Line Names

Hi SoRHOrs and Friends,

I am new to the site-- but I am hooked already! :D

I have a situation I want your opinions on: Here is the deal there is a certain sorority that just had a line of girls cross, and their names are HORRIBLE  !!! They had the nerve to name one girl after a fabric. (And no, it isn't SILK!) Here is my question: What would you do if you had gotten such a terrible name? (Did I mention the ship name was a word that means Mistake?) Have you ever encountered someone with a name that just made you shake your head with pity?

:) HoneyBee1922

Fine RHOyalty 04-27-2002 03:02 AM

LOL!

Yes I have... numerous times. It's up to you what you wanna name your "children" but my goodness, please put some thought into it. I wouldn't want my mother to see my sorority jacket if my name was something derogitory (sp?) or something that suggested drugs/promiscuity, etc.

That's what I try to do with my baby turtles. Before I chose their name, I thought "how would their parents feel if their daughter told them about their line name?" That's just a personal rule of thumb I try to follow.

RHOyal-Silence 04-27-2002 04:51 PM

i know exactly what you are saying

i have met some greek brothers and sisters with names that makes you wonder "what did they do to deserve this ? "

i have met someone with a name of a certain smelly food, and to me that was the worst.

i understand that line names carry a special meaning, but come on!!!

EntycinglyBleu 04-29-2002 02:47 PM

LOL

soRHOR, I feel ya!!!!

Like everyone is stating, I know that your name has meaning, but please be considerate.

Ex. I do know someone's whose line name is Doo-Doo Brown:eek:

Why would you want to put that on your jacket? To make it so bad, she did!!!

RHOyalty 22 04-30-2002 02:52 PM

Try this on for size!

I can bet that!!

This particular sorority at my school had a line where there was one girl that they didn't like, but she was a legacy so I guess they had to let her in (I'm not quite sure about this particular sorority's legacy guidelines). Anyway when they came out (in a club of all places!) They announced her as "She get's it from her moma"! When I heard that story I thought that I would never stop laughing!!

Okay, why did you just make me choke on my lemonade??? That is a mess.

prettypoodle6 04-30-2002 06:56 PM

whew

im so glad we dont have a legacy clause (knock on wood)

that was funny!

HaDoKen 04-30-2002 07:38 PM

uh oh...

Then I had better not say me and my lines name :o

SeriousSigma22 04-30-2002 08:30 PM

Sorhors,

Very interesting! Very interesting! That's just another reason to be very careful when you are thinking about joining a particular organization. If they have a history of giving their future sisters and brothers inappropriate names that would make me think twice about how they value me as a future member of their organization.

Serioussigma22:cool:

HoneyBee1922 05-01-2002 02:11 AM

"...From her Momma"? LOL! Maybe I should spread the word to Spandex that it could be worse.
I stand corrected.

DOVE1920 05-01-2002 11:27 AM

I had to add these to the list:

Tarnished Pearl
Molasses

UNIQUE97 05-01-2002 11:41 AM

I got one.......get ready it's a doozey!!

Sorhors .... Listen up because this is to horrible too say twice.....

BLACK B@ST&RD (they spelled it the correct way)!!! I actually saw this "line name" on the back of a newly initiated member of a divine nine fraternity!!! I felt ashamed for him.   :(

SeriousSigma22 05-01-2002 06:36 PM

Sorhors and sisterfriends,

Folks really need to check out what they want to affiliate with before they end up receiving some very degrading names and being treated like they are bald headed step sisters and brothers!
All I can say is shame on those greeks that go out to belittle their future sorors and frat. brothers.

Serioussigma22:(

Stop the madness!!! That is RIDICULOUS!

Enforcer00 05-02-2002 04:09 PM

Got one

Superfluous Surplus

She was a big girl but come on that's not right.

SO SWEET DOVE 05-06-2002 07:24 PM

 I don't understand. Why would you want someone in your organization with a deragatory name? Even if you disliked them or felt that they did not earn or deserve your letters, there is no excuse. This is an embarrassment to the chapter and the national body. Fortunately, we were able to choose our own line names that reflected an aspect of our personality.

ClassyLady 05-08-2002 11:38 AM

I have heard of some pretty bad ones but the worst was

N. E. W. Addition
NEW stands for Never Ever Wanted, and this was common knowledge

I just thought that was so cold.

Fine RHOyalty 05-08-2002 05:48 PM

 ClassyLady, that's awful!!!

In TBS, "Mama" let us choose our own names & we helped each other choose what fit them. I got to choose my deuce's name (Harlequin) and my tre's (The Good One- (sarcasm intended))

SeriousSigma22 05-08-2002 07:50 PM

Sorhors and Sisterfriends,

I have checked the previous post and I can't believe that chapters would actually give names like that N.E.W Addition and S. Surplus. Sometimes black folks can be so cruel and degrading to one another. That's not even funny or right and that is someone's child they are hurting. Shame on those Greeks and their messed up mentality!

