Gastric Bypass
Did any one see that MTV true life thing??? WTF???? That is sooooo not safe. That girl has some deep rooted problems. Changing the size of her stomach will make her losse weight, but it will mean she will need to eat practically all the time to get the nutrients she needs. And if she keeps just eating not healthy foods she won't get them! :(
|
Hahaha, I saw it and can I just say that the guy who got the calf implants is so icky?? I'm sorry, but real men DON'T wear body glitter.
|
Sadly enough I thought I was the only one who watched that on MYV, yea the guy with the calf implants was just kinda crazy, i mean yea having nice calfs on a guy is nice, but really, how many girls go up to a guy a go, oh I am sorry I can't date you cause your calfs are too small.
The other two girls were kinda annoying, the one who got her nose down wqs super skinny, and she was like yea I think I want to go back and get more done. Crazy As for the Gastric bypas, they have done studies on that type of surgery and for people who are severly over w eight it actual helps them. I think if thats what the girl wanted to do,then more power to her, I think she is taking the first step into getting healthy again, also they did a follow up story and she said she was eating healthy and losing more weight due to her changed eating habits and excersize. hahaha. My comment to him was to screw the calf implants and spend the money on gettin them donkey teeth fixed. The reason chicks arent all over him is because it look like he's a shark. Six damn rows of teeth. And they were BIG teeth. Yeah, he could model, as long as he didnt smile. Look like his damn tounge's in jail. Fool. His damn family dont even love him enough to go with him for surgery. That ought to tell you something about his personality. His own people dont like him. |
I know someone who had gastic bypass surgery, and it changed her life for the better. The risk of surgery complications is less than the health risk associated with obesity.
Did you see the woman who had lipo that went bad? I felt so sorry for her and her damaged legs. There were two very young women who were there together. One had a nose job. What did the other have done? They were funny when they were walking outside and nose job girl was hiding her face. lol! I personally have never judged a man based on the size of his calves! |
I saw it too. I couldn't help but roll my eyes back at every comment those girls made. I think the doctor was at fault too. Many plastic surgeons would not recommend a surgery unless it was crucial. I couldn't believe he grabbed the skinny girl's stomach and said, "Well, we can lipo that out too if you want."
As for the guy, the reason he's not getting girls is because he probably, deep-down, likes boys. Real men wear body glitter...hah! As for the heavier girl...I think she was the only one who should've had plastic surgery. Obviously, diet and exercise didn't work for her and she was severely overweight. |
Bypass
My aunt had a gastric bypass a couple of weeks ago. She is close to 40 years old and has been overweight all of her life. Due to her weight problem she has had several problems with her knees, feet, and hips. She eats healthy and exercises but she has just never been able to lose the weight. Hopefully this will work out well for her :)
Most of the people that were on that MTV special made me want to gag especially the guy with the calf implants and the two girls who had the nose job and the liposuction. I can understand the nose job but she was just flat out dumb. As for the other girl...EXERCISE!!! Some people are just too damn lazy. I felt really bad for the lady who had received bad treatments and I hope everything turns out well for the woman who had the gastric bypass. Have a nice day :) |
gastic bypass surgery
I saw on our local news a few days ago where someone in Knoxville was going to have gastic bypass surgery. She weighs like 560 lbs - but her insurance doesnt cover it. So she is raising money - by having BAKES SALES. I had to laugh at the irony although I do know she probably needs it in order to become healthy. What I dont agree with is that she has set up some donation account at a bank where people can send money - I mean isnt that what you do when your child needs a heart transplant or something serious? Just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I know being that heavy is a serious thing...but I dont think she should be begging the community to give her money.
|
AOX81, I hope all is well for your aunt ! I have watched it done a few different times on tv and almost all of the people have said it has changed their lives for the better. So I wish your Aunt, great success.
As for the two girls on MTV they were just silly. The one had a nose job and the other one got lipo to make her thighs look smaller, and all of this was so they could try out for playboy mag. I too felt bad for the lady who's lip went wrong. But there are soo many studies out there, so people should start to see that Lipo really isn't all that safe and should really think twice before they go under the tube and knife . DGP~Honey~ |
Personally I have no problem with gastric bypass......my only complaint is that you have to fall under the medical definition of "morbidly obese" in order to have it. I think that there are people out there who are not morbidly obese but definitely overweight who could benefit. As someone who has battled food addictions and eating disorders I think it would be very helpful to people who simply cannot control themselves.
