Why does Ohio suck?

Question of the day:

Why does Ohio suck? I have lived here for almost a year and a half and I have found nothing good to do within driving distance...

confusedgrl83 04-30-2002 11:35 AM

That's why I moved away in the first place...... :) what part of Ohio AOX81?!?!?

FuzzieAlum 04-30-2002 11:55 AM

I love Ohio! I'd go back if I could get a job there.

AOX81 04-30-2002 01:12 PM

I live just outside of Mansfield.

juniorgrrl 04-30-2002 01:18 PM

I'm 99.9% sure its because its north of the Mason-Dixon line

:)

KABillyMac 04-30-2002 02:41 PM

Well said. I am a firm believer in toll booths all along the ohio river so we can charge the buckeyes when they come and invade us on the weekends. Dont yall have any water in that state that you guys can go to?

confusedgrl83 04-30-2002 04:00 PM

Mansfield? That's why.... There is nothing wrong with Ohio.. but after 18 years there.. it's time to leave

AOX81 04-30-2002 04:29 PM

I spent my first 24 years in Michigan...mental note to self, ditch husband, move back...JUST KIDDING!

AGDPrincess70 04-30-2002 05:09 PM

This thread reminds me of a joke that one of my sisters told me the other day...

Why is Michigan shaped like a hand?

So it can reach down and bitch-slap Ohio

Okay, that's all I wanted! :)

DeltAlum 04-30-2002 06:23 PM

Hey! Be nice. I grew up and went to college in Ohio. It's a lot better than most of the places I've lived since.

Your problem ain't Ohio -- It's Mansfield. Not a whole lot around there.

Tom Earp 04-30-2002 06:28 PM

Round on the ends and HI HI in the Middle!:D

Well at least Texas got BOBBY:D

AlphaGam1019 04-30-2002 06:41 PM

I have to say that "Cleveburg" weather is horrible. Growing up in the South, it was quite a shock to have heavy snow in October through May.

On a positive note, "University Circle" in Cleveland is so wonderfully rich in culture- it has Severance Hall (home of the Cleveland Orchestra, one of the top orchestras in the world), Museum of Art, Museum of Natural History as well as Case Western Reserve University all in the same area. I would love to visit the area again one day!

33girl 04-30-2002 07:57 PM

As a Pittsburgh resident, I am obliged by city, county and state laws to say: Cleveland. ;)

FuzzieAlum 04-30-2002 08:11 PM

Heyyyy! I object! Now Pittsburgh, well, just look at it's name!
:D

Haha! That is hilarious!!!:D:D Love it AGDPrincess!:)

TriDeltaGal 05-01-2002 03:17 AM

AGD Princess,
I agree that joke was hilarious, and all the way out here in California!
On that note...It's all about sunny Southern California, where you can always find something to do and everything is only twenty minutes away on the 10, the 405, the 101 or the 605!! Born and raised here and loved it so much, had to stay here for school and you can't beat the fact that you can see movie stars walking down the street (P.S. Saw Tobey Maguire at the Spiderman premiere on Monday here in Westwood. Can I tell you how cute he is in real life!)
AOX81, move out here, we would love to have you!

HeidiHo 05-01-2002 01:54 PM

Maybe you should head southwest. Cincinnati happens to kick butt.

Yay for the props to University Circle and CWRU!!
Just don't go east on Euclid!

AchtungBaby80 05-01-2002 05:56 PM

My sister has never had very nice things to say about Ohio, but I don't think it's all *that* bad...just in certain places. The place where my boyfriend is has got to be the most godforsaken place in the state--it's out in the middle of nowhere, and the college is dead (and I mean dead) on the weekends. Coming from a larger state university, this is so weird to me! The best party I ever went to up there had about 30 people at it, which is evidently HUGE by their standards. :) But hey, at least there are a few bars around, so I guess it could be a lot worse.

DeltaZeecutie 05-01-2002 10:26 PM

I like Ohio. I've lived here all my life. I'm from Cincy which is awesome and I go to college at Ohio State. I love the parties! There are so many people there. But I definately want to move. I hate the weather here. I wanna go to NYC or LA for career reasons!

DeltAlum 05-02-2002 12:06 AM

OK, OK.

I've held off as long as I can.

I've always heard that outer space is a vacuum because Michigan sucks.

And I used to live there. I also lived in Milwaukee, which is on the other shore of Lake Wisconsin.

So leave Ohio alone.

AOX81 05-02-2002 09:02 AM

AGDPrincess70:
You are hilarious! I told all of my friends in Michigan that joke and they laughed their asses off :D

TriDeltaGal:
I'd love to move to beautiful Southern California but it looks like we may be on our way to Shreveport, Louisiana.

