Tampons (a topic the queasy shouldn't look at)
I apologize in advance for asking about this! If you get queasy about women's personal period stuff, I'd say stop reading right now :).
Well, here goes...I was supposed to have a private swimming lesson today. As I was changing in the locker room, I looked down and noticed that I was leaking. Just 30 minutes ago, at home, I had inserted a Playtex Slimfit Tampon (regular absorbency). So then I went to the bathroom and wouldn't you know it, my suit was ruined. I then took out my tampon, and it was fully soaked. But I don't understand! In the past, I've used tampons without a problem. Usually I don't have to change it until 4 hours later...even if my period is heavy, like it is now. I wonder what went wrong?? Then, my friend who was in the locker room, too, handed me a tampon without an applicator. I could not get it in :(. I've never inserted a tampon without an applicator. Unfortunately, I had to tell my cute swimming instructor -- who's a guy -- that I couldn't swim today. He asked why and finally I had to tell him. Unfortunately, there were 2 other guys there, too, and all three of them were cute! I was mortified. Luckily, they handled it pretty well. Anyway, I guess my question is, do I need to use a different kind of tampon, or did I insert it incorrectly?? Again, sorry for asking this question! Thanks!! |
I'm gonna PM ya!
|
I'll spare the guys the gruesome details and PM you newbie.

Girrrrrl, bust out the KY Jelly, grease the sucker up real good, jiggle it in zig-zagged, and you'll you be fine!:D:o
Oh gee, I can't believe I just said that. *blushing* |
Dionysus, LMAO!! :D You trip me out. lol!!
On a more serious note. All tampons are not equal. Those little slim ones do not expand like the normal ones do, causing leakage. I use the ones without the applicator, O.B and they are probably the best tampon out there. There are a couple of things you dont go cheap on and Fem. stuff is one of them. |
Slimfits never seem to work well but that may just be me. I always use super absorbency with an applicator but thats because I am a dancer and I'm very active. I would suggest that especial since you are a swimmer. Boy what a topic! :D
|
What a topic! :D
Regular tampons don't absorb a whole lot... try super or super-plus. |

I've had problems with the slim one's too...it just seems that everything just flows right pass that damn tampon. Super is the way to go...I could go through a whole box of the the regular ones in a day probably. My life is too hectic, there just isn't enough time in the day to be in the bathroom 20 times!
I'm not real big on OB but that's because my mommy raised me to be a Tampax girl :D I do like the fact that OB expands more preventing leakage. This is a little off of the subject but I have TWO friends who had never used a tampon. My sorority was having our annual sisterhood pool party during the summer. One sister finally told us why she hadn't been enjoying the pool. We broke out the tampons and explained how to use them. She went to the bathroom, had a few problems, but finally figured out how to use one. She thanked us at the end of the day...nothing like a little sisterhood bonding. My other friend still refuses, to this day, to try using a tampon. She says that they are unsanitary and will cause infection. Everytime she sees a tampon wrapper in the bathroom she comes out acting all grossed out. I'd rather see a tampon wrapper in the garbage then a used pad! I'm too old to wear a diaper!!! |

OB's are the best. The widen instead of elongate which increases protection. Since they expand horizontally, they never become uncomfortable. I will never go back to using Tampax!

MAN DANG!!!!!! I thought I could check this thread out and be like, "I can handle it" but BLAH!!!!!!!

Hrmm . . . interesting topic . . . there was a mixer on campus, and one of the ladies was giving a lap dance. It seems her applicator string became quite visible to the rest of the room during her gymnastic gyrations . . . Her Sisters mentioned it to her after . . . needless to say, that story made it around Greekdom fairly quickly . . .

I'm 26 now and to tell you the truth I can't remember the last time I bought pads. Good luck :) |
I found this on a website.
Here's How: Relax! Try not to worry about inserting the tampon right the first time. If you are tense it will make insertion harder. The best time to practice inserting a tampon is during the heavy part of your period. The tampon should glide inside your vagina easily without any discomfort. Decide if you prefer to insert the tampon standing or sitting. If sitting is your preference, sit on the toilet. If you want to try standing, putting one foot on the bathtub helps. Hold the tampon applicator in your right hand if you are right-handed, or left if left-handed. Use your thumb and middle finger to hold the bottom of the larger, outer tube. Point the tip of the applicator toward your vagina, facing slightly towards the back. The smaller tube should be pointed away from your body. Use your other hand to open your vagina. Place the tip of the applicator at the opening of your vagina. Gently push the smaller end of the applicator in until it is completely inside the larger outer tube. This pushes the tampon into your vagina and out of the tube. With your thumb and middle finger still on the outer tube, release the smaller tube and let the strings dangle freely. Gently pull the two tubes out together. Dispose of the applicator according to the manufactuer's instructions. When you are ready to remove the tampon, gently pull the withdrawl strings down and forward. The used tampon may be flushed down the toilet. Tips: Lubricating the rounded end of the tampon with a water-based lubricant such as K-Y Jelly can make insertion easier the first few times. Don't use petroleum jelly. Always read the manufactuer's instructions throughly before using any type of tampon. If the tampon feels uncomfortable it is probably not inserted far enough into your vagina. Try again with a new tampon. http://womenshealth.about.com/c/ht/0...0965684522.htm |
 I'm really getting embarrassed now... :o

