What are you reading? Part 2

Just got through with "Soul Mates Dissipate" by Mary B. Morrison. VERY GOOD!!!
I'm now reading "It's a Thin Line" by Kimberla Lawson Roby, she's good as well.
Anyone belong to Black Expressions?

aprilzeta 02-16-2002 06:21 PM

Hi Soror!

I'm a member of black expressions. I just recently purchased It's A Thin Line and another of Mrs. Roby's book(The name escapes me now) through Black Expressions. How do you like the BE club? My only complaint is that they do not always carry the older books of some authors. I'm currently reading two books, Joy by Victoria Christopher Murray and Redemption Song by Bertice Berry.

Special1920 02-16-2002 07:56 PM

Finished Sisters of Kappa Theta Phi(SP). It was better then I thought. Also just read Patti's Pearl's by Patti Labelle, not very good. Now I'm reading Where The Heart Is.

I didn't like Sisters of Theta Phi Kappa. I thought it would have something to do with the sorority but that seemed to be way in the background. I kinda feel like she used the sorority part to get us to buy it.

I felt the exact same way when I read it. It could have been called 1001 other things because it had more to do with women than with the sorority. Plus some of her terminology was off and that "call" was so    -- glad to see I was not the only one.

Tru Blue Lady 02-26-2002 02:20 AM

I am just started reading the sisters of Theta Phi Kappa by Kayla Perrin, and when I'm finished, I'm going to read Hot Johnny :D :D

DOVE1920 03-04-2002 08:23 PM

This summer I've also read:
 • Drop by Mat Johnson
 • What You Owe Me by BeBe Moore Campbell

Drop was/is kinda hard to get into...What you Owe Me is fairly good and Rhythms was good, but the ending could have been better...;)

Soror Zora

I am currently reading Zora Neale Hurston's book "Seraph on the Suwanee".

It is REALLY good, I can hardly put it down to start work!

Kisha 07-31-2002 12:23 PM

Married Men

While vacationing in Jamaica, I read Married Men by Carl Weber. I thought it was predictable, but good. Especially, since I could relate to the sistas in the book. If anyone else has read it. Let me know your thoughts. It was definitely an easy read.

My girlfriend and I got into a debate on a couple issues brought out by the book.

Another good read was Near Perfect. I can't recall the author, but I thought it was excellent.

cateyeZ23 07-31-2002 02:13 PM

I finished reading "Growing Up X" by Ilyassah Shabazz which was very good and now I'm reading "Stolen LegacY" by George James.

Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mai

I'm currently reading books for class! Boo hiss Boo!

For leisure, I just finished reading a book called: Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mai. It is the memoirs of an unwated chinese daughter.

It was a true story and an amazing read. You should try to have compassion and be kind to others, cause you simply have NO IDEA what they go through in life.

Sisterly,

Aurora6

I read it. I think that the author (McWhorter) had good points. However, There really was no basis to it beside his observations. I did want to read Authentically Black because it is a group of essays instead of a book regarding academics.

DeeZetaLady 09-17-2004 07:00 AM

Does anyone know of any good Christian Fiction? I've ordered a few books from Black Expressions.

Be blessed.

LovetoTravel 09-17-2004 03:01 PM

I'm finally reading "Shifting: The Double Lives of Black Women in America". It's a great read.

jojapeach 09-19-2004 10:19 PM

I plan to write down some of the stories in my head, so I wanted to expand my horizons a bit and look into a different area with different POVs. I'm reading "4 Blondes" by Candace Bushnell, author of "Sex and the City". I couldn't find the latter, but "4B" is interesting, especially with four short stories involving women caught up in NYC society, materialism, etc. It taught me that I don't want my works to involve all of that.

Finer Woman10-A-91 09-20-2004 12:58 AM

I am actually reading a few books right now...

Love- by Toni Morrison
Black Titan- by Carol Jenkins & Elizabeth Gardner Hines
and very leisurely- "101 Remarkable Black Women from Queen of Sheba to Queen Latifah" by Annette Madden---good book for highschool teachers to share with their students.

Intense1920 09-20-2004 09:06 AM

I just picked up The Other Woman by Eric Jerome Dickey and Finding Fish Antwone Fisher's memoirs.

'Joy' and 'Temptation' are really good by Victoria Christopher Murray. I know she has a new one out.

I MET HER!! she's a soror and was on the Delta Authors on Tour. i bought and she signed a copy of "joy."

i just finished "bling" by erica kennedy. it was interesting. it's kind of a fictional "behind-the-scenes" book about the music industry. not very complex or mentally stimulating but it's okay.

before that, i read Soror Kamika Spencer's book, "cubicles." it was cool. my spec is her cousin. i liked her other book, "when all hell breaks loose," better than this one.

i'm now reading "drive me crazy" by eric jerome dickey. so far, it's a little slow. it seems to be along the same vein as "thieves paradise" instead of the ones he's really known for like "cheaters" and "friends and lovers."

It is very slow....but it was ok. Let me know when you finish, so we can discuss the ending.
