Best States
As I get closer to graduation, I'm looking to head out somewhere else and try something new. Since we are all pretty scattered around the country, I want to know what some of the best places to live are in the country and what makes them so special....?
|
I live in KY and there are a lot of reasons I would never live anywhere else.
First, you get to see all the seasons very distinctively. Like when you are a kid and you see a picure representing the seasons, they could have been taken in KY. Also, there is a lot of beautiful land here. KY has more navigable waterways than any state in the US. There are lakes and rivers that you can go to anytime and enjoy, which is almost as fun as the beach! We have a lot of history. I was born and raised in the northern part of KY in Louisville and now I go to school in the almost most southern part of KY in Bowling Green. There is such a change in traditions just by passingover the mason dixon line that runs through the middle of our state. The people here are friendly. Louisville was voted the city most likely to give a stranger change for a dollar and KY has the best rest areas in the US according to AAA. I love living here because if you want to go party, there are plenty of places to do that, if you want to relax, people in the south don't get into the hustle and bustle of life, we like to enjoy ourselves. And, according to my friends from NY, Wisconsin and Michigan we have more beautiful women per capita than any place they have ever been. HAHAHA!! Too bad I can't say the same for the men! I don't think I would ever want to live anywhere else. I plan on raising my family here someday, whenever I have one. |
South Louisiana (and I mean New Orleans and its 'burbs, Baton Rouge is a nasty rural cow-town craphole) is nice for a few reasons:
1.) Its very easy to be smart here. There's so much ignorance, and just plain stupidity, you don't have to try very hard to be good at what you do. 2.) The scenery. Its absolutely beautiful in the New Orleans area, especially on the Northshore - lots of trees, rivers, lakes. 3.) Its a fun place to live. Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, and a host of other festivals make it tons of fun. Plus, a lot of the people are just really fun - we like to have a good time. |
Boston is awesome. I miss Boston.
NYC is also awesome, but the cost of living is phenomenally high. I live in Connecticut... nice place if you like peace and quiet and don't mind deer and wild turkeys running around in your backyard. I'm within shouting distance of NYC, too, which is a plus. Again, though, the cost of living is pretty high. |
Annapolis, Maryland is a great place to live. We have the distinct seasons, but the winter is never especially brutal. We're an hour from Baltimore as well as D.C. and an hour and a half from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware or, if you're more adventurous, Ocean City, Maryland.
Lots of good shopping! If you're into boating, there's no place better to live in my opinion. Moderate cost of living unless you live right on the water. Good economy. Friendly people. Can you tell I love it here? Close runner-up is Portland, Maine, where my oldest daughter was born. It is the perfect miniature of a bigger city with the sports, culture, shopping, good restaurants, ect...but not the crime and high prices. It is unbelievably cheap up there! Right before my husband got transferred down here to Maryland we were about to close on a 3 bedroom home with hardwood floors, two car garage, enclosed porch, french doors in all the downstairs rooms, stained glass in the windows and within walking distance of the beach for $89,000  Good luck in your search! |
Well, what kind of place are you looking for?
I'm living in Seattle and I love it. It's a great place if you like the outdoors (no snow in winter, mild sunny summers, hiking and kayaking and the ocean and camping and skiing all very close by). But if you want people who know how to dress and really happening night life, well, don't move to Seattle. People around here, when they want to dress up, they put on their "good" fleece jacket. And it's a very unfriendly city to outsiders. Not rude, just impenetrable. Everyone I know around here is a recent arrival; locals stick together. |
I read the thread pretty quickly, but I think I've been to everywhere mentioned at least once. We've lived in Ohio, Maryland, Wisconsin and Michigan. Have also been to many other places on business or vacations.
All have good points. Among all, though, I like Denver where we've lived for the past 20 years. |
nebraska!!!! more specifically omaha. some people complain about it, but omaha has everything you need. its a really nice place to live and a lot is happening in the city. id rather live here than places like los angeles or new york.
|
Definitely not Ohio...see thread titled "Why does Ohio suck?"
|
New York is a great state! New York City is expensive, but you get what you pay for. Actually there are neighborhoods outside of Manhattan that are less expensive.
|
Hi everyone.... I'm a long time reader, first time poster here on GC! I currently live in Connecticut and love it. Like AEPhialum said, its a quick drive down to NYC and a few hours to Boston. Gotta agree that the cost of living can be outrageous in places, though. Otherwise, there is some beautiful scenery, nice beaches, and fun hotspots :)

Austin is awesome
Hootie, I have to disagree (:))as most of my friends own there own house and I own my condo. I love Texas and cannot imagine living anywhere else. I did not like San Antonio where I grew up but Austin is awesome. I hate cold weather and we don't have much of a winter usually which is just fine with me. Austin is beautiful-we have nice parks, lake and the music scene (music capital of the world is our motto). I have to admit though it can be expensive and pay is lower here for some industries. People are so friendly here and you don't have to dress up to go out like in Dallas or Houston. It is a very casual city.

