Opening for expansion
FYI...Miami University (of Ohio) is opening for expansion. There are currently 17 groups there so not too many missing but I know the Panhel passed the vote this Monday.
|
Tri Sigma will be presenting there in the next few weeks! This is where our Kappa Chapter was and we are so excited to present, hopefully we'll be able to bring back our Kappa Chapter. I can't wait for our presentation, we're thrilled! Our National President will be there and other Council members as well.
Ever Forward |
Miami is such a beautiful school (it was one of my college choices) and i know what whatever sorority is chosen will have a very strong greek presence on campus to join (as long as they remember DZ runs Miami - ok i'm totally kidding, but it is our founding school ;))
|
wow
wow-my friend Kate just was initiated into Kappa Delta at Miami this spring! She loves it!
|
what sororities are going to be presenting there? do you know?
nichole |
I only know that Tri Sigma is!!!
|
In case anyone is interested, here are the NPC groups already at Miami:
Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Epsilon Phi Alpha Gamma Delta Alpha Omicron Pi Alpha Phi Alpha Xi Delta Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Gamma Delta Zeta Gamma Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Pi Beta Phi Zeta Tau Alpha This leaves ASA, AST, DPhiE, Theta Phi Alpha, Tri-Sigma, Sigma Kappa, SDT, Phi Sigma Sigma and Phi Mu. |
I know that Sigma Kappa and Alpha Sigma Alpha "closed down" there not too long ago so I'm guessing they have to a wait a few years before they recolonize on that campus? I e-mailed Phi Mu Nationals and asked if we were going to present...I'll let ya'll know! TRI-SIGMA: Good Luck!
|
Phi Mu....I just got off the phone with our Extension Director and know that we are going, and I think Theta Phi Alpha and AST and Phi Mu (I'm not 100% positive, we were talking about so many campuses...but I'm pretty sure! It should be such a great time. We are all so excited. Good luck to you too :)
We'll all know by late April! |
Phi Mu used to be at Miami too. I think they closed in the early 90's (could have been earlier)
I know that Sigma Kappa (which closed last summer) is not presenting. Neither is ASA. Good luck to all the groups presenting. It will be an exciting time for the campus. |
Miami ASA
PhiMuLady - ASA (I am assuming the same w/ SK) did not close there for disciplinary reasons, i.e. nationals did it not the school, so there is really not a set period of time where we would have to "stay out" of Miami. If we wanted to present for expansion we could, but at the time it might not be feasible. That is our decision to make to present or not - it's not an NPC rule or anything. I would be kind of wary, actually, seeing as 2 groups have closed in so short a time. That to me says that the Panhellenic has some work to do as far as inter-org support is concerned.

I wasn't implying
I wasn't implying disaplinary actions are what caused Sigma Kappa and Alpha Sigma Alpha to no longer be on Miami's campus...sorry if it came out that way. I was just saying that generally chapters wait more than a few years to recolonize...not under any written NPC rule or otherwise...that just seems to be the pattern. I am still not sure on Phi Mu presenting...I received an e-mail from our expansion director saying that they have not yet received anything in mail from Miami Panhellenic regarding a possible presentation for colonizing. I know that Phi Mu generally starts a chapter when a student at a particular school does all the proper paperwork to bring Phi Mu to campus or our national office decides to present to a school's panhellenic system in order to be approved for colonization.(whereas Phi Mu brings people in to do recruitment, interviews etc etc) Or respond to an invitation to present and colonize.
In regards to the Panhellenic system at Miami, I had a friend participate in formal recruitment this spring and she ended up being what is known as being cross cut in the computer during bid matching. She did not receive a bid from any of her prefs and was told by her Rho Chi that sometimes it happens when a potential member is "lower" on the bid list for whatever sorority. She was apparently low on all 3 of her prefs bid lists. However, she did recieve a snap bid from Kappa Delta and was very happy! infact, she was initiated about 2 weeks ago:) Her Rho Chi also revealed that a very high number of girls had rushed at Miami and as a result more potential members were released and did not get matched. The greek system is big there and I am not sure how Panhellenic does with that large number of sororities. alright I'm done |

