Why not AfAm's roots music?

Again, no real jazz categories for the awards. AfAms created jazz, and I'm not talking about that "smooth jazz" trash. If our own don't recognize it, who will?

CrimsonTide4 06-25-2002 08:17 PM

Pre Show

I was going to just skip it and watch one of the gazillion reruns to watch American Idol but I just turned and saw the 106&Park/BET AWards Pre Show and I have got to watch.

FREE: Y'all know I don't like her so pardon me but that heffa has on the fuggliest mess I have seen in a while.

I just saw that Foxy Brown is nominated for Hip Hop Female yet when was the last time Fozy had a CD out? Not as bad as last year when they nominated 702 who had not recorded since the 90s:eek: but come on!!!

I already see I am going to have to create Hot Mess Distinctions for some of the mess I saw in the preshow.

neicy81 06-25-2002 09:08 PM

Foxy Brown released an album last year and 702 released one in 2000.

The show might be good though.

neicy81 06-25-2002 09:23 PM

BET Awards Gripes

Trina's hair---stop letting your cousin dye your hair

exquizit 06-25-2002 09:24 PM

Why Free??????????

She looks a damn mess!

CrimsonTide4 06-25-2002 09:32 PM

SUNSHINE

Jill looks like a great big old SUN BURST.

We are 30 minutes into the show and have only presented 2 awards but 3 performances.

I love Yolanda's dress but not that choker-eque thang she is wearing.

OOOOOOOOOOH LAWD, CITA just started talking.

skeeliteful 06-25-2002 09:51 PM

Right about now....

Just to hear who Ced and Steve are gonna crack on next is the only thing that's keeping me interested.

OOMG I am sitting here bored as heck. I could have went ahead and watched American Idol. They have performance overkill IMO.

Steve's new suit is a little UUUUUMM like WHOA.

EWF's guitarist has a BANGING ASS PERM. His hair looks better than mine. He has some pretty azz curls too.

Reasons was kind of messed up though. :( But I still have maaaaaaaad love for EWF. This is the best part of show so far.

AKAtude 06-25-2002 10:16 PM

Is it the volume or reception of my television because it sounds as though some of these performers not participate in warm-up?:o

korkscru 06-25-2002 11:43 PM

Why did Mary J. Blige (and I like Mary) get up there and act like a nut. Did you guys notice that with all of her stomping and jumping around, she had to place her right tit back into her bra cup...MORE THAN TWICE!!! For the LIFE of me, I can't understand why she wears such nice outfits in her videos, but on the awards shows, she's like totally busted. I just don't get it.

Why is JaRule (and I really like him too) acting like he's as drunk as a skunk? "Cut the check"? What's up with THAT?

Why is Puffy looking like he just came off of the farm? I realize that his outfit may cost more than a month's pay for me, but with all of his money (and the SeanJohn collections) why is he dressing like that?

And tell me why did New Edition get up there trying to solicit their new album and tour, ESPECIALLY BEFORE announcing who the winner of that category was? They're totally BOOTY!!!

Gosh, I love Angie Stone (she's also from S.C.), but does she look like the type to be with D'Angelo? Well, it really doesn't matter, does it because she WAS with him and she has his son, right?

Yall I don't care what Jill Scott wears, how her hair is done, or what she sings, JILL IS MY GURRRL!!!!! But in all honesty, that outfit just does not do her ANY justice.

I tell ya. Most of the time I actually DRED watching the awards shows for Black people because something usually happens or someone usually acts like a fool. Luckily, ony ESSENCE has been able to avoid most of that for their award show.

I'll be back with more comments later.

CrimsonTide4 06-25-2002 11:52 PM

My Final Comments. . . .

. . . for tonight :p

Only BET can have a 2 hour and 48 minute award show and only present 10 awards but have 14 performances.

LMAO @ Soror Korkscru's assessment of Mary.

Jill can blow, bottom line, but tonight looked like she had the role of the SUN in the 4th grade afrocentric play.

