For those of you who wear make-up

When do you first remember wearing it? (Having your face wiped with your mother's sponge to remove the "shine" doesn't count...LMAO)

What brand did you purchase/ use?

At an early age, were you only limited to lip gloss?

I remember in the 2nd grade this girl (not-AA) had her entire locker filled with make-up. I bet her butt looks older than Phyllis Diller right now. LMAO

CkretCrush8 02-21-2002 09:42 PM

I don't remember the exact age that I started wearing make-up but I know that I was "wet n wild" fanantic. That's really all my mother would let me wear and it was limited to lip liner, lipstick, and nail polish. When I got a little older, I used Mary Kay products for free because my grandmother used to be a representative. In High school, I used a combination of Mary Kay, Revlon, and Mac (mac was closer to my senior year though).

AKAtude 02-21-2002 11:20 PM

I rather not wear make-up. To this day, I only use lipstick and eyeliner on a daily basis and leave the heavy make-up to special occasions. I remember in middle school, I was allowed to use flavored lip gloss and press powder. I think it was Cover Girl.

Honeykiss1974 02-22-2002 12:13 AM

Oh I LOVE make-up! I remember in junior high i was only allowed to wear lig gloss and nail polish, but I can remember going to school and putting on my friends make-up. Of course I had to wash that stuff off BEFORE I went home so I wouldn't get in trouble. When I started high school, I was able to wear everything. I wore mostly Revlon in high school.

NOWorNEVER 02-22-2002 01:31 AM

In middle school, I was the make up queen! My mother wouldn't let me use it, so I'd always have to sneak it out of the house and put it on when I got to school. :D Everyone always told me my face would crack. But I didn't just throw it on and look like a clown...I read Bobbi Brown, Cindy Crawford, and Kevin Aucoin make up books. I practiced and practiced until it was perfect. Even now, people ask me to help them apply make-up on special occasions. I probably started out w/ wet n' wild and bonne belle, then moved on to Revlon and Cover Girl in middle school, then Clinique and Avon in high school. Now I'm all about Mary Kay and MAC.

Make-up

I don't like make up and never have. I think make up is a sign of insecurity among women. We don't need makeup to look or improve beauty. We are naturally beautiful! Think about it

SoTrue1920 02-22-2002 03:28 AM

I was probably 13 or 14, and the first brand I remember wearing was Polished Ambers (?) by Revlon.. that brand is no longer in stores, so that might give you an idea how old I am. :D

delph998 02-22-2002 10:28 AM

I first started wearing makeup when I turned 13. I'll never forget it...my father told me on "since you're 13, you wear a little lipstick." What did he tell me that for?! I went out and bought the brightest red lip stick ever! Call me boogie (the way black folk spell it!), but I started off with Mary Kay because my mother was a consultant. Once in high school, I started venturing off into MAC. Those are the only brands of make up that I use to this day.

ClassyLady 02-22-2002 12:06 PM

My mother used to always let me play with her makeup when I was little. She would even help me. She would do my lipstick and eyeshadow and mascara. I had so much fun with that, so I never really wanted to wear make up to school. The most I did was some of the flavored lip gloss.

My mother taught me that makeup shouldn't be a staple. Instead, it's a little something extra for special occassions. To this day, I don't wear makeup every day. If I feel that I'm looking especially good in my outfit, I'll put on a little mascara and lipstick. But, I save the really good stuff for special occassions and nights out.

strobelitehoney 02-22-2002 12:12 PM

We think alike

I was 14 when i started wearing eyeliner, and lip gloss. well I stole the lip gloss from my mom, because It was strawberry flavored. *don't tell her, she'll still beat my but if she knew i did that* hee hee.

