a big smile and a warm hug, a nice conversation and a little companionship beofre my flight. She was on her way to take her first cruise and we talked like old friends. I glowed the rest of my traveling time that day. Then there are the little moments- just bumping into to Sorors all over town- B-more is FULL of Deltas! Reading about prominent Sorors, cuz' we are some accomplished women, attending an initiation, watching a coming out show, feeling the excitement simply pour off a neo, just simply being around Sorors and feeling comfort in the bond. Knowing I can lean on the shield any time, day or night I can call someone who has got my back. One day in step practice, we were all tired before we even began, we had been at it for weeks. A soror came in with some chicken she had bought on her way to practice to eat for dinner. Another Soror had come straight forml work and not gotten to eat. The one with the food gave half her dinner to the Soror who was hungry. All she could do is smile and say, "see that is what sisterhood is all about. What's mine is yours. Some other folks woulda bit your hand sooner than give you their food when they are hungry. But your true Soror is going to hold you DOWN!" Ooooh, I love my Sorors! It is a fine time to be Delta Sigma Theta, yes a fine time to be DST! |
Guess this means me...

I have so many "wow's" That's been my word for quite a while.
1. Crossing!! that was more like "whoa!!" 2. After B-Ball games I get excited and realize how much I love my Lines Sisters, my Sorors, and my Sorority. 3. Our state meeting. That's the biggest Deta event I've been to. So many beautiful, intelligent, black, women in one place. Watch ATL here we come!! 4. My number 17's wedding!! 5. Seeing DXi Spr 2000 together after being away from each other. 6.Everybody loves us!! The love I feel from fellow greeks. 7.The Bruhz!!! I know that some can be rude at times, but thankfully, the ones I have met have been wonderful. Example: We road tripped to a party @ Frances-Marion (1 hour from Fay State). To make a long story short.... a fight broke out, guns were involved, and the bruhz (who did NOT know my linesister or myself from the man in the moon) came running, looking for us!! You could see the worried look on their faces, it was cute (after the fact). 7.5 That uno tre (DG)is so out!! He's a true brother!! Oh yea!! The night of our probate my ls got into a car accident, my bruhz were there once again!! 8. Thinking to myself "These are 29 ladies that I didn't even Know about before going through the process, now I would do anything for them. I love the Unthinkable 30 from the depths of my heart. " I love ya'll!! Oh no, I'm getting teary eyed. 9. I leave my cell phone on 24-7 just in case any of my line sisters need to talk or have an emergency (even when I'm roaming)!!! 10. I was going to stop, but I would have left out something very important. Homecoming 2001. After we stepped so many older Sorors came up to us and stated how proud they were (of us) and how they had so much faith in us. This was before they knew we won. One of the "hardest" Sorors had tears in her eyes, this really touched me!! |
WOW!
First, let me say WOW one time for all the many WOWs I've experienced and those yet to come.
1. The Opening at National Convention 2. The greek show at National Convention when all of the sorors are ALL OVER THE PLACE strutting, party hopping, line dancing, etc! That had to be the most fun I had with sorors from any and everywhere! 3. Singing with the National Convention Choir 4. The up close and personal pictures I own of notable Deltas 5. Seeing, in print, the contributions that I made to my chapter via news articles and/or statewide newsletters 6. Seeing new sorors excited about Delta and when they start to work, boy, that just makes me Proud I can go on and on! |
Proud Moments
WEEEELLLLL! My proudest/best moments in Delta include the following: (hey Circuit!!!!!! thats my grandbaby ya'll)
1. Becoming A Soror 2. Opening Ceremony of the National Convention 3. When my babies (Theta Alpha Chapter) won Midwest region Chapter of the year. (I am thier chapter advisor) 4. Seeing my babies of Lambda go on to work for Delta and just being a possitive role model in Delta for them. 5. Doing the work of Delta in general and touching lives. 6. Winning the National Step Show in New Orleans:D 7. Meeting and actually sitting down and talking with Past Presidents. 8. All the potential the sorority has to offer in the future. |
Chilling with Jesse Jackson and serving as his campus guide when he ran for president.
Listening to NAACP President and great Omega Man Dr. Benjamin Hooks speak to our chapter backstage while he told us pledge stories before going on stage to speak. Watching the neos break down in tears when they finally realize that they are truly Bruhs. The elderly women who cried as we assisted them in throwing a 100th birthday party for a fellow nursing home resident. The way they appreciated the smallest things that we did during that service project made weeks of hell worthwhile. Stepping in purple pantyhose Stepping in a gold jockstrap Stepping in a gold loincloth The first time someone gave me something free just because I was a Que. |

Oh yeah!!!
Wow!! Soror Rae Lewis Thornton came to Fay State and spoke. I was thrilled. I even have pictures. She is a beautiful woman and a dynamic speaker. For those who don't know....she is a Honorary member- history... (but that's not why she spoke). She is living with HIV/AIDS. If ya'll see her in Atl...go talk to her....she will keep you laughing!! She told the audience if any of them were even thinking about being in her great Sorority then they "betta" know who she is. For lack of a better phrase Soror is "off the chain!" oo-oop! |
