expansions??

hey phi siggies!
i was reading some of the other panhel forums, and so many of the other sororities are expanding. i know we added a few chapters last year, but does anyone know if we're going to be expanding to schools with larger greek systems anytime soon? while its great that we have so many chapters, it would be even better to reactivate or expand to larger campuses across the US, dont you think?

i just can't wait to spread the phi sig joy!

SapphireSphinx9 05-13-2002 11:56 PM

I agree!

We were founded last year, and I was surprised to find out that there aren't any new colonies being built. Especially on the west coast. There are only 8 chapters in California, where the other greeks in So. Cal have like 20! I was talking with an SAE at a social this weekend, and he told me that they have 260+ chapters! That's insane! There was talk that we were going to look at Cal. State Los Angeles, and Cal. State Fullertin... But nothing has been done yet. I would really like to see Phi Sigs at the big schools though. Get our chapters back at USC, UCLA etc. I'm not sure how things are back East, but over here, the schools were Phi Sigs are, are pretty small. We'll see what happens!

Glitter650 05-14-2002 02:38 AM

HEY !!!
I totally agree we need some more representation out here on the west... and some represtentation at the bigger greek campuses in the south... I think it's harder to expand to schools that have big traditional greek systems as they already have houses built and all of that.. but if we are PHI sigs and we AIM HIGH we can do it !! I agree with restarting the UCLA and USC chapters... I know that UC Santa Cruz wants another national.. WHY NOT PHI SIG ??!! I think maybe if we all tell National what we think maybe it will happen. Not many people seem to know about us... it's all tri delt and kappa kappa gamma LETS MAKE OURSELVES A NAME LADIES !!

phisig4eva 05-14-2002 09:59 PM

RIGHT ON!!

that's EXACTLY what i'm talking about girls!! so someone out there who reads these posts -- at convention this summer, TALK TO NATIONALS ABOUT THIS!! i know the colonization process is not the EASIEST thing in the world (i talked to some girls from pi last summer at convention) BUT we should definetly give it a shot! i'm glad there are sisters out there who are feeling me!

SapphireSphinx9 05-15-2002 05:48 AM

Colonization is not the easiest thing, but it sure as hell isn't the HARDEST either! If 32 women outta 40 can make things happen at Iota Gamma (I being one of them...) then it must not be that bad!

Colonize! Colonize!

Who would we talk to about getting colonies started?? Cuz if there were any colonies being built in Southern Cali, I'm all about going out there and helping them recruit... Helping them with everything they needed!

What do you think??

LITP~Beth

MooseGirl 05-15-2002 12:55 PM

I would love to see Phi Sig expand more too...especially since there are only 2 Canadian chapters...so many phi sigs don't even know we exist. (perfect example is convention's theme this year)

But Phi Sig does do more work behind the scenes than we know about...I surfed onto a local sorority's website...they wanted to go national and invited many groups to their camous...Phi Sig looked too, but decided we didn't have enough alum support for colonization.

So this just shows that national is looking around, but maybe we should urge them to look harder :)

Glitter650 05-15-2002 02:05 PM

EVERYONE EVERYONE please E mail national and tell them to look into Nu Beta Omicron... (you can read about it in the rush at UCSC thread in greek life.. or rush forum I think) THIS GIRL NEEDS TO BE A PHI SIG !!!!! San Francisco chapter I"m sure would be glad to help them through the colonization process... I wrote national to tell them about this local looking to become national.. but haven't heard anything and as far as I know only alpha Xi Delta is going to present to these girls so far.. Maybe if we all write and say... there is a group of girls VERY interested in giong national at UC santa Cruz they will listen and contact this girl who started Nu Beta Omicron. !!!

phisig4eva 05-15-2002 04:17 PM

whats the email address for the expansion committee??

phisigQT 05-15-2002 10:18 PM

here iis the email address for lynn coffey the director of extension...

psychoff@uisi.com

i hope this helps. i think you girls are great...i totally agree that we need to expand! :) phi sigs make the world a brighter place!

SapphireSphinx9 05-16-2002 12:00 AM

OK!

Alrighty, well I wrote an email to Lynn Coffey but it didn't go through. Is that the right email addy??? I have it saved, so I can send it again.