Hawaii. Paradise is my backyard. Paradise isn't necessarily the weather...nor is it the scenery. It's the aloha you feel every day. 'Nuff said.

Totally chicago (illinois if youre talking states, haha) is the place to be... for younger adults - the northside is the place to be - so much going on there - you have one of the biggest cities in the US and all of it's perks at your fingertips - chicago is a gorgeous gorgeous city and there is so much to do - lake michigan is right there, youre an hour away from michigan, indiana, and wisconsin - chicago has those great midwest values, awesome food, great people, lots of sports - however, if youre used to year-round warm weather, i would stay away from chicago or anywhere up north. i love this city though...

Chicago is very cool
Too bad this is just about states because Ontario is better than any state listed so far. |
whats up hootie?!?! I agree with hootie, nebraska rocks for all the reasons she said. she explained it much better than i did!

AUSTIN, TX
AggieAXO, I completely agree with you. I was born and raised in Austin, THE LIVE MUSIC CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. I live in san antonio now, but i go back home like every weekend. I just can't seem to get enough of great bands playing all over 6th street. Everyone is mellow, we Austinites don't get all psycho when we see movie stars, we just let them do their thing. I mean hey, they are people too. Then there's town lake where I learned to row.....ahh, i can almost feel the mist coming up from the water at my 6am practice, the best feeling in the world. So peaceful and beautiful to row down town lake and see the water glisten and then look up and see the downtown buildings. Its not too big, yet not small either. Its perfect. After I graduate from St. Mary's, I know for a fact I will move back to A-town, its the place to be.

As much as I complain about Michigan, it's a pretty decent state. Lots of good schools, the lakes in the summer...the UP is also very beautiful and peaceful. I love watching the seasons change, it's just that in Michigan the weather change is weekly/daily!

If I didn't live in New Orleans, I'd need to live near a beach. |

I have to say NC rocks. I love it hear and do not plan on moving...unless I win the lottery and move to my own island.
We can go to the beach or the mountains within a few hours, have great shopping and tons of colleges that gives us tons of social events for games and fun... It isn't too cold but can get rather warm...good beach times! |
CALIFORNIA!!!! Ski, surf, hike--all in your backyard. The cost of living is HIGH, which is the big drawback, but I can't imagine living anywhere else...
If I did though, I'd consider Northern Virginia Texas Arizona Las Vegas--my hometown. |
Kansas City is kind of a fun place to live, and low cost of living - although I've grown tired of it after four years.
Stay the heck away from Oklahoma - bad weather, bad scenery, bad... everything. |
Texas rocks. I am moving in a month and a half and I am literally about to cry just thinking about it. If you come to TX, chances are you will never want to leave. It has just about every kind of terrain from coastline, to plains, to mountains, there's a ton to do, there are jobs in just about every industry available, the food is good, the people are friendly, the weather is usually warm. There is no place like Texas! It's practically its own country!
|
Florida! Hands down!! I love have the beach near by. I love the mild winters. The summers get pretty hot, but that's what the beach is for! It's always sunny and bright here. There's tons of stuff to do, from Disney, to Universal, to Bush Gardens. Never a boring moment! There's also tons of places here that are good cities to raise familes. You get it all!
|
Obviously Cali!! I love travelling, but there's nothing like going back to my home state. I've never once considered living anywhere else :).
My favorites in Cali? Cities: Los Angeles and San Fran (tho San Fran is on the cold side compared to SoCal beach weather) Towns: Sausalito, Carmel, Tiburon, Marin (these are in NorCal and are absolutely beautiful...complete with white sand beaches and charming dollhouse-like residences and old-fashioned shopping malls. So cute!). Atherton, Palo Alto (these two are near Stanford University). Hillsborough (20 or 30 minutes from San Fran). These are some of the most expensive places to live in ALL of America though. My fave SoCal towns: Laguna Beach, Newport Beach You can't go wrong with any of these areas I listed! :D We Californians just love it here! It is well worth the cost (CA is the most expensive state to live in). Hey, actually, if we were ever to drift off and form our own country...we'd be perfectly fine. (We're the 5th largest economy in the WORLD.) Which other state in the US can you say THAT about? :D |
CT is by far the best place to live...close enough to the city but far enough away...and most of it is gorgeous:D
|
Chicago: I grew up there, and I like to quote the song from the Disney movie "Aladdin": It's barbaric, but hey, it's home. It is a great city, so much art and culture and great food. I do miss it.
But I have to confess, my favorite city is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If you've never been there you probably think it's the armpit of the nation, but it's a wonderful place to live. It's clean, the people are nice, there are museums and a symphony and sports and the best pizza anywhere in the world (Fuel and Fuddle)...and you KNOW I know my pizza, being a Chicagoan. :)It's also very cheap to live there. I love Pennsylvania in general..KStarboy's family lives in eastern PA and it's really pretty. Thumbs down to southern California. Sorry, but I hate it here. I miss the seasons and I can't afford to live here and the people are rude a lot of the time. I also can't stand driving, and you can't get around out here without a car. I know lots of people love it, but it's just not me at all. |
This is some good stuff here, you can tell everyones a little biased of their state, as they should be. For me I can't stand the cold weather, so i'm going to stick to probably either Cali(were I live now) or Texas(were I grew up). Both are great places to live but totally different in every way. I could write an essay on the pros and cons of the two....
|
I love Seattle Washington! It is a wonderful place I lived there for 8 years. I live in Ohio now and it is very boring but W.P.A.F.B. has many jobs to offer in many fields of study. I have been working there since I was a jr in high school. Florida is a greart place too but a job can be hard to find. The weather is great for tanning! ;)
|
my kind of town
Here's another vote for Chicago! What everyone's said so far is true - the culture and food are awesome, the people are down-to-earth and friendly, the city is beautiful (plus easy to navigate with lots of great neighborhoods), and the weather...well, the weather isn't one of our strong points. :) Don't let a little wind chill keep you away, though!
|
I Gotta agree with Newbie here CALI is THE place to be. All of the places she mentioned are wonderful.. PALO ALTO is my hometown.. Atherton is right next door.. the whole palo alto menlo park, atherton area is beautiful.. I believe all three are tree city USA designates... which means they have A LOT of trees everywhere... the weather is nice most of the time.. sorry for those of you who like the changing of the seasons... but I mean... who really enjoys shoveling snow off their car at 6 am or un freezing the water pipes or any of that stuff ? The good thing is snow is close by it's only a 3-4 hour drive to tahoes from the bay area... and in most SO cal areas it's about the same to big bear if you really want to experience the season changing thing...Let's see what else rocks about California ?? the people here are VERY diverse and open minded.. you're always likely to meet someone who will open your mind to something new. Down south I'd have to say my fav cities include Palos Verdes, Malibu, New Port, and Tustin. As Newbie mentioned though.. the cost of living here in cali is VERY VERY VERY VERY high... actually the second richest person in the world.. (Larry Ellison from Oracle, second to Bill Gates) lives in Atherton... but as someone said about NYC you get what you pay for. :D

