Explaining Greek Pride

I don't know if this is appropriate here, but I wrote this column in today's Daily Spectator, the newspaper of Columbia University. I hope people enjoy it.

Wow, that was such an amazing article!

Betarulz! 02-28-2002 08:04 PM

Steve, brilliant writing as usual. I've been a loyal reader of Observational Humor for over a year now, you're always insightful and right on the point. This article was no exception.

stillwater15 02-28-2002 11:04 PM

great article. hopefully, it will dispel some of the myths and stereotypes that accompany those of us are greek.

Peaches-n-Cream 02-28-2002 11:08 PM

Steve, that was an excellent article!
You should come to the NYC GC meeting in March! We're trying to decide on a date. :D

Steve my man!

You rock. I have been reading observational humor for about a 6 months now. (As a matter of fact the 100 things you need to know for college article has been posted here twice.) Probably the best, take on college life ever. I remember discovering OH and spending two hours in the computer lab laughing my ass off.

The article today was very well written and you truely do a service to the greek community by writing such a piece.

Come back to GC more often. We can definately use your input and wit around here.

For thos enot familliar with steve's work, go to www.collegehumor.com and select observational humor link on the left. Great reading.

Thanks so much for this great feedback. Some people have even been kind enough to leave feedback on the article itself, which can only help show the Columbia Spectator the power of positive coverage of Greek Life. I've also gotten e-mails from across the country, and it looks like people are really forwarding this message out, and I couldn't be prouder.

For those of you who said you read ObservationalHumor, thanks for the extra plug. I'm thinking about sending the column with this weekend's edition. No reason not to abuse my audience. :-)

This is actually the first time I've heard of Greek Chat - a friend of mine told me I should post here. If you do have an NYC Greek Chat convention, let me know - I can always be e-mailed at sih7@columbia.edu.

Again, you guys are awesome - thanks!

Great article, Steve! Truly enjoyable reading. I spent a lot of time at Columbia in the late 80's when my then boyfriend (CC '90 and a Sammie) went there. I remember Columbia as being an ultra-liberal place and not very Greek-friendly. I commend you writing this article.

One minor disagreement, however....I personally do not care for shadow puppets. But I guess that's just me...

dzrose93 03-01-2002 10:55 AM

Well done!

What a wonderful article! Thanks so much for sharing it with GC! :D

Dianne 03-01-2002 11:20 AM

Wow, you really summed it up! I forwarded it to my chapter's email server so all my sisters could read it, and to my boyfriend who is in a fraternity. I only wish I could forward it to all the anti-greek people at my school!

IowaHawkeye 03-01-2002 11:25 AM

And thank you for recognizing Theta's Nedda Allamar for bringing Dance Marathon to Columbia!

SteveHofstetter 03-26-2002 12:48 PM

Hey, thanks to everyone for their support on this. It's been about a month since I wrote that, and I got 13 pieces of feedback on the column, and most columns don't receive any. (My second most popular one received five). Shows how passionate Greeks are, you know?

pirate00 03-26-2002 04:35 PM

Three Cheers!!!

Steve, you are a credit to our Greek community. I only hope you continue to reflect us in a positive light. You're awesome!!!

LexiKD 03-26-2002 10:01 PM

I agree that was a great read!

kristiAZD 03-27-2002 01:04 AM

I thought it was an excellent article. In my school's paper this week there was an article about the alarming rate of crime at my small school and the head securtiy officer was quoted as saying that it all boiled down to frat feuds brought on by alcohol. It angered me EMENSELY (sp?) and I plan on writing a letter to the editor! Now that I've read your great article I have the confidence to write a great letter myself! Keep up the great work!:)

Sisterplum 03-27-2002 03:31 PM

Steve, that is a great article! I'm going to forward the link to all my sisters!

You are an inspiration to us greeks!:D:D

KDHoney 03-27-2002 05:06 PM

Great job Steve! Everything that you said is so true...on our Student Union executive board, 6 out of the 8 members are Greek. Greek life promotes involvement and spirit and that's something that everyone can benefit from!

Steve, my Hat Of To A Great Article and a Fellow Greek!:)

I am not sure if I can copy and paste it to send to my chapter and International, with your permission of course!

I and many others from all Greek Organizations on this site applaud you!http://www.plauder-smilies.de/happy/invasion.gif

SteveHofstetter 03-28-2002 02:29 AM

Tom - if you'd like to send it out, please do. As a writer, there's no harm in some excess exposure. As a Greek, I'd love to help morale in anyway I can.

Thanks for the feedback - and let me know how it is received from your bros.

SteveHofstetter 04-09-2002 10:51 PM

I was just told that this was forwarded out to a national list of Fraternity and Sorority advisors. Does anyone know if that's true?

Thanks,