LITP~Beth

phisigQT 05-16-2002 10:52 AM

thats the one in the national directory... ask your archon or scribe for her address. they may have a more updated copy and be able to give you the right one! good luck :)

lilminer01 05-20-2002 11:29 PM

I feel ya girls! I go to coastal in SC, we're the only chapter down there :( we could def use some company!

SapphireSphinx9 05-21-2002 02:55 PM

Possible Schools

Do we have names of possible schools we could look into expanding at?
I know for in Cali we mentioned USC, UCLA and Berkelely... Basically just trying to re-colonize at those three schools. I know that some alumn in the South Bay area were looking at CSU Los Angeles and CSU Fulltertin. There was UC Santa Cruz... And what about San Diego??
But what about on the East Coast and down South? What schools are by your chapter, that you think would benefit from having a Phi Sig chapter there?

LITP~Beth

MooseGirl 05-21-2002 09:21 PM

The most recent directory I have is last November's...and that looks to be Lynn's email...but if you zoom in it is psychoff@visi.com. You may also want to email members on the extension committee, or chapter consultant's since that is one of their main jobs...in fact, according to my directory, at least two past consultants are on the extension committee Casey and Michele...if you want their emails let me know.

anyway, hope this is useful

SapphireSphinx9 05-21-2002 11:58 PM

Oh yeah...

Moosegirl~
I'd love to have their emails! Thanks for checking that out for us!

WELL i've been doing some snooping, and i saw that phi mu has chapters that are closing at Michigan State University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and North Dakota State University. also, there's been some talk of both chi omega and d phi e chapters both closing at cornell, but i'm pretty sure d phi e is leaving for sure. i doubt both of them are leaving. but i know we have tons of chapters in the NY area so it would be nice to reactivate cornell, and michigan state and UNC chapel hill would just be outstanding. so there are some other ideas!

phisig4eva 05-22-2002 04:02 AM

and i forgot -- the AXO chapter at University of Cincinnati closed down earlier this year as well. might not be bad to check out the situation there.

SapphireSphinx9 05-22-2002 05:22 AM

Great!

Those are some big schools! Chapel Hill would be great!!! Also, I noticed a thread about the top universities for greek life... http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...threadid=18500 Whattya think???

LITP~Beth

MooseGirl 06-11-2002 11:06 AM

I know U of M - ann arbor does not have a phi sig chapter...I don't think OU does either, but I doubt they're looking to expand.

I know in canada We might be able to look at U of Western Ontario...they have the biggest greek system in canada but they only have around 10 sororities but 30 fraternities...

We should write something before convention, if possible, so they can talk about it there.....some of the extension committee changed, but most of them just moved to the extension strategy committee....(I got the May directory)

idigphisig 06-11-2002 05:50 PM

hey girlies -
i think it's a great idea to write to the expansion committee - when is convention and how do we get a hold of the members?

SapphireSphinx9 06-11-2002 09:33 PM

Carolyn and I are going to Convention... It's July 24th-28th. Anyways, yeah, I was suppose to write up a letter, but haven't gotten around to it yet! :( I'll try to get it done this weekend.

LITP~Beth

MooseGirl 06-12-2002 12:14 PM

I would help write the letter...but i really suck at letter writing (i mean, i didn't even get an interview for consultant....my letter to them must have been really bad)

Anyway, we're in no big rush, there's still a month before convention.....we just need something for them, to say hey we're members and we want to make sure you're working your hardest to establish new chapters and we think you should look into these schools......

as of the may directory we had one colony....Central Connecticut State University

that's better than none :)

Lynn Coffey's (director of extension) email is already posted...if anyone wants the extension strategy committee names or email PM me (i don't want to post them out here)

I really want to go to convention...I'm just too poor :(

phisigduchesscv 06-19-2002 02:16 AM

new colony

well that is good news that there is a colony at Central Connecticut. At least we have a colony for this year. Does it by any chance give an email address for the colony and a snail mail address. Maybe Beth, myself and other founding sisters of Iota Gamma could write to them and give them encouragement. It helped when we had some contact with the other So Cal chapters but I know we all would have liked even more contact but its hard when the closest chapters are all an hour away. wonder who the "Big" Sapphire Chapter is for the colony.

phisigQT 06-19-2002 09:34 AM

What a great idea! I am sure that they would love to hear from another new chapter...you could probably get in touch with nationals for thier email address etc. or maybe try the schools greek life webpage (if the have one) and see if individual chapters/colonies have websites!