It would really depend on what you are looking for. There are things in my life that are important to me that are affected by politics. If I were to move to California I would be arrested as a felon because of the difference in the laws in Ca. and Tx. Ca. tends to be politically liberal, with high state income tax (9%), high outlays for welfare, and 'over' regulation (if you send a sleeping bag to Ca. for a zipper repair you will be charged for dry cleaning before any work is done. It is the law.) If you like that environment, many do or they wouldn't live there, you might find places like NYC, Boston, northern NJ, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans, D.C., Ct., and some areas of Colorado, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington to your liking. If you are wanting to get away from taxes and prefer a good climate places like Texas, Tenn., or Florida might appeal to you. If you snow ski, Arizona would probably not be a good choice. If you are into SCUBA diving I wouldn't suggest Montana. Motorcycles are not big in ND or Mn. If you like snowmobiles avoid Florida. It all just depends on what you like to do and what you are looking for.

I left my heart...in San Francisco...the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Cable Cars, Great Restaurants, Haight/Ashbury, Cal Berkeley, Stanford, the SF 49'ers, the SF Giants, the Oakland A's, the Oakland Raiders (Just Win, Baby!), Monterrey, Carmel, Marin... Not to even mention the diversity that you find here, which is what life is about! I could go on and on. Hell, even the earthquakes are interesting! The cost of living is high, but so are the rewards, and there is much more open space than in New York. If you want the experience of a truly great area (Conde Nast Magazine always calls it the best place in the world), Go West, Young Man (thank you Horace Greeley, and the Village People) ;)

I have to say that those are some of the most ignorant statements that I have ever read. You should be ashamed of yourself.

As for myself...I think Louisiana is a great place. There is so much history and culture here in Louisiana. There are so many beautiful and wonderful areas to visit. New Orleans may be the most well-known place in Louisiana...but there are definitely hundreds of hidden treasures all around Louisiana. Not to mention that the food and people here make it all worthwhile. That's my .02 |
And I would also have to argue that Slidell is not the most urban or cultured city in Southern Louisiana.

Well out of the places I have lived I have to say that Tennessee is my favorite. It is not the most exciting place ever but it is a very beautiful state. People are so nice there, it is much different than where I live now, Maryland. Tennessee also has Nashville, people think that is it only for country music but it has so much more. I am planning to move to Tennesse when I graduate. Also Kentucky is very beautiful too and people are really nice. But I haven't lived here long enough to really now. And Maryland...well let's just say it isn't my favorite place.:(
