Bet Step-off

I was disappointed with the step-team that represented for us. I know I'm going to catch hell on this but I have the right to my opinion. We have many sgrho step teams that are very good and I wish one of these teams would have represented for us. The girl that introduced the step-team had an accent and could barely be understood. I was also disappointed that there were only 3 sorors in the 106 audience. I know for a fact that we have a lot of sorors around that area so where were they? Little things like this is why people think there are only two Sigma Gamma Rho's in the universe. Please don't get me wrong I'm proud of the ladies for getting out there and doing their best, but this was national television so I think we could have represented better.

Sigma Gamma Rho> BET Step-Off

Hello Soror,

First I want to say that I am not going to give you hell about your statement, because I believe that everyone has a right to their own opinion! :) Personally I thought the step team did rather well. For having such a short period of time to step, I thought the steps were pretty tight and were together as they stepped. Now I agree that our Soror had a thick accent who introduced us but, she showed that we are a diverse sorority and I thought that they could have had anybody to say what we are about, but they picked her. I can not think of exactly what she said her title was, but I do remember it being in a leadership position which is more than I can even say for myself!! :) So I trust they had their reasons. Now I can not confirm or deny that there were only three sorors in the audience, but I am sure we all know that we may be small in numbers. And there has been many a day when I have been the only soror surrounded by other Greeks, but that did not stop me from representing SGRho with an EEE-YIP that could break an ear drum!! :) Soror as long as you know that we got it going on...that is all that matters. I think in time who knows
what may happen. But just because you have a load of people in the house doing the call etc., does not mean that they are going to represent you in the best light! :) I think we were called on to step and that is what we did. Of course there is always room for improvement, and I know that you said what you said out of concern, but BET in my opinion is boot leg, and I have seen complaints from all in the Divine 9 about the program in itself and how it was conducted. You still can't even vote:( But just know Soror that I feel you on what you said, but remember that we
not only as individuals make up SGRho, but as a collective whole we all need to do our part to represent, and I am sure that issue will be discussed, but just not in a public domain. EEEE-YIP Soror

You are right soror. Thank you for your beautiful response. I hope I didn't offend our sorors that stepped :( . I love Sigma Gamma Rho and I just want others to appreciate us. I know we are small in numbers, but we are not that small. We have to show our face sometimes so others will know this. The Boule is in July and I hope this is one of the topics that will be discussed. Sorors please try to support each others activities, if another chapter is giving a carwash, party, stepshow please support them. I would have been in the BET audience for the stepshow but I didn't find out about it in time. LOVE TO ALL MY BLUE AND GOLD SISTERS:)

I forgot to add this to my response. Yes soror Tenacious1922 I did go on the BET website and vote :) .

just a little insight on the taping

Hello Sister Greeks!
I went to the taping. There were more Sigma Gamma Rhos and Zetas for that matter at the taping. Some of us decided not to sit in the audience because quite frankly, we would like ridiculous amongst the teeny boppers. ;)

Please know the Royal Blues are definitely represented in NY something strong! But, remember 1. the taping was done during finals and 2. The show's demographic is "pre-college age"...an ideal setting for Archonettes and Rhoers. ;)...not college students and grads. 3. A local step team works to the benefit of the show's production, if a quick change is needed.

I also know your Soror who spoke on behalf of your organization. Let me tell you, that sister is FLY! I have heard her speak in other settings. She is very knowledgeable and has a fabulous personality. I believe she is a regional coordinator. (forgive me if I have the title wrong.) The adrenaline of being on NATIONAL television  I am sure played in to her speaking faster than her normal speed.

Good luck!

The Original Ape 05-06-2002 04:18 PM

Yall represented!!!

I saw your sorors perform on BET, and I thought they showed real well.

babydoll3 05-06-2002 04:42 PM

SGRHO!

Sorors,
I would like to first start off by telling my fellow sorhors you did a very good job ;). And Anilsa Nunez, is the Area 4 Coordinator. She represents harder than anyone I know and I think she did a wonderful job. I have had numerous Hispanic's come up to me and say they didn't know they could join Sigma Gamma Rho, now they know because of Anilsa. She holds it down for SGRHo and I can't think of anyone that could have done a better job. Kudos to Anilsa and the sorhors that stepped.

soror nunez is an awesome soror! a few years back (prolly around 97ish) i was having some issues that had to do with sigma and i voiced them on our old listserv at the time.... i dont even remember what the problem was about, but i do remember that she called me (from the east coast to california) to talk and see if there was anything she could do to help (and i had not known her before our conversation)!

she is beyond hardworking and TRULY her sisters keeper!

prettypoodle6 05-06-2002 05:07 PM

Hello Soror Sweet-N-Rho,

Soror I know you said what you said out of Love for Sigma, and it is all good!! :) We all want what is best for SGRho. Now... Soror Pretty Poodle6, please say it ain't so!! :( I thought we had until 6pm to vote. Shelacious 05-06-2002 07:29 PM

You all are so sweet :). Your Sorors set it out, and I did think it was nice to have your Soror of Latina descent representing! For sure we'll be representing the Blue side of the Divine 9 on Wednesday! Thanks for the support, and considering the BET site is majorly whacked, it was still a good showing for both organizations. :)

Sorors,

Great Job Representing.
I think you all did an awesome Job especially since I know you all :D

I want to say to the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta you know the Rhoyal Blue reigns supreme. Do your best and go for the win.

Congratulations to all of those who represented on national tv, being a star isn't easy.

Also Sorors Soror Anilsa is the Area IV Coordinator in the Norhteastern Region. Soror Anilsa thank you for representing our diversity.

