I heard on the radio tonight that Left Eye was killed in a car accident. As you all know her new name was Nina and she had signed to Suge's label.

Member of R&B Trio Killed in Honduras Car Crash

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, a controversial member of chart-topping American R&B trio TLC, was killed in a car crash in Honduras on Thursday, a spokeswoman for her record label said.

Lopes, 31, was in Honduras for a vacation, Arista Records senior vice president Laura Swanson told The Associated Press. Lopes was reportedly among seven people in the car and the only fatality.

"No words can possibly express the sorrow and sadness I feel for this most devastating loss," said Arista president L.A. Reid, who helped shape the career of the popular R&B group.

The lineup of TLC, whose hit songs included "No Scrubs" and "Waterfalls," was rounded out by Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins.

Lopes made the headlines in 1994 after she was arrested for burning down the house of then-boyfriend, former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Andre Rison.

TLC's most recent album, 1999's "FanMail" topped the U.S. pop album charts for five weeks, and won the Grammy for best R&B album the following year.

I was just about to post about this. This is just a terrible tragedy. Many prayers go out to her family.

It was reported that there were 7 passengers and they all walked away except for "left eye".

Just thinking about how we are losing the artists whose music I grew up to. First Aaliyah, now Left Eye. Very sad.

I am in shock. I had just read about her in the last issue of XXL and Lil' Kim was on the radio here (NYC) yesterday and she (along w/Star and Bucwild) were talking about her.

I am really sad to hear about the news about Left Eye as I posted earlier....but....isn't it kind of suspect that 7 people were in the car, and no one else was hurt or much worse died but her. Also didn't she just sign to Death Row Records....also I heard that another Death Row artist or employee was killed at a gas station last week I think, or early this week....like I said just something to make you go hmmmmm as Arsenio would say.

THis is very sad. I hope it reminds people to never take anything for granted. Only God knows what tomorrow holds for you.

I also thought it was odd that with seven people in the car, no one else was even injured but she was killed instantly. :eek:

my husband told me about this before he left. i thought i was dreaming because i was still half-sleepy. this is just too much. what is even more devastating is that she was the only one that was fatally wounded in the accident.

This is was truly a tragedy, I guess we can only comfort in the fact that GOD was ready for her to come home. It seems like people are dropping like flies, excuse the pun. I dont know. When I heard about her death this morning, I also thought it was kind of suspicious that she was the only one that died, considering her new affiliation with death row records, but I guess we all have to trust that it is GOD's will and she was a peace. Someone said that the Honduras were a peaceful place for her so maybe she was at peace when she died. My prayers do go out to her family...

My girl who works at a newspaper in FL. told me about this last night. I have to say I didn't believe her. You just hear too many rumors about stars dying that turn out to be false. To wake up this morning and check CNN.com and see that right on the main page was a shock. My blessings go out to her family and friends. May she rest in peace.

It is interesting that you bring this up because there were rumors circulating that she had stormed out of Suge's office recently and came to the conclusion that she wanted to branch out on her own/start her own label/ideas, etc....to leave Death Row, or Tha Row (Just as Tupac wanted to do prior to his death.)

Had Left Eye and Brock Middlebrook (Rison) reconciled before this tragedy? :confused: The last I heard was that they were supposed to get married last July, but postponed the engagement date.

Last I had heard was the wedding had been called off and at some point since that time she had gotten involved with Suge Knight.

Reportedly , she was driving and was traveling with her sister and brother among others. Others were in fact injured and are hospitalized at this time. The SUV she was driving reportedly rolled ove causing her to sustain a fatal blow to the head.

This is truly a sad day. I woke up this morning to this terrible news. This truly makes you look at your life differently. I too thought about her record deal with Suge and how everyone that was working with Suge are dying. T-Boz and Chilli are on MTV now and they are crying. They can barely talk. This is so sad. :(

This is sooooooooo true. I was a BIG TLC fan when I was in high school. Left eye was so talented. There was an article about her in Vibe magazine a few months ago and it seemed like she was really getting her spirit together and making peace with alot that was going on with her life. It seems our Heavenly Father needed another angel

I really have to say this...It really upsets me and hurts me when I hear about talented young people with their lives ahead of them and so full of potential get called home. It just makes me wonder every know and then will I be ready when God calls me home? Sorry, ya'll...but I'm having a moment:(

I was on the air when Aaliyah died and I was on the air live when we got the word that Left eye died. It was all the callers in to the station talked about all night. This is so sad.

No disrespect but is anybody a little "weary" of this whole accident? I mean dang 7 people and she was the only one killed? And wasn't she involved with that religion(I forgot what it was, she talked about it in Honey though) that some people believed was a cult?

I'll feel more comfortable when they bring the body back to America and we get more information.