But, that above forward was SOO detailed that I got a little touchy for a moment, hee hee. LOL! :D |
Pads really do feel like diapers but I just can't get with using tampons. I too have tried but it's just too uncomfortable. Now after reading about this girl's accident I wouldn't feel protected.
|
I agree...as long as you change your pad frequently, it isn't that bad to wear pads. And it is way better for those of us whose flow is IMPOSSIBLE for even the hugest mother of a tampon
|
Playtex also expands in diameter rather than lengthwise. That plus some Advil and it feels like any other day of the month :)
I've been using tampons since I was 12 and was a virgin until 20, so virginity is not the issue. You just have to relax and take your time, and make sure it's, um, "all the way in" :o |
Thanks everyone for your answers on this very personal topic! :D
I guess it's off to the drugstore I go to buy O.B.s! |
AOX81, thanks for posting that info. I didn't think it was disgusting. There are actually some teens and women out there who don't know how to properly insert a tampon. I know some of you mentioned that tampons are uncomfy which means you proabably don't have it inserted right.

I'm gonna head out and get some Midol now...oh wait, that's a whole different thread :D Have a great day :) |
Oh my God!! I just saw this in an e-mail and just had to post it.
Women of the world unite, don't sleep in a diaper tonight! |

Sorry if it that came out the wrong way. Matter of fact, I respect and admire people who are really open about stuff like that. |
I think this is a useful topic. The next time some guy PMs me with something too pushy I'll send him some of these replies. Nothing turns a guy off like Tampon talk...lol.
|
I'll have ti give it a try
I've always been a playtex girl, but after all the entries, I think I'm going to try OB next time. ;)

I gotta stick with my Super Plus tampax and the super absorb. playtex portables and gentle/slick glides. I just dont think I could do O.B's. There's just something not right to me about not having an applicator. And let me just say that Super Plus could soak up a freakin ocean and you'd be ok for hours.
Like everyone has said you just have to get use to wearing tampons. One you've popped a couple of those suckers in you barely can tell they are there. I started mine when I was 11 and used a pad until I joined the swim team in HS at 14. It was actually my male swim coach who recommended what to use. Now I only use a pad if I have ran out of tampons and didnt go to the store yet. Does any other swimmer use a pantyliner when they swim too besides a tampon? I higly recommend the Portables too. They are awesome. Just wish they came in super plus. |
Actually for those ladies that find it really uncomfortable, you may want to talk to a doctor about it:
I had a friend in middle/high school who couldn't use em and she tried every month for a year, it hurt so bad she would just cry and cry, turns out she went to the doctor and had to have a hymenectomy, where they break your hymen for you... turns out it was so close to her entry the tampon just pushed against it and stayed there. It was like having her virginity taken away without it really happening and without her hymen breaking. Talk about painful! |
I'm confused. So, the tampon breaks the hymen?
|
Tampons can break your hymen. Doing a split can break your hymen. Horseback riding can break your hymen. Many people think that they can tell if a girl is a virgin by seeing their hymen is intact. Not so. You could've broken it at age 6! It's not at all unusual.
|
I started using tampons in HS when I played soccer and have never gone back to wearing pads. It really does feel like a diaper, and I don't understand how some people can wear them, escpecially if you are very active. I mean, what a way to ruin a day at the beach! I know that OB now has one out with the applicator, for those who want to try but want the applicator. I have heard a rumor (a long time agao, don't know it it's true at all) that you shouldn't use certain brands of tampons or tampons at all because they contain a chemical that actually makes us bleed more, neccesitating the use of more tampons(manufacturing trick). I heard that the 100% cotton ones are the safest.. again, just a rumor, and I'll continue to use them until a docor tells me otherwise.

OH OH OH MY GOD! I was thinking about fixing something to eat!
I guess this was not a good time to get on this thread! OOHY GOOY time! Well I guess red meat is out tonite, Back to pot pies!:) |
