Unofficial Dresscodes

This one is mainly for the ladies, but I'm sure some of the men will have something to add :D

I went to school in the south and our chapter had some pretty strict standards, some of which are below...

The traditional no white clothes or shoes after Labor Day or Before Easter.
No open toed shoes after Labor Day or Before Easter
No Nude hose

I remember one rushee & legacy came in to a party breaking all of these rules. I thought one of my sisters was going to have a heart attack ;)

PenguinTrax 03-13-2002 12:10 PM

I grew up in the Midwest and am still horrified by those that wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. I hate white shoes under any circumstances and as far as open toe shoes go, well, I"m in Florida and wear sandals about 10 months out of the year now, except for dress. I think dress sandals are silly. http://www.plaudersmilies.de/tiere/pengy.gif

FuzzieAlum 03-13-2002 12:40 PM

OK, white shoes, I know that one. But no nude hose? You can't wear black hose with everything. Please tell me that no one still thinks this is the 80s and wears hose that matches their dress!

bucutie02 03-13-2002 12:50 PM

I hate nude colored hose more than anything else!!!! I am not really sure why, but omg, i hate them!!!

Even when i was in dance, we had to wear a certain colored leotard with certain colored tights during the week. Well i hated it when we had to wear "flesh" colored tights. I loved wearing black ones. Oh and when you would stand up it was as if they tights would grab on the your legs sooo tight and it actually burned the back of your thighs!! those were not fun memories..... but my hatred for nude colored hoses started off way before dance!

Why cant you wear white after labor day?!?! Have you guys seen that commercial for like Office Max or something that shows two ladies walking down the sidewalk and all of a sudden another lady wearing all white walks past them and they are like "Oh no! Dont tell she is wearing white after Labor Day!!  "

Its pretty funny, but i still dont know why that is! I wear white capris all the time, are you guys talking about wearing all white?!?! That is pretty tacky if you ask me, but i also know that most of you wear all white for initiation which completely different, but wearing all white by choice is not my thing!

And i love sandals, they are sooo super cute! I have tons of them!!!!

AOIIBrandi 03-13-2002 12:54 PM

As for no nude hose, this is basically b/c some women have problems with matching their skin tone. There is nothing worse than someone wearing suntan colored hose when they are super pale.

Color suggestions:
black
navy
cream
champagne (one of my favorite)
brown (if it will work with the outfit)

IowaHawkeye 03-13-2002 12:59 PM

if you want to wear white in the "off" seasons i guess you'd say ;) wear what they call "winter white" or an off white color.

as for nude hose - if you can match it to your kin tone - wear it, nothing bothers me more than someone wearing too much of one damn color or odd hose colors, like purple? who wears purple hose? you don't do that - if your outfit is not a standard color, you go with nude, as long as it shows up nude and not "suntan" color - that bothers me too... lol

Peaches-n-Cream 03-13-2002 01:11 PM

What's wrong with nude hose? I am so pale that even nude hose makes my legs look tan. If I wear a strapless or short sleeved dress or top, any colored hose makes my legs and arms not match and it looks weird. I just can't help it. :(

My pet peeve fashion wise is when women wear spaghetti straps and you can see their bra straps underneath. I can't stand all these belly shirts that I see everywhere. The belly is not meant to be seen by the world except on a beach. :p

StarLightGirl 03-13-2002 01:34 PM

Spaghetti straps with bra straps showing??? People still do that??

I feel ya Cream, but I think it all depends on the "belly" itself. Now if you (not you Cream, just speaking generally), have a huge belly with rolls and stretch marks coming down on all sides and hair running from your navel down to you know where, I see where that may be a little tacky

Other pet peeves:

Socks with sandals
"psychodelic" (sp?) panty hose

I'll think of more :)
Have a great day everyone! :)

I recently bought a "winter white" dress suite-it is THE most beautiful item in my closet. Actually, winter white tends to the cream side. Stark white is another story.

