Rush Questions

I am going through informal rush right now, it started yesterday, and I was jsut wondering what kind of questions should I be asking?? I feel kind of overwhelmed and I can't come up with questions on the spot when the sisters ask me if there is anything else I want to know. Any suggestions on what I should be asking?

The one question I always asked was, "why did you choose XYZ?" I found it to be really helpful because you might be able to get a better idea of how the house is by what the active says.

another option

I also found asking about the philanthropy helpful. It gives them a chance to talk about the positive way they help the community, and it shows that you're interested in things other than just partying.

Something like, "I heard that your chapter supports ______. What kinds of events does the chapter sponsor for the philanthropy?"

I just went thru what you are going thru, so here is my advice :

1. Examine all of the local chapters websites as well as the national website. This will give you a feel for what the group is all about and give you an edge asking educated questions.

2. Sit down and think about what is important to YOU and evaluate what sorority stands for that on both a national and local level.

3. Be yourself, have a good time and trust your gut.

Have a great time and let us know how rush goes!

You could ask why they chose their sorority, or what they think sets it apart from the others on campus. They're not really allowed to say anything negative about other houses, but they can tell you why they felt their group really stood apart. It's not really important that you have a bunch of great questions lined up as long as you seem genuinely interested in their sorority.

It's important to find out about each of the chapters you are interested in, but it's more important to find about the members. It helps to ask what they are interested in and what kinds of things they participate in outside of their chapter. You might also want to ask what they enjoy most about the chapter or what their favorite event is.

Ok, I'm going to be nosey, but I can't help it-I love the Rush stories!! :D What school are you at, and what sororities are involved? How's it going so far? And last of all, good luck and have a great time!

I am at a college in Maryland. We have 7 sororities on campus. I went to 4 parties on Sunday, AOPi, Zeta, Alpha Phi and Phi Sig. I didn't really know what to expect when I walked into my first party, but as soon as I walked in I was greeted by a wonderful smiling face. And imediately started to feel a little more comfortable. I clicked with one girl right from the beginning and we talked and she introduced me to a bunch of the sisters. It was great. Going to those parties really made me want to go greek, I wanted to before, but this really made me excited. Seeing the bonds between the sisters just made me want it for myself. I am an only child in real life so the idea of having 70 or so sisters just makes me get all excited. I can't wait for the rest of the week. Of the 4 I went to, I felt very comfortable in 3. And have recieved 2 invites back so far, I still have all evening to get some more phone calls, but I got invited back to my top 2. :) I will keep yall informed!!

Please let us know how it goes tonight. Good luck!

I know when I was going through the XYZ girl would say "do you have any questions" and my response was always "You already answered them :D ". You might ask how the girl you're talking to has changed/grown since becoming an XYZ or what other opportunities XYZ had opened up for her. Abstract questions can really give you insight to the overall experience.
Best of Luck

Parties went well last night. I went back to 2 of them. Since we don't have sorority houses here, most of the parties are held in the Union, except all sororities have one party off campus. I am in love with one of sororities. Now I am starting to understand what everyone means that when you walk into the room, you just know. I can see myself with these girls. They are soo awesome. The other party was good, very nice girls, but not really me. I got home from everything last night and my studying was interrupted by my #1 calling me and inviting me back. The party is tonite. Wish me luck. I am so excited !!

Headdie23 02-22-2002 01:56 PM

well just got home. No bid. I'm pretty upset, but I guess I will get over it. Thanks for chatting guys!! Too bad I'm not Greek like I wanted to be.

valkyrie 02-22-2002 01:58 PM

Ohhh, I'm sorry to hear that!! Do you think that you will rush again next year?

aggieAXO 02-22-2002 02:24 PM

I am sorry you did not get a bid:( . But.... I know several people that went through rush 2X and one that went through 3X and got bids from their first choice-so it is possible to rush again (at least on my campus).

Headdie23 02-22-2002 03:12 PM

No I doubt that I will rush in the fall, I just transfered here last semester and I wil be a Junior next fall. I don't think I want to be a Junior rushing with all of those freshmen. I'm ok though, maybe I wasn't meant to be a sorority chick. I just wanted it so bad. I wish I knew why I didn't get a bid

kimmykimmy 02-22-2002 04:04 PM

Are you at Towson? What sorority did you pref? There has been some recent eliminations of sororities so perhaps that had something to do with it?

I am so sorry but it's their loss.

CJUS 02-22-2002 05:07 PM

Headdie23:( :( :( I am sorry that things didn't go the way you planned. I along with many of women want to be a part of the Greek world. Some advice to you that was given to me by some members, if you don't make this time, try again next time, maybe it had to do soemthing with you going to different parties. MAybe they didn't feel as if you were sincere in your interest. I mean I don't know how they do it in your type of sororities and fraternities, but from my knowledge in NPC you have to be interested in one sorority. It doesn't look good to be bouncing from one sorority to the next. An interest is supposed to know who sorority they want to be a part of for the rest of your life. Well, al I have to say is, try it again--the sorority that you like the best, and maybe they will see your deepest interest in their sorority. Because I have only one sorority in mind, and I have been wanting to become a part of it for over a decade now, and if I can't be a part of that at this time, then I will wait it out until my time comes, becaues if I can't be a part of this sorority, I will not be apart of another. That's how much I love that sorority from the bottom of my heart, and I am not a member.

Good Luck