Just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that your Sorors looked great!!!

It takes a lot of courage to get on National TV (or in any competitive arena) and attempt to represent the organization that you love so dearly.

All the teams represented well.

:(

The audience consisted mostly of Non-Greeks. There were 5 Zetas, 3 Sigmas, and btwn 12-20 Deltas. FYI.

Thats not entirely true. There were actually 5 Zetas in the audience, 3 Sigma men in the audience and about 15-20 deltas do not recall seeing any Sigma ladies, which did suprise me. There are a lot of SGRhos in NY. But the crowd was definitely dominated by non-Greeks...and ironically an older than usual crowd.

prettypoodle6 05-08-2002 05:14 PM

the step team was notified at the last minute at around 1pm that they were going to be included in the finals (and the taping was to start at 4pm). so unfortunately sorors we not on the guest list to attend.

BET STEP-OFF (three teams)

Pass this along to all sorors and soror listservs. We have come to an agreement with BET and the Poodle Prints team is on their way to the studio as we speak to compete in the final of the BET Stepoff.

They will compete against Zeta Phi Beta and the winner between DST and AKA, so there will be THREE teams.

The show airs on Wednesday 6 p.m. EST, VOTE on Wednesday so we can insure that this time the results are legit.

Good luck Poodle Prints!!!

Ps. I recieved this today.....

Hey Tenacious1922,

Well to be honest, given that BET received complaints and a threat from members of SGRhos in regards to the voting situation, they made a last minute decision to allow the SGRho team to step. I am guessing that is why there was no representation of SGRhos in the audience, but regardless, the outcome of the show was determined by the non-greeks in the audience.

Hey Everybody,

This email surprised me as well!! I have to go the BET Website and take a look around and see what is really going on. I as well thought it was over. But regardless of the outcome, I don't mind seeing anybody step! :) Maybe this will show BET that they need to do things right the first time around.

I went to the BET Website and it said for Weds, along with their other guests.....sororities step final, and I just saw a commercial on BET about it, so I will just watch and see what is going on. I aplogize in advance if I have confused anybody...I was just trying to pass on the message I recieved. I am watching it now and they named all three groups, but was this taped yesterday??????

Ps. Just saw the show, and I am so sorry!!!! :( The way the email was worded, I thought we could vote online today... But congrats to the Ladies of Zeta Phi Beta:)

Sorhors and Sisterfriends,

Sorhors you did a wonderful job representing us and I really enjoyed watching them break down those blue-ti-ful steps. To the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta you did a great job and congrats!

I don't think that BET needs to host any more step shows since they really don't know what their doing.

Actually, I must back my linesister PrettyKitty on this one. The coordinator for the BET show told myself and our other 7 team members that some threating emails, phonecalls, etc. were received. However, I'm feeling your point about being treated fairly but from her standpoint, everyone was.

As for BET hosting anymore stepshows. .I think they need to take a 1-2 year hiatus to really get it organized and running smoothly. Is that even possible at BET? lol. .:)

I agree 100%. At first I didn't understand why many greeks on here would disagree to the stepoff but now I see why. As I saw in another thread, the D9 was put on TV to be Sambos. Shuck and jive so our viewers can watch what they perceive greek life is all about. AJ even said the show would cause girls to want to "pledge" a sorority. Face it-- this atrocity even had members of SGRho call and make demands for them to rectify the voting calamity that happened last Friday. I think stepshows should stay on the yard and out of the national media.
SexzZeta and PrettyKitty, you and your team did a wonderful job on BET. Your performance was very professional IMO, and please don't be offended by my remarks. I just think BET saw this in the wrong light and the show your sorority and all of the D9 did means so much more to your respective orgs. than just a sideshow for the public. For example, there will be girls who would want to join XYZ because they step so good. Could anyone say they will consider including someone into their org. just by their stepping abilities? Ican see it now..."I want to join XYZ because I am able to step and I know you all want good steppers in your org. so your team will be tight for the BET Stepoff!":D :D ok, i'll stop my rambling here...

Rockie, you know I love like a real sister :) ...Everyone in my opinion was treated fairly......but that is what we were told and were given that as the reason that your Sorors were put back into the competition. Whatever the controversy, I think BET handled it well when they said "we tied"...and your Sorors did well...I think everyone is to be commended on their performances.

TRSimon 05-09-2002 02:07 PM

The truth

1. BET did not handle business and violated their own contract.
2. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. handled business.
3. We were put back into the competition.

BET doesn't give a rat's behind about idle threats. They would not cave in behind a bunch of emails and phone calls from us. Don't believe everything you hear. Especially from BET, who you guys were gearing up to boycott not even a year ago.

Re: The truth

At this point Sister Soror, it's a moot point. But from what we were told by the AKA who organized the show, she was personally threatened and based upon the preponderous of all that went on they decided last minute to add the Rho team to the show. I am not sure what contract you are referring to, because no where in the contract that I am looking at does it state how the show was to be voted on or the winner selected. All of that was decided and agreed upon word of mouth by BET and the teams.

To us (the Zeta team) it was not that serious. We were just out to represent our Sorority and have fun while doing it. We had no idea who won the online voting thing until after asking for it to be stopped to give us enough time to prepare our journey from VA to NYC in the event that we won. We had fully decided if we lost to move on and be happy with our performance. So, it just so happened that we won and then again with the overall competition.

All and All I was happy with the performances.

Now as far as the boycotts...from what I was told that came from the NPHC execs not the actual organizations and the letter went out w/o their approval. And that is why there was no boycott.

Please don't call us Rho we are the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and our founders put Sigma First for a reason.
