BAD P.R. for ALL greeks......
Wake Forest students charged with abusing pig
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Members of a Wake Forest University fraternity were charged with animal cruelty and abandonment after a drunk, dehydrated and sunburned pig was found unconscious in a park. Wake Forest spokesman Kevin Cox said the university's dean of students is investigating and could impose fines or suspensions against the fraternity. The 23 members of Sigma Phi Epsilon could be sentenced to 90 days in jail if convicted on a misdemeanor such as animal cruelty. County officials said the fraternity members rented a picnic shelter at Tanglewood Park for a party thrown April 20 by newly initiated members in honor of more senior fraternity members. Animal-control officers were called the next morning after the nearly 200-pound pig was found in the woods by a couple walking their dog. The pig was missing its tail and was unable to stand. Park officials said the animal was drunk. "It reeked of alcohol," said Barbara Cassidy, the director of Forsyth County Animal Control. "That pig could have easily died. I don't understand how someone could think it would be fun to abuse an animal like that." The dehydrated hog had patches on its skin where it was burned while being exposed to heat lamps used as props at the party, Cassidy said. Animal control officers took the ailing animal to the county animal shelter, where it is recuperating. Sigma Phi Epsilon - Pig Story |
I am rather speechless. Assinine animal cruelty commited by a few inebriated punks is absolutely repulsive. What an embarassment.

   :(  :confused:

Those dumb fucks
Alcohol is SOOO not an excuse for that!
|
I don't think that I can use strong enough words to express how thoroughly disgusted and embarrassed I am to learn about this. I take no pleasure in having to inform my husband about the actions of these *so-called* fraternity brothers of his.
|
we try so hard to give the greek community a good name and then something stupid like this tarnishes it for all of us.
|
Almost as bad as the Donkey in the movie Bachelor Party. with Tom Hanks.
|
This is insane, and I feel horrible for the pig!
|
Talk about idiotic and reckless...what utter morons!
|
Its prpbably something they do every year but this is the first time they were caught.
|
NO SELF RESPECTING PIG WOULD WANT TO GO OUT WITH THESE ZIPPER HEADS!

i saw this online this morning, too...my boyfriend is a sig ep and i think i can say for the both of us, "way to go, guys...way to frigging represent..."
|
I think that all of us are saddened by the events that these guys did. However do you think that this would have made the front page of USAToday.com if the group had been someone other than greeks?
I tend to think not...as we all know, simply because we have chosen to create and continue our wonderful organizations we become targets. Do they threaten to shut down residence halls when someone is caught with alcohol? Of course not. Does the math club or any other club lose it's recogonition as a University approved club if one of their members were to hurt themselves after attending a club sponsored party? I'd bet it would be a cold day in hell before something like that were to happen...Another example, just happened on UNL's campus (read about it here ) where a student stabs two others with scissors after they and 2 others kicked in this student's door...Is the university doing anything about this? Nope...just handed it over to the police...do you think the same thing would have happened if it had been between two greeks? I think that perhaps we should use this opportunity to let USAToday know that we as Greeks don't appreciate being singled out. You can send comments to USAToday here . |
imagine
if one of them were surrounded by a group of pigs...
hmmmm.... mmcat:p |
That's horrible! :( What were they thinking? Or were they thinking at all? :(
|
Disgusting!!!
I emailed the paper but it said it had failures so it may not work. |
Betarulz, I'm sorry, but how can you turn this into a "they're just targeting us Greeks" incident? There are many times when it does seem Greeks are being targeted, but I think this is a little bigger than that. This behavior is UNACCEPTABLE for anyone, Greek or non-greek, and I think if it were another student organization that has to answer to the university (athletic team, perhaps) that it would be front page news.
|
who in the world would even think to torture a pig? i'm sure their energies could have been put into something more constructive and beneficial. i was really hoping the article was a joke, but apparently not. that is some sick sh**.
|
oh my goodness that is sad poor pig who would ever think of that? sigh that is why i dont drink

