Now what in the world was he going to do with all those bodies?

First, it was reported that this "man" had 50 bodies in his possession, now it's up to 200? What's really going on?

Why? :(

The only thing I don't understand is how in the world can an incinerator be broken for 15 years without getting it fixed. FRAUD FRAUD FRAUD! What a shame! What a shame! What a shame! God bless his family as well as the families who trusted him to cremate their loved ones.

I just heard Dan Rather say that it had been broken since 1996. Either way, that guy and his parents had a SERIOUS problem.

I didn't realize that he was black, either, until I looked at this story. The whole thing makes me ill, having lost my father just over five years ago. Those poor families. :(

I didn't know he was black either. Just what was he thinking? And his parents home is right there! Are they blind?! I couldn't believe it. I can't imagine what the family members of the deceased are feeling right now.

Dancerella1908 02-19-2002 12:26 PM

That is sooooo horrible. People have entrusted this person with the final arrangements of their loved one(s) and they are betrayed. It makes you wonder what did he give the families as remains and how could he stand the stinch of all those decaying bodies. Now the loved ones have to go through seeking closure to this situation emotionally and legally. :(

Sexy Mocha 02-20-2002 11:49 AM

Why did he have to be black lord? :o

I still can't believe it. What in the world was going through this man's mind?!? Wasn't there an odor that would have alerted someone?
A while back, someone posted about the "Shamous" people: Black people who bring shame or embarassment to their race
i.e. Darryl Strawberry, R.Kelly, etc.
I think this loser that hid the bodies for all these years should be King of the Shamous people.

I don't understand how people can be that sick. That's sickening. We should keep those families in our prayers.

The bodies were embalmed,so the smell was very minimal. As you know in Georgia and South Carolina there are those Paper Mills. So a low tone stench isn't out of the ordinary. Anyways, my question is: Even if the incenerator was broken, Why didn't he at least dig a pit and pour gas on those bodies and burn them up? It's cheap and he could've been getting rid of all of the bodies on a regular basis. No one would have even noticed. " Hey it smells like somethings burning over at the crematorium." DUH?!!?

Sexy Mocha 02-20-2002 12:13 PM

Why didn't he just get the dam incinerator fixed? I can't believe anyone could be that lazy/cheap/insensitive? I could understand him temporarily hiding the first batch of bodies when he realized the incinerator was broken.....(you know, get it repaired and the next morning or so burn the bodies) but really, this is the worst case of procrastination I've ever seen!

gamma_girl52 02-20-2002 12:48 PM

Ugh...

LOL @ Sexy Mocha! That is the worst!

Dexter is right on that. The bodies over there had been embalmed already. Plus, remember that this is a 16-acre property so bodies are said to be spread out everywhere. Plus, they have searched the backyard of the man who owned Tri-State and found more bodies buried there

From what the news was saying this morning, it only would have cost about $25 to actually creamate the body-but this guy was charging anywhere from $200-1500!! The whole thing is a hot mess! And it's not right to the families.

LMAO! You need Help!!!

gamma_girl52 02-20-2002 05:10 PM

QTE, you're right about that!!

Well the story was that a neighbor just "walked up" on the whole thing. I think she was walking her dog or something. Maybe the dog noticed...:p Gives new meaning to the phrase, "Somethin' doesn't smell right"

Also there was a cease and desist order out on the crematorium a few years earlier, but the state lifted it. The sad thing is that so far, all this man has been charged with is theft by deception and nothing else.

On one of the radio stations here, 107.9, the DJ called his grandfather up to get his opinion on this whole thing. Quite simply, the granddad said, "Well, maybe his gas got cut off, you know...he couldn't pay it on time". And he was for real. That had me CTFU!!!

The body count is now at about 150-200.

Not only do they have to deal with not knowing where the body of their loved one is, they have to deal with the fact that what they thought was their loved one is really a mixture of concrete, dirt and rocks. :(

the more i read about this situation, the more i become sick to my stomach. according to the paper i read today, the newest total is 139 bodies. speculation is that 'mishandling' of bodies at this place dates back at least 10 or even 20 years.

Plain ole laziness!

gamma_girl52 02-21-2002 08:33 AM

Stillwater,

I'm sure granddad didn't really mean that. You know how old folk are sometimes!

