Hockey Playoffs

You are all going to hate me for this, but has anybody been watching the hockey playoffs? (i know i know sterotypical Canadian)

the Toronto Maple Leafs just rubbed out the New York Islanders to move onto the second round.

I wonder if anybody has any predictions for the final round of play. I am thinking Detroit vs Montreal fianl detroit in 6 games.

The1calledTKE 05-01-2002 12:39 AM

Sorry haven't been watching the hockey playoff. Hockey isn't that big down in the south.

CanadianTeke 05-01-2002 12:44 AM

I wouldn't expect it to be, and it is rare that any southern teams actually make it to the playoffs.

Didn't the Dallas Stars win a couple years ago?

CanadianTeke 05-01-2002 12:51 AM

yeah but other than that the furthest south it has gotten is Colorado

The1calledTKE 05-01-2002 12:58 AM

When was the last time a Canadian team won?

CanadianTeke 05-01-2002 01:06 AM

The Montreal Canadiens won their 24th cup in 1993. they are the most winningest team in history.

The1calledTKE 05-01-2002 01:52 AM

That was the last Canadian team to win?!?!? I figured hockey was Canada's sport.

CanadianTeke 05-01-2002 02:11 AM

It is; 50% of the players in the NHL are Canadian, the other 50% is the rest of the world! it is and always will be our sport! There are only 6 Canadian teams left in a 30 team league, so the odds are against Canadian teams to begin with.

The1calledTKE 05-01-2002 02:13 AM

You would figure if hockey is so popular there they would try to get more expansion teams unstead of southren cities getting them like the Atlanta Thrashers.

CanadianTeke 05-01-2002 11:45 AM

the problems that Canadian cities are to small to support NHL calibre teams. Every city has a hockey team or 2 or 3, for instance Ottawa has both the Senators which is their NHL team nad the 67's which is their OHL team. Because Canada's population is only 30 million, 1/10th of the US's, our cities are much smaller. 1/6th of Canadians lives in the Greater Toronto Area, cities like Edmonton which has a NHL team are only something like 300 000 to 500 000 people big.

The1calledTKE 05-01-2002 01:20 PM

So basically without the US the NHL would die? I think even with small cities any hockey team formed in Canada would sale out no mater the population.

CanadianTeke 05-01-2002 01:27 PM

you would think that but often the prices of tickets are expensive in order to cover players salarys as well as the exchange rate. A player for a Canadian team makes money in American $$ while a Canadian team makes thir money in Canadian $$ which is only worth abour 60 cents American. so they have to raise the price of tickets. For instance the price of a standing room seat(oxymoron??) at a Leafs game is about 28$ Canadian---to actually sit it hovers around 35$ Canadian. And even when the small maret teams do sell out they generally fall short of the money the need to keep the team.

The1calledTKE 05-01-2002 01:30 PM

That stinks. Guess the Canadians need to improve their econmy so their dollar comes closer to the American dollar. Tickets are not cheap here either because demand is usually high unless the team sucks.

CanadianTeke 05-01-2002 01:33 PM

20 years ago the Canadian $$ was worth 1.10 US---but it keeps slipping, which is good for tourism, but tends to be bad for people who actually live here. It might have something to do with the fact that our Dollar is named the looney!;)

The1calledTKE 05-01-2002 10:58 PM

To bad I live so far away from Canada... I could get my shoping done alot cheaper.lol

CanadianTeke 05-02-2002 01:12 PM

and you could get decent beer and watch good hockey:D

The1calledTKE 05-02-2002 01:26 PM

I rather have a decent beer and watch a Canadian baseball team get their ass kicked.lol

CanadianTeke 05-02-2002 05:58 PM

nobody said we were good at baseball---though last time i checked the Jays beat Atlanta in '92 :p

The1calledTKE 05-02-2002 11:49 PM

A lot of teams have beat Atlanta.lol I am not a big Atlanta fan, I think they are ok. I am a big Red Sox fan. The curse of the bambino will end this year. Go Nomar!

CanadianTeke 05-03-2002 02:28 PM

A BoSox Fan??? thats to bad. Just kiddin'! Baseball is to boring for me---i need people getting smacked into the boards and the excitment that only Hockey can bring me. What cna i say it's in the blood!

The1calledTKE 05-03-2002 11:26 PM

Those dang Canadians. Always so violent. You guys are a bad influence on the United States. lol

CanadianTeke 05-04-2002 12:03 AM

The1calledTKE 05-04-2002 11:41 AM

CanadianTeke 05-04-2002 06:22 PM

I hope you enjoyed your 2 minute race---i think i am going to go and watch my 60 minute game now.
GO LEAFS GO
;-)

NeonPi 05-04-2002 09:16 PM

FYI - Size of Canadian cities ...

"cities like Edmonton which has a NHL team are only something like 300 000 to 500 000 people big."

Edmonton's population is 937,845 (includes metro area)
Calgary's population is 860,749 (grown 21% in 10 years)

The issue (as noted before) is the Canadian vs US $ - the players get paid in US$, but the gate/merchandising is CDN $.

Go LEAFS!!! Hey at least there will be a Canadian team in the East final - yeah!! (only 44 more days til I move back to TO!!)

CanadianTeke 05-04-2002 10:39 PM

sorry i was guesstimating on the size of Edmonton.

GO LEAFS Indeed, it's time to bring the cup north of the 48!

The1calledTKE 05-05-2002 12:33 AM

Go any United States team.lol

CanadianTeke 05-05-2002 01:09 AM

It doesn't matter if an American team wins anyways---it's all Canadian players anyways!!

tkeos443 05-05-2002 01:10 AM

Today was a good day for me for my 2 minute horse race I made money have you made any money on you little hockey game.....hmmmmmmm something to think about. In the words of the NTRA "Go Baby GO"

CanadianTeke 05-05-2002 01:13 AM

Well i am in a pool---to make some money---and yes i did make money on my little hockey game----we have leagalized sports betting here---i made 50 bucks and got to see a great game---Triple Overtime between my team (The Leafs) and the team from the city i goto school in (the Senz).

tkeos443 05-05-2002 01:15 AM

50 bucks that is funny

CanadianTeke 05-05-2002 01:20 AM

50 bucks is better than no bucks---i could bet more if i had more...50 bucks on each hockey game in the playoffs could easily work out to well over 8 or 9 grand

NeonPi 05-05-2002 10:00 AM

Hey CanadianTeke ...

Neat you have a LBP quote on your signature .... did you know he's a DU from U of T? (Wm Lyon Mackenzie King (DU) and John Turner (KS) were greeks too)

GOTTA LOVE THAT OVERTIME!!

Shala

The1calledTKE 05-05-2002 01:23 PM

Yah but they still work for Americans!!

CanadianTeke 05-06-2002 12:38 PM

I highly doubt that---if anything you work for us!

The1calledTKE 05-06-2002 12:41 PM

How could Americans be working for Canadians if the American owners of the American teams are the bosses?

CanadianTeke 05-06-2002 12:47 PM

I think you are slightly confused---the men who were mentioned were all Prime ministers of Canada---sorta like your President but with a different electoral process(no we don't rely on chafs). They really have nothing to do with Hockey other than they watched alot of it!

The1calledTKE 05-06-2002 01:05 PM

nope your confused my statement was about when i said Go any United States team.lol
on the second page not about the Canadian prime ministers.lol
