Yall, I JUST realized that this Lina CD has two bonus tracks on it! That GangStarr remix is tight!
That's all I wanted to say, lol... it was a pleasant surprise! :) |
Does ANYONE know the artist/title of a song that goes:
"No - no, no little brother/ I got a man, ain't trying to get another..." Something to that effect... I KNOW y'all can help me out on this!! |
Glenn Lewis Review compliments of SeeingBlack.com
Glenn Lewis: the new Stevie?
Glenn Lewis: World Outside My Window By Mark Anthony Neal SeeingBlack.com Music Critic Glenn Lewis' debut CD World Outside My Window. "Don't You Forget It" begins with those opening bars—déjà vu Stevie circa 1972… "Superwoman"… Music on My Mind. And then the voice… Stevie? Naw that ain't Stevie. This ain't 1972. By now this popular single is as well known and ubiquitous as Carl Thomas's "I Wish" was two blue winters ago. The fabulously mellifluous voice belongs to Glenn Lewis, Toronto native, son of a reggae-singing Yardie, self-described shy boy, who is poised and primed as the next neo-soul poster boy. But to tag Lewis and his debut, World Outside My Window, with the "neo-soul" label, does not do justice to one of the best R&B artists and recordings in some time. Glenn Lewis's sound brings the obvious comparisons to Maxwell, the aforementioned Thomas and Wonder, and even Donell Jones. But the laid back neo-70's moog groove of this album probably best recalls Love Stories (2000), the very fine and very ignored recording by Frank McCombs. While Sony seemed at a lost at how to plug McCombs into the mix (no dreads so he can't be neo-soul, and he ain't a thug lover like Jaheim so he can't go urban, so it must be smooove jazz), Epic seems hell bent on getting Lewis the wider audience he deserves. Lewis' single first debuted on the mix CD Red Star Sounds. (Click to purchase.) Audiences were first made aware of Glenn Lewis on the compilation recording Red Star Sounds. Though the recording included new music from Macy Gray, Nelly Furtado, India.Arie, Erykah Badu and a remixed version of Jill Scott's "Long Walk," the recording was primarily a showcase for up and coming acts like Jack Herrera, Lathun and of course Lewis. Lewis's "Don't You Forget It" broke through and began receiving heavy radio and video airplay. Not much of a song on first listen, the song literally lulls you into its introspection if only because of the sheer beauty of Lewis's voice. Like those pretty soul boys that came before him—Babyface and Keith Washington come immediately to mind—Lewis nixes the grits and gravy aesthetic, choosing instead a honey-brown delivery. Lewis also turned in vocals on De La's "Am I Worthy?" from their just released AOI: Bionix. But ultimately, it's the Stevie thing—Lewis sounds like he been listening to Stevie Wonder since he been in the womb. In promotional material, Lewis relates the story of singing Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love" at a high school talent show and having folks in the audience think that he was lip-synching the song. The affinity to Wonder's vocal style is also particularly evident the wonderful "It's Not Fair," which is a loose interpolation of Wonder's classic "All in Love is Fair." The sermonic "It's Not Fair" is easily the disc's strongest track. The backing vocals, which at times function as a long, sensuous moan, also recall Wonder's brilliant "Love's In Need Of Love Today" from the career defining Songs in the Key of Life (1976). Drawn from real-time drama, the song details a salacious relationship between Lewis's girlfriend and his best friend. While Lewis alternates verses to address each, it is on the song's bridge that Lewis draws blood and tears skin as he sings on the brink of tears and seeming total emotional collapse. "It's not fair/After all I sacrificed/For my seeds…to give life/With everything, I lived for you to be happy…The life and love you breathed into my heart/Slipping away—dying today." A subtle reminder perhaps, that Lewis wields soft words and his soft voice with a gangsta's ferocity. By the time Lewis is heard alternately moaning and hollering, it is all too easy to envision him as broken and shattered. It is the most brilliant moment of a project that is rife with many accomplished moments. Lewis's innocence as an artist comes through on the aptly titled "Simple Things" as he speaks over the string—laden intro "Ai yo, are you recording?" A likely second single-could have been the lead single—"Simple Things" is one of those flutter-thumpers (SUV bumping midtempos) where Lewis's own vocals are layered and the song soars like a rush of caramel ecstasy. On the laid-back groove "This Love," the string arrangements recall the introduction of LTD's "Concentrate on You." Produced by Touch of Jazz's Andre Harris and Vidal Davis (MJ's "Butterflies" and Jill Scott's Who Is Jill Scott?), throughout World Outside My Window, Lewis keeps the lyrics simple and accessible. On the gothic styled "Is It True" Lewis challenges his honey about her infidelity ("is it true…my man said he hit it too"). The quirky production of "Is It True" is also present on the infectious mid-tempo booty-shaker "Never Too Late." The song is built around an under-water thump (think the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds meets Maxwell's "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)." Another cut, "Take You High," recalls mid-temp grooves like Frankie Beverly and Maze's "Happy Feelings" and "Golden Time of the Day." Other standout tracks include the pleading (not quite beggin' like Keith), "Lonely," the bouncy "One More Day" and "Sorry" which is the only time Lewis kind of gets "grits and gravy" Lewis also pays tribute to his young songs on the happy "Beautiful Eyes." Lewis is not the post-modern Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye (always invoked because of a general lack of musical literacy among neo-soul performers), or Donny Hathaway (quiz: name one Hathaway song that wasn't recorded with Roberta Flack or recorded for the X-mas season). Rather, Glenn Lewis is a fine singer/songwriter whose debut recording is a fitting addition to the modern soul tradition. **article C & P'ed from http://www.seeingblack.com Related Sites: http://www.glennlewismusic.com http://www.redstarsounds.com -- March 14, 2002 |
When I first heard "Don't You Forget " I thought that it was Stevie too. Glen sounds a whole lot like Mr. Wonder. I was thinking that Stevie had a new song out.