I Started wearing eyeshadow and stuff like that when i was 17 or 18. I was a tom boy a late bloomer, but dag nabit I look good wearing it now. :D

Flashback:

My grandma sent me a beautiful make up kit when i was 13 with this LOUD RED lipstick, that was only deemed pretty if "White girls wore it". I put it on, boy did I look like a clown. LMAO :D To say the least my mom confiscated my Kit and gave it to me when I was 18. After she USED some of the best eyeshadow colors,
Talk about bootleg.LMAO

tickledpink 02-22-2002 01:30 PM

13. My mother let me wear Maybelline & Revlon. I could wear lipstick, rather than lipgloss.

2DISCRETE4U 02-22-2002 02:05 PM

Well compared to everyone else, I guess I'm a late bloomer! :(
I got my first MAC compact when I was a junior in college. I didn't wear powder or foundation before that but I did know how to hook my lips up! :D
On a daily basis I usually wear some lip gloss or lipstick or just some chapstick when I'm casual.
I recently started to wear eyeshadow (it really does make a difference) but I only really put on powder and eyeshadow when I go out to party or something. :p

This question was directed to those WHO WEAR MAKE-UP...

I didn't ask what non-make-up wearers think, thought or care(d) about...

Azul 02-22-2002 09:47 PM

My first make-up item was lipstick in a hideous (sp) shade of red by Cover Girl. I looked like Homie D. Clown.

I never really wear foundation , but I do dabble in eyeshadow, lip glass and powder. I didn't start with all of that until senior year in High school, then I actually started wearing it often in college.

I always snuck in my mom's REd fashion fair lipstick. She was heated because that was considered an expensive tube of lipstick then. I still feel those butt whuppins

Wow...the first kind of makeup I wore... :o I can't even remember the name of the cheap brands I used back then!! It probably was the equivalent to Wet & Wild...

Anyway, I remember I first started experimenting w/ makeup when I was in 10th grade. I wore black liquid eyeliner (I have a good, steady hand for applying makeup), colored mascara (electric blue was my favorite color ...SHHHH! don't tell nobody), colored eyeliners (remember when the army fatigue look was in--picture eyeliner that color, among others :o) and different shades of lip gloss...I remember my Mom used to say this one shade of lipgloss I used to wear "looked like I smeared isht on my lips"

Ah, the memories...

Thank goodness that phase was VERY short-lived...I moved on up the ladder to wearing more sublte, natural-looking colors that compliment my beautiful face :D...Now I am a MAC Diva!!!! Can you say "Addicted"?!

Steeltrap 02-23-2002 11:42 AM

I dabbled briefly in make-up when I was in eighth grade -- foundation, powder, a bit of lipstick.

But junior high school was a horrible time in my life, so I stopped quickly.

I did not resume makeup until I was in college. Oddly, I never used Fashion Fair. I used private-label foundations for a while, then started using Naomi Sims when I lived in Tennessee.

About 11 years ago, however, I began using Prescriptives foundation and still use it. Today, I use powder from Sephora Artist (no color neutral), eyeshadow from Stila, eyeliner from L'Oreal, mascara from Olay, Prescriptives or Clinique blush, Prescriptives lip liner and lipstick from Prescriptives or Club Monaco.

showstopper_1908 02-23-2002 01:08 PM

I used to play with my mothers make-up when I was younger. It didn't look too nice so I was turned off from make-up until I was about 16. I began to wear those Cover Girl gloss/lipsticks. I wore those out until I was 17 and for my senior Prom in 1998 I wore powder/lipstick/mascara all from Aveda. I loved Aveda's colors and only wore Aveda until last year when I began to wear MAC. Now I pretty much stick to MAC.

I have been doing pageants since I was 5 so I wore make-up for all my pageants but I didn't start wearing make-up regularly until I was in high school. I wear make-up every day if I know have to go somewhere but if I'm just hanging out at home then I won't wear any. ZLAM UDZETA

When I was a little girl my mother would kiss me after she put on her lipstick to put some on my lips. It made me feel so grown up! I wore lip gloss in junior high school--the flavored kind that tasted like bubble gum was my favorite! I think I ate it more than I actually wore it! Befor my 11th grade prom my mother let me get a Fashion Fair make-over. I got the works--foundation, blush, eyeshadow, etc. I think I wore it all 2 or 3 times after that night. I still only wear minimum makeup. Most days, nothing or just lipstick and eyeliner. I do wear foundation and eyeshadow sometimes, but I can't remember the last time I wore blush!