Generally we wait a year (I think it used to be 4 years until so many people got on the 5-6-7 year plan) until after the last remaining active has graduated to recolonize, but if there is a lot of interest at the school and we think it could work I'd assume we or any other group would go for it. It's definitely not a black & white kinda thing, each situation is different. My point was before I went in there - recolonizing or new - I would want to take a very serious look at why these 2 other groups left in such a short window of time in the first place. |
Truthfully....I'm sure the chapters closed due to numbers. This happens all over the country. Unless you have a Panhellenic that is willing to support and help to COB or recruit or help with PR, the chapters may get low numbers and if it's a trend for 5 years or so...and they can't change it...closing a chapter is sometimes the best route. I'm not condoning it....I hate closing chapters. I even worked for Tri Delta and closed 2 chapters for them, and it sucked.
Through my mumbling, I have a point. New chapters sometimes bring a breath of fresh air. As long as their intent is not to overthrow a dying chapter it can be good. My point: For those of you who have dying chapters on campus due to low numbers? Help them before you become them! That's my message for tonight. |
No doubt TriSigmaTX!!
I am always saying that to my chapters. I looked on ths report I have and Phi Mu closed in 1995. (why I do not know) I also know that the school is looking to have presentations the week of April 22nd, which is sort of short notice in terms of extension. About 70 women were no bids this year. Some were SIP's and some maximied their choices but still did not match. Three chapters did not make quota, one was able to snap to quota, one picked up another 10 or so and I am not sure if the third got anyone via snap but did through COB. The system needs to make the top chapters release more women earlier. I think a new chapter can do well. ZTA recolonized a few years ago 1998(?) and have done very well. It will be exciting and will let you know what I hear as things happen!! |

Does anyone know how the Alpha Chi chapter there is doing?? Just a quick little question....
|
I would say rush-wise that Alpha Chi is a top quartile chapter. As far as philanthropy and campus involvement I don't know.

Good Morning!
I am delighted to hear that SSS is presenting at Miami; Good Luck to our Farmville sisters! Tracie, if you are on the presentation team make sure to go uptown and call upon Paige at Alpha House, tell her Laura from ASA sent you. (Bring your check book, she has terrific merchandise!) Paige is a Tri-Sigma. Any sorority chapter that has closed at Miami has closed due to low numbers, I know of no sorority that has closed for a disciplinary reason (fraternities - mmmm, well, that's another story....) And, Alpha Chi is a very successful chapter; ZTA recolonized their Beta Delta chapter after only one semester off campus and took Total immediately, takes Quota every year, in other words - they've done very well! Good Luck to all organizations presenting for expansion at Miami, we hope to join you again, soon. |
Thanks Miami Alpha! Actually I won't be on that presentation team. We also have (due to short notice) another presentation at Gettysburg, PA (which is awesome), and I'm leading that presentation, so I will miss Miami :(, but I'll surely tell my sisters about the store! Sounds great.
I hope it goes great, I'm so thrilled! And even though I am a full NPC supporter, I love everyone...I have a warm spot in my heart for the Farmville Four ;) |

Tracie - I thought Gettysburg had gotten rid of Greeks - are they opening up again? Or I could be thinking of Bucknell or Dickinson or F & M....they all tend to blend together in my mind once I get past Breezewood, LOL. |
SIP is Single Intentional Preference (formerly known as Suicide).
Gettysburg, I haven't read the report yet (hasn't reached my mail box), so I don't know. But, from their website, they have ADPi, DG, Chi Omega, GPhiBeta, and that's it...I'm so excited! |
Just an update...
TriSigma and Phi Mu presented this week (AST pulled out) and on Thursday the other groups on campus choose Phi Mu to return to the Miami campus (they left in 1995) I heard great things about both presentations! Congratulations Phi Mu!!! |
Congrats and best of luck to Phi Mu!! Anytime a Greek system is expanding, it puts a :) on my face.
|
I actually ended up being on the Miami presentation team. We did a great job, but they did choose Phi Mu. I'm so excited for Phi Mu, what a great campus! Hopefully next time...extension is a tough game, you get one, you lose one....
It's so great that our Greek Systems are growing though. Love, |