EWF's guitarist -- baaaaaaad little roller set.

Puffy did look like a hip hop Farmer on the Dell.

jojapeach 06-25-2002 11:54 PM

DAAAAYUUUUM!!!

Muhammad Ali just didn't give a rat's tail did he? Did he just tell Bob Johnson and everybody about that cheap award and that he wouldn't come back again?

I didn't see the beginning of Snoop's presence, but why were he and Don Juan up there looking like pimps, and they had the girls out there? Who set that up??? And I've never seen a mismatch awards pair like pimpish Snoop and refined Johnnie Cochran.

Somebody shoulda took those hooker boots from Free. That was not cute at all.

I loved when Jada heard Will's name, and you could read her lips as she said, "That's what I'm talkin' bout!" Represent yo man!

Being a College Park girl, Ludacris straight represented!!! Everytime I see him, he brings such a feeling of pride. I didn't like those dancin' booty girls, though. I could have sworn we were trying to change images. BUUUT, that was the krunkest performance, especially have Mystikal there. :D

The performance at the end was great.

Thank God I flipped b/t American Idol and the awards.

aprilzeta 06-26-2002 12:36 AM

my comments regarding the BET awards...

Why was I cracking up at Ja-Rule when he couldn't get the jumper thing off.http://www.plauder-smilies.de/rofl.gif

Did Charli B. steal Mr Ed's tail?

Please tell me why Chaka didn't know the words to EWF's song? Did she forget to practice?

Snoop, Don Juan (or whatever his name is), and Johnnie Cochran...one hot mess!!!

Free, Jilly from Philly(she still my girl) outfits...WHYYYYYYYYY??????

BTW, what in the world did Missy have on? She looked like she was trying out for the basketball team.

Muhammad Ali was the best when he called their award cheap(LOL).

BET needs to seriously consider how to have an awards show...

KnowledgeEternal 06-26-2002 12:47 AM

ummmm....

.....did I just see someone wearing a tuxedo AND a bowtie without a shirt?

.....did every one that performed get an award right after their performance(or soon after)?

.....did Will Smith give a 15-20 minute acceptance speech?

.....did Leila Ali say "Vena and Serena Williams"?

.....did they have big bootyshake performances before AND after the gospel performance/award?

.....seeing as how 99.99% of the people voting for videos are young teenage girls did they not expect B2k to win viewers choice?

.....were there only 10 award categories?

BET made a smart move in showing Janet (Or as I like to call her Ms. Jackson :p ).

delph998 06-26-2002 02:27 AM

A LOT TO SAY...

YEAH, you did see a man in the audience with a bow tie on and no shirt! That was FUNNY AS HECK!!!!!! LMAO!!!!

Ja had me rollin' when he was trying to get out of that outfit...LMAO!

Charlie Baltimore was in ULTIMATE VIOLATION for that phony pony!!

Yolanda Adams was soooooooooo wrong for those ugly STRING bangs in her face! What the heck was that?! I think her performance sucked. I love her and all, but I wasn't impressed.

Earth Wind & Fire: did that guitarist look crazy in that red outfit or what?! His hair was off the chain!!!

Jill disappointed me...she looked terrible in that outfit. I do love her though.

Is it just me, or do y'all think they GAVE India.Arie that award?

Will Smith is soooo fine!

There are so many things I wanna say, but can't think of them, so that's all for now!

delph998 06-26-2002 02:30 AM

more to say

Usher's performance was super to me. And he looked really good in his white linen suit!!

B2K did a great job as well.

Ashanti was so so, but that was the best live performance I've seen her do.

Ludicris set it off!

The show was too long but BET is getting better. I thought it was going to be a little less professional, so I was impressed. That's all, I think.

delph998 06-26-2002 03:17 AM

Why didn't Angie Stone get nominated for anything? Her album is BANGIN'!!! I think she deserved, at least a nomination.

