Sorority Symbols...I see them everywhere!

I was at HomeGoods/TJ Maxx this afternoon and saw a plethora of items with kites, anchors, pandas, arrows, sailboats, penguins, turtles, giraffes, etc. These were not in the children's section! Anyone else seeing things like this? I'm not sure if I'm hyper-aware because it's rec writing season or if there really are more symbolic/mascot type items available.

thetalady 07-08-2015 12:15 AM

You saw KITES???? I never find kites! I gotta go look locally....

But yes, I do notice LOTS of lions, a million owls, and plenty of fleur-de-lis. arrows, etc.

Xidelt 07-08-2015 03:08 AM

I saw little squirrel shaped lip glosses by the checkout at Joann's today. My mind immediately screamed "alpha gam!"

I seem to personally be on an anchor kick. My mom and dad gave me an Alex and Ani bracelet with an anchor. My daughter gave me flip flops with anchors, and I picked up a tote bag with an anchor. All in a span of a few weeks. I guess I'm celebrating my inner DG (although I'm ASA all the way).

Titchou 07-08-2015 08:27 AM

Lots of anchors around this summer! Love it!

FSUZeta 07-08-2015 08:41 AM

Saw a stunning cream colored serving platter with decorative raised trim featuring a crown on Wayfair and I am tempted....oh so tempted.

Sciencewoman 07-08-2015 09:02 AM

If anyone sees any crescent motif house decor items, please post, because our house corp board is always on the lookout!

chi-o_cat 07-08-2015 09:08 AM

Me too! The other day someone on FB re-posted some scammy “Win a Free Carnival Cruise” thing, which supposedly included a cruise, t-shirts, and a gift bag. The photo was of a bunch of paper gift bags lined up on a table with cut-out anchors ribbon-tied to the handles. My first thought was “I think that photo’s probably stolen from some Delta Gamma (or AST, even) Bid Day Pinterest page.”

AZTheta 07-08-2015 10:19 AM

Di - it's a great time to be finding anchors (for DG and AST). Lots of summer sales.

Kites? really? will go check this week!

Do it! Do it!

NutBrnHair 07-08-2015 01:03 PM

Owls have been so "in" for the past several years. I hear the next big thing is foxes!

WhiteRose1912 07-08-2015 04:00 PM

Y'all need to let me know if you stumble across anything compass-y. I'm not about the penguin life.

Xidelt 07-08-2015 04:11 PM

Otis B Jewelry has some really pretty jewelry with silver compass charms.

Jackpot! One of the necklaces even comes with a pearl and a gem, with a sapphire option. Perfection. Gratzi!

Xidelt 07-08-2015 05:36 PM

You're welcome! I <3 her jewelry!

carnation 07-08-2015 08:20 PM

Hobby Lobby is full of sorority symbols!

littlesquirrel 07-09-2015 11:56 AM

I saw some cute quatrefoil goodies at Meijer's for my Midwestern Phi Mus.

jolene 07-09-2015 02:00 PM

I never see quills. However, there's blue teddy bears easily found. :D

The "local" Hobby Lobby is about 10 miles away, but will be worth the trip! Am I the only one seeing quartefoils by the dozens??

Just remember exactly what you are supporting if you shop there. Maybe you're okay with making it harder to get birth control, but maybe you're not, and shopping/not shopping there is a political statement these days.

carnation 07-09-2015 05:03 PM

Honeychile, it's definitely worth the trip to see all the symbols! Plus you can get a head start on fall, Halloween, and even Christmas decorations!

FSUZeta 07-09-2015 05:20 PM

I'm having some artwork re- matted at Hobby Lobby. They do good, affordable work.

They didn't ban birth control, but abortifacients. Please educate yourself and don't do a knee-jerk thing. I hate that the mere mention of a business turns into a political thing. Their insurance covers birth control pills. This is what their plan covers:
Male condoms
Female condoms
Diaphragms with spermicide
Sponges with spermicide
Cervical caps with spermicide
Spermicide alone
Birth-control pills with estrogen and progestin (“Combined Pill")
Birth-control pills with progestin alone (“The Mini Pill")
Birth control pills (extended/continuous use)
Contraceptive patches
Contraceptive rings
Progestin injections
Implantable rods
Vasectomies
Female sterilization surgeries
Female sterilization implants

Yep, they are sooo deprived of birth control. For reference: www.hobbylobbycase.com/faq

^What she said.

