Guess who I met....

This week is my spring break. I came home for the week thinking I was going to hit the beach and have a grand ol' time. Well, on my way into Corpus last Friday, I stopped at the courthouse, where my mom works, to tell her hi. I worked at the courthouse before I left for college, so I thought it would be nice to go and tell them hello as well.

Well, while at the courthouse visiting, my ex-supervisor offered me a 1-week spring break job. I haven't been working since I've been up in San Antonio for school, so I thought it would be a good idea to make a little money. (Thought it would make my parents happy...haha) Anyhow....back to my story....

Since I wanted to put something A-Phi up on my desk, and I really didn't have anything with me, I decided to put up an A-Phi wallpaper on my computer desktop. There was a new Distric Attorney who I met today when she was in my office as the D.A. for our court hearings. Well, today, I was sitting at my desk issuing warrants. She'd been in the office for about two hours when all of a sudden, she comes up to me and gives me a huge hug. I thought to myself, "Why is this girl giving me a hug?!" She told me, "I am one of your sisters!! I am an Alpha Phi!!"

I met another A-Phi!!!

She is the first A-Phi I have ever met "out in the real world," so you can imagine that I was really excited about that. She told me that her desk was full of bears and A-Phi stuff. I told her the reason my desk wasn't like that is because my job at the courthouse was a 1-week job during my spring break.

Hopefully I will be working at the courthouse back home this summer, so I will be seeing a lot more of her since she is the DA of our court.

Sorry for the long story. I am just so excited to have run into an A-Phi.

I was at a family reunion in Cleveland this past summer. I had my lavalier on when my dad's cousin walked over to me and said, "You're a ZTA? I was a ZTA!" Turns out that a great aunt and another one of my father's cousins were also ZTA's at various schools in Ohio. It was really cool to know that I had family members who are also ZTA's.
I've also met a lot of ZTA's while working in sales. Women will look at my lavalier and then tell me that they were ZTA's at such-in-such school. I met a founding sister of my ZTA chapter while working at a retail store in Orlando.
Also, there was a New Year's party I had gone to a year ago. It was a random party in Miami that I got invited to through a friend of a friend. I was talking to one of my friends and starting talking at ZTA when the woman who was hosting the party said to me, "I overheard you talking about ZTA..." and she proceeded to tell me about how she was a ZTA at Salisbury State University in Maryland. How's that for coincidential?! :)

I work for a state law enforcement agency. A few years ago I was teaching a class at a police academy and struck up a conversation with a female officer from my hometown (not my HOME town). Anyway, turns out we are both Alpha Gamma Deltas from the same chapter!!!

About 3 weeks later, on the way home, a lady ran into the back of my car at an intersection. Guess who the officer was that came to fill out the accident report!!

Whenever I saw a PD car, I hoped that it was her, but then again, not if I was going to be given a ticket ((luckily that didn't happen!)

A couple of days ago, I was going through a list of local AGDs around WGa. I found an email of someone that looked familiar. Turns out she and I were living in her chapter's house in 1976 when I working in that town for the summer!

over christmas break, before i was initiated i was at a party with a friend. i was talking to this girl, and she asked me what fraternity i was in. i said "phi psi." just then this guy who was just a few feet away looked at me and said "hey, i'm a phi psi too." it was cool. he had not been initiated yet either so we couldn't give the handshake or anything. he goes to uc irvine, and my chapter and uci have been getting a lot closer this semester. so when ever we go up to party with them, or when they come down, we hang out. it is really.

This one was totally random...

My husband and I had just moved to a new town, and we were looking for a synagogue to join. One synagogue not far from us had "new member tea's" every so often, and we decided to go to one. There were 3 or 4 potential new member families (just the adults) and the rabbi, president, and a couple of other officers, including the head of membership. So I find myself talking to the membership head, and she mentioned that her day job was being VP of membership for a national sorority.

"Oh, which one?" I asked.

"Alpha Epsilon Phi."

After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I told her that I'm an AEPhi too, and we had a good chat while my husband looked confused. :) She mentioned that she hardly ever mentioned her sorority position outside of sorority business - she wasn't wearing her badge or anything. *shrug*

Come to think of it, that's the only time I've met a sister (and known it) outside of sorority-related events.

chapter coincidence...