HyperBeauty 02-23-2002 10:23 PM

I was in about 8th grade when my mom let me wear a little bit of makeup. I was using Clinique blush and flavored lip gloss. Then later on, it was the SAME color of Clinique blush *still is* even though I'm 20 years old now. I also use Clinique lipstick, and Lancome mascara and eyeliner. :D

HyperBeauty 02-23-2002 10:25 PM

LMBO! My mom just about killed me when I got into her Fashion Fair lipstick and her LAVENDER eyeshadow once. She practically scrubbed it off my face!

Prescriptives ROCKS! They're my second favorite department store brand after MAC.

These days I pay less attention to where I buy the makeup than how it applies and whether it breaks me out. Shoot, even Kevyn Aucoin uses drugstore brands now and again! ;) My favorite foundation is still MAC's Studio Fix (NW45), but I also love Clinique's Stay True and Iman's I-Iman liquid foundation. I've been wearing colours by a Canadian based line called Nacara for eyeshadow and blush, but I also have a couple of Black Opal eyeshadows that I return to again and again.

I'm a lipstick hound - one day I counted eight different lipsticks on the bottom of my purse. You'd think I had lips like the back end of a Buick! :D My favourite lipsticks, believe it or not, are Revlon lipsticks. They cover well, they're not too terribly expensive, and they last fairly well. I also like Interface and some MAC lipsticks too.

I wasn't allowed to wear make-up until I was 15. When my birthday rolled around I wore Posner lipstick in Purple Flame and black or blue eyeliner all through high school.

I now wear Loreal lipsticks, eye shadow, and Volumonous mascara daily. The mascara really makes my eyes "pop". I don't wear foundation or powder at all, although I'm now "researching" colors and brands to use for special occasions.

Cover Girl

I can remember when I was in the 4th grade I would sneak my mothers lip stick out of her purse and put it on. It wasn't so much that I wanted to change my appearance externally, rather, that I wanted to be like my mom and wear the things I saw her applying to herself.
Later on I began a modeling career and had tuns of makeup at my disposal. I guess after being so heavil exposed to it, I began to wear less and less of it in my teenage years. It got to the point that all I needed was my clear lip gloss and mascara.
Now, I wear Bobbi Brown makeup -- I love this line. It is wonderful for all women, especially women of color; including the 'dark- skin' sisters (like myself). I have turned family and friends all on to this makeup line for its fabulous finish and texture. When I wear it, it gives me a 'glow'ing effect. I only wear it when I want a "polished" finish. Otherwise, I just wear the body shimmers with lip gloss (of course, never leave home without it), and mascara.
Makeup of course is only to enhance the natural beauty that we all possess, but we must admit that when applied correclty, it enhances our beauty soooo well!
God bless you all and sorry for the hiatus :) !

PrettyKitty 02-27-2002 01:19 PM

I was only allowed to wear lipstick post 16...took me along time to wear make up thereafter...and now I tend to stick to MAC.

SFactor 02-27-2002 04:31 PM

:D I know I'm telling my age - but it was that Mood lipstick - it was green and it was suppose to turn the color based on the mood that you were in!!!! My boyfriend at the time bought me the mood ring to accent the lips!! :D :D :D :D

Dang I guess I stayed in the same mood every day - because it was always a dark-colored red on me.......

Cherry Jubilee was the bomb back in the day - I bet you can't get me to wear it today!!!

HopefulProspective 02-27-2002 04:35 PM

Excuse the naive question, but what is MAC?

I have been wearing make-up since jr. high. When I first started using it, I painted it on. But now, I wear it a whole lot lighter with many natural pencils and shadows from Mary K. I don't use their foundations because to me it makes black women look ashy. The same goes for foundation from Fashion fair. It has too many orangy undertones for my complexion.

