Number of sororities/fraternities

Heya, I was wondering how many sororities and fraternities people have on their campus. We have 4 and 4. Is that a small number? I know we were trying to get another Sorority, But we don't have 50 in all the other ones, so we can't.

ilovemyglo 06-11-2001 03:27 PM

We have seven sororities and eleven fraternities although Kappa Sig is trying to recolonize. Only one sorority is at total, and the rest range from 45 openings to 5 openings. Our chapter total here is 95, and the one chapter at total has 101. There is also Ceres sorority (Farmhouse's sister sorority) they are National, but not NPC.

sigmagrrl 06-11-2001 03:28 PM

I have noticed that on most campuses, there are less sororities than fraternities...Why is that?!?!

Anyway, at my alma mater, there were 10 NIC fraternities and 6 NPC sororities...3 NPHC sororities, 3 NPHC fraternities...

UMgirl 06-11-2001 03:33 PM

University of Michigan Greek System

IFC = 30 Fraternities
Panhel = 16 sororities
BGA= 4 sororities, 5 fraternities
Latino/Latina= 2 sororities 1 Frat (all in IFC now)
Indian = 1 and 1
Asian - 1 and 1
Multicultural = 1 sorority

Plus we have so many underground frats, that i dont know how many.

UMgirl 06-11-2001 03:36 PM

that could be because there are 66 fraternities in the NIC, while the NPC only have 26 sororities.

Demon Knight 06-11-2001 04:51 PM

On the Long Beach Campus, we have one fraternity and thats Phi Kappa Tau, the rest are sororities http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif sorry I couldn't resist, now seriously we have eight fraternities, and seven sororities. The NPC has 3 fraternities, and 2 sororities, so a total of 11 fraternities, and 9 sororities.

KBear, I guess it depends on the size of the school and if they will support more Greek Orgs. Some small schools have a larger % of Greeks. Pittsburg St U Ks has the 4 th largeest enrollment in the state but only have 6 Fraternitys and 3 Soroitys. ADP and KD have left along with a local who had a chance to go with Phi Mu. It is a shame as the Greeks do most of the work on campus. I am sure though that if a group is strong enough and the school is willing, there is an Org who would take a good look. We must always look to expand the Greek System as we are the BEST!

I think because sororities and NPC are more rigid in trying to keep the groups at the same size (through using quota/total, etc), whereas fraternities can range from 20-100 and IFC doesn't seem a crap. I've seen fraternities with 10 guys that the national was totally fine with it.

BrianMUDU 06-11-2001 10:33 PM

Miami University has around 28 fraternities and 24 sororities, I believe that is right http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

KayDeeCareBear 06-11-2001 11:10 PM

There are a lot of people at our school, and it's a commuter school, which is probably why we never reach total. KD usually has the second most, but after this year we're going to have 17/50. We're hoping for a nice rush, but it doesn't look too good right now. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif Since we don't have houses, rush is held in rooms in the Student Center... and, well, we get the smallest room because we have the fewest girls. It's in the basement with the roaches and mice! UGH!

Looking on the bright side though, With so few Greek groups, Greek Week goes relatively smoothly! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

I got to a rather small school with only about 1500 students, we have I think 8 fraternities, and I think maybe 6 sororities, Im not sure though.

SilverTurtle 06-12-2001 02:40 AM

I went to a small school. There were:
  • Local Sororities: 3
  • Local Fratenernities: 3 (plus one more that lost its charter several years before I got there, but still seemed to have a few new members every year)
  • National PFA groups: 2
  • National Service sorority (I don't know what, if any, council): 1
  • National Service Fratenrity: 1
  • There were also a number of honorary groups, I don't know how many

At our fantastic state school in PA (Bloomsburg) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif we have:

5 NPC Sororities
5 Local Sororities

5 National Fraternities
3 Local Fraternties
a bazillion unrecognized fraternties http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

1 NPHC Fraternity, although Omega Psi Phi is there and unrecognized by campus
2 NPHC Sororities

and then there is Alpha Phi Omega, Lambda Sigma Upsilon and Mu Sigma Upsilon, which don't fall under any category.

zete_boy 06-12-2001 11:19 AM

Dalhousie University:

3 NIC Fraternities (Zeta Psi, Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta)
1 Canadian National Fraternity (Phi Kappa Pi)
1 Medical Fraternity (Phi Chi)
1 NPHC Womans Fraternity (Alpha Gamma Delta)
2 Local Sororities (Iota Beta Chi, Omega Pi)