LITP,
Meghan ;)

MooseGirl 06-19-2002 01:58 PM

In the directory they only have the advisor's name and address, phone number...and no email.
Her name is Melissa Garden, If you would like her info PM me.

The colony is in Division 1, with Gamma Zeta, Epsilon Pi, Zeta Epsilon, Zeta zeta and Zeta Lambda chapters, so one of them might be the "sapphire" chapter.

oh wait....in another section of the directory they do have Melissa's email :D Phisigmel@aol.com

phisigsigchic 07-10-2002 06:26 PM

Wow sounds like things in the west coast aren't so wonderful. We east coast girls (especially north east) can not complain. Here in NJ we have 12 chapters and NY which is right next door has the most of any state, 32. Penn. has a lot too. So we don't feel very lonely at all. Actually sometimes having so many chapters near you is kind of a negative thing. I know at a certain other college the phi sigs are the biggest meanest hazing people ever! (i won't mention which college just in case they happen to see this post). I haven't met them personally but when my boyfriend told his friend who goes to that college that I became a Phi Sig, she was shocked that such a nice person as myself could have endured the totrture they supposingly put their girls through. And we are SO not like that! At our school we have the rep of being some of the nicest and not as snobby as some other sorority girls. So maybe sometimes being the only chapter around is a good thing. Because if one phi sig gets a bad rep in the state, everyone just assumes all of them are like that :(

phisig_kuuipo 07-16-2002 09:41 PM

Schools

It's not the size of the schools, it's the size of our hearts!!!! For the love of Phi Sig!!

phisig4eva 07-24-2002 11:38 PM

dont forget -- those of you going to convention - get the scoop on any new colonies for me, and make sure to mention all the schools on this board that are potentially looking to expand!

i'm counting on you guys - cause i cant even visit - i tore my ACL :(

so update me ASAP -- i'm so jealous!

Sorry for jumping on your thread. Actually, the Cornell D Phi E chapter is not closing. Good luck with your plans for expansion! :D

phisig4eva 07-25-2002 10:22 PM

cream-

glad to hear it actually - when i heard about that before i obviously was not fully informed. i'm glad you set the record straight and i am VERY glad delta phi epsilon is keeping their chapter at cornell.

wishful thinking on my part, i'd just love to find a way to reactivate the phi sig sig cornell chapter. dont mind me, please!

Peaches-n-Cream 07-26-2002 12:19 AM

phisig4eva - No problem. Nothing wrong with expansion, and Cornell is an excellent school. Plus I always had a great time with the Phi Sigma Sigma sisters when I was in college. :)

I hate to burst the bubble about Michigan State, but they would not be open for outside expansion for a long time. Alpha Xi Delta would be the first allowed to recolonize followed by AGD and Phi Mu. If AXiD doesn't recolonize for a long time then everything else is held up - same with AGD. . . .

SapphireSphinx9 07-29-2002 02:32 AM

Well at least we know what we're getting ourselves into. Some schools just won't be able to handle us! ;) Did anyone get a chance to speak with the Director of Extension at Convention???

PSLAM~Beth

phisigduchesscv 07-29-2002 08:12 PM

expansion teams

Just got back from Convention. It was awesome. Anyway, Lynn Coffey mentioned that they are now going to look for collegiates to help serve on the extension teams as we are sometimes able to hear through the grapevine more then CO is about schools wanting to expand. They had a sign up list at Convention if you want to be on the expansion team. I'm sure if you want to be on it all you need to do is email Lynn Coffey or CO and give them your name, chapter, email address, mailing address, and phone numbers and let them know you're interested in being on the expansion committees as a collegiate.

For more good news. I met the women of Central Connecticut Colony. They were great and I gave them our chapter email to get in contact with us since we just went through colonization a year ago. Looks like they will be initiated in October. I do know they are looking for a lot of support and ideas so if any of you are in chapters near them contact their advisor (her info was given in an earlier message in this thread). They said they would love to hear from other chapters.

LITP,
carolyn