DeeZeecutie:
Hey if there is anything interesting going on in Columbus please let me know. I work in Mt. Vernon so I'm not that far away. I need a little frigging excitement in my life. The last time that I actually went out and had fun was on New Year's Eve...we went to the Brickyard and had a really good time! Oh yeah, by the way, how is Lambda Chi Alpha down there...my husband is a Lambda Chi.

Ohio still sucks. I guess it's because ALL of my friends and family live in Michigan and I hardly ever get to see them. Do you know how hard it is to make new friends in a new area where there is nothing to do. Everyone I live around is either in high school or has gray hair. :(

I'm sorry. Shreve is like all the disadvantages of Arkansas and Texas (VERY VERY country) but none of the benefits. The best thing about it is its 6hrs away from Dallas.

UDZETA 05-02-2002 10:52 AM

I was born in Dayton, Ohio and moved to Seattle Washington for 8 years. Then my mother thought it would be a good idea to move back. I have been back in Ohio for six or seven years now. I really don't like this place! It is soooooooooooooo boring!!!!!!! I need to move to a place like Florida or Washington someplace that has stuff to do. ;)

DeltAlum 05-02-2002 11:42 AM

Ok, seriously we actually liked Michigan while we lived in Detroit.

We moved away from Ohio in 1974, but here are some things to do there off the top of my head...

First of all, Mansfield isn't the garden spot of the midwest, but the good news is that, even though it has a huge population, Ohio is not very big area wise. There really isn't anything you can't drive to in a couple of hours.

Besides the stuff mentioned above in Cleveland, there's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which is pretty neat. There's a concert location -- I think it's called Blossom there also.

The Lake Erie shoreline offers a lot of fun stuff -- especially if you like watersports. There's also camping right on the lake at Gem Beach and East Harbor. There are also lots of neat little towns to visit like Marblehead.

Like amusement parks? Cedar Point at Sandusky is considered THE roller coaster park. They have something like 18 of them. It's listed as one of the top fifteen parks in the country. They also have entertainment like the other major parks (Disney, etc.) It's a very clean park right on the lakefront at Sandusky. They also have a Seaworld type dolphin and seal show right at the park. Kings Island near Cincinnati is another good amusement park.

Camping? Ohio has an excellent state park system. If you're past the tent stage, most of them have nice cabins and lodges at moderate prices.

Columbus offers a lot of benefits on the Ohio State campus like the Wexner Art Gallery. Or try The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) downtown. Catch a Broadway touring company at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. How about a rock concert at Polaris Amphetheatre or shopping at the new mall near it with all the major department stores (I don't know the name). Take a walk around German Village with all of it's restaurants and shops. Columbus also has professional soccer and hockey teams as well as OSU sports.

Cincinnati, a little farther away also offers professional sports (I think the Bengals are still considered professional). It also offers some excellent cultural opportunities.

North Central Ohio, where you are is pretty flat, but there are some beautiful driving trips -- especially in Spring and Fall -- down through Southeast Ohio in the Hocking River Valley. Take a walk around my Alma Mater, Ohio University. It's the oldest university in the original Northwest Territory, chartered in 1787 and founded in 1804. The Georgian buildings are beautiful, as is the campus. Athens is the prototypical town. The Fall colors are spectacular.

If you're into smaller, but still competitive college sports, Ohio has several Mid American Conference teams, including Ohio U., Miami of Ohio, Kent State, Bowling Green State Unviersity, Akron University and the University of Toledo. There are also a ton of small, highly regarded liberal arts colleges such as Otterbein, Oberlin and Wittenberg with all of the opportunities they offer.

The US Air Force has a major museum open to the public at Wright Patterson AFB at Dayton.

You are within a half hours drive of one of the finest road tracks for sportscar and motorcycle racing in the country -- the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course outside Mansfield.

Again, that's off the top of my head, and there must be a lot of other stuff since I've lived there.

Good luck. Have a good time.

AOX81 05-02-2002 12:31 PM

Thanks for all of your suggestions!

This is part of my problem...me and my husband usually do not have a couple of ours to drive somewhere. He works long hours and I do not have anyone to go places with me if he is working.

I've been up to Cleveland once to hit a few bars for a bachelorette party but I haven't been back in a year. I'd like to go so the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but my husband doesn't have much interest in Cleveland besides the Indians.

We usually go camping four times a year...in Celina, OH, Sterling, MI, Mt. Pleasant, MI, and in Canada. If it rains one more time when we go camping my husband will never want to go again. I'm more of the outdoorsy type, he'd rather stay at a hotel.