The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin
I am LOVING KIRK's new CD. I am a huge fan of Kirk and I am on a mission to see him in concert one of these old days.
My faves: Caught Up with Shirley Caesar, Looking Out for Me, Brighter Day, and Don't Cry. |

Am I the only one who kind of feels C-Lo's "Closet Freak"? That video trips me the freak out! LMAO! shhhhhhhhhhh! :p |
:p you know, you were wrong asking people to post their favorite musicians. :p i might never finish! :D anyways, i'm gonna write a very very short list ;-) ya'll please don't laugh at me
alanis morrisette: i want her new album! lauryn hill: will she ever have a second album? it's getting a little old seal: no, kiss from a rose was NOT the only song he ever did! sade: i've liked her music ever since i was 8 years old. is that a bad sign considering i'm 20 now? lol moby: okay, fine, he does need some fried chicken in his scrawny body, but when i'm p****d off, i can put the cd and feel a little better! :-D okay, i'm going to go now... |
glenn lewis...
i went out and got Glen today... I likes, I likes!!!!! I liked the entire thing!!
I also purchased Remy Shand... his is tight too.... he has about 6 songs that I really like, and a few that are OK. |
Y'all... why does Tweet's CD go so hard???? I mean, when this girl made an album, SHE DID THAT. I liked "Oops, Oh My" and everything, but the album really surprised me. I'm feeling pretty much every song on it, especially "Smoking Cigarettes" and "My Place." Oh, and "Motel" and "Beautiful" and "Always Will".... okay, so pretty much every song. I'm even considering going to buy the LEGIT copy - that says something. ;)

My sources on the street said that Musiq's new cd is set tobe releases in June I think. I can't wait cuz ya'll know I love me some Musiq Soulchild!
|
Ok, yall, I heard that Ashanti's album was the best one out right now, better than Faith's and Mary's. To that, I say, BOO!! I listened to it last night, and it has some good cuts on it, but overall, it's just not all that. And has the nerve to call herself the Princess of Hip-Hop AND R&B. COME ON NOW!!! First, too many previously used hooks. I mean, one of the songs has the hook from Love Me In A Special Way (I think, if not, another DeBarge song). Anyway, I wasn't feeling it all like that. Maybe I need to listen again.
I gotta get that Tweet!!! Musiq is str8 trippin, just like Bilal. Why they be doin' me like that? :( |
REPLAY MAG
I read Musiq's release date in REPLAY MAG yestiddy. Mayish
Next weekend is Triple Replay Points. |
Re: I'll Admit it...Will you?
I'm a little late, but...

Lately i have been in an "old school" mood. The CD's in my car are Keith Sweat (self titled), Anita Baker (rapture), Janet Jackson (Control), Guy (The Future), and New Edition (Greatest Hits). As for what current music i'm feeling right now: Mary J. Blige's (not so new) joint: I saw her in concert about a month ago and i was thoroughly pleased, and i just got around to buying the CD. "Testimony" and "In the Meantime" are very well done (as is the entire album). Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory: I have not taken that CD out of my car since I got it. Papercut, Crawling, and pretty much the entire CD are like that! I can't wait for Michelle Williams' (Destiny's Child) gospel CD to come out next Tuesday. I heard a radio interview this afternoon and she was so excited that I was excited for the girl. She really has talent and she's hooked up with Shirley Caesar and other gospel greats on her debut solo project. :) |