I think that the stabbing that occurred at my campus is a good example of the difference in coverage of greek vs non-greek incidents. If it had been fraternity members, the agressors' chapter would more than likely be under some sort of University probation, alumni may desire a membership review for the whole house, and it would be possible for the chapter to be suspended by their nationals. |
NEWS RELEASE
Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity ZOLLINGER HOUSE, Richmond, Virginia 2:00 p.m., April 30, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Craig D. Templeton, Executive Director Phone: 804-353-1901 FAX: 804-359-8160 RICHMOND, VIRGINIA...Sigma Phi Epsilon National Fraternity immediately suspended the charter and all activities of its Wake Forest University chapter pending a complete investigation of reported cruelty to animals by some members of the Wake Forest chapter. "Sigma Phi Epsilon condemns the acts being reported over the weekend from Wake Forest University," said Executive Director Craig D. Templeton. "The apparent acts of these members absolutely contradict the teachings and values of respect on which our Fraternity is based." "Our staff is cooperating completely with local authorities to investigate all aspects of this incident," Templeton said today. "It is always unfortunate when the acts of a few reflect negatively on an entire group." The investigation presently involves 20 members of the 80-man Wake Forest fraternity that is marked with grades and performance above the campus average. |
I am a big pig fan (side note: I got to touch a real pig for the first time today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - You think at a hick school Id see more... but no, went to a petting zoo) I cant see how anyone can be cruel to any animal or any human for that matter.....
I cant even kill bugs.... |
I can't believe that people would out rightly do that to a helpless animal. Honestly, there are no words to say how I feel about this...
|
Sometimes it just makes me wonder, Where do people come up with these brillant ideas ?!!!
|
(I hate to rehash this thread..but...)
I don't think it makes a difference that the people who did this were Greek, in the way the case was publicized. Something like this would have been written up somewhere no matter who the perps were, at least AP would have covered it, if not USA Today. As for campus crimes, our local and university papers cover attacks extensively, regardless of whether they were committed by a member of a Greek organization or another person. And there have been a lot of attacks going on lately, for varying reasons (mostly biased) :( Also, if one or two members of a Greek group did something, I don't imagine that the entire chapter would be ostracized and their charter reviewed/revoked. This situation involved nearly, if not the entire, fraternity, from my understanding. If any group, be it the band or the honor society, or whatever, all got together and did something cruel/inhumane and/or illegal, I strongly think the group would be punished as severely as this fraternity. As for the pig.. WAHHHHHHHHHH.. pigs are my favourite animals, and I'm a huge animal lover/animal welfare advocate :( Adri |
What a bunch of A$$holes they are!! I hope that someone puts the smackdown on them!
|
Pull their charter and kick their asses off campus. Simple as that. Anyone who does stuff like that, one shows lack of intelligence and maturity, and also ruines the whole greek system for the rest of us. People like that deserve to be in jail..A def. alot longer than 90 days
|
I agree with Adri. If a sports team had all gotten together and done this as a group-sponsored activity, they would have gotten a beat-down from the university, they might have been suspened from intercollegiate competition, and the wire services would have picked it up.

Poor little piggy. :(
It reminds me of that scene in "Deliverence" with Ned Beatty and they make him squeal like a pig. Or maybe "Lord of the Flies" and the pig hunt and the boy called Piggy. |
DUMB!!! DUMB!!! DUMB!!!
I hope those pathectic excuses for men lose their charter!! It is completely unacceptable to abuse an animal of any kind. DUMB!!! DUMB!!! DUMB!!!    |
ohhh my god... i feel so bad for the poor little pig.. some people are SO stupid.. of course now its not " the brothers at so and so college did this" its Sigma Phi Epsilon did it... good luck to all the innocent brothers avenging their good names

Similar Problem
Our house ha a similar problem in 1989. There was no mistreating of the animal though. I guess it was just "agitated". Or least thats what was written in the Seattle Times. And we chose a sheep. Not to say that I am condoning this in any way at all cause I don't. To put it this way... We lost our charter from nationals and had to start over. Probably the best thing for us. Thats what should happen to them. There done for.