I am all for plastic surgery within reason. If it makes you feel better about yourself, and you understand the risks involved, go for it. I mean, I think maybe the calf thing was silly.....there are exercises you can do to build up your calves. But hey, then again some guys get breast implants so they can have the big cut chest. I guarantee you I will be one of those women who at 40 decides she has to have her eyes done or something. I already use retinol and anti-aging products like they are going out of style. I hate being so vain but I can't help it. I just know that I am not going to deal well with growing older....I am already getting more and more anxious and freeaked-out as the weeks roll by and the big 30 gets closer. If the one girl had a nose job for Playboy, she wasted her time. We get Playboy and I have to say they seem to be far more interested in the bodies than the faces. I have seen some butt-ugly chicks in there with REALLY bad noses......Hef doesn't seem to be able to see beyond big boobs, skinny legs and bleached-white hair sometimes. |
I have to agree with everyone, I saw the show and really thought that the two girls where just annoying I understand everyone wants to be thin but WORK OUT FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T BE LAZY I honestly wanted to smack them both I hope that the lipo girl knows that now that the fat is gone in her legs if she gains weight it will resettle into different areas, as for the for the calf guy, I just thought that he is a weirdo, did you see him running around on the beach "I HAVE BIG CALVES" and saying how he is a 'total package' riiiight, he was another one who needed smacked, as for the gastric by pass I hope that everything goes well for her,
and i thought that i was the only one who watched all the stupid mtv shows ;) |

You'd have to agree though, anyone who can get to weigh 560 lbs is probably a wonderful chef! Ok so that was in bad taste. |
I saw it a couple of weeks ago, and did anyone else think that the girls nose looked worse after the surgery!? And I'm sorry, but when you "never worked out a day in her life" why are you spending the $$ on the lipo? I've seen the MTV special about the breast implants, and they did a good job there of telling all the sides of it with that one too (good, bad, painful, and health risk). WHat I never understood was why didn't the woman who's lipo got all messed up sue the doctor and have him pay for the correction surgeries?
|
The sad thing with people who want to undergo liposuction is that they want an immediate solution to a long term problem. It didn't take them overnight to get fat, so as goes the way of the world, it won't take overnight to look skinny. Furthermore what good are you doing if you don't change your bad habbits? So you pay loads of money to get liposuction, you get the body you desire and then what? You go back to eating a poor diet? You sit on your ass more because you're "skinny" and you don't need to work out (I mean if you worked out to begin with you wouldn't be in this state)?
My point is, I would rather spend a few months or however long it took to reach my goals than a few thousand to look good. I find the reward more satisfying if I say "I weighed ___ and now look at me!" Hootie |
I didn't see the show y'all are referring to, but I've seen other shows where they talk about gastric bypass. It scares the he!! out of me.
If you're seriously overweight (and I mean *seriously* - like you have to take the subway to work because you can't fit in a car) then the benefits may outweigh the risks. Having a tiny stomach will help with appetite control. You'll drop a lot of weight relatively quickly - then you can have the bypass reversed and start in on eating a full, healthy diet. But for 99.9% of the population, the road to fitness is diet and exercise, not going under the knife. Why undergo surgery if you don't have to?? I know someone who had liposuction. She was sore for weeks - and within a couple of years, all the pounds had come right back. The plain and simple fact is that if you don't eat right, the pounds will come back, no matter what you do. So unless you're seriously, morbidly obese, a healthy diet and exercise is the way to go. |
Re: calf implants
Okay, I was going to make this another thread but oh well. Um...hello? The reason only one part of your calves are big is because you only exercise those muscles. He did about fifteen differnt machines only one set of muscles got worked. If you want the sides to be big, turn your toes outward to work the inside part and then inward to work the outside part. He said he spent six years in the gym, and didnt know that? BS!!
|
I'm sorry, but I just can't get over the body glitter. Do guys really wear that? Because that whole fad was over last year.;)
|
Actually, he may have been working very hard on his muscles but they may not have developed the way he wanted them to. Some people naturally have muscles that develop better than others. Think about your own body. Aren't there some muscles that would remain semi-toned even if you never worked out? I bet there would be. Aren't there some muscles on your body that no matter how hard you work out you can't get them to look perfect? I bet there would be. For instance, my boyfriend would have nice legs even without working out while I would have chicken legs if I never worked out. (and they're still not 100% what I want them to look like and they probably never will be...that's just the way my muscles are shaped) It's all up to genetics. That guy's genetics gave him chicken legs. :D But, I don't think I'd ever get calf implants. They looked so fake!