Also, I listened to some of Ashanti's CD, and I wouldn't say it was better than Faith or Mary. It's ok, but it's not all that. I have to go and pick up Tweet! Glenn's CD is VERY NICE!!! Musiq's "halfcrazy" is TIGHT!!! I can't wait until his CD drops! I also want to check out Michelle Williams's CD. I think it will be pretty nice. |
Yay! SO glad this thread is back...
Tweet's CD... ON TIME! I love it! I love all of it! "Drunk" is CRAZY!!! I highly recommend it, as the lead single is not at all telling of the rest of the CD. It is sweet, acoustic, melodic...cool. Ashanti - hmmm...pretty generic. I think she has a very nice voice ("Thank You" shows that), but she is just packaged into this half gangsta/half pop princess image that will get her sales, but not respect. Buy it if you like most of the R&B they play on the radio/TV today. Glenn Lewis...eerie how Stevie-ish he is. Superior song writing, overall, I recommend it. Number 4 is my jam (don't remember the name), it is so nice!! Y'all about a month ago i re-discovered my Jazzyfatnastees CD "The Once and Future". It came out in 1999, but I gotta say that this is probably, IMO, one of the best CD's ever. If not that, then "Breakthrough" is definitely one of the best SONGS ever. I love this CD. Even though it is old, if you haven't checked it out, and you are a fan of the neo-soul movement, it is a must. Are y'all digging the new Trina ("Told Y'all")? I am!! lol, I love my Slip-n-Slide!! Also, Trick Daddy and Cee-Lo's song is tight too. I always grin when I hear Trick/Trina. :D Let me put my right foot in the game now..... P.S. I am gonna bring up the OLD dance thread... |
Hey GCers...I've been MIA, but I still love y'all!!!
Okay, I'm going to start off with my man, THA man, JOE! I love the album, it's all that! 2. Brandy-The CD is tight! Off the chain, I love it! 3. Glenn Lewis-the cd is off the chain! 4. Tweet- ALL THAT...OOOPS is an understatement compared to the rest of the album! Don't be fooled friends, the girl is BAD! I expect her to blow up BIG TIME! That's my time for now...I'll be back! Luv ya! |

I tried to find that post about the belly dancing video, but I couldn't. Anyway... that song Addicted by Truth Hurts is my favorite song right now!! I love it!! I can't wait to hear it at the club!!! I downloaded a couple of her other songs, and they sound pretty nice. She's on Aftermath, so I think that CD will be a definite buy. I finally downloaded some of Musiq's new CD, and I can't wait til it comes out!!! We're thinking about buying Remy Shand, but I don't know. After listening to a couple of his songs, I started getting annoyed with his voice. Who else? Oh, Glenn... my favorite track is that song Take Me, or something like that. The CD is really nice. I guess that's it. :) Had to come back and edit... I took LibraSoul's advice and picked up that Jazzyfatnastees CD. LOVE IT!! Thanks, girl! :) |
MTV Unplugged 2.0--May 7th!!!
I just heard clips of Lauryn's new CD on CDnow.com (in stores this Tuesday!!!), and it's pretty deep! I'm definitely going to have to buy it!