As far as open toe dress sandals...
At our last ccocktail party I noticed quite a mix. Some ladies wore hose, others didn't. It seems almost contradictory to be in formal attire with escort in a tux and the lady NOT wearing hose. But SOMETIMES the best look with a particular dress is a strappy dress sandal. Oh, what's a girl to DOOOO!

AOIIBrandi 03-13-2002 02:01 PM

Cream, DKNY makes some really great skin toned sheers in multiple shades. They are kinda expensive, but I think they're worth it :D

Also, I should clarify on the white. I meant stark white, winter white and cream are fine anytime of year.

Pink&Blue 03-13-2002 02:20 PM

I grew up and still live in warm weather climate and we've never had anything against wearing white or open toed shoes all year long. When it rarely drops below 60 degrees--your wardrobe doesn't change a whole lot from season to season.

FuzzieAlum 03-13-2002 03:00 PM

It totally depends on where you live. The "no white shoes after Labor Day" rule is followed most strictly in the South. And here in Seattle, wearing colored (not nude or black) hose, even suntan hose, will get you snickers. (Cause you're trying too hard, and in Seattle, if you can't wear it with fleece, don't wear it at all! You shouldn't even be dressed up in hose anyway!)

I always wonder if women are "supposed to" wear hose with open-toed shoes? Some of my sisters say, "Oh, it's so tacky to wear any dress without hose," but I think seeing hose around the toes and covering the pedicure looks hideous.

My pet peeve: Women who wear white/cream hose in the winter when they are not even wearing a white or light outfit! Like white hose with a black skirt and shoes. Pastel hosiery makes legs look fatter, and it totally breaks up the line of the leg.

I think it's funny how rules change depending on geography. What's tacky somewhere is normal elsewhere, and what is classy in one place is tacky elsewhere. But - please, no panty lines, I don't care where you live!

I'm with you, Cream! Nude is the ONLY choice I have because I'm so pale. I wouldn't know what to do if I needed to be dressed up and they didn't exist.

The commercial mentioned before is for Office Max, and if you notice, the lady wearing white is "Kathy Ireland, Fashion expert."

juniorgrrl 03-13-2002 03:59 PM

The thing that gets me is open toed shoes and hose. Its just silly looking.

I don't like much white after labor-day/pre easter at all. For very casual things, maybe, but nothing dressy. Never white shoes, unless you're a baby or a bride.

I must admit, I'm guilty of this. One of my friends got married last year and I went to the wedding hoseless. But in my defense, it was an outdoor wedding on a 100 degree day and I was wearing open toed shoes. :)

xok85xo 03-13-2002 04:08 PM

okay..i think these are more personal fashion pet peeves, rather than dresscodes but..

socks with sandals
people wearing their socks up to their knees(hello, it's not 1972)
people that wear their socks up to their knees, and then wear shorts that are really baggy so they hit below the knee..(whats the point, put pants on..you look ridiculous)
people who go to school dressed like they are going to a club
people that don't dress for the weather..(shorts/tshirts in a snow storm etc..)
true story...my junior year of college abnormal psych class there was a "shemale" in my class..seriously, a guy living his life as a woman..anyway..well it didn't bother me that this was the way he chose to live his life, whatever, who am i to say how someone should lead their life right?..what drove me freaking crazy thought is that one day it was snowing, and he came to class in capri pants and a belly shirt..cmon now..is that really necessary??

You know they have finally made hose just for open toed shoes :) Gee, that lady made great money with that :)

Those drive me crazy too! Another one that bugs me is when girls go to basketball games dressed like they're going to the club. I know the guys on our team are hot, but they're not going to be paying attention to you no matter how you're dressed. If you want to get a date, go to the bars and give your seat to a real basketball fan!

Siobhan 03-13-2002 05:42 PM

There's nothing wrong with wearing hose with open-toed shoes (especially in a Canadian climate), as long as you have sandel foot or shadow toe hose - heck, that's why they make them. :) Also I like to wear nude or beige coloured panty hose during the winter months because between november and april I am so pale and it keeps my legs and toes warm during those slightly below zero days ;).

On another note: dark hose and light coloured shoes - don't do that. I saw a girl earlier this year with balck pantyhose and silver strappy sandels on...