if he wanted kickin' muscles
he should have ridden a horse(hunt seat) every day for a few weeks now THAT is a workout!! go horseback riding -- u will work muscles you dont know you have |
My mom had gastric bypass suregery at the latter part of May of this year (about 5 months ago). She made the decision to have the surgery while I was back at school, so I did not talk to her about the surgery a whole lot before she went in for the surgery. I know that before the surgery my mother was 5'4" and weighed 275. My mom has always been overweight and worked out a few times a week and never really lost weight.
After my mom had the surgery, I found out that she decided to have the surgery because she felt she needed the extra energy. My dad has had heart disease for the past 5 years or so, which was surprising because he has alweays eaten healthy and worked out. BTW, he is 5'9" and weighs around 175. His doctors ordered him to stop working immediately becaue if not, he'd only have another decade to live. My mom took over my dad's business as she kept her full-time job. I also have an 8-year-old brother who, of course, requires a lot out of my mom. Her decision to have the surgery was just that, HER DECISION. My dad told her there was no need for it, that he loved her how she was. Her decision wasn't for appearance; it was for energy: to be able to work her full-time job, run my dad's business, and raise an 8-year-old. After the surgery, not only my mom, but my immediate family went through so much. I do not know how many times we ended up in the hospital with my mom. I remember telling her one day that she looked so pale and that she needed to go to the doctor. A couple of days later I was walking into her bedroom and saw her standing in front of the sink in her bathroom. She told me to call 911. I ended up seeing that she was vommitting a massive amount of blood (something like a few cups). I went in and stood next to her and was comforting her, telling her that the paramedics were on their way. I could see her in the reflection of the mirror and all of a sudden I saw this look on her face. The next thing I now she is falling onto the ground. I was able to catch her, as my dad was yelling, crying, screaming, for me to do something......to save her. I swear, at the moment, both my dad and I thought we had lost her. I would never wish that feeling on any body. I was about to perform CPR on her when I heard her ask my why she was on the floor. A couple of seconds later the paramedics showed up. She spent almost a week in the hospital because of that incident, until she was "nursed back to health." She had a few blood transfusions and was very dehydrated. That is just one of the few times she has ended up in the hospital because of the surgery. On another visit to the hospital, we found out that she had a bleeding ulcer, which was the cause of the incident listed above, which they failed to find this out during her first one-week stay in the hospital. She was given medicine for the ulcer and it is not gone. In five months, my mom has now lost 120 pounds. When people ask her if she regrets having the surgery, her answer is, "Definitely. I've put myself and my family through so much hell. It definitely is not worth it." Had my mother weighed 400 pounds, then I may have understood why she had the surgery. The only unhealthy thing about my mom was her weight. Her doctors told her that other than her weight, she was in perfect health. I respect the decision my mother made about having the surgery; however, we were all put through a lot because of it. She regrets having had the surgery, but there is no changing what has already been done. She has done excellently in these past couple of months. She now gets vitamin shots from her doctors, and takes some other vitamins in the form of a liquid. When we go out to dinner as a family, I feel bad that she can only have a few spoonfuls of soup and a couple bites of meat. She made that decision though, and we are all supporting her in her journey. |
I Had it Done
I am a person who had gastric bypass. I want to just state that it wasn't a tough decision, but it's hard afterwards. The surgery only "works" for about 18 months, then your body adjusts. I am still overweight, but notby much anymore. I wear anything between a 14 and an 18, depending on the cut. I work out 6-8 times a week, and it's still hard. I've lost 240 so far, and have about 60 to go. But there is so much work that goes into this that no one can possibly understand unless you've been there. I could write a book (actually, I am), but please know that this was a health choice, not just vanity.
|
Wow, I had no idea that gastric bypass surgery could be so dangerous. Hopefully me nor my loved ones will ever have to make that choice. As for the lipo thing...If you went to any reliable trustworthy board certified plastic surgeon and told him you wanted lipo but didn't work out ever, most likely he/she would suggest diet and exercise. Lipo can be very dangerous and even if you get it done, if you have no muscle underneath the fat, you'll just look flabby and untoned.