I went alum 5 years ago, and my grandlittle joined my 'family tree' the following semester. I was still living in the town where I went to college, so I went to visit and meet her. Well, my husband (at the time) had family who shared her last name, and I mentioned that to her. She didn't think they were related, but after we had moved out of the area, I got a phone call from her. She had done some research into her family, and it turned out that she and my (then) husband were distant cousins. :)

I've told this story a long time ago, but it's still my favorite!

The summer inbetween my freshman and sophomore year of college I ran a concession stand out at the lake ballpark. We asked volunteers to come in to help out. One Saturday morning I was wearing my Chi Omega windbreaker while working in the stand. In came a couple of my mom volunteers. After some time of chit chat I had one of them finally exclaim that she was a Chi Omega. Then the others chimmed in that they too were Chi Omegas! There we were, 4 Chi Omegas in 1 room!
By far the neatest experience!

Two situations:

A few weeks ago I was on a flight from Salt Lake to Denver. Those of us who fly a lot tend not to get into conversations with other folks on the plane, but as we were on final into Denver the guy in the next seat and I started to chat. As we were leaving the jetbridge, I guess I said something about volunteering for my Fraternity. He asked which one -- you guessed it, he is a Delt Alum from Kent State.

Probably the biggest surprise came on my oldest daughter's last day of classes before graduation at my and my wifes' Alma Mater. The head of her department, her advisor and a TA from the department were there chatting with us. I had known the first two for a couple of years before our daughter transfered there. I had a golf shirt on with the Delt Crest. Her advisor said, "Hmmm, that's a Delt shirt. I'm a Delt and so is Larry (the department head). Then the TA said, "So am I." All three of them from different chapters.

I was interviewing for residency my senior year of medical school, and our medical school sponsors a "host" program where med school alums offer a place to stay for students interviewing in their area. I was on my 3rd week of being away from home, sick of living out of my suitcase, and missing my husband like crazy. I went to Tucson and showed up at the alum's house that I was going to stay at. I was sort of nervous about staying with people I didn't even know, but I was also sick to death of hotels and terribly lonely! Turns out that the wife of the alum was a Pi Phi from my hometown! She was a wonderful hostess, and we had a great time swapping Pi Phi stories. It sure was nice to find a sister so far from home....

Last summer I worked at Gap, and I would constantly see girls coming in wearing DZ letters and theme shirts... and of course being the all-loving DZ sister than I am, I would always be a total spaz and go up to them and say something like, "Youre a DZ, So am I!!!! What Chapter are you at? Ohmygod, do you know...." haha

My favorite meeting an AGD story is this...

I went to high school with a girl named Laura who was one grade ahead of me. We were kinda close, even went abroad together, but hadn't seen each other since I graduated. Then last year, my junior year in college, I happened to run into her at a mall back home. We started talking, catching up, and she mentioned she had joined a sorority. I said, "wow, so did I, what sorority?" And she said, "Alpha Gamma Delta." I just pulled out my lavaliere and we both stared at each other open jawed! We stared e-mailing after that and I was very excited to see her at IRD that year...I can't believe I didn't see her the year before!

Katey Alpha Gam 03-15-2002 12:30 PM

Before I was even initiated, my mom and I were at the HUGE outlet mall in Michigan (Birch Run for anyone who knows the area) and my mom and I went to Pizza Uno. We were standing in line waiting to be seated and my mom is one of the chattiest ppl you would ever meet. Well she was talking to this mom and dad and daughter about my age and for some reason she mentioned that we were up scouring the stores for an all white dress for me b/c I was going to be initiated into a sorority and that is what we need to wear and the girl was like "I'm in a sorority too, what are you?" and I was like Alpha Gamma Delta and she was a sister from Northwood University!!!