Yeah our campus is hella small, plus our univeristy won't recognize us, won't stop us, but won't recognize us

sorority. BUt I know you meant no harm by it ;)

LeslieAGD 06-13-2001 09:27 AM

9 Sororities
Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Xi Delta, Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Zeta, Sigma Delta Tau, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Nu Phi (local), Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Phi Sigma Sigma

11 Fraternities
Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Phi Alpha (local), Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Nu, Sigma Tau Gamma, Sigma Phi Eplison, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Sigma Kappa, Phi Sigma Phi, Arm of Honor (local)

*Kappa Sigma is also on our campus but not affiliated with our IFC

Other orgs. I am aware of: 1 religious fraternity, 1 service fraternity, 2 honor fraternities, 2 hispanic sororities, 1 hispanic fraternity

For the BGLOs, I know there's Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, Iota Phi Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Psi...I think I might be missing one?

(Katey, help me out here...)

ztafairy 06-13-2001 04:34 PM

Here at ECU, there are:

13 IFC fraternities
9 NPC sororities
3 NPHC fraternities
3 NPHC sororities
3 Nationally named service organizations
and many other honor societies, service organizations, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong any of you Pirates out there.

Harmony 06-13-2001 11:09 PM

At Penn State I believe we have 55 IFC fraternities and 20 Panhellenic sororities. We have 8 BGLOs and 1 latino covered by the NPHC and I a ridiculous # of business, honors, local, etc greek orgs.

SSS1365 06-14-2001 12:37 AM

NPC=9
IFC=6
NPHC= 6 (I think)

ees125 06-16-2001 03:52 PM

I am not sure about fraternities at PSU, Harmony, but I do know there are 21 PHC sororities.

AlphaChiGirl 06-16-2001 09:20 PM

My school pales in comparison to PSU, but oh well.

2 NPC sororities
4 NIC fraternities
3 local fraternities (formerly national, but lost charters due to various reasons)
2 national co-ed societies
2 NPHC sororities (part of citywide chapters)
2 NPHC fraternities (part of citywide chapters)
2 Latina sororities
2 Latino fraternities

So, Greek life, but not residential Greek life, is pretty big where I go to school.

penguintpa_lady 06-16-2001 10:23 PM

i go to a very smal school in ohio(shawnee state) we currently only have 4 greek org. on campus.

Alpha Gamma Delta is not an NPHC organization.

amycat412 06-17-2001 12:58 AM

When I was there--its different now-- U of Southern Cal had about 14 sororities and about 17 fraternities, and, if I remember correctly, 2 NPHC sororities and at least 1 NHPC fraternity.

NPC Sororities were:
Chi Omega
Delta Gamma
Kappa Alpha Theta
Pi Beta Phi
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Delta Delta Delta
Gamma Phi Beta
Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Phi
Alpha Delta Pi
Sigma Kappa
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Episilon Phi
Alpha Gamma Delta

--AEPhi, Chi O, Sigma Kappa, AOPi and AGD are no longer there.

AGD and AOPi left in the late 80's, the rest in the mid 90's, for a variety of reasons, usually quota problems, a few academic problems, greek system at SC was very competitive--missing quota for a couple years in a row could be a death sentence for a sorority, not keeping house GPA average at 3.0 or higher put a lot of pressure on members.

For example, Sigma Kappa came on in the fall of 88 and I'm not sure when they left, but it wasn't too much more than 5 or 6 years later. My house, Chi O, had been there since 1940 and when I graduated in 91, we were at quota --which was usually about 120 --but 5 years later--the chapter was struggling with 45 members and closed.

IFC Fraternities included:
Sigma Chi, ATO, LXA, Kappa Sigma, Sig Ep, Sigma Pi, TKE, Delta Tau Delta, Beta, SAM, Phi Delta Theta, KA, Delta Chi, Theta Xi, Chi Phi, FIJI, Pi Psi, Sigma Nu...that's all I remember.

Hey KayDee...I'm at UM-Dearborn so I totally know what you're talking about with the whole commuter school thing. Total at UM-D is 45, and there's only one sorority that has reached that. We only have 4 known sororities, and 3 fraternities:

Phi Mu
Delta Phi Epsilon
Phi Sigma Sigma
Alpha Omega Epsilon (engineering, not social)

Delta Sigma Phi
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Theta Tau (engineering)

There are also a few other black GLO's, but they really don't come around so no one knows who they are. We used to have Sig Ep, but I guess they got shut down.