What is Wrong With Greeks Wearing Nice Dress on Campus?

You can then wear your Badges or Pins!

My chapter's only rules were no hose no entrance. Oh, and khakis were semi-frowned upon only because it was too casual...unless the shoes and shirt were dressier.

I wear pantyhose with all of my opened-toed shoes. I suppose it's because of chapter meetings and in the late summer/early fall it was so hot you didn't want to wear closed-toed heels (not to mention my legs are short and look funny in closed toed heels).

Anyway, I think the worst thing I EVER saw was a women who came to apply at the jewelry store was wearing a shorts outfit with pantyhose and TENNIS SHOES. Then to top it off, she had fixed her pantyhose run with PURPLE NAIL POLISH! EW!

What a nightmare!

I am so glad you all feel this way about wearing white/open-toe shoes/hose etc. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy because I refuse to wear white, even a white blouse, between Labor Day and Easter.

I hate hose, too, they pinch and run and make my feet sweat (eurgh, betcha all wanted to know that) but if you go to school in a cold climate and have to wear a skirt for whatever reason, there aren't a lot of options. I generally prefer black to nude especially in winter, but nude doesn't bother me so much ('cause I have nice legs, thank you Grandma!). And I'd never wear hose with open-toe shoes. For any reason. Ever.

My sisters sometimes laughed at me in college (I went to a fairly laid-back university), because I wouldn't go out with a purse that didn't coordinate with my shoes.

I have two major complaints about lingerie. 1) If you're not wearing jeans or other heavyweight or patterned fabric on the bottom, GET YOURSELF A THONG!! Panty lines are the WORST! and 2) Quadraboob is not pretty. Put on your bra, then put on a tight t-shirt, then count your boobs in the mirror. If it's more than two, get thee to Victoria's Secret, you need a bigger cup size. It doesn't matter how great the rest of your clothes are if your bra doesn't fit properly. Also, the only color bra you should ever wear with a light-colored shirt is NUDE, not WHITE. White bras blend into your shirt, skin-tone bras blend into you.

Climbing down from the fashion soapbox now.

Yeah, but wearing "pin attire" to class is a lot different than getting all hoochied up to go to class (which a number of girls at my school do).

Oh yeah, and go easy on the perfume, people. My allergies and I will thank you. :)

33girl 03-13-2002 10:59 PM

I am totally anal about the no white before Easter/after Labor Day, and some of the people in my office get very dirty looks from me because of it (this goes for ivory, too). But no nude hose???!? I have an emerald green suit. What else would I wear with that? Black would look stupid. And cream hose? Gross. Let's face it if you cannot find a skin-colored hose shade to suit you out of the zillions that are on the market, I don't know how you got into college!!

You can wear sandalfoot hose w/ slight open toes (duh, that's why they are called sandalfoot!) but if the shoes are pretty much 2 straps the width of spaghetti, it will look silly. If you are going hoseless, make sure your legs are shaved & exfoliated!!

Plus if I ran my own personal hell, everyone wearing a spaghetti strap top with bra straps sticking out would be in it. Without a fan. Or beer. TACKY TACKY TACKY!!!

Oh my goodness - thanks for the laugh! Quadraboob, heehee. :D

Here's another fashion-don't-you-DARE:

Lacy bras with tight T-shirts. Man do I hate that. And for some reason it's always the girls who are a little, ahem, "top-heavy" in these teeny little shirts painted on their bodies, with their "assets" sticking out all lumpy because of the lace.

Hello! Are you enjoying your seven years of bad luck, because your mirror MUST be broken!

or, maybe, worst of all, Quadraboob in a lace bra. Please, people, seek help immediately. You're only one step away from walking around in a black bra and a white tank top.

Geez, it's not that hard to find a smooth bra if you really have to impose your tight shirt on the rest of us.