My friend Matt from back home, his G/F's sister is also an Alpha Gam

My FAVORITE story tho was when I went to Chicago. I do Model United Nations conferences and we had to go to Chicago in November for one. We all decided to take the train and I was wearing my AGD windbreaker as I was leaving. As I was getting off the train I head this older woman say "Was that an Alpha Gamma Delta jacket?" and I was like "yes it is!" and she goes "I am soooo happy to hear that, I am an Alpha Gam from Michigan State" I talked with her for a minute "At the annoyance of 6 out of 7 of the people I was with b/c one was a Sig Ep and totally understood) the nicest thing was that she said she was proud that she met an undergrad that seemed like such a sweet and smart girl and that AGD was still a sorority of wonderful women!!!" YAY ALPHA GAMS

At Disney last year, I had on my Pi Phi shirt and as I was stepping into a boat on the Pirates ride, the girl who helped us in exclaimed, "I'm a Pi Phi too! Florida Epsilon chapter!" and as our boat jerked away, I was calling back, "I'm Alabaaaamma Gaaammma!"

But she was gone when we got back.:(

DeltAlum 03-15-2002 04:59 PM

This is not a personal story, but one I remember being told.

A Delt alum and his wife were diving somewhere -- can't remember where. He had a Delt Crest tattoo on his shoulder.

Another diver motioned him to the surface and introduced himself as another Delt.

deltaphi94 03-15-2002 06:45 PM

I had to take a standardized test before going into a field experience, and it wasn't available at my school. So, I went to a campus closer to my parents' house. I walked into the room and took a seat. As I looked around the room, I noticed a girl in the row of seats ahead of me had a symbol of Phi Mu on the back of her shirt. As we were leaving for break for a couple of hours, I spoke to her and told her we were sisters. Turned out, we both held the same position in our respective chapters.

TriSigmaTX 03-15-2002 07:30 PM

It's not my story, but a great one.

We just started a new colony and they're about to be Installed at Sam Houston State University. The new Recruitment Director there was home for the weekend cleaning out things with her mom in their attic. They got to this box and out fell a little Tri Sigma new member pin! She was so ecstatic! It happened to be her Grandmother's. Of course she's wearing it right now. She had no clue she was a legacy. They can't find her grandmother's badge (they're checking for it though).

So cool!

XO_Princess 03-15-2002 07:44 PM

I was standing in one of the many lines during orientation to nursing school, and one of the girls behind me asked me a question. As I turned around to answer her, I noticed that she was wearing a sliver bracelt with Chi Omega letters on it. So, I asked if she was a Chi O-she said yes, of course-and I totally freaked out! I was like, me too!! Then the girl behind her, was like-me too!! It was crazy.

After my freshman year, I went back home and worked at an amusement park. I was running one of the rides when an older guy comes walking up to the booth. He points to my T-shirt and said "Oh, you're in Kappa Sigma? How do you like it." I started talking to him, telling him how I had just been initiated, and he kept asking me stuff about it. I asked him if he knew anyone in Kappa Sig, and he said "Yeah, actually, I'm a Kappa Sig - I just wanted to see what you thought of it." It was really cool - he had pledged back in the 50s, so it was great to be a new brother meeting someone who had been a brother for so long. I've met random other brothers over the past couple of years, whether around Boston, in airports, or the such, but that story sticks out in my mind.

Didn't Meet, but we saw Shaq in Clearwater one day!

nucutiepie 03-18-2002 10:39 PM

My first weekend as a Pi Phi pledge me and my boyfriend were shopping in downtown Chicago at Abercrombie. I found a sweatshirt that happened to be wine & blue and of course was exclaiming to my boyfriend how the shirt was in my colors.

Suddenly, a girl turns around and says, "Are you a pi phi? I'm a pi phi at Purdue!"

It was nice to meet a wonderful Pi Phi from somewhere else when i was first pledging!

Angie62 03-18-2002 11:00 PM

I haven't met any Alpha Phi's outside of school yet :( BUT I did meet a really sweet Chi Omega at Kaufmann's last weekend. I was wearing my letter t-shirt and the woman who was working at the register told me that one of her best friends is an Alpha Phi and she's a Chi-O. I think we held up the line talking! It was the 1st time that I'd met someone who was out of school other than my chapter's alumni group so I was so excited! Just wanted to let all the Chi Omega's know that she left me with a great impression Chi-O! :)
