Do you mean, how do you found a local sorority and then affiliate with a National?
Here is a good thread about a young lady who was disappointed by Rush and created her own local sorority:
http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showth...threadid=10264
They have some Nationals interested in them.

As for approaching a National to come to your campus, you would write to the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) at www.npcwomen.org to their Extention Committee.
Basically, no group can come to your campus, unless the campus is declared open for extension by the NPC.

I copied this from a website, which should help you:
________________
What can I do if I have a special interest in having ______ on a campus?

NPC guidelines provide for orderly extension procedures. _____ may express interest in colonization by filing a letter of interest with a college or university. However, no contact with students may be initiated by the Fraternity unless the campus is officially open for extension.

_______ alumnae interest and opinions are very important to us when we consider extension opportunities. Alumnae may advise the Fraternity of your interest and your recommendation will be carefully considered. We want to hear from you!

How is NPC (National Panhellenic Conference) involved with the extension process?

The Extension Committee of the National Panhellenic Conference serves as a clearinghouse for colleges, Panhellenics, and individual fraternities in the field of extension. All NPC groups have agreed upon fair and orderly extension procedures, which are directed by the NPC extension committee. _________ carefully follows these guidelines and cooperates fully with both the local college administration and NPC.

The Extension Committee of NPC will assist any campus wishing to add an NPC sorority chapter or establish a Panhellenic system. The Extension Committee will also assist any local sorority wishing to affiliate with _________ or any other National Panhellenic Conference member group. Any individual, college Panhellenic, or local sorority needing informationshould contact:

Extension Committee of NPC
NPC Central Office
3905 Vincennes Rd.
Indianapolis, IN 46268
(317) 872-3185 - phone
(317) 872-3192 - fax
npccentral@npcwomen.com
www.npcwomen.org

How does a local sorority or interest group become a ________chapter?

__________does accept local sororities/interest groups as colonies. However, the process differs depending on the local situation. Again, we follow NPC guidelines.

How are new members chosen for a colony?

Colony members may be members of a local sorority seeking international affiliation, or new members may be selected by a Fraternity team of officers participating in a recruitment effort on a campus. Sometimes _____ is the only group colonizing on a campus; sometimes __________ participates in a multiple colonization in concert with other NPC groups.

Do we ever have the chance to reestablish a closed chapter?

Yes, and often we have done so. However, this is entirely dependent upon the campus situation. According to NPC guidelines, the invitation for recolonization must come from the campus Panhellenic.

What is my first step if I have an interest group on a campus and want to pursue affiliation with ____________?

It is unethical for an NPC fraternity to establish a chapter on a campus without the approval of the proper authority on that campus. The "proper authority" in most cases is the college Panhellenic on that campus. In the case of a campus without an organized college Panhellenic, the administration would constitute "proper authority".

The local interest group must receive the approval from the proper authority on their campus before pursuing affiliation with _______________. Please contact the National Panhellenic Conference Extension Committee with any questions about this process.

Jenn, never did say which way you were looking to go or I missed!

Either way, it is a lot of hard work!!! I know as I did!

But guess what, I would never give up what I did and the many Brothers that I have from it!

I learned more doing that than I did in 7 years of school, 2 colleges, and 1 Fraternity that I pledged!

Tuff But Rewarding!

Good Luck to you!

:)

in that case, the "Rush at UCSC" thread is the way to go, since it sounds like your situation, getting a local going from the ground up! Good Luck! Also one of the Greekchatter members, localsororities, she might be able to help you out.....and I don't know if you saw, but there is Locals forum:

Thank you so much i am really grateful

Finer Woman10-A-91 04-24-2002 08:07 PM

just curious...

Not to be discouranging, but if you really have no idea about how to start a Sorority...perhaps, you should not start one. Afterall, your Sorority's life line will be based on the foundation you put in place. I love the idea of expansion, but just maybe its not a sorority that you really want to start...perhaps what your really want is a club for you and your friends.

Is it possible that there may be a sorority already in existence that perhaps mirrors your ideal sorority? Just a thought.

Excellent points Finer Woman10-A-91!
Have you tried seeking information about the organizations that already exist on your campus (if any)?

JennV82 04-24-2002 09:12 PM

well i am not looking to form a "club" i belive that a sisterhood should be fun not like some of the sororities around here. I think its an advantage to begin anew that way new ideas will be formed instead of the dull traditional ones. but thank you for your advice i am open to anything even ignorant comments like yours.