There is a girl in some of my classes who lives in a insane little world called DENIAL and refuses to admit that she has gained 20+ lbs in the last year. She wears very very tight shirts and the corresponding undergarments that fit her last year. She sits right in front of me and, seriously, between the bra cutting into her and the shirt being so darn tight, the shirt just goes down her back in ripples! Honey, none of us are supermodels, but I'm afraid that this just isn't the best look for you.

SparkliiQTMTSU 03-14-2002 01:35 AM

hahaha some of these are just hilarious...I do know about the whole no white thing but no nude hose??!! OMG i am soo white i have to wear em lol...we have to dress up for meetings but other than that im a casual girl who loves to just wear a cute top and nice jeans or kakis!

Nichole

justamom 03-14-2002 08:10 AM

Well, since we are talking about some PERSONAL dress codes, I have two that really- REALLY get to me.

One is wearing the WRONG style for the WRONG body type-
Flat chests wearing tops meant for more curves or pencil thin girls in tight-tight pants-especialy if they are black.
The opposite is just as true-full figures wearing tubes-halters etc.
THE WRONG SIZE/STYLE CLOTHES!

This one is the BIGGIE though-
When fashion becomes a uniform. Say you walk into a club and EVERY SINGLE GIRL has on the same thing (like those one shoulder tops) I'm not refering to the season's fashion like bell bottoms or capri-mostly picking ONE style out of the season's offering. BUT-it's far worse when the older ladies do it. When the floral skirts had a "matching" sweater, EVERYONE would wear a version to the League meetings...It was like a bunch of penguins following each other around.

I'd rather see individuaity in style than mass production repeated ad nauseum-as long as it FITS! (Oh, and men wearing black socks with shorts....)

KillarneyRose 03-14-2002 12:17 PM

Can I talk about two looks I can't stand?

First of all, those "seasonal" sweaters. Like a Halloween sweater made from black yarn with orange jack-o-lanterns on them or a Christmas sweater in green yarn with santas or reindeers on them. I hope I don't offend anyone who has them, I guess I just prefer something a little more understated.

Pleated pants are another one. I think people wear them thinking they'll cover their "pooch" but all that happens is the pooch fills up the pleats and causes them to expand and that calls attention to the body part they're trying to hide.

Oh, and I have one more. Thankfully, its day has come and gone, and I hope it never comes back again: High heels with jeans!

AlphaChiS2K 03-14-2002 04:49 PM

I HATE pantyhose. Absolutely hate them. Refuse to wear them. The crotch usually stays somewhere around the middle of my thighs, and I am forever pulling them up or waddling around like a damn duck. I'm really small (5 feet, 103 lbs) so even "A" sizes are usually too big on me. Plus I'm Irish, which translates to casper-the-ghost fair-skin, so even the nudest of nude hose causes color disparity with the rest of my body. When I say I never wear hose, I mean I NEVER wear hose. If it's cold and I wear a skirt, it's usually knee-length or slightly above with knee-or-calf-length high-helled boots and a sweater- looks stylish and pulled together, not trashy. However, I'm a total wimp when it comes to cold weather, so usually I'm in pants. In the spring and summer, I wear skirts a lot, but they're almost always around knee-length and I wear them with cute flipflops or open-toed sandals.

I HATE HATE HATE bra straps with spaghetti-strap tanks. Why didn't these people's mothers inform them of this, the most basic of all fashion rules?

Also-

Thong lines. Come on, you're smart enough to wear a thong in the effort of preventing panty lines. If you can STILL SEE THE THONG, it means a)your clothes are too damn tight, or b) go without, if the outfit allows (pants, long dress).

RockChalk 03-14-2002 04:51 PM

I can't stand those things either! There's no need to be that cutesy. And besides, why buy something you can only wear once a year?