Serioussigma22:mad:

UNIQUE97 05-10-2002 12:18 PM

Sometimes people can be so void of anything that remotely resembles a thought process!! These people need to get lives for themselves and stop trying to mess up other peoples lives! My big sister gave me a name that she believed fit who I was as a whole person. She said "you are the most UNIQUE person I know and I think it is a refreshing change from the norm" and with that I was dubbed UNIQUE! I thought that was the sweetest gesture and it really showed that she loved me and was proud to call me her SoRHOr. Who knew a simple name could do all that!!:)

TheEpitome1920 04-09-2004 04:22 PM

Just thinking about this

Here are some that I have run across recently:

Huh?
Hell Naw

Really? LOL!!!!!! They KNOW they were wrong for that...

LB1914 04-19-2004 10:22 AM

The Alphas at my alma mater used to get some messed-up line names. Off the top of my head, I can remember "Girl Scout", "Drama Queen", "Best Supporting Actress", "Halatosis"(sp?), "Tig Ole Biddies", "Oxy-5000", and a bunch of others. They would all switch to a name with "Ice" in it and get put that on their nalia afterwards, but of course most of us would remember their original, unflattering line name and coming out skit.

MsHanky 06-29-2004 02:18 PM

Well, my chapter is known for giving line names that are not the nicest. Hence, my line name "Ms. Hanky." But, what can ya do? It's just a chapter tradition. And, although our names aren't always nice they are never innapropriate (sexually explicit or anything else that would misrepresent DST). Sometimes it's frustrating b/c I see ppl with line names like "unbreakable" who don't deserve that name AT ALL! But, such is life. Also, we have other names that are even more dear to us and are always positive so I guess they balance each other out.

Blue Fire #3 07-07-2004 11:00 AM

I have to say this is the most interesting post. I really enjoy reading line names good or bad. The worst is Tarnished Pearl. I wont talk too much about it but we always get a bad line name thats a secret... and when we come out we get our good line name that is appropriate.

I think some names that will really shock you are the names of the graduate chapter members. I have heard one I.W.H.A. short for It Wont Happen Again... But it did have meaning for some line stuff they did. And another is "Silly Lilly" But they dont wear their names nor do they tell them.

rho4life 07-28-2006 03:17 PM

bump

cjoanell 07-28-2006 09:11 PM

" I.W.H.A. short for It Wont Happen Again" is crazy. You only get to come out once and that's somethin that everyone will remember.

tld221 07-28-2006 09:29 PM

i saw this chick's line shirt in passing - her line name was "nasty girl"

now why would you let someone up in your org if you thought about her like that? even as a joke, really?

another one - a friend of a friend jus crossed and his line name was "20-year-old virgin" WTH?! that is messed up, why put your business out there like that?

cjoanell 07-28-2006 09:33 PM

because people don't think or care and get off on putting others down.

Not only is that ridiculous, what on earth does it have to do with anything? I would be HEATED if I saw any of my sorors with the line names mentioned in this thread.

ProspeKt 07-29-2006 01:56 AM

I had a homegirl pledging xyz on a line that was split in half. The "made" half all had names preceded by "UN" and followed by a name associated wit xyz. The "paper" half had names such as Frivolous, Melancholy, and Insobordinate. Needless to say a lot of kontroversy arose.

Hey Sands......:D still trying to make it.....

but back to the topic, this just shows you that some people that have authority, don't know how to act. How does form sister/brotherhood with such deroggatory names and to the world at that. A MESS

Pledgees...oops I mean Intakees always had bad individual line names. It wasn't until they crossed them sands that they were able to pick their own names. But Pledge Class name was supposed to represent something positive about that line.

My pledgee name: Bookman/Rerun. I had to do mad What's Happening skits. I even had to carried a tool belt around like Bookman.

My Iota name(s): Quiet Storm, Big Brother SonnyDAZE

My Pledge Class: The Disorderlies (Long story, but trust me it represent a strength (not derogatory) our line had to endure)

My chapter had rules about the line names also. When we Ivys, we were given our line names by our big sisters and because we practice being discreet, we would NEVA be allowed to tell people those names. When we became AKA's, we got a chance to choose our own names.:D (thank GOD because, well...let's just say somethings shouldn't be repeated...

You are absolutely right about being discreet, our names were not publicly shouted out (the majority of the time...LOL:o .) You know boys being boys and wanting to impress the females on campus by having the pledge lines do skits and what not... you was never called by your real name so the Little Brother name was called. Unfortunately...my sweetheart line made us pillows with our pledge names. Aw Shucks....LOL. Some of us replaced the name.

SeriousSigma22 08-13-2006 07:57 PM

Folks,

I'm just amazed about some of the interesting, to say the least, line names. I must be getting really old!

choices

I cant believe some of yall actually got to choose your own line names! That is unimaginable! If that woulda been the case in my chapter we woulda had crazy names like Nupeoleon, Nuperman and Nupetastik! In my chapter the DP chooses all....and everyone generally gets two names. I enjoy seeing other ppl's names but i havent run into as many "bad" ones like discussed on here. I think most people who have "bad" names just make up an alias to put on their jacket anyways so nobody knows.