SATX, I'm sorry to hear about your mother, I'll pray for you all. http://www.clicksmilie.de/sammlung/engel/engel031.gif
Well, I saw the MTV thing, and I saw another special on the gastic bypass, and now they have two methods, the regular stapling (which was so nasty, they showed the actual surgery), then the new method, where they put this white rings with saline in it around the stomach at the same place as the staples, and they increase/decrease the amount of saline through an injection as needed so that you can make the pocket smaller gradually, and this method isn't permanent. I would definately say that that surgery is a LAST RESORT!! Only if you've actually tried to lose weight by changing your lifestyle and it didn't work should you do that because its so extreme!! I'd probably be a candidate for it, but I don't think I'd EVER actually do it. It just...doesn't sit well with me. I also saw this special (I LOVE the discovery and discovery health channel and TLC) where they talked about new research they're doing, where they've found this particular gene or hormone in some that does something molecularly to your body, but in plain terms, makes it hard to lose fat because this gene or hormone prevents it. In those that don't have it, they have no problem with weight no matter what they ate. They talked about all the different variables they used and it was very interesting. But I've known that for a while because I know lots of skinny as a rail people that eat like HOGS ON CRACK and don't gain an ounce, and bigger people who just LOOK at a cracker and gain 5 pounds. I've known people to honestly try hard as hell to lose weight and it just sits there, so I think that this research is very valid. Its not just a case of people eating too much, although I know that that is the case with some. I've never eaten like a hog, I eat basically balanced meals, and still gain. Who knows. I'd be very interested in seeing how that research goes, they said they're almost at the human trial point!! |

HOGS on CRACK... now that's funny. :D
Watching shows like this (and yes, I watched it) makes me feel a little bit better about myself. No, I'll never be perfect. I would love to be a little skinnier... But at least I don't have an obsessive vanity problem. Gastric bypass works for a lot of people, especially those with health problems... but Richard Simmons has helped a lot of obese people slim down too. Our society is always looking for the fastest fix to our problems. Personally, I would like to work on my INNER imperfections before I start stressing out about my love handles. |
My boss had gastric bypass. Actually he had that ring thing put in there to constrict the size of his stomach. He so cheats. Knows how to work around it..drinks lots of water when he eats a lot, andalso eats real soft foods that slip by. Every now and then it bites him in the ass, and its kinda funny. He'll be cheating, and then yack. Real fast like. hahahaha.
|
There are actually over 10 forms of the surgery. I had something called bilieo-pancreatic diversion: most of my stomach was removed and about 70% of my small intestine is gone as well. The stomach makes it harder to eat more, and the removal of intestine was so that I absorb less calories. I can eat any fat and protein I want, it goes right through me! But carbs and sugars are bad, NAUGHTY!

i have a few comments about this subject myself. oh where to begin.
first of all, i did see the mtv show about it and i agree with most of you on the whole calves guy and the two annoying chics. but as for the girl who had gastric bypass, i think it was okay to do, but this is where i had problems. the committment factor in having this surgery is probably equal if not more than the committment to working out and eating right. the difference though is the drastic and abrasive nature of having surgery. being obese is something i know about. i am 5'7" and weigh about 260lbs. i considered the surgery, but have opted not to do it. my brother who is a doctor basically showed me that it isn't worth going under the knife and completely changing myself internally to lose weight. instead i started a personal fitness program and began to eat properly. i haven't lost much yet, but i'm working on it. i'm staying committed to it. i, like the girl in the show, was pretty much a lazy a$$ who didn't want to eat properly and work out, but the reality of it is that eating properly and working out is the best option for almost everyone. it is possible for someone who is over 500 lbs to lose weight without having surgery. i have a friend who weighed about that much and simply went to a dietician and get himself on a special diet program to help bring his weight down. it worked as long as he stuck to it. he ended up losing over 100lbs in the first 6months. the key is, you have to stick to it if you want to lose the weight. i hate not being able to eat sugars and carbs, but if i wnat to lose the weight i'm not going to eat them. i hate going to work out all the time, but i do it. i do understand that it seems to be the best option to some people and some people have tried losing weight the old fashioned way and failed. as for vanity factors, well, regardless of what anyone says, i believe that vanity is always a factor in someone's desire to lose weight. it's not the only factor by any means, but it is a factor. i will try and refrain from getting into the whole fat discrimination issue too much, but like it or not overweight people deal with fat bashing and fat discrimination all the time. i've even experienced it on this site. but that's a whole other thread that i'm probably going to start soon anyways. either way i think it's an extremely drastic decision to get surgery for something that you can usually take care of with a little hard work. shelley j sigma k |

Second, if you substitute alcohol or heroin for food, would the alcoholic be seen as a moral failure as well? It's a form of addiction. Obesity is an illness. Stop persecuting people for weight! Christ, I am SO tired of that!!!!!! It is damn hard to stick to my weight loss goals everyday! But, I try. I am no less than anyone else because of how I look or what substance I chose to use to medicate myself. I have posted before what I suffered through, so I won't rehash it, but please, PLEASE, stop saying "It's just a matter of a little hard work!" Hauling a 1/4 ton body around was hard, too! But I did what I had to to, and I'm still going to get shit for it?!?! NO WAY!!!!!!! |
I saw the MTV special as well. I think it's important to state that ANY surgery performed for ANY reason has the potential to be deadly. Complications arise all the time. People seem so focused on getting a quick fix that they sometimes don't seriously consider the possible consequences of their actions.