Oh yeah...I know one of ur sisters..Christina

amycat,

I won't put their full names, but my chi-o friend who graduated from USC in 89 is Tina V. and the one who graduated in 88 is Allison F. Sound familiar at all? I've known both of them for ages. We went to high school together. (BHHS)

It's such a coincidence that you know people who went of U of Maryland. Were these guys in frats?

I'm dying to find out if I know them and if you know my friends! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Leslie, email me. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif its in my profile. They were graduating as I was pledging and we had several Tinas and Allisons (and Amys, ha ha).

amycat412 06-17-2001 10:00 PM

OMG Leslie Anne! My best friend, also a XO from SC went to BHHS class of 87. So did my freshman roommate--a Sigma Kappa at SC, also class of 87.

DBPM04 06-17-2001 11:13 PM

I go to U of Illinois...which i think is the largest greeek system...31 sororities and 50+ fraternities...

dbpm04,
there are only 26 pan-hell sororities...is your list including black glo's etc? if not, you may want to check your info!!!

moe.ron 06-18-2001 10:38 AM

Fraternities 12:
Alpha Omega Zeta (Local - CoEd), Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Lambda Upsilon Lambda, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Kappa Tau, Phi Beta Sigma, Phi Sigma Kappa, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Tau GAmma, Sigma Lambda Beta, Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Sororities 8:
Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Delta Tau, Sigma Gamma Rho, Sigma Lambda Upsilon, Zeta Phi Beta

Harmony 06-18-2001 08:42 PM

PSU had 21 national PHC sororities last semester but only 20 next.

TKEmz894 06-19-2001 12:02 AM

I go to Nicholls St. (louisiana)
we have: Tau Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Alpha, Sigma Nu, Theta Xi, and Phi kappa theta
we have: Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, Alpha Sigma Tau, and tri sig
and 4 black frats, and 3 black sororities, oh and The ZOO a black dorm frat(they are cool)
But we are a small commuter school, and there is absolutely no room for more groups in IFC, they have already tried.............

Leslie-
the NPHC sorority you missed is Sigma Gamma Rho, also, there are 2 service fraternities recognized and one not (Theta Nu Kappa). Also, would you consider AEPi still on campus? I would but like the way that Kappa Sigma is. Also, how many SAM's are on campus? Is ther enough to consider them on campus? I know there were a few years ago but they are also underground. Also, what hae to heard about Theta Chi comming back? They were kicked out right before we were freshman and I heard they were comming back one day?

At the College of Charleston (SC, not WV for clarification):

8 IFC fraternities (ATO just got kicked off campus - again, and TKE is trying to colonize, but it is doubtful that they will be recognized by IFC b/c almost all of the fraternities on campus are in financial trouble and I think the college wants to wait to invite another GLO on campus until the other fraternities improve)

7 Nat'l Panhellenic Sororities (Most are going strong, and I heard from an Alpha Chi from Clemson Univ. that they are looking to colonize here)

4 Pan-Greek Sororities (AKA, Zeta Phi Beta, Delta Sigma Theta, & Sigma Gamma Rho)
4 Pan-Greek Fraternities (APhiA, Phi Beta Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, & Kappa Alpha Psi)
THe Pan-Greeks are becoming much stronger on campus, and are really looking to expand. They are doing very well.

SigmaGrrl: The reason why there are less sororities on campuses is because NPC and nationals have quotas that houses must meet. Every campus has a Panhell that dictates who comes and goes...if they feel that too many girls aren't getting into houses because lack of space, THEY go out and search for a national to come. Usually, this is rare, unless a campus gets a huge influx of women in their freshman class that all want to go greek...fraternities don't have the stringent colonization standards as sororities. On our campus, the 6 we have have a hard time all filling quota of 100, we did have 7, but ZTA died out 5 years ago. All our sororities have a house, and for a new sorority to come in and get a house in our city would be a difficult task.

SLOTheta 06-23-2001 04:08 AM

At Cal Poly, 17000 students:
18 IFC Fraternities (15-110 guys each)
(Sigma Chi is no longer recognized by Cal Poly, but still by Nationals, and Delta Tau was just suspened for 25 years)
6 NPC Sororities (around 100 girls each) (AChiO, Gamma Phi, Alpha Phi, Sigma Kappa, AOPi, KATheta, we used to have ZTA, but died off, low numbers)
2 Asian Sororities (About 10-15 girls each)
3 Asian Fraternities (10-30 each)
3 Latina Sororities
3 Latino Fraternities
2 Black Fraternities
2 Black Sororities
1 Religious Fraternity (AGO)
1 Social Fraternity (APhiO)
2 Business Fraternities (AKPsi and DSP)

I think this is the complete list, but it's all from memory