CNN said today is T-Boz birthday. What a day to find out that your friend is dead!

I don't know if this means anything. If my memory serves me right last year the Mitsubishi Montero did get a horrible safety rating. Because of tests proved they flip over easily. does anyone else remember this?:confused:

Easy at it is to suspect Suge, it seems it was truly an accident. That she was the only one who died is doubly tragic. Hopefully she'll be remembered for the more positive stuff she accomplished.

When I read this on CNN.com, I was stunned. My co-workers couldn't figure out why I was in shock. I have listened to TLC ever since the first album back in '92. When you follow someone for years and then something like this happens, it feels like you've lost a friend. I felt the same way when Aaliyah passed 8 months ago.


My condolences go out to the Lopes family and the remaining members of TLC.

Lisa, you will be missed.

From what I heard, Left Eye was the driver. She wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was speeding. She died instantly when the truck she was driving flipped over and she sustained a trauma to the head. If everyone else had seatbelts on, then it would not be unreasonable for her to be the only fatality.

This is such a shame. I really hope that this was just an accident and that there was no foul play involved.

Although I was not a huge fan of their music, I was really touched by their single "Unpretty". It left a lasting impression with me to this day.

T-Boz and Chilli spoke via phone on MTV and 106 and Park. Sometimes people ask the most inappropriate questions. Free and AJ were asking something about the incident. (I saw both interviews)and they just broke down on BET. I was like dannnnng. First, how could they do these interviews? Second, how could people ask certain questions? :mad:

During one of the interviews, T-Boz said that the last time she had seen/or heard from Left Eye was like 3 weeks ago when she was in the hospital. Left Eye sent her all these plants etc. You never know what will happen. T-Boz is the one how from time to time is affected from her Sickle Cell, but Left Eye was the one that went before. One never will know who's time will come first, well or not.

The little girl she had adopted was the daughter of a young lady that she met in the "half way" house she was ordered to attend during the fire incident.

That SUV was demolished. :eek:

Left-Eye said she did not believe in death, but in a transformation, so I guess she's transforming...

I saw pics of that SUV on Lycos. It was demolished.

Singer was in van that struck and killed Honduran boy earlier this month, one of her lawyers confirms

La Ceiba, Honduras -- Nearly three weeks before dying in a car accident near here, Atlanta singer Lisa Lopes was in a van that struck and killed a 10-year-old Honduran boy in an accident that was not reported to legal authorities.

The van was being driven by Lopes personal assistant, said Greg Adams, public affairs officer for the U.S. embassy. Stephanie Patterson of Atlanta was Lopes' personal assistant until Lopes' death Thursday.

The Mitsubishi Patterson was driving was in the center lane, and the boy -- Bayron Isaul Fuentes Lopez -- stepped off the median. "He was trailing after his sisters and brothers and stepped off the curb at the last minute," Adams said.

Early Sunday evening, a manager for Lopes' pop group, TLC, said he was aware of reports about the April 6 accident in Honduras. "But the reality is, no one I'm dealing with wants to comment at this time," said Rob Goldstone.

He also added that he was not certain if Patterson had returned to Atlanta. She could not be reached for comment.

Patrick James Bennett, a lawyer in Honduras who has represented Lopes in other matters but not this one, nonetheless confirmed some of the details of the accident.

He said it never was reported to police or the judiciary, and no autopsy was performed, as required under Honduran law in deaths not by natural causes. He also said that Lopes paid about $3,700 for the boy's medical care and funeral, and also gave the family about $925.

The boy "was on the main street with a group of people who crossed over," Bennett said. "The kid jumped in front. That's the reason the family pressed no charges. (Lopes and Patterson) did everything that was possible to be done. They paid the expenses and the funeral, and the family was contented. They didn't call the police."

The family had taken down Lopes' name at the time of the accident and noted the tattoos on her arms, according to a report in the San Pedro Sula daily newspaper, La Prensa. After her death last Thursday, a photo of Lopes in which her tattoos were visible ran in the Honduran press, and the family realized she was involved in the boy's death.

The accident happened between 8:45 and 9 p.m. on a highway near the Reyes Caballero neighborhood in the La Lima sector, about a half hour drive from central San Pedro Sula.

At the time the boy was hit, Lopes, Patterson and a man whom Bennett knew only as "James" were driving in the van to pick up Kurtis Toliver , who runs Lopes' Atlanta recording studios and was arriving at the San Pedro Sula airport, Bennett said.

The boy was walking with his uncle, Miguel Angel Rivera, to visit other family when he was struck, La Prensa reported.

The boy's family "entered into talks with some lawyers from San Pedro Sula contracted by the singer so that they would take care of the case and it would go no further," the newspaper said.

