How long before you had a Beta chapter?

Hey all! I haven't posted much in a long time, but I have another question. I've found some information about this in various other threads, but I was hoping I could get a little more info.

How long did it take your organization before you had two chapters? Did your organization start with the idea of becoming national some day, or did you originally intend to be a local? And if you know, did your alpha chapter have everything figured out as to how to work with a potential new chapter, or did they learn as they went? If they didn't have it all planned out for the installation of a new chapter, did everything go smoothly with that second chapter or was it difficult for the alpha chapter and/or the new one?

I appreciate any info that you all can give me!

The1calledTKE 05-18-2002 12:35 PM

TKE didn't have a Beta chapter for 10 years. The Knights of Classic Lore (TKE before it took the greek letter name) was approached by Phi Delt alums tring to restart one of their chapters. The KCL took the name TKE to look more apealing to Phi Delt nationals. After being turned down a couple times but Phi Delt nationals for membership. After being turned down TKE members went agaisnt the Phi Delt alums to keep trying and decided to become their own national fraternity. Bet Phi Delt regrets that one since TKE now has the most active chapters out of all the fraternities and is in the top 4 with most initiated members.

Sigma Nu had 10 chapters active before it ever had a "beta" chapter. The old chapter nomenclature was Roman Numerals. Trying to adapt itself to be a more "Greek" organization, Sigma Nu adapted the Greek Letter system for chapter name around 1880. Our "Beta" chapter is still active, it was founded in 1871 two years after our founding at the Virginia Military Institute.

If you've ever been to our chapter listings on the Sigma Nu website, that explains why the early chapters aren't in order:D

PBear19, Remember, each Greek Org. started out with 1.

I sometimes look back after starting Beta Chi if I could have gone National! WOW would that have been something!

We thought the best way to go was to affiliate with a Strong National of which we did. I have never looked back, but sometimes think of the things I designed and wonder what it would be like to see 1000,s wearing and displaying it!

There are some Locals on site that are expanding as we speak so hang in there! It is a damn tuff road to how, but if you plant enuff seeds and give it enuff care, it just may grow!

Our Beta chapter came 2 years after our Alpha. Over the next 8 years we got 11 more. Then they all (except Alpha) folded. But that's another story. :p

The longest time between folding & recolonizing would be our Kappa Phi chapter...founded in 1909, closed sometime between then & 1914, reopened in 2000. :D

greeklawgirl 05-19-2002 11:20 PM

Alpha Gamma Delta was founded with the intention of becoming a national women's fraternity. We were founded May 30th, 1904.

On June 1, 1905, 12 girls from the University of Wisconsin received word that a charter had been granted them to create Beta Chapter. Gamma Chapter followed in January 1906.

Alpha Gam spanned North America by 1909, and became International by 1919. Pretty amazing considering how limited communication was at the time. :)

MysticCat 05-19-2002 11:31 PM

Beta chapter of the Sinfonia Fraternity (that was the name originally) came into being on October 6, 1900, two years to the day after the founding of Alpha Chapter. There was some disagreement in Alpha about whether they should seek to expand the Fraternity -- fortunately, the expansionists carried the day.

AXD's Beta chapter was installed almost exactly 100 years ago at Iowa Wesleyan. The funny thing is that it had been a chapter of PEO, and it had been formed before AXD's Alpha chapter. (I'm not sure what year that was but Alpha was founded in 1893.) So our Alpha is older than our Beta!

AXD was founded with the intention of joining KKG, which is why dark and light blue were chosen as our colors. When we instead decided to go national, we added the gold.

My Chapter!

Our beta chapter received its charter 8 years after our National Founding.

AOX81 08-28-2002 12:12 PM

Our Beta Chapter was founded 13 years after our Alpha Chapter.

LatinaAlumna 10-01-2002 06:01 PM

Four Years...

Our (Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc.) Beta Chapter was established after 4 years, and in a completely different state, which a lot of people find pretty interesting.

NoShame_Gamma 10-02-2002 07:43 PM

Beta Chapter

Our Beta chapter (Univ. of Arizona) was established 7 months after the Founding/Alpha (Arizona State Univ.) chapter. However, it was 4 years before we established a Gamma chapter (Univ. of Washington)

excuse_3 12-02-2002 08:36 PM

Our Beta Chapter was chartered 4 years after the 10 founders began the fraternity (Beta Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.).

nyrdrms 12-02-2002 09:31 PM

Our Alpha chapter was established in 1874 and our Beta chapter in 1888.

