Gamma Zeta Charter on Ebay

Brothers,

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI...tem=1074880631

That link contains a listing of the gamma zeta charter from UM Amherst. While Im not sure of it's authenticity, Im a bit troubled to why a charter is being sold there. Pins and such may be personal items which could be sold, but large scale marked fraternity property would be considered stolen property in my book.

Is there a way to contact the Gamma chapter to have them be aware of this?

Tom Earp 02-17-2002 12:02 PM

I Truely Hope no one Bids on this item! Jason, you might want to check with International on this one!

lenoxxx 02-17-2002 12:52 PM

Ill let someone else talk to the people in Indianapolis.

I may send the seller an email.

Lenoxxx

Tom Earp 02-18-2002 04:29 PM

Hi there Jason -

Thanks for your email...

I had originally offered to sell the piece to your U Mass chapter months
ago. They ultimately were not interested. Maybe they will bid on the piece
after all, it is at a lower price here.

Thanks & have a good day!

Amanda

AlphaGam1019 02-18-2002 07:19 PM

sorry to butt in, but what a $%(*&#$(% of a lady to sell a fraternity charter on ebay. UGH!! People cease to amaze me.

Corbin Dallas 02-18-2002 08:25 PM

I sent an email to a guy at Gamma Zeta, but got no reply. Honestly, I don't see how this person can legally sell their charter. Perhaps someone got it when they went dormant. I noticed that they were dormant from 76-80. Hopefully there is some way IHQ can get it back. I don't see why the chapter wouldn't want it back at any cost, even though they shouldn't have to pay a dime for it!

lenoxxx 02-18-2002 08:39 PM

Our Charter got "swiped" in 1997- we found it at a junk store along with two composites- and threatened to bring the state police in, needless to say we got it for no charge!

Hi Guys,
This is my first post to this group, so hello. I have written to U-Mass advising them of the auction, and gotten a reply including another e-mail fromJason at Beta.
They have been negotiating with "Miss Manda" for some months now, but didn't pay the $200-$300 that was asked. This person has all manner of stuff from Warren Cole's estate and portions it out on ebay a little at a time. It's a lousy way to make a buck, if you ask me.

JonoBN41 02-18-2002 11:23 PM

So now the charter is on the block for $75 and I hope nobody bids, except the U-Mass guys. I have posted it on our alumni server and am writing here. I wrote to some perennial ebayers such as muranoconnection99 and anncr and they both have agreed to keep hands off.

I noticed the date on that charter too. It's exactly 30 years before ours. This May, they'll be celebrating their 60th anniversary, and us, our 30th.

All I can do is hope they get that copy (there's more than one) back in time and don't have to pay alot for it.

PS - I must have hit a key that sent the first half of this message before I was done. Sorry.

lenoxxx 02-18-2002 11:35 PM

Why does Miss Manda have Warren Albert Coles estate?

How is Gamma Zeta Charter only 60 years old they are our second chapter from like 1911 or so?

And on a good note- welcome Jono to our e-group- always good to see a new poster.

If that was my charter- Id take the state police to Miss Manda's House.

Anyway

Lenoxx,

Thanks for setting my math straight. I should have said we're 30, and they are 60 more. Our 30th, their 90th! Sorry, all these 30's 60's, 9's and 6's have got me a little dizzy.

Jono

chopper816 02-19-2002 01:19 AM

Guys, im seeing these posts on not bidding for the charter, and I can see your point. But I would think bidding on it would be smart, at least then we know the charter will be going into safe hands rather then someone who isnt even a member, but that could be my opinion. Just throwing out an idea.

The1calledTKE 02-19-2002 01:30 AM

I hope you guys get that charter back. I think the likelyhood is good because who else would want a LXA charter other than an LXA? I wouldn't want some other fraternties charter and doubt any one would want mine.

JonoBN41 02-19-2002 01:35 AM

I've suggested one of them register with an unmistakable id like charterback, or gammazeta4ever, or some such and place one bid if they haven't already (I don't know who that dmbmonkey character is). An ID like that should give a message for everyone else to let them have it. We shall see.

Also, thanks for the welcome aboard. We're doing what we should, and that's why we're here.

ZAX,
Jono

Corbin Dallas 02-19-2002 01:36 AM

Why would anyone want your badge either though... people will collect anything!

The1calledTKE 02-19-2002 01:39 AM

True but like most normal people if I collect anything it will be my own fraternities stuff. A TKE got back the ritual book that was on ebay, in fact I think the only people that bid on it were TKE's. People can suprize you.

JonoBN41 02-19-2002 02:00 AM

I was dumfounded when I saw that ritual listed and even e-mailed my nephew who's a TKE. The seller got it from a non-TKE and was not a TKE himself, but had the good sense to limit bids to brothers and said he'd verify the winner was and initiated frater before sending it. That was actually the good side of ebay.

Not to toot my own horn, but I found a TKE badge with guard a few weeks ago in a local thrift shop and put it on ebay. A brother from that chapter (GWU) e-mailed me, so I quickly added a 'buy it now' and told him. He snapped it up and will get it back to it's original owner. I didn't make a cent, and don't care that I didn't. The important point is that it's going home.

I collect other pins and badges and will snipe a high bidder unless his id indicates he's a brother of that fraternity. Otherwise, I'll snag it. I'm making a collection to give to my chapter.

Just one other thing --- people can get ebay-stupid. I watched a 1929 Paedagogus (pledge manual) go for $152.50 last week. I found a 1931 edition at an online used bookshop last night for $25.00. Yes. I bought it. The point being, there's more out there than just ebay.

Brothers all.