Haven't been to a Hobby Lobby in a while, but plan to go soon to snoop around! I pass two different Michael's every day, but I'd like to see what else is out there.

thetalady 07-09-2015 06:12 PM

Jamberry has come out with a new line of sorority nails... not all fo the NPC's, but several groups represented:

Jamberry Sorority Collection

Don't get to HL too often since I'm not crafty and they aren't super close to me (actually, they're not that far, but the traffic is psycho to get there), but my DD is OBSESSED with peacocks and when we were there last she kept wanting all this peacock stuff. LOL If there was a sorority with a peacock mascot she'd totally want to join just by that. One of my in-laws went to Upper Iowa University and they are the Fighting Peacocks. We tease that she'll want to go there.

I never wear nail polish, but suddenly I need the azure blue nails with the lion!!

jolene 07-09-2015 08:05 PM

Our DD is obsessed with blue. LOL I'm a total girly girl and when I have my nails done, I usually ask her preference for colors. It's either a sort of blue or a peacock color. However, last time I went with red for July 4.

On a different note, has anyone has Alex and Ani charms engraved? My college best friend was a Phi Mu, but we were Rho Chis together and since been inseparable.

Dear Sister, Please do your research on the facts about pregnancy, abortifacients, what evidence Hobby Lobby is using for their reasoning that IUDs are abortifacients, and what evidence is out there in terms of this claim.

An example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2623730

Science doesn't accept the maybes on faith.

Here's a read you could find interesting: http://ncronline.org/blogs/grace-mar...d-what-it-isnt

jolene 07-09-2015 08:08 PM

So all of those methods of birth control are invalid?

jolene 07-09-2015 08:11 PM

PS: This is why I don't like politics infiltrating a thread, 'sister' greetings or not. Sorry. Used the pill for eons until it disagreed with my system. Don't be a lemming.

Never said they were. But your point about abortifacients has not been proven as true. I can say and believe a lot of things but that doesn't make them true. If it's true then prove it. If it's not then be more clear.

I wouldn't think that's reason enough to restrict someone else's freedom but you might.

Then why perpetuate it? You didn't have to post a response.

FYI I am not a lemming. I just tried to soften the blow instead of flat out saying you're wrong.

Can we get back to arrows, anchors, pandas, giraffes, sailboats, etc?

I had to make my own SK set. I did lavender chevrons with a maroon heart on one wrap in the set.

jolene 07-09-2015 08:44 PM

That was my point but we got directed elsewhere. And to Sunshine, I didn't make the thread political. I only pointed out fallacies. Someone else headed us down that rabbit hole.

Yeah, let's.

About quatrefoils - I've been meaning to make a tote bag for my favorite phi mu. And I've been sharing crazy beautiful arrow quilts and fabrics with carnation. Rose fabrics abound, and so do iris - and any of a number of other florals. I'm a fabric addict.

Pandas, unfortunately, tend to be very childish/cartoon-like (unless Lilly Pulitzer does them and then they are just frightening). Sorry to all my AOII Panhellenic sisters.

FSUZeta 07-09-2015 09:01 PM

LP pandas WERE frightening!

jolene 07-09-2015 09:01 PM

Does anyone know if Alex and Ani charms can be engraved? My BFF is a Phi Mu but we were Rho Chis together. Would love to know before Heading to the jewelry store.

I would assume anything could be engraved, but the engraving would likely cost more than an Alex and Ani bracelet.

jolene 07-09-2015 09:35 PM

Grr. Her birthday is next week and hoped to have a PX engraved on the otherside. Oh well. Even if it's pricey, I'm sure she'll appreciate the bracelet regardless even sans the PX. She's awesome. My sistah from another... Er NPC? :D