Attempts to reach those attorneys were not immediately successful. The boy's family "did not file charges against Stephanie and Lisa Lopes because they acted so well, in such a good fashion," the article, which was written in Spanish, stated. "They were with the child until his last moments."

Bennett said no autopsy was performed because "it depends on who you are in Honduras. There are a lot of bodies in the morgue. If Lisa Lopes was Honduran, they would not be doing that (performing an autopsy). It's because she's famous and not a Honduran."

Also Sunday, Lopes' body "was released to funeral home in the afternoon for preparation. The autopsy was completed over the weekend," said the U.S. Embassy's Adams.

He said one member of the group accopanying the rapper on vacation was still in the hospital with a broken leg. The rest all have been released.

Lopes' body was to be released to family Monday.

Employee Rosa de Diaz confirmed that Funeraria San Jose is handling the arrangments and that the autopsy had been completed.

A private wake for Lisa Lopes is set for Wednesday evening and the funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, according to TLC's manager, Bill Diggins. The location for the funeral was still pending as of Sunday evening.

It has also been reported that reporters broke into the morgue where Left Eye's body is held and opened the coffin and was taking pictures! What is wrong with the world today?!?! I love me some TLC and that is just soo disrespectful to do to the dead. Let her rest in peace!

The body of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes is on its way home to Atlanta, where funeral services will take place Thursday.

According to her publicist, police in Honduras released the remains of the TLC star to her brother, who is currently bringing her home to Atlanta. Lopes' family has scheduled a private wake for Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, new details have surfaced about another car accident involving Lopes three weeks before her death--which resulted in the death of a 10-year-old boy--as well as gruesome photos of Lopes' body that have now surfaced on the Internet.

Lopes was killed Thursday night after she lost control of the Mitsubishi Montero SUV she was driving just outside the city of Jutiapa.

According to investigators, the rapper-singer was coming from an herbal healing center in the city of La Ceiba and attempted to pass another car on a two-lane highway when an oncoming truck forced her to swerve to the left. The vehicle, carrying eight passengers, ran off the road, flipped over several times and struck two trees.

Lopes, the so-called "crazy" member of the Grammy-winning Atlanta-based R&B trio, suffered fractures and internal injuries. She died at the scene.

The other passengers survived the crash and were hospitalized. All are expected to recover.

Honduran Police cited speeding as the cause of the accident, though Police Inspector John Cole said investigators are still trying to determine exactly how fast she was driving.

An autopsy was reportedly scheduled to be performed before her body was shipped back to Atlanta Monday for burial.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Lopes was involved in a car accident April 6 that resulted in the death of a 10-year-old Honduran boy. The singer's personal assistant, Stephanie Patterson, was behind the wheel (Lopes was a passenger) when she struck and killed Bayron Isaul Fuentes after he stepped off the curb to chase after his sisters and brothers.

The accident was not reported to local police and no autopsy was performed. Patrick James Bennett, a lawyer representing Lopes in a number of legal matters in Honduras who confirmed the story to the Journal-Constitution, said that since the child purportedly "jumped" in front of their car, the family declined to press charges.

Bennett added that Lopes paid about $3,700 for the boy's medical care and funeral, and also gave the family about $925.

"[Lopes and Patterson] did everything that was possible to be done. They paid the expenses and the funeral, and the family was contented. They didn't call the police," he said.

Lopes publicist Jay Marose confirmed the accident, but noted that in no way did "Lisa try to use her money to buy her assistant out of a problem." He said Lopes and her assistant did "more than what they were supposed to do" to help the boy, including making sure he got to a better hospital nearby.

"The basic rundown of some of the facts are correct but the spirit of the [press report] is wildly off base," said Marose. "It's kind of being framed that they were ugly Americans and they paid somebody to get away with it, but that's not the case at all."

Marose says the family expressed amazement that Lopes and Patterson even stopped after the accident. "In Honduras, people don't even stop," he said, adding that the boy's family was hesitant to accept anything because of local customs.

Lopes' family, meanwhile, has been horrified to hear that photos taken of Lopes' body have turned up in local Honduran newspapers as well as on the Internet.

"She was dropped off at the morgue by her brother and her assistant, who personally had to physically bring her there in a coffin and place her in a refrigerated room," said Marose. "Within an hour, someone from the U.S. Embassy went there and found 15 to 20 reporters in the morgue shooting photographs and video. They removed the coffin, removed the lid, and tilted it on its side to get a better vantage point."

Marose said the family is "disgusted" and "horrified" and has called on the media not to print the photos. The family also said it disapproves of attempts by people to profit from her death and sell footage of the crash site.

I saw the picture of her in the coffin and the bruises she had. It seems like they put her in pajamas...:confused:
