Food Poisioning!

LAWD LAWD LAWD LAWD LAWD LAWD! http://www.plauder-smilies.com/crying.gif

Has anyone ever had food poisioning??? And what from????

This is my Sad story:

Tuesday I was in a good mood and didn't feel like cooking. So I found some smoked Oysters in the pantry, busted out the hot sauce and crackers, ate that, and went to bed.

AND I'VE BEEN JACKED UP EVER SINCE!! http://www.plauder-smilies.com/puke.gif

My fellow Greeks I feel like I want....to....DIE!

I thought it would go away after a few days, but it got WORSE on thursday!

Pepto Bismol? Didn't work!
Alka seltzer? NOPE!
Nyquil? PUH-LEASE!

I had to go to the big dog's and finally go to the doctor on Friday. He gave me this little pill that is the strongest pill on the market, and I'm GETTING THERE, but I'm still at home on a saturday night not quite ready to face the world.

Why didn't someone tell me it was this bad???

I'm never eating food again(dramatic sign and falls on bed with hand over my forehead).

Yes, two years ago. From some veggies at the cafeteria from my school.

It was pretty traumatic. It effected me for three months. Like you I didn't want to eat anything. I loss like 15 pounds. My doc prescribed me Prevacid, some anti-biotics, and something to calm my nerves. The meds did wonders.

PM_Mama00 04-14-2002 01:52 AM

Well, I'm not sure if it was food poisoning or the dirty pool water that I accidentally swallowed. I had the worst ever stomach ache, had to drive from Bowling Green Ohio to Downriver Detroit. Got home, puked. Sat in pain for hours, finally my mom took me to the docs, puked on the way there. Felt like I was gona die!!! Doc said I had a bacterial infection, but it felt like someone poisoned me. She gave me a shot for some kind of flu that was going around. Apparently a lot of people were coming down with this weird flu, so I got one of the last things of the shot. Felt a little better but I didn't eat for a few days. Crackers and Vernors...yep I lived on that. Try warm Vernors (or Canada Dry if thats what you have). You'll be fine in a couple days!

Peaches-n-Cream 04-14-2002 01:56 AM

Food poisoning is really bad! My sister had food poisoning from leftover Chinese food. It was awful, and nothing helped. Just like you she was sick for three days before she went to the doctor. He said that if she ever got that sick again, she should go to the hospital immediately.

bruinaphi 04-14-2002 04:36 AM

I got food poisoning last summer. Here's my advice:

1. Drink as much as you can. Gatorade and juice are good b/c they compensate for the fact that you aren't keeping anything down. Make sure you are ALWAYS drinking.

2. Follow the BRAT diet: bread, rice, applesauce, toast. These foods are very mild on the system and will help you get back into normal eating habits.

3. Stay away from meds that your doctor didn't prescribe or recommend to you. Over the counter stomach medicines are not designed to deal with bacterial infections like you get from food poisoning and can actually make you worse rather than better.

Good luck!
Laura

P.S. If you get signs of dehydration and can't keep liquids down for more than 48 hours go back to the doctor and get an IV.

aggieAXO 04-14-2002 07:31 AM

I know I treat 4 legged creatures but....

Pedialyte is best as it does not have sugars that can further dehydrate you by causing diuresis, plus it is a balanced electrolyte solution. Gatorade has sugar in it :).

aephi alum 04-14-2002 08:20 AM

I've had food poisoning, but thankfully only minor cases that went away in a couple of days. (knock on wood)

The best thing to have is water. You're losing a lot of fluids and you have to replenish those. Ginger ale is good; so is chicken broth, and Pedialyte. Go easy on your stomach. When you're feeling a little better, you may want to try baby food.

Hope you're feeling better soon. :)

I got food poisoning from TGI Friday's. I have a very zen sort of control over vomiting so I can keep it down FOREVER before I cave in (this is the only time I have puked since 5th grade!). Anyway, my whole digestive system just stopped. I felt horrible and could feel the food just sitting like 2 days later. Finally I nearly fainted and then it started...ahem...out of both ends. It ended up affecting my stomach for over a month. My appetite was gone. I went from 125 pounds to 110 in that month! I actually had to wean myself back onto food by drinking small sips of water and like, half a cracker. I would literally sit down and say "okay, I am going to eat this cracker and then take a sip of water". It was really bad. It was embarassing too 'cause I would go out with my sisters and they would ask why I didn't touch my food and they started trying to get me to eat 'cause they thought I was anorexic! HELLO!!!!!!!

catlady 04-14-2002 01:49 PM

I've never had food poisoning before, but someone once told me that if you suspect anything, eat yogurt because it's supposed to make it not as bad. Someone else even told me that it's supposed to help prevent food poisoning but I don't know.

ZTAngel 04-14-2002 02:42 PM

I heard that yogurt is good for you after you have been vomiting. I heard that it is because through vomiting you lose the "good" bacteria that is in your digestive track and yogurt, which contains bacteria and yeast, puts it back in your system. I may be wrong though.

Poor SOROR:(

I have never had food poisoning but from you all's stories I have not missed any thing.

bruinaphi 04-14-2002 04:01 PM

I was told not to eat yogurt or any dairy products at all while I was sick. I also had a very severe case of food poisoning and wound up having to take two courses of cipro before I was able to eat or function.

I don't know exactly where I got food poisoning, it was somewhere in Ireland within 24 hours of when I got on the airplane to come home. They think I may have gotten it from contaminated water.

To make it worse, the bacteria I got is a reportable disease in the US so I had to deal with calls fromt he health department and all sorts of other stuff. It was one of the worst experiences of my life.

I hope you feel better soon.

TigerGirl52 04-14-2002 05:23 PM

First off...I just want to tell you I feel so bad for you. I know how horrible food poisoning can be and I hope you have a speedy recovery. The one time I got food poisoning I seriously thought I was going to die. It was about 5 or 6 years ago on Christmas Day night. I honestly think it was from something I had eaten on Christmas Eve. My stepmom usually cooks alot of seafood dishes on Christmas Eve and I think something may have been contaminated. I woke up the next night writhing in pain. My mom tried to get me back to sleep but it just wasn't happening. She honestly thought I was having an appendicitis because of the way I was holding my side. But to make a long story short....after being in severe pain for about 30 minutes I couldn't take it any longer. I ending up puking for pretty much the rest of the night. The toilet and I became very good friends that night because I had to sleep on the bathroom floor. LOL. I don't think I moved for about a week after that. My body was absolutely exhausted and I was extremely dehydrated. My advice is just get plenty of rest and slowly VERY slowly start weaning yourself back onto food. Hope you feel better SOON!!!

I'm lucky enough to have never really had food poisoning. But I wanted to comment on the yogurt thing. Ok, BAD idea to eat or drink any kind of dairy product when you have an upset stomach, or even just a fever for that matter. But they're right to a degree... it would be a good thing for you to eat AFTER your food poisoning is over.

I've never eaten eggs sunnyside up, and as a bio major who has recently taken more of an interest in microbiology, I wouldn't even want to try it! Eggs and meats have to be cooked to a high enough temperature to kill all the bacteria, so if you want to be safe you might want to stay away from stuff that's not cooked all the way through.

Just be careful, and I hope you feel better soon deltaqte!

AchtungBaby80 04-14-2002 07:18 PM

Oh, no, I feel so sorry for all of you! I have a debilitating fear of getting food poisoning (which is why I hardly at anything freshman year) because I hate having my stomach upset. *shiver* I'm just glad those of you who got sick are all right--I'm one of those people who thinks that if you even suspect it's food poisoning, you need to hie your arse to the doctor pronto! So remember that. :)

lifesaver 04-15-2002 03:50 AM

Only had it once. Oh GOHD IT WAS BAD!!!

Mexican dish at a former local favorite place. Went withthe staff at lunch, the lady from Bangladesh had the SAME meal I did, didnt even phase her.

By 7 pm I was in agony. By 10 PM I was in Dante's Hell. Fortunately I had enough first aid training from lifeguarding to know that I was experiencing SERIOUS dehydration, dizzynous, tingeling in my arms and legs, and palpatations. I knew to get to the ER fast. It took 4 litres of IV solution to rehydrate me - and I am not a big guy. The docs told me had I waited another 30 mins to get treatment, my kidneys would have failed. (The closest to death I think I have ever been, and the most terrifying news I have ever gotten from a doctor). I also learned that Food Poising takes about 6-8 hours to develop from ingestion. If its longer or shorter, its not food poisining. Tip o'the day.

You cant do much about food from eating out (except make sure all foods are well done, eggs are scrambeled or over medium.) But at home, a few USDA tips serve us all well, 1) 2, 2, 4 rule. Leftovers can only stay out for 2 hours from serving time to the time they need to be refridgerated. store leftovers in containers no deeper than 2 inches. (example, thake the meat off of the turkey and place it in a container, versus the whole bird covered with foil in the fridge) and keep leftovers in the fridge no longer than 4 days before you throw them away.

Also little things help immensely - wash your hands before you eat. Weither at home or away, and be careful for cross contamination around poultry and meats.

Finally, remember - "WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT." Its not worth the risk.

DELTAQTE 04-15-2002 04:07 AM

wow

I am drinking water! but as soon as I drink, I need to go to the "ladies room".

I am better, but I do feel weak and a little dizzy sometimes. I am going to the doctor again on Monday for a check up. But the pills did help.

One time I got dehydrated and had to get some IV. The hospital tried to charge me 600 dollars for those 2 hours. To this day I have refused to pay that bill, nobody gonna pimp me for IV, no sir!(nods head)

Food poisoning...been there done that. It sucks! My most recent experience came from bad mayonnaise that I was eating on fries at a deli near my school. What helped me was lavander herbal tea and a diet of rice and boiled carrots. The good news is that eventually it does go away.

Dionysus 04-29-2004 09:42 AM

Disclaimer: I'm NOT asking medical advice for myself, I'm asking it for my mom, who refuses to go to the ER or call her doctor...

She's been throwing up since like 12 or 1, I think her last time was 6 am. We don't know if she has a stomach virus or food poisioning. She doesn't have and pain nor fever, just digestive upset and fatigue. The last thing she had was Quizno's. Has anyone ever gotten food poisioning from any sub place? I wouldn't be surprised, because sub places tend to be unsanitary by my standards. If she doesn't get any better within a few hours, I'm calling her doctor anyway.

Lady Pi Phi 04-29-2004 09:47 AM

I have food poisoning right now.

I've had it several times beofre. It usually goes away in a couple of days.

I just drink lots of liquids. Make sure I stay hydrated.

swissmiss04 04-29-2004 09:49 AM

Have I had food poisoning? Have I? That's like asking the Pope "So, your Holiness, have you ever prayed before?" I've had it like 5 times in my lifetime. The worst was my freshman year in college when I braved the wilderness of the cafeteria. I ate Chinese and then played flag football. That night I literally could not stop puking. The next day I made my way to my car (crawled down the hall to the elevator and then crawled until I made it outside. In my pajamas. I was a sight). I went to the health center and they started some rehydration IVs. It took 3 or 4 days to recover.
My best advice is this: broth, ginger ale, and crackers. See if you can get some Reglan from your doctor. It'll quit the vomiting and knock you out. Good stuff.

I think you can get food poisoning from just about anywhere. I read an article that said that most food poisoning is caused by unsanitary health practices by the food preparer (i.e. not washing hands after using the restroom-ewwww!!!), but I think food which has been sitting out or has gone bad can also be a culprit. She (or someone less pukey) should call the Quizno's and inform them that this happened and if you feel like taking her to the Dr. then by all means-do it!

Could be a stomach flu. Those suck just as much and there's no drugs to make you feel better since it's viral. The stomach flus I've had involve just throwing up and not...ahem...disposing of your waste from your other end like you would with food poisoning. They usually do not come with a fever but I would still advise your mom to go to the doctor and get it checked out.