*sigh* i dont think you could have said it any better. :(

Overall, it was a decent show. I have seen better, but, with this only being the second show, it wasnt so bad... I guess

Was that comment about J.Lo really neccessary (considering P.Diddy just walked off the stage a SECOND before the comment)?
-->"Im going down to Atlanta to look for some booty. Im not talking that J.Lo booty cause e'er body done had a piece of that..."

Can Janet Jackson's stomach get ANY more flat?

babydoll3 06-26-2002 07:56 AM

I think that was Ashanti's best performance too, she sounded okay but before she sounded a mess.

There were about 10 performances and Ja Rule were in 3 of them, can you say OVERKILL!!!!

B2K had a good performance but I'm so tired of people lip singing.

Usher was really good, considering he danced and really sang!!!!!

Yeah I think they GAVE India Irie that award due to the fact that she didn't win ANY grammy's! (was she a little dramatic or what?)

As the ONLY black station, I thought they should have done a tribute to out fallen stars such as Aaliyah and Left Eye.

2DISCRETE4U 06-26-2002 09:17 AM

Well I didn't get to see the whole show because I fell asleep.
But I did catch the 106 and Park preview show. Ok, I have no comment on the 'outfit' that Free had on. It was just plain ridiculous! :o
Did anyone else see the performance from Truth Hurts?? Um, I wasn't impressed and she seemed to struggle on the few high notes that she did have in the song. :(
I did catch the end of Usher's performance and I loved it! :D He's a great entertainer.
I'll definitely have to catch the rerun so I can see Chris Lover Lover's (a.k.a. Ludacris) performance!

kiml122 06-26-2002 09:25 AM

I don't even know where to start. First off I was I kept saying to myself is this show ever going to end...dayum!! It was like it went on forever.

Jill is my girl too, but I was not feeling her that bright yellow/orange thing she had on.

Did anyone notice that Laila didn't thank her dad, or say anything about him. I think one of the Williams sisters should have won that award, but feel that they gave it to Laila because of ALi getting the award at the end.

I think they gave India.Arie that award because she was robbed in so many of the other shows. It also got to the point where I was like ok sit down now.

I was cracking up when Ja couldn't get the clothes off, I thought he was going to slip and fall on the floor and then I would have for real been no more good.

I was not digging what Mary had on in her performance.

Steve's suit when he was doing his thing for EWF was a bit much for my eyes. Vernadine's (sp) hair is always flowing. I was glad to see V's brother Maurice White able to join them on stage. When Phillip Bailey was singing Reason's...I was like oh my listen to his voice. I still enjoyed their performance though.

I was cracking up at how many performances they had, and then didn't give out that many awards...but hey it was BET.

Did anyone notice that when Free and AJ were on stage with the viewer chioce winner, and when they were talking about who was nominated, before they went off to the screen to show you who was nominated, the viewers choice winner had started to open the envelope already...I was like please don't let her blurt out the winner before hand.

That's all for now.

Oh one more thing, if ALi didn't want the award, then why in the hell did he come in the first place....give me a break, and I thought for sure that he was going to drop the award when Will placed it in his hands with all that shaking.

SeriousAKA 06-26-2002 10:01 AM

OK.... ya'll ar real.y cracking me up!!!! Too bad I missed alot of the show becasue of my addiction to RW. Did Mr. Ali reallysay cheap award? I must catch the re-runs!!!!!

(By the way, I'm still laughing at Bobby Brown being the original R&B king!!!!)

vanda 06-26-2002 10:20 AM

I don't even know where to start!

Verdeen white needs to be in a Pantene commercial. his hair is just too beautiful.

I didn't see Dre from outcast unless he has gained a few hundred pounds( Who was that guy?)

Yolanda Adams looked like she had weeping willows on the front of her head and they wilted from the humidity.

Is it me or did it seem funny Aaliyah was in the lead for the viewers choice all through the program but B2K won? Did you notice Alicia had the least amout of votes ( Are we getting tired of her already?)