Where I lived in Michigan was approximately 3 hours away from Cedar Point so I've been there dozen of times. I remember going there 3 times in one summer. My husband hates roller coasters and when we went last year with one of his high school friends my husband sat on a bench ALL day! I've also been to Kings Island with my aunt and uncle but there is no point in going since my hubby is a bench warmer.

Since I've been in Ohio I can probably count the number of times that I have been to Columbus on one hand. Been tailgating and to a couple of bars..that's about it. Wow, what an exciting life I lead.

I've been to the Air Force base museum.

I live within two minutes of Mid Ohio...I live on the same road! I enjoy the races but not the traffic that keeps me blocked in my driveway. Looking forward to Vintage Bike Weekend and Superbike Weekend :)

Bored out of my mind in Ohio :(

UDZETA 05-02-2002 01:44 PM

AOX81, I try to keep myself busy that tends to keep me from remembering how boring Ohio really is. I work at W.P.A.F.B and I am involved in a lot of activities that keep me busy. Get involved with a soup kicten or work with the college campus that has your GLO. Start a new hobby or get a group of your lady friends together to go camping or go to some of the parks. Good Luck! ( you could come visit me in Dayton!) :)

AOX81 05-02-2002 02:00 PM

My sorority is local so I can't really do anything at any nearby campuses. :(

I don't have any close friends down here. Most of the people I know are people that went to high school with my husband. I've hung out with them a few times but I'm not really comfortable around them...It's probably because they have all known each other forever! What can I say, I suck!

One of my sorority sisters lives in Vandalia. She just moved down here within the last year or so and she is having the same problem adjusting that I am. I've only been able to meet up with her once because she leads a pretty busy life. Maybe we can all get together and go out or something. Any good places to go in Dayton??

Fuzzie906 05-02-2002 02:02 PM

Ohio

Ok well this subject is rather amusing cause I ask myself this everyday.... Originally from northeastern ohio I miss it now in Northwestern ohio... well that's why people think ohio is nothing but cornfields... Ohio is the heart of it all.... and ask around almost EVERYONE knows someone from Ohio... it's like the six degrees of speration from kevin bacon type of stuff mansfield isn't too bad of a drive from cuyahoga falls get up there and head out to rockin on the river it's a BLAST and the firemen are hot that work at it :o)

UDZETA 05-02-2002 02:33 PM

AOX81, Dayton is not the best place in Ohio to put it mildly. We have a couple of good clubs, a baseball stadium, some nice bars(not only for drunking but for listening to some good music), and Dayton is trying really hard to clean up the area with river scape. River scape is a place outside next to the river, where bands can have a concert, there's ice skating in the winter, biking and boating in the summer. Also laser light shows that are kinda neat. The Air Force Base and IMAX are also in the area. All the fairs in the summer and fall months, the Victoria theatre (they always have the best shows). The unversity of Dayton's ghetto (my favorite place). The ghetto is the student housing area right next to the campus. There have been lots of good times there! Dayton is not much better then any other Ohio city :)

Cleveland is the best location in Ohio. I have live here all my life and I attend Cleveland State. There's nothing wrong about going east on Euclid. It's no better than going toward stokes blvd or chester road. It just takes you where you need to go.:p

FuzzieAlum 05-02-2002 03:28 PM

We used to say at CWRU that you couldn't go east if you were white, couldn't go south if you weren't white, and there was no point in going west unless you were just going to Tower City or the Flats anyway! (I don't know what happened if you went north.)

AOX81 05-02-2002 04:23 PM

Hey sigtau305 and FuzzieAlum,

There is a bar in the Flats and I have been trying to remember the name of it. I think it was next to a restaurant/bar called Dick's and it had a bar on the roof. I have only been to Cleveland once and I was so butt ass wasted I have no idea what the name of that place is. We only made it to two bars that night but I barely remember the cab ride back to the hotel.

It might have been called the Beach????

Thanks

DeltAlum 05-02-2002 05:05 PM

FuzzieAlum,

If you go too far North, you get your feet real wet.

It was probably BeachClub, It's very popular and tons of fun. The flats in Cleveland are a lot of fun, but for most of the places it's better to be 21, especially since you can't get in if you're not.

FuzzieAlum 05-02-2002 05:27 PM

Pinkangel, I keep hearing from my friends that the warehouse district has "replaced" the flats, and when I go back into town, that's where they take me. Is that true in general, or are my friends just weird?

pinkangel 05-02-2002 05:31 PM

No, the wharehouse district is definitely growing. It has a more sophisticated (expensive) reputation though. It attracts less young college students and high schoolers. But it is working to replace the flats.
