lack of a mascot
Hey, I'm an SAI from the Epsilon Gamma chapter at ASU. I was just wondering, why doesn't SAI have a mascot, anyways? Every other GLO in the world has one. I think it would be awesome if we had one!
Our chapter president is even thinking of submitting a petition for an SAI mascot. I was just curious what other sisters had to say. And just curious, but what does anyone think would make a good mascot? Love and roses, SAIrose |
Maybe a ladybug...I dunno. What sings? I am not in favor of any birds because they creep me out!
|
There was discussion on the national listserv about this a looooong time ago (maybe 5-6 years ago?). It wasn't formally petitioned or anything, but some people said they felt that just having a rose was enough, and some others (mostly alumnae) said they felt having a mascot was not in keeping with our "professional" image...
As far as ladybugs go, I believe that's Alpha Sigma Alpha's mascot, so they probably wouldn't appreciate it if we borrowed theirs. :) |
lemme check...
|
yeah, it is...what else could it be? what is musical?
|
a songbird.
|
birds creep me out though...eek!
|
Mascot
Bird creep you out? One too many Hitchcock movies?;) That really would be a tough one to decide, but I don't think that us having a mascot would in any way harm our "professional" image. What do y'all think?

It's cute and fun, so why not? Something musical, something red, something white, it doesn't matter. It should be something that is easy to find though so that people can buy the stuff.

idea!
How about a swan??
|
Like a trumpeter swan? :) Cute idea - swans are loyal, protective, beautiful, and graceful (in addition to being white, one of our colors).
|
another idea
How about an angel? Think about it...they're usually dressed in white (one of our colors), they sing, they're not birds, and they're often vessels of inspiration. There could even be some kind of cute little saying of explanation for it like "Sisters are Angels of Inspiration".
|
If we are concerned about repeating someone else's mascot, we can't do the angel. That belongs to Pi Phi.
|
Ok!
Well shoot...I had forgotten all about that. I even used to think Pi Phi was cool 'cause of their mascot. My mother used to be a big angel freak and had a wall full of all sort of angel memorabilia. Well, then I vote for my original answer, the swan (or trumpeter swan, as it were). By the way, I love how some of y'all have signatures w/letters (and even in the right colors). How do you get your signature to do that? It's way cool.

Do any chapters have local mascots?
|
local mascots
Well, yes and no. We hosted Province Weekend last year and our t-shirts had an elephant (since we are the Crimson Tide) holding red roses. But as far as "officially" no, we don't have a mascot. I like the elephant though...

My college has just recently concluded our Greek Week this year, and Y was a part of the festivities (not much, but existant), asked to present a Greek god or goddess to represent us in the "Battle for Olympus." After much discussion and realizing that Apollo was an essential for Tau Kappa Epsilon, we settled on Polhymnia.
I always thought that our symbol was, aside from our crest, badge and red and white roses, the pan pipes. If you're talking mascot, well, I gave thought to Pan himself. Granted, his reputation is not the greatest, and that's the downside, but if we were to find anything to personify, we had a musician or Pan armed with pipes. The college team is the Prairie Fire, but the unofficial symbol of the place, to some, has been one of the squirrel militia we seem to harbor on campus. I guess that might work for Psi Chapter. |
I think that because we are professional, and not social, therefore we are not a member of the NPC, repeating someone else's mascot is really not a huge issue. Lots of things are repeated in several sororities. i agree, that a bird is maybe not the best choice, one b/c i think they are gross, but also b.c they are hard to find. there are not many stuffed animals that are cute birds. a swan would almost work, except that we would never be able to find anything with a swan on it, and they are not easily drawn, etc.
The best thing might be to just adopt a local mascot for your individual chapter, but i don't know if that has to be ok'd by nationals. |
Hmph this is my second time trying to reply. Anyways . . .
I think it would be neat to have a mascot. This subject is being discussed on the ListServ at the moment so I thought I'd bring it back up here. I agree with someone on the listserve and think that a songbird such as "Robin "Red" Breast" would be cute! Just my $.02! Love and Roses, Jessica |
I like the swan idea. Not that Zeta's mascot of a koala is any easier to find and or draw. At least, I think they are a koala. That's what my Zeta friend is always looking for.
A swan does sum us up nicely. ~Emma |