Personally, I don't have a problem with gastric bypass when used for dramatic weight loss in the morbidly obese. I think people need to understand that it's major surgery and that the weight can be gained back. When I watched the MTV special, I thought the girl who had the gastric bypass was really the only one on the show who had a legitimate need for surgery. The two girls and the calf guy were just vain. Oh, and the reason calf guy was single has nothing to do with his calves and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that he was a cocky jerk. |
I wholeheartedly support those who undergo gastric bypass surgery. It's not something that doctors would let you go through with if you were not a good candidate for it. Losing weight is incredibly hard, and this seems to really help people.
I also want to thank those of you who have shared their very personal experiences. I can't even begin to imagine what you have gone through. Some of us need to take the time each day to thank God (or whatever you believe in) for what we have. I bitch up and down about my weight, but I'm so much better off than a lot of people (i'm a size 9/10). As for the rest of the people on that MTV show- those girls made me want to puke. Do they realize how brainless they looked? And that guy was the most pathetic person that I think i've ever seen. Even his mom said that he needed to work on his mind and not his body. What does he do? Does he work? Then he goes around after the surgery asking people to feel his calf. And no man should EVER EVER EVER wear body glitter. No excuses. ever. What a fairy. Haha, the total package my ass. I bet his "package" is the size of a limp noodle. |
sigmagrrl,
i made very sure i put the word usually in there so i wasn't making a completely blanket statement. don't sit there and think i don't know what it is to be fat and be told i'm just lazy. i've been fat my whole life. i meant that working out for people who are like 350 or less is a whole lot better than putting yourself through that kind of surgery. you're right, at your weight you needed to have that surgery or you would die. no question. and of all things, don't even think i'm persecuting someone for their weight. i may not be as big as what you were, but i sure as he!! am not at a healthy weight. did you even read all of what i posted? i seriously doubt you did, otherwise you wouldn't have taken such a defensive nature to what i posted. i'm fat, i know what it's like to be persecuted and what i posted was in no way a form of persecution. shelley j sigma k |
oh yeah, m&m, i love your post. i was trying to say some of the same thing. and you are so right about the calf guy. such a prick.

It's really hard for obese people to exercise and do things that "normal" people can do. If my mom were to let me have some kind of surgery, I'd definately do it. They have this lazer lipo surgery that the radio station here did while on the air, and they said it was fabulous. They can only do a lil at a time, but believe me losing a lil here and there would help out greatly. |
Wow this kind of was a timely thread to bring back up for me. I actually recently went to ask my doctor about gastric bypass being an option for me because I'm 5'5" and weigh 300 pounds. I've been overweight my whole life (was a womans size 14 at the age of 12).
PM_mama, I am just like you and have tried nutrisystem, jenny craig, those fad tv diets, metabolife, Richard simmons, phen-fen and weight watchers (quite a few times). Every single time I lose about 20 pounds and no matter what I do I hit a plateau and can't lose any more. After a few weeks I get discouraged and go back to my old eating habits. The 20 pounds then come back and more often then not bring 5-10 pounds of friends with them. In some ways I wish I had never started "dieting" then maybe I wouldn't have hit the 300 pound mark. Anyway, back to the gastric bypass. When I asked my doctor at Kaiser Permanente about it the only way they will allow someone to do that is if they are at serious health risks. Well I thought being 300 pounds was risk enough. My doctor told me though that the complications (1 in 300 patients have complications) from the surgery are not worth the benefits so the only patients that they look at for candidates are those who have uncontrollable diabetes or high blood pressure or have severe heart disease. Of course most things I read on the web or see on tv are all good things about the surgery so I was really bummed about the fact I'm not a candidate (blood pressure is 121/89, no diabetes, and heart in good shape). I've always wondered what it is like to be skinny and shop in "normal stores" and what its like to climb a flight of stairs without feeling like you have run a marathon. Now, when I was reading some of the bad things on this thread I'm a little more okay with the fact that I can't do the suregery unless i go do some private clinic and cough up the money. There's still part of me that wants to do the surgery but it will take me a few years to save up the money so I'll have time to really think it through Carolyn |
A very very close family member of mine had the gastric bypass surgery a little over a year ago. Although I was afraid for her I was also supportive. She weighed 330 pounds and is now down to 185. I am so proud of her. She gets up and goes to work out every day and is doing very well. It was the best decision for her.