Today's body count is at 200+. My heart really does go out to those familes.

Mocha, the incenerator (sp!!) had been off since '96, but some of the bodies have been there 20 years or so. Since 1982, I believe. The clean-up costs are probably going to reach about $10-15 million dollars  and may get bigger than that.

Still, all this Marsh guy is charged with is 16 (right now) counts of theft by deception. I think that's the saddest part of any of this...they can't put a stronger charge on him right now.

The radio station here is still playing the clip. I am still CTFU even after hearing it so many times.

korkscru 02-21-2002 10:49 AM

I was also shocked to see that the guy is black. It's a MAJOR embarassment for the entire African-American community. Another sad part is that some of the bodies are those of BLACK people. This is one reason that BLACKS don't support Black-owned businesses and services. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Now THIS man is a classic SICKO. My question is how long did he think that he would be able to do this? It seems to me that all he was doing was using his property as a CEMETARY. How could one eat, sleep, and live on top of all those bodies?Believe me yall, I'm from South Carolina (born and raised). Not all Southerners (or African-Americans for that matter) are like that. Now we've got our share of sickos, but they don't make up the majority of the Southern or African-American populations.

My prayers will be with the families.

Crematory owners known as pillars of community

Crematory owners known as pillars of community

Marsh

NOBLE, Ga. — The Marsh family, who ran the crematory here where authorities are uncovering hundreds of bodies, was a pillar of the community. Everybody says so. They are teachers and local political activists who moved in the highest circles of Walker County social life. Ray Brent Marsh, 28, who is under suicide watch in the county jail charged with 16 felony counts of theft by deception, is widely described as a smart businessman and a caring father of a newborn daughter.

techie_girl_44 02-22-2002 01:17 PM

i heard..

I heard on the radio last night that a judge issued a gag order for this case. Which ,in conjunction with all the mess that's happened, makes me think that there is some REALLY dirty sheisty stuff going on. I don't think the crematorium (sp?) owner is the only one involved in this mess. I can't wait to see what happens.

Honeykiss1974 02-25-2002 02:39 PM

306 and counting

From www.fownews.com

NOBLE, Ga. — Searchers discovered a new pit containing five corpses and investigators said there is no end in sight to their gruesome task of finding discarded bodies on the grounds of a Georgia crematory. The magnitude of the situation has not yet been totally determined, and will not be for some time,'' said David Ashburn, the Walker County emergency management director. Tri-State crematory owner Ray Brent Marsh is led to a court hearing. Searchers found the new pit Sunday as they worked to clear trash, brush and timber from grounds near Tri-State Crematory. They found bones scattered near the surface, then dug by hand and came upon five corpses. The bodies brought the total to 306. Sixty-five had been identified, and authorities hoped DNA collected from families would help identify more. Already, more than 3,500 families have provided information to investigators, Ashburn said.
Some of the families joined residents of Walker County at church services Sunday, using their faith to respond to crisis. How would you explain what happened back here?'' Charles Cornwell, pastor of Center Point Baptist Church, said as he stretched his arm in the direction of the nearby crematory. I think it could be summed up in one word — sin. Sin does two things. Sin blinds us and sin makes us do dumb things.''
The crematory operator, Ray Brent Marsh, remained in jail pending a judge's decision on whether to grant him a bond. There was no word on when the decision might come.

tickledpink 02-25-2002 08:33 PM

 Doesn't it seem like it would've taken more of an effort to bury the bodies than to burn them? Something doesn't sound right....

ClassyLady 02-25-2002 10:40 PM

This is just plain old nasty and sick. Sometimes I wonder what in the hell is wrong with people.

I don't understand why a cousin is trying to place the blame on the mother. The son is the one who buried bodies all over the place, not the mother. Whoever is the cousin was trying to make it seem like the mother drove her son to bury the bodies by making him take over the family business. Every mother I know would persuade or even force their child to take over a family business in the case of an illness. She was probably just trying to preserve the legacy that her husband started for her children.

Anyway, my mother always says that you know it when black people do something wrong because the media always has a picture. Whenever a black person commits a crime, the news will always have their face plastered all over the television and the paper. If this man had been white, we probably would not know what he looks like.