JennV82 04-24-2002 09:13 PM

yes volgirl i have looked into other ones and none of them spike an interest in me.

Dull traditional ideas? Ignorant comments? I am curious as to what your definition of a sorority and sisterhood is.

Finer Woman10-A-91 04-24-2002 09:20 PM

I have been a member of my sorority for over 11 years. My suggestions were not made out of ignorance. Just as an aside, I think its awfully presumptious of you to say the sororities are dull or traditional in your parts. Especially since you are not a member of any sorority. Believe it or not, at some point your "sorority to be" will have traditions too...and the future members may think of them as ...dull and if your sorority last...the rituals and established programs will be called...TRADITIONAL.

And by the way, you can forma club that has sisterhood...it does n't necessarily have to be a sorority.

JennV82 04-24-2002 09:27 PM

well i know that you are trying to help but putting someone down isn't the way to help...well i have nothing against other sororties tradition but i belive that coming into a new cetury we should have a set of new values and ideas....that comment wasn't meant to be taken in a negative way.

Finer Woman10-A-91 04-24-2002 09:37 PM

its all a matter of perspective

It certainly was not my intention to put you down. Like I said in my initial post, growth is good. I just wanted you to see there are other options. My point again is: How can you be against a sorority's traditions, values or ideas if you have not researched them? And based on your few posts, I don't believe you have. The answer to a couple basic questions was handed to you by current sorority and fraternity members who did the research you really should have done.

welll i did do the research but wasn't sure about a few things. I WILL learn the values and advatages of being in a sorority and like I said i am NOT against others traditions and values i just belive that times change so i would likw to start something more down to earth.

...maybe because they would require some "warmth".

Finer Woman10-A-91 made some great comments to take into consideration when beginning a new sorority. I dont think she was making a personal attack or judging your character.

Dont feel defensive if you get advice that isnt necessarily encouraging becuase its probably realistic. You probably have NO idea of the obstacles you will encounter.

Greekchat has a lot of knowledgeable people giving you some pretty good advice. Just take the good with the bad.

I am open to all advice and i am not being defensive.

UMgirl 04-24-2002 10:15 PM

Ok, I gotta kinda disagree with the statement that if you don't know how to start a sorority, than maybe you shouldn't do it. I only disagree with this because in my opinon who really DOES know how to start one? Most of us in groups know what goes on because weve been in them for so long and others have taught us how to work in them. I don't think (and this is just my opinion) that all of our founders knew exactly what they were doing (right away at least) when they started out. I know my sorority's founders seeked help out and Im sure others did. You somehow model those sororites around you and modify it to your liking. I'm sure when ADPi started out they might have gotten their ideas from the fraternities that were around them but changed stuff to their liking.

Anywho Jenn, as far as our traditonal stuff goes, there is just some stuff that no matter how much time flys by...doesnt need to be changed (no matter how ridiculous you may think it is) because of the senitmental value you get from it. Like someone said, if and when you get yours started, who knows maybe 10 years down the line, the girls in the one you founded will think not too fondly of the rituals you cherished when you started it. As far as thinking that many sororities are too traiditon and stuck back in time, its not like we're all still wearing corsetts, wearing skirts that hit the ankle, and having tea while playing cricket (ill stop the tangent now). Over whatvere number of years an org has been around, its members adapt that orgs values and concepts to the current culture wihtout really changing the foundation of them. So we do tend to start anew with fresh ideals and concepts. Good luck with starting a new sorority. Just seek help from indiviuals who have done it and you should be fine.

BTW, where in New York are you?

Tom Earp 04-24-2002 10:20 PM

Jenn, In your defense, and not against finerwoman, I started my own local! I did know all of the Fraternitys on my campus and did not want to join.

Ergo I started my own and the idea was to affiliate with a Large National.

I do not think it is right for members of GC to Put Down someone who is interested in starting something new!

If that was the case, None Of Us Would be here!

We would all belong to (A) Fraternity, or (B) Soroity! Get the Picture???

volgirl2376 04-24-2002 10:32 PM

Who exactly was discouraging Jenn from starting her own sorority? I simply asked her in her quest for information if she had researched the organizations that already existed (if any) on her campus. If none of them were for her, which obviously they arent - more power to her for starting her own. But to call any comments such as that an "ignorant comment" is plain rude.

Just as a point of clarification. There are some very concrete things one can do to start an organization...or for that matter a sorority. If you are not a good organizer, maybe you should not try to start a sorority. Everyone who thinks they have an idea for a good thing...or sorority for that matter again, should not necessarily start something new.