ZTAngel 03-14-2002 05:21 PM

Mine fashion pet peeves:
-Black shoes with white socks (Michael Jackson was NOT a fashion icon)
-Black shoes with a brown belt and black bag...your shoes should match your bag and belt
-Fanny packs...'nuff said!
-Socks with sandles
-Women who are overweight (like 80+ pounds overweight) who wear midriff-bearing tops...if I wanted to see rolls, I'd go to a bakery!

pinkangel 03-14-2002 07:24 PM

ZTAngel... thanks for mentioning the belt!! I hate it when shoes don't match the belt! That also means the shoes, belt, etc. should match the coloring of the outfit.
Also, the black shoes with white socks!! yuck! especially when the pants ride up when you're sitting down (which is actually something else I can't stand, buy pants that are long enough!) And if you're wearing a midriff shirt, or a tight shirt that shows the exact measurements of your torso, then stand up straight! don't stick out that gut, that's mostly for younger girls tho. WHich brings me to something else I don't like, but it's entirely a personal thing, I don't like those preteen girls who dress like they're 22! They don't have a chest, a butt, hips, or anything! Just wait until they hit puberty.

volgirl2376 03-23-2002 03:19 PM

i actually left an unsigned note on the desk of a girl at work who was wearing a short sleeved purple flowery dress (in the dead of winter) with black hose and white white dress shoes. i just said something like "please rethink todays fashion statement". it hurt me to see her.

i also hate the tank top and bra strap combo - as well as the low riding jeans or pants or skirt with 3/4 of your thong showing - save it for the strip club!

i have to disagree with the nude hose - if i have to wear hose, which is practically never - but if i do, i wear nude ones bc my skin tone is very easy to match.

i dont know if this has been discussed - but i hate big white purses - no print - and HUGE. fanny packs are a given ;)

SigmaChiCard 03-26-2002 11:14 AM

B.Rep Chinos
Birkenstock Bostons
B.Rep shirt
with typically a ugly undershirt...i like ugly things
and a North Face Jacket

that's my usual style...

LexiKD 03-26-2002 02:23 PM

I am never perfect and I am sure I have offended someone sometime with my outfit, but in general this is how I feel:

I have to say I hate white anytime. I do where it to Ritual, but that's it! We have to wear hose and I have closed toed shoes for those events!

Winter white in winter is pretty on the rightbody type...not my body, but certian other's I can see it being OK.

Nude hose...I hate them as well. Bone hose....Yes!

Hose with open toed shoes are a no no!

Hose always...depends on the climate and outfit. You never see models in hose 24/7. Hose after 5....again...climate and outfit.

College Freshman pants on a College Junior body....after you gain weight get over it and buy clothes that fit!

Tube Tops/Backless Shirts/Halters....in XL or larger????? Spandex is not a right!

Any underwear lines...again underwear should fit as clothes do, if you need to go up a size do so! Thong lines are the worst!

If you wear light clothes(i.e. White/pastels) BUY A SLIP!

Ankle boots with short skirts....I know I have seen it in magazines, but it looks strange to me.

Is that enough? InStyle is the best mag for all this tips too!

ansturge 04-09-2002 11:48 AM

Ok so hose or no hose

i really hate hose -- the thought of having to wear them makes me cry cuz then my shoes dont fit

yes i have very weird feet -- i have to have narrow shoes --- and they dont come cheap -- and sometimes when i find narrow width shoes my feet still slip and slide all around in the shoe
and it is quite painful esp when you lose a shoe and twist an ankle i hate hate hate hate pantyhose

and what do you wear with a black sleeveless dress

if nude and suntan pantyhose are so wrong what the hell DO you wear with it

cuz black hose on your legs and Stark white arms dont look good either

panty hose arent fair!!!

why cant we progress past the dark ages of womens torture er fashion

Depending on the dress and where you are wearing it to. If its like a cute, everyday dress, cute sandals with NO hose look nice. Personally, i never ever wear hose. If i wear a dress or a skirt to class or work, i wear sandals with it. If its a nightly occasion, like maybe a formal- the dress is normally long so i end up not wearing hose again.

I am fair skinned and nude colored hoses never match my skin tone and look so gross!

I cant remember if i mentioned this before, but sandals and hose is a no no in my opinion!;) i was just brought up knowing you dont do that!

Peaches-n-Cream 04-09-2002 10:06 PM

I'm still going to wear my nude hose! I don't care what anyone else says so there. :p :D

You can wear black hose with a black dress.