Man in Crematory Case Granted Bail
Tue Feb 26,11:01 AM ET
By ERIN McCLAM, Associated Press Writer

NOBLE, Ga. (AP) - A man charged with accepting payment for cremations, then leaving the corpses to rot on the grounds of a Georgia crematory, may go free on $100,000 bail, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Magistrate Judge Jerry Day said there was no evidence that Ray Brent Marsh was dangerous or posed a flight risk.

Marsh, 28, has been the operator of Tri-State Crematory in the northwest Georgia community of Noble since 1996. He is charged with 16 counts of theft by deception.

Prosecutors had argued Marsh should not be released because the intense outrage in the community would pose a danger to him. Marsh's attorney, Ken Poston, said concern for Marsh's safety was no reason to deny him freedom.

So far, investigators have discovered 331 corpses on the crematory grounds but say more than half the property still needs to be searched.

Authorities said Monday it could be late summer before all the bodies are identified. Some workers, in their 11th day of scouring the grounds, are growing weary and occasionally sick as the emotional toll mounts.

"Everybody involved in this process, from the word go, is suffering some kind of emotional strain," said David Ashburn, the Walker County emergency director. "It's things that you and I were never meant to be exposed to."

Officials estimated they had searched only three or four acres of the Tri-State grounds, which comprise at least eight acres, excluding buildings and a small lake. Authorities are working on a plan to drain the lake.

Family members lined up Monday to give blood samples, hoping their DNA would help investigators identify more bodies. Only 70 of the 331 corpses have been identified.

Dr. Kris Sperry, the chief Georgia medical examiner, said a full database will not be complete until late summer.

"This is a very slow, time-consuming process because of the volume of tests that have to be done," he said.

Donating blood for a DNA test meant fresh grief for Elaine Bray of Chattanooga, Tenn., who arrived at the county civic center down the road from Tri-State with a mug of small pebbles — part of which she thought were the remains of her brother, who died four years ago.

"All I wanted to do is give him a proper death," she said. "This is what I got."

Eddie Young of Crystal River, Fla., said he hoped DNA testing might tell him for sure whether the body of his mother, who died in November, was left to decompose on the grounds of the crematory.

"I know her soul went to heaven, but to think that my mother might be out there — it's so hard to accept," he said. "We had our closure through the funeral, and now it's like it's reopened."

Something else has got to be up...black people don't just kick it with dead bodies around the house. More Charges Filed in Corpses Case
Tue Mar 5, 1:20 PM ET
By KRISTEN WYATT, Associated Press Writer

LaFAYETTE, Ga. (AP) - Authorities filed 56 additional charges Tuesday against a crematory operator accused of discarding hundreds of corpses he was paid to cremate.

Slideshows

AP Photo
Tri-State Crematory

The new charges bring to 174 the number of theft by deception counts against Ray Brent Marsh, who remains in Walker County Jail. A magistrate denied Marsh bond on Monday, noting that investigators were likely to file further charges.

So far, 339 rotting corpses have been discovered dumped in pits, left in sheds and stacked in vaults at the Tri-State Crematory.

Authorities continued Tuesday to drain a small lake nearby where a skull and a torso were discovered last month. Officials estimate the lake is 8 feet deep at its deepest point.

Authorities said they will probably spend more than a week dredging the dry lake bed for human remains.

The charges accuse Marsh of allegedly taking payment to cremate the dead and instead passing off cement powder and dirt as ashes.

Investigators have said Marsh told them the incinerator was broken.

But on Monday, authorities disclosed for the first time that the incinerator is working properly. State emergency agency spokeswoman Lisa Ray said the machine's manufacturer successfully tested it last week.

In another disclosure, prosecutor Buzz Franklin said investigators had discovered photos of decomposed bodies on Marsh's office computer. Franklin did not say why Marsh was storing the photos and declined to elaborate.

Magistrate Judge Jerry Day, noting more charges were likely, denied Marsh bail for a third time. Prosecutors said they were worried Marsh might be killed if released.

Sheriff Steve Wilson testified that at a victims' meeting one woman said she wanted to hang Marsh, and the threat was met with thunderous applause.

Defense attorney Ken Poston criticized the prosecution for discussing the threats. "If that isn't inviting trouble and torches and ropes, then I don't know what is," Poston said.