M.A.C., or Makeup Art Cosmetics, is a cosmetic brand. It is normally sold in its own boutiques or upscale department stores. Many people, black and white, love MAC cosmetics because of the variety of colors that they provide. They literally have something for everyone.

I have M.A.C.'s "The Blot" powder, which I need to buy a new compact of. I also have one M.A.C. lipstick, the purplish shade called Stiletto. It's good stuff. :)

Mood lipstick, dang that takes me back.

My mood never changed either,
my lips were always a bright pink :)

I REMEMBER I WAS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL WHEN I STARTED WEARING LIP STICK. I DO NOT WEAR EVERYTHING ELSE. LATELY I HAVE NOT BEEN WEAR ANY LIP STICK AND I THINK I LOOK REALLY YOUNG. I'M 24 BUT WITHOUT LIP STICK I LOOK MUCH YOUNGER. I'VE ALWAYS HAD CLEAR SKIN SO I NEVER USED FOUNDATION OR ANYTHING. I REALLY LIKE WEARING LIP STICK. I JUST WANTED TO SEE IF I WAS STILL CUTE WITHOUT IT AND I AM.:D :p

Thought I'd resurrect this thread. . .

Went to the mall the other day and passed by the Prescriptives counter. They had some powdered foundation out there, and I'm thinking about going back to get it. I tried some on and liked it. It was very lightweight, and my Mary Kay foundation is old and probably needs to be thrown away (I do makeup probably twice a month and I've had the MK foundation WAY too long).

I noticed in an earlier post that Soror Steeltrap was using Prescriptives. Soror, are you still wearing it?

Somebody please help me before I go spending $28 on that stuff!

Soror, I'm still wearing Prescriptives Traceless, Level 3, the tinted moisturizer and still enjoying it. Oddly, I don't wear makeup much in the office anymore, since I don't go out on assignment as much as I used to.
It's lightweight and pretty long-lasting.

aephi alum 10-06-2004 01:01 PM

Interesting thread. I wouldn't have posted on it in 2002 because I was still in my "I can't be bothered with makeup" phase... :)

When I was in middle school, I noticed some of my classmates wearing makeup. (We're talking 11yos here. A lot of them didn't know what they were doing, and wound up looking like they should be working a street corner. ) So naturally, I started bugging my parents about wearing makeup. I never knew there were so many variations on the word "no". :p I was allowed very pale lip gloss and that was *it*.

When I turned 13, my mother took me to the Clinique counter at the local Macy's for a makeover. I was restricted to light colors, but got foundation, powder, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and lipstick (as well as some things from the skin care line). I was shown how to apply it, and my mother said I could wear it as long as I wore it correctly - if she saw me looking like a hooker, no more makeup.

I stuck to Clinique through high school. When I got to college, I found I didn't have the time to "put on my face" every morning, and gradually stopped wearing makeup at all. Only within the past year or so have I gotten back into it. I save the full eyeshadow/lipstick/blush thing for special occasions, and just throw on some lip gloss most days. (I wonder what my 11yo self would have thought of that ... lol)

I have no brand loyalty, though. I have a mixed bag of Clinique, MAC, Prescriptives, Estee Lauder, a couple of no-name items, and even a tube or two of the dreaded mood lipstick (I love it, it's very long lasting!).

MeezDiscreet 10-06-2004 02:20 PM

i was using the MAC foundation and one day i saw a photograph of myself and had to ask all my folks why they let me walk around like that!! i love MAC but the foundation just isn't for me. i found the perfect powder at sephora. it's their brand and it's a little cheaper but still is perfect for me. i also tried the maybelline matte mousse and i must say that it covers really well without me looking too made-up.

sdj26 10-06-2004 02:22 PM

I first wore make in 6th grade. Wet and Wild lip stick and eye liner. My mother was not strict on that. She said make yourself up but do not leave the porch. I was wearing foundation by high school but not daily. Now. with three young children I barely have time to wash my face let alone make it up.