Jono

The1calledTKE 02-19-2002 02:15 AM

When it goes to most fraternity stuff I could care less if a no TKE gets it because just because they have it doesn't make them a TKE. They are just a perso that has a TKE item. Only things that bother me when a fraternity has pieces of their history being sold which is just not right. I augh about the pins because I see people buying pins for way much money than they are worth. If I wasn't such a dedicated TKE I could buy TKE pins from our vendor and make a big profit.lol

wptw 02-19-2002 10:33 AM

Good morning all.

Does anyone know the answer to "lenoxxx's" question? How did all the Lambda Chi documents from Cole's estate end up with a private dealer? Wouldn't they have been willed back to the General Fraternity? Or wouldn't the fraternity have approached the family after his death for these items? At the very least, why wouldn't they send a representative to his estate sale? This seems like a tremendous oversight.

Just curious. I have been asking myself this question since I saw the first Cole correspondence on ebay several weeks ago.

Interfraternally,
wptw

Corbin Dallas 02-19-2002 01:28 PM

I talked to Tom Helmbock a few weeks back. I think what happened is that IHQ got everything they wanted from his estate. They let everything else go. When I talked to Tom, it was about another item listed on eBay. I was notifying him of it in case they wanted to buy it, but he said they have everything they wanted from Cole's estate. I don't get it personally.

lifesaver 02-19-2002 03:04 PM

I do.

Its all about the bad blood between Cole and LXA. For those not in the know, either read the History book, or PM me. Its very funny that 40 years after his death, peeps still be trippin on it. Did you know according to OFFICIAL LXA records, Cole is still not recognized as Alpha Zeta #1. Was a condition of them restoring his membership. Its been 80 years since the split between cole and LXA. Message to Indy : GET OVER IT FOLKS...

Tom Earp 02-19-2002 04:56 PM

Jono, about time you got your Butt on teh Board!!!!!

Zntke thanks for the coments! I think that it was on the LXA thread that said LXA and TKE almost merged until the TKN merger!

Sent E-m to UMass, and Rob Griffith at Hdqs, he was going to turn it over to chpter services!

I cannot imagine them not wanting the Charter! I would do as suggested, contact that seller and put it BLUNTLY that it is the Property of The Fraternity! It may have been stolen and holding stolen propery is a crime!

Jono, It is great to see you on deck I am sure we will be yacking at each other!

Have talked also with several others including znteke!

Life, one of these days you and I need to via the Phone system! Hell ask Jono, Lenoxxx, Corbin D, and znteke, Hell I love to talk!:D

The1calledTKE 02-19-2002 05:02 PM

Life you should talk to Tom on the phone. Tom is pretty damn cool and even makes more sence on the phone.lol
Isn't that right Tom?

Tom Earp 02-19-2002 05:30 PM

Damn Skippy zntke:D

Talk a lot of good sh&% but dont type it!

JonoBN41 02-19-2002 08:36 PM

This might be a little too off-topic but I can't resist. There's a Sigma Chi badge (the cross) on ebay and the bidding is getting astronomical. Up to $2,500+!

I bought one this weekend for $46.26

Neither have any markings. This is the height of ebay-stoopid. Check it out http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI...tem=1072741738

Jono (shaking his head)

chopper816 02-19-2002 10:18 PM

that cant be worth the 4+ grand that thing went for

Gamma Zeta Continues

Glad to see at least this sparked up a hell of a conversation!

Lenoxxx

JonoBN41 02-19-2002 11:25 PM

Maybe it was a case of sibling rivalry. After all, 4 guys bid $1,500 or more. Final price was $4,272.22. And it didn't even have any pearls.

Jono

Gamma Charter

Finally got E-M from U Mass!

Charter is not on ebay any longer , dont know what happened to it!

Jono, I checked that SX Badge and these people insane!!!!!!! Hell could get one from their National a heck of a lot cheaper!

But of Course, I paid $436.00 for TKN badge! It ids nicer than the one I dropped out on at $200.00 with one Diamond! The one I have if I did not tell you when we talked, has 7 Diamonds and the AA pearl guard. Al. Alpha Samford! If and when we get a new house build it will be there with my BX ,LXA, and TKN Badges for all to Know something about our history!

lenoxxx 02-20-2002 05:36 PM

Alpha Alpha is the chapter at Butler college

Theta Alpha is Samford College.

Please make a note of it!

wptw 02-20-2002 05:36 PM

Hi again folks,

As a badge collector, I can tell you that the Sigma Chi badge you're talking about is INDEED worth the money it went for.

The "rope" style chains (as opposed to the "links" style) indicate it is from the 1870s or 1880s. True, it is not engraved, and the clasp does not appear to be original. But still, a badge from the first quarter century of that group is an exceptionally rare find.

Trying to compare it to a plain badge or even a pearled badge is comparing apples and oranges. There were tens of thousands of those types produced, but probably less than a hundred like this one (and 95 of those 100 were likely melted down ages ago).

Just thought you'd like to know. The bidders are not crazy.

wptw

TKN didn't use full greek letter chapter designations, so it would be Alabama Alpha. We were Indiana Gamma. Depauw, i think was Indiana Alpha. Butler, as you can tell from their Zeta designation wasn't a TKN chapter. Remember TKN chapters have T K or N in their Zeta designation. We got lucky and got TKZ, well I think it had something to do with one of our chapter bros being a fairly big part in the merger.

re: TKN badge

About the TKN badge with AA mentioned above.....

Always keep a note with it that the TKN ring and coat-of-arms
charm that were with that badge (owned by the same person)
are a Georgetown College (Kappa-Omega Zeta)! Would be
great to keep these as a "set", even if physically at 2 zetas!