Musiq's CD comes out on May 7th, so does the Lauryn Hill unplugged. Yes Tweet's album is the bomb! I listened to Ashanti's album and it bored me. But she is selling, can't hate her for that. The question is though, will she have longevity in the biz? I don't think so. Her sound is of the moment. Ja Rule's basically doing for her what he did for J-LO. Pretty soon that whole sound will get played. And whoever said she had a nice voice, well I'll let you think that. But the album I'm really waiting on, drumroll please.....THE EMINEM SHOW! I can't wait for that album. The Marshall Mathers LP was so tight! And whether you like what he has to say, you can't deny his tight lyrical skills. He's the tightest MC out right now, as far as lyrical skills. I know I'm gonna get some hate mail on that one, but if you listens to the song off of Jay-Z's "Blueprint" album "Renegades" you'll see what I mean.
|
I purchased Ashanti's too. It's okay. I think she will last longer as a writer than a performer.
|
NUPE4LIFE, I said that Ashanti has a nice voice. I was referring to the acapella track called "Thank You." IMO, she showcases what she really has on that track. Unfortunately, on the rest of her material she chooses to sounds like a nasal 9 year old. Her bad. The rest of her CD is a s***ty boo-boo mess. I hate when people with potential come so generic! One of my pet peeves.
Musiq's CD = tight (especially #8...don't know the title, got a bootleg copy, lol) Cee Lo Green = tight, the whole CD Tweet = everyone has already sung her praises...just believe the hype! That's really all I am listening to right now. N4L, I am looking forward to Eminem too. India.Arie is supposed to have something new for the summer. Rafael Saadiq drops later this month. I gotta pick it up. Oh...I forgot, I am digging Cam'ron's new song "Oh Boy". Ms. Jade (new Timbaland/Missy chick) sounds like she is gonna turn out to be pretty good. I checked a few cuts and liked what I heard. |
THAT is where her talent shows
Quote:
SPEAKING OF SKITS, if you want to sing -- then sing. If you want to act, THEN ACT. But stopping having my ___ ____ ____ buy yo chit and it have both.  Oh I do like her song "MOVIES". It's a nice little ballad but nothing like OOOOOOOOOOOOH Girl that's my jam for forever type of ballad. |
I saw Heather B's (Real World-Original) latest video "Live MC". It has that OLD SCHOOL hip-hop/rap feel. I hope things are going back to the sound of the middle to late 80's.
 Enough already with Ja-Rule remixing erebody's songs...ughhhhhh! |
We need help
Yall, me and Loverman are trying to be good about our spending habits and paying our bills and stuh. So we had budgeted out everything, and came up broke. Well, yesterday was May 7th, and yall know what that meant, my dude, Musiq. So, needless to say, one of the bills got trashed, and we traipsed on over to MediaPlay to pick up my dude Musiq. We get there, the first CD I see is Lauryn Hill's UP. HAD to pick that up, shooooot. And yall, it's two discs!!!!! :D Love it!! Then we also got Musiq and Ceelo. All three are tight!!! And I think that Musiq wrote his CD about me!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU MUSIQ!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!
So tell me this.... Did Lauryn actually perform on MTV??? Did I miss that??? |
Yup!
She sure did. She was very emotional too. Her hubby was there playing along with her. I guess it isn't true that they split.
|
Man, I love this thread!
I am definitely feeling Lauryn's new CD. It is nothing like her last CD, which I loved. It has a very folksy, inspirational vibe to it. She does a lot of talking on it. I missed her on MTV, but I'm sure she rocked it. I haven't picked up Musiq's yet, but I may just do that on my way home. I'm going to see him at the HOB this weekend, so I have to hear it before I go.
|
Well, I am going to go out on a limb and REPRESENT for Hip-Hop!! I love R&B, but I LOVE Hip-Hop!!
I am truly, absolutely, undoubtedly, indelibly in LOVE with NAS !! Stillmatic was worth every mic that the Source gave him! I have been down with Nas since Illmatic. That's my man! I can go on and on about Hip-Hop, but I don't want to bore those of you who aren't interested. I just had to put one in for Nas. As for R&B, no group can compare to 112! I love 112! Jagged Edge has nothing on them. Jagged Edge tries to drag them down with any chance that they get, like on 106 & Park. Carl Thomas is wonderful. I also like India.Arie, Tamia, and Sade. I am definitely feeling the return of Donell Jones.... Oh, I can go on for days in this category, so I'll make out like a bandit while I can! :D |
i saw her perform a couple of songs on MTV... I couldn't get into it. Either i wasn't in the mood or the songs were slightly depressing. but that's just my opinion based on the 2.5 songs i heard. I'm a fan and that performance didn't make rush out to get the CD.

I'm seriously feeling Remy Shand. His voice is smooth and he writes and does all the music for his songs. A very talented person, IMO.
I only kinda like Jazzyfatnastees. It's lacking to me but i can't put my firnger on how. I love Les Nubians Princesses Nubianesse. It's sung in french but it's the bomb. And it's pretty old. So i'm hoping for something new. Ok...i'm watching the Halfcrazy video. Now is Musiq looking some kinda good now? Cut the hair, dropped some weight and he's looking GOOD. :D |

2) *whispering so as not to be overheard by Ideal08* But the man is only 5'6"!! |

I can't believe I missed Lauryn. :( They repeat mess all the time. They can't repeat this? Not to mention, I didn't even see a preview for it or anything. Busters. |
Ok Ok...you got me... I burned the CD and I couldnt get #3. :) So i'll try to down load it if it's that good. I do like Unconventional Ways.
Musiq has a Cockeye!!!!! No wonder the sunglasses all the time. As long as he keeps em on, I'm good. I kinda like short guys. That Napoleon complex is sexy. LOL |
Y'all are off the chain! Let me stop hating on that man. His music speaks for itself.
:D |
Y'all...two words...
TRUTH HURTS I know SOMEONE out there is feeling me on this one. ;) Her entire CD comes out on June 11th and I hear she has duets with Eminem and ahem, r. kelly . Um...nothing too much on the horizon in the way of music. I am bumping the new Musiq, and a mix CD with some Trina ("Told Y'all"), Trick and Cee-Lo ("Dro in the Wind"), and some other dirty south stuff...K-Wang, LOL :D . I heard there is actually a ghetto-fab video for it, I wish I could find a link or something so I could post it for Southern-challenged people to see. I have heard that Rakim is coming out with a new CD, can't wait for it. I love Rakim Allah, he is the best lyricist EVER! |