I've gotten a stomach flu twice and it is AWFUL! Most recently, I was plagued with it the summer before my senior year in college. I was working as a Public Relations intern at Siemens. My boss and I had a meeting with the CEO. We were sitting in the conference room and I just felt like absolute crap. My boss wrote on a piece of paper 'You look green. Are you ok?'. I just tried to get through the meeting but I was completely out of it because a) I was trying to keep myself from barfing and b) I felt very lightheaded. I had all these bigwigs asking me questions and I had to try so hard to concentrate on getting the words out rather than vomiting. As soon as that meeting was over, I made a mad dash for the bathroom. I probably sat in there puking for 30 minutes straight. My boyfriend came and picked me up. He even brought a plastic bag for me for the car ride. He's so sweet! ;) For the next 3 days, I didn't move from the bathroom floor. I felt like death.
I found that Pedialyte is God's gift to humanity. When I was finally able to hold some liquids down, that stuff made me feel 10 times better.

My boyfriend ended up with Salmonella poisoning from some eggs a few years ago. It really did him in. The doctors gave him Cipro to help kick it.

KSigkid 04-29-2004 10:28 AM

Had it twice; once from stuffed mushrooms and once from Chinese take-out. Not fun at all.

SouthrnBelle 04-29-2004 11:45 AM

I bought some ribs from this highly respected BBQ place "DOWN HERE" should have known better. Anywhoo, I ate half the slab and froze the other half. When I unthawed the other half and stuck them in the oven about a week later I didn't know they would be a threat to my life! About 2 hrs after eating them I couldn't even sit up, or lay down, or walk. I was shaking and I went from hot and cold, I was sweating. The only thing that helped was sitting next to the window w/ the cold air blowing on my face.

I finally managed to puke it out. The pain was awful. I must have said "Lord have mercy" a million times. The next day I was fine.

I will never buy meat from them again.

AOTTAdvisor 04-29-2004 12:37 PM

I was just thinking about this because I got food poisioning from Publix sushi and I finally had sushi again last night(from a restuarant--NOT Publix) and I have been nervous all day!
Like I said, I grabbed some sushi from Publix(grocery store) to eat for dinner one Friday night. I was staying in to study and it sounded yummy. Ate it, studied, went to bed around 11. Woke up at 1am and was so nausous, I thought I was going to die. CRAWLED to the toilet and puked up everything. Layed on the floor for awhile and felt better and crawled back to bed and fell asleep. Next day, still feel REALLY nausous but think I am okay. Around 2pm, start feeling stomach "gurglings". Around 2:30pm, I begin to bond with the toilet again, but from a different angle then before. This lasts for about 2 hours, off and on. At this point, I CHUG some pepto bismol, hoping for the best. Around 6, feel better. I do not eat anything and drink some water and go to bed early. Wake up at 3 am and proceed to toilet again. This goes on for 2 more days!! I would take Pepto or Immodium, it would last its appropriate 4-5 hours, wear off, and I would bond with the toilet again. I literally thought my insides were rotting. It was the WORST experience of my life. So, PLEASE feel better DeltaQTE--it will end sometime soon...

dzsaigirl 04-29-2004 06:48 PM

The only store I will eat sushi from is Whole Foods for just that reason!

As for food poisoning from sub places, I know quite a few people who have gotten food poisoning from Subway...

I know I posted a loooooong time ago, but someone asked me what I had eaten at Friday's. I believe (this was 5 years ago, mind you...) that it was a salad and a club sandwich. Man, that brings back AWFUL memories :(

Dionysus 04-29-2004 09:07 PM

Yep, it was a stomach virus. I never knew it can get that severe. We had to take her to the ER so she can get IV, because she was really dehydrated. Luckily, she's ok now. :)

Just let me say..if you are craving orange juice AND Doritos at the same time, do not cave in! DON'T EAT THEM TOGETHER!

Trust me, it is bad, bad, bad when you throw up.