Again, I have read some great insights regarding contemporary Sorority life and please understand Jen...YOU will establish what the values of your Sorority are. As a Founder, members will look to YOU as the person who had the vision. The values will not be something you learn as you go. You will gain a greater appreciation for your vision and membership over time.

Alternately, my good business advice would be to partner with a good organizer, finance person, and record keeper to start.

Any sorority or fraternity worth its weight in gold will be able to look back and know very clearly that their founders not only had a vision but also had a plan.

Hey there
Jenn I hope by fun you don't mean just parties and boys. I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I have manyyyy friends and know other people who said they didn't like the work of sororities and that is why they did not want to join, or people as soon as they found out it was not "just fun" left. By all means your sorority is supposed to add to your heart and mind, and you will have a lot of fun, but there are the meetings and dues, and elections, and Panhell, and community service and other things that may not seem "fun" to you, but if you really want sisterhood all around and you are that type of person you will enjoy them. You will also have your shares of stress and tears all which will help you to become a more experienced and fullfilled person by the time you leave school.
Good luck in any event:)
what school do you go to?

JennV82 04-24-2002 10:54 PM

First off thank you, i know that some of the traditions are definitaly going to be in the sorority and i know that a few years down the line they may think of my ideas as old but i am just inspired in forming a sorority that is open to all and many ideas....FinerWoman, what do you mean by getting together with a record keeper or orginization?

No that is not my idea of fun, i knew that would be an issue. I know that not everything is fun but it can be more fun... I go to Hofstra...you?

Finer Woman10-A-91 04-24-2002 10:58 PM

You researched...

You had a plan. I am not against expansion. But to get really business like for a moment, most start-up businesses fail because they have no plan or an inadequate plan for growth.
The same can probably be said of sororities and fraternities.

Jenn, I wish you the absolute best in whatever your final decision may be. Just remember, starting and maintaining even a well established organization is a lot of HARD work. It will NOT always be fun.

My goal was simply to show you another side to the challenge of establishing a sorority. and pique your interest in first really researching the existing sororities. And if you were to find that none of the sororities on your campus or in your community interest you, then you would know in your heart and on paper that it really was time to start something new.

Perhaps your sorority will very simple by design. Perhaps your Sorority will only exist on your current campus forever. Perhaps your Sorority will not have a need for dues. Perhaps your Sorority will limits its membership to 10 members per year. Who knows? Its your Sorority. You can make it be whatever you want it to be...and I say that with the best intentions.

A sorority, or indeed any organization needs to have some sort of organizational structure in place. At the very least, you will need:

President
Vice President
Secretary (i.e. records what happened in the meetings)
Treasurer

Here is a local, Iota Beta Chi:
http://welcome.to/iotabetachi
and also Alpha Omega:
http://www.wlu.ca/~wwwss/greek/alphao.htm

Alpha Omega has these Executive Positions, to give you an idea of what you will need:

President
Vice-President
Rush Chair
Pledge Educator
Social Chair
Charity Coordinator
Ritual Chair
Treasurer
Secretary
Publications Chair

New Sorority

Hi Jen!
Just some info... I started my own sorority on campus and it was a lot of hard work and dedication. First, I looked into what I needed to do to be recognized on campus, then I started gathering interested ladies. Throughout this, I was researching organizations through the internet (I was looking at non-NPC orgs.). Based on the responses, the group decided on an organization and began working with the expansion director.
Have you looked into what it takes to start a new club/org on your campus? How does your campus feel about bringing in a new sorority? Of course there is more to it than that, but just a little info for you :) Hope it helps!

JennV82 04-25-2002 10:04 AM

Thank you gamma, i have looked into it and they are very open-minded, no sorority has ever been formed in this school so they are very pleased with my idea.

I alsoaminterested in bringing a new sorority to my school the ones we have here I have looked into and they really dont seem like the ideal plave for me and 25 of my friends, I know it will be hard work but I want to establish zta at my school I just dont understand every step I need to take in order to do so? Is it allowed to call ourselves a zta interst group or not??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

NoShame_Gamma 04-25-2002 08:06 PM

Aside from looking into what the school's requirements are, I would also contact ZTA and let them know of your interest. Only they can tell you if you can call yourself and interest group of ZTA or not. I would recommend you write to one of the ZTA's on this site for more info. I hope this helps!