Why did the boxing promoter come out looking like a Chippendale dancer that just wouldn't retire with that tuxedo and bowtie with no shirt getup?

It tugged at my heart to see not only Muhammed Ali but also Maurice White deal with the effects from Parkinson's disease. But it was good to see them.

B2K. That wasn't really singing a song too me. Just lots of dancing.

Did you see Kim Whitley mouth Oh My God when Janet came on the stage?

What did Suge Knight do during the awards or was it off camera because India.Arie mentioned it during the post interview?

How many of y'all was singing right along with Steve? I know I was!

From BET.com

There were some tense moments during a commercial break when it appeared to those in the audience that Suge Knight and Snoop Dogg were ready to rumble. Suge, dressed in bright red leather, sat right across from Snoop when a seat become available. The two exchanged words and things quickly got tense. Since the show was broadcast live to the East Coast, for a minute it looked like the confrontation would spill over into the broadcast. Steve Harvey asked for respect, then Suge walked to the stage and the two men had a brief conversation. Snoop moved to toward the backstage entrance, but stayed visible there for most of the show.

"I talked to Suge and asked him for respect and Suge said he would never disrespect the event," Steve Harvey said backstage later.

FeeFee 06-26-2002 11:35 AM

I did not see the entire show b/c I was at Bible study at church. I'm quite sure BET will replay the show about 100 times though :)

Free from 106 and Park - What was she wearing??? She looked like a big ole mop!!! Janet Jackson - Yes I did see Kim E. Whitley shout out "oh my God" too; Ms. Jackson look like she could use a couple of sandwiches, she looks soooo tiny!
India.Arie - Even if they did GIVE her the award, about time she got something!!!
Snoop, Bishop Don Magic Juan (whatever his name is  ) and Johnny Cochran - WHAT'S UP WITH THAT
The Ali tribute - very nice performance by Alicia, Yolanda, Jill and Angie.
Butch Lewis - nice speech, but next time please wear the shirt that came with the tux, that look is NOT sexy on you!!
How come when a rapper wins an award, he/she feels the need to bring the entire crew on stage??? Not cute.
Mary J. Blige - how come she looked like she was about to catch the Holy Ghost with all that jumping around???
Will Smith - I could not wait for him to stop talking!!!
Muhammad Ali - NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT :D
EWF - I missed that part, quite sure I will catch the replay.

Japera1920 06-26-2002 11:57 AM

EWF performance was hitting. Perm was tight. You can tell Phil Bailey is getting older because he cannot hit the high notes.

EWF will always be my favorite.

prayerfull 06-26-2002 12:22 PM

I thought the show was pretty good. I was ROTFL when Cedric acknowledged New Edition and then said "Is Bobby with y'all tonight?"

Somebody...please hire Alicia Keys an image consultant/etiquette trainer. What's the deal with that guy who's always with her...is that her man or what?

Trina, Foxy Brown...nominated for what? why?

A little more info on the Shug/Snoop thing...from a Soror on The Vine...

"Shug Knight walked into the middle of the BET Awards
show. People saw him & IMMEDIATELY broke out. Shug
sits down on the same row as Snoop. They stare each
other down. They move toward each other. The WHOLE
bottom level of the seating area CLEARS OUT (knowing
something is about to go down). PURE CHAOS! When
Lailah Ali comes on, the audience can't even hear her
because of the CHAOS. When Alicia Keys wins her
award, she comes from the back (behind the stage) to
get her award...and that is why she said what she said
about US loosing too many of our people. Alicia
had been sitting across from Shug when the mess was
about to go down. Snoop changes clothes to all BLUE-
the Crypt colors....BET Security kept them separated;
they did a really good job. Most people NEVER return
to their seats. It was an ABSOLUTE MESS!!!

korkscru 06-26-2002 02:26 PM

I tell ya, SOME Black people just don't know how to act. What was the NEED for all of that mess between Snoop and Suge? You see, this is why I don't USUALLY watch the black awards shows. We can't do NOTHING without SOMEBODY messing it up. But I guess that THIS show was okay. Gosh, hearing those old EWF songs makes me want to go out and by their "Best of EWF" CD.