SigK_Bama 12-11-2002 12:23 AM

Our Alpha, Beta and Gamma chapters were all located at Colby College where we were founded. When membership got too high in the Alpha chapter, the Beta and Gamma were formed. In 1893 it was decided that Sigma Kappa needed to expand past Colby College, so Beta and Gamma received no more initiates, and Delta chapter was installed at Boston University in 1904.

CardinalSM 12-11-2002 02:46 AM

Our Psi Chapter was founded in 1895 and our Chi Chapter was founded in 1898. Shortly after that the Phi Chapter was founded in Canada! We grew from there to be the largest women's fraternity in the country! Go Chi O! That many women can't be wrong ;)

swede 12-11-2002 03:48 AM

Fifteen months after the founding of Pi Kappa Phi - Alpha Chapter, Beta Chapter was chartered.

kateshort 12-11-2002 10:37 AM

Adelphean Society (Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi) was founded at Wesleyan in GA in 1851. Decided to go national in 1904, added Beta chapter at Salem College in NC in 1905, added Gamma (Mary Baldwin in VA) and Delta (UTexas Austin) that year, and added one or more chapters every year following until 1916. (We'd gotten up to Alpha Eta, the 33rd chapter, by the end of 1915.)

knight_shadow 05-20-2003 12:54 AM

Omega Delta Phi's Beta Chapter (UT-El Paso) started as an interest group in 1988, one year after national founding, but became affiliated in 89

astroAPhi 06-01-2003 08:14 PM

Alpha Phi was founded in 1872 at Syracuse University and expanded to Northwestern University in 1888.

I don't think I ever knew that. Did your founders petition KKG or just decide against petitioning?

Beryana 06-01-2003 09:43 PM

Alpha Omicron Pi was founded January 2, 1897 at Barnard College and became National with the installation of Pi chapter at Tulane University September 8, 1898. AOII came into being with four and national by one (only one charter member of Pi was initiated at installation as the others were out of town due to a yellow fever scare).

CatStarESP4 09-25-2003 08:08 PM

AEPhiSierra 09-26-2003 09:49 AM

aephi's alpha chapter was founded at Barnard College in october 1909 and our beta chapter was established 2 months later at Hunter College.

LambdaPapi 09-30-2003 04:00 PM

Our Alpha Chapter was established in 1975 @ Kean University. Our Beta Chapter was founded at Rutgers University, New Brunswick in 1979.

cultural 11-17-2003 03:45 PM

Hi,
We don't have a Beta chapter yet but are hopeful that it will happen in December or this year or January of next! Wish us luck, it will be about 1 year after our establishment!

g41965 11-21-2003 02:15 AM

DU was founded as the Social Fraternity at Williams College on November 4,1834. The second chapter was founded at Union College in 1838.
DU has never used the Alpha, beta etc. system of numbering chapters instesd naming chapters after the host institution.
The longest period a chapter was inactive before revival cahe at Harvard active 1880-1942 revived in 1999.

fijijr 11-21-2003 10:02 AM

Alpha Chapter May 1st 1848
Beta Chapter June 7, 1848

Part of the short amount of time was that the founders had as one of the first agenda items on May 1, 1848 how this "association" could be venture out to more colleges and what would be that process.

cultural 02-03-2004 05:54 PM

Zeta Chi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Inc, Beta chapter founded in 1 yr.

audaz49 11-02-2004 02:34 AM

Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. was founded in 1990, and Beta chapter was originally founded sometime between 4-9-1990 and 1992, when Gamma chapter was founded. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly when, because the chapter folded and then was refounded and the original info is not available. But nonetheless, it was within 2 years, and now, after 14 years, we have 74 chapters and 9 current colonies, and 11 alumnae associations. WOW

naraht 01-27-2005 11:57 AM

For Alpha Phi Omega, it was a little over a year. Alpha Chapter was December 16,1925 at Lafayette College. Beta Chapter was January 11, 1927 at U of Pittsburgh.

Not necessarily. Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority was formed at a meeting of eight women's service groups (some called sororities, some not) at which the letters, colors and shield were taken from various different groups who attended.

Pi Alpha Phi was founded in 1926, and their Beta Chapter was founded in 1988. :) That's a long time.

Our Alpha Chapter was February 20, 1994, and our Beta Chapter was established roughly a year later.

SweetyD 04-03-2005 03:24 PM

As AOX81 said our beta chapter was founded 13 years after the Alpha chapter, but the two chapters meet as one group since the schools are so close together.

dxp_tiktok 07-06-2005 04:33 PM

Delta Xi Phi was founded in 1994 at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and our Beta was founded at Cal State Chico in 1998.

AXWhoah 07-06-2005 05:39 PM

Okay back up...Sigma Kappa had three different chapter at one school? I don't even understand how that could happen....It's the same organization, how would they compete....I am so confused