TLAW 06-26-2002 03:26 PM

The more I see BET, and the more I hear of the fiascos it puts out, the more I am convinced that it is more of a liability to the advancement of the people it professes to "entertain".

Not at all surprising. Bob Johnson, BET's founder, has said that his goal is to run a profit maximization business, period. He has always stressed that he is a capitalist, not a social service provider. And if BET puts out lowbrow entertainment, so be it.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-ser...ries98/bet.htm

When he came on the stage, he had this look on his face like "Dayum! I don't want to be here!"...Maybe he's in it for the almighy dollar but I gather he's not proud of his work...

Overall, the show was much better than last year (Whitney's Fiasco). Usher's performance was tight--he's really talented and I love seeing him perform (He's good live too). Luda was the BOMB! I was getting my groove on (dancing--not that other kind of grooving ;)) in my bedroom!

Both of Free's outfits look like she bought them from the $1 store to wear out hooking on Sunset Blvd. She always dresses ugly. Mary dresses liek she shops at the swapmeet almost everytime I see her (minus some of her videos, when as someone else mentioned, she looks nice). I think at awards events she lets her 3 yr.old lil cousin pick out her fits. She needs a good stylist--and good friends to tell her azz that she "be lookin' ghe-tto!" :D

EWF was the bomb too! How come I'm only 21 but I knew ALL of those songs, and others! That's how you know you grew up in a black family! I love the oldies. I listen to the oldies radio station where I live and even sometimes to the digital cable oldies music channel!

Muhammed Ali had me cracking up! He told it like it is!

And, India Arie was being dramatic about her award. "I'm not used to this [receiving awards at awards shows]...I can't think right now..." I kind of think she should be insulted, b/c it seems like BET was giving out pity awards--not to say that the artisits did not deserve them, but their motives for giving awards to certain people--Will Smith for "Ali"; India Arie, etc.--seemed suspect. But I am glad that she has gottem some recognition. She plays 7 instruments! Gone on girl!

Lastly, anywhere Suge Knight goes, trouble follows. He has issues, anyway. How are you going to be a blood and have crips on your record label? I'm glad Snoop did not partake in the foolishness, yet didn't "go out like a punk" either. Suge's just mad that he doesn't have anyone on his label anymore. Can you say "Hater"!

I don't know if Philip Bailey was the first to sing "Reasons", I do know he is the one that sings it in the concert version everybody knows ( you know the one where he goes back and forth against the sax player?) I thought the they may have missed a cue because the song seemed like it was going to fast and maybe he didn't get a chance to catch his breath.

korkscru 06-27-2002 10:19 AM

Phillip Bailey IS one of the original singers for EWF. Maurice White started the band and sang as lead singer until.... But Phil was always the one singing the parts with the high notes. Plain and simple, Phil is no longer a spring chicken. His voice (as well as Maurice's and a lot of other "old schoolers") is not what it used to be. That comes with the territory. But the performance the other night was wonderful. I was wondering where all of the other band members are? EWF was a very BIG band. They had it all...horns, precussions, bass, etc. They didn't use any modern-day stuff like they do now. That's what made them (along with a lot of other bands like The Commadores, Kunfunction, Franky Beverly and MAZE, etc.) so unique.

Unfortunately, that's not the case. Luda did not get to follow that trend. And I really don't sweat him just because he's repping home (Banneker C/O '95...what?). I think he's an excellent lyricist just because he is one of the best at playing with words.

That's unfortunate that all of that went down with Suge. Then again, drama follows him everywhere. If I was in the audience, I would have been one of the folks walking away, too. I knew something had happened b/c you could see several people walking around which is a no-no for awards shows. Basically, we can tell that they're not aiming to be the Essence Awards or the NAACP Image awards. More performing than anything. Bless 'em all.
